Lester Pimentel Ong: The ‘Iron Heart’ director is also a restaurateur
When action films came to a screeching halt around year 2000 because of piracy, then stuntman Lester Pimentel Ong bravely ventured into the food business. For him, it was like wading into untested waters. “Nagsimula ako sa (I started in) Rice-In-A box 23 years ago. I started in the film industry as a stuntman. Nakatrabaho ko si Victor Neri, sa mga films ni direk Toto Natividad. Nawala ‘yung raket namin sa stunts kasi nauso ‘yung piracy sa film. Humina ‘yung action film so wala kaming raket. (I worked with Victor Neri, in the films of director Toto Natividad. We lost our stunt jobs because film piracy became prevalent. Action films slowed down, so we didn’t have a job). With his P80,000 savings, he started his rice-in-a-box business at Masagana City Mall, in Pasay, recalled Ong during the opening of the ninth branch of Wangfu, his Chinese-Singaporean restaurant that’s been up for 11 years now. That small rice-in-a-box business now has more than 100 stores consisting of food carts and food stalls. “That business financed all of our other businesses, all our other restaurants,” said Ong proudly. A foodie, Ong was exposed to street food when he was a wushu athlete who represented the country in many competitions abroad. He reveled in the street foods of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Thailand. “I would go around to different places and tuwing may break kami, we would explore the street food market ng different countries. I fell in love with different kind of food, Asian food,” he said. Wangfu came about because, after shoots, “kapag late night, wala kaming makakainan. Nasa food business naman ako, so nagtayo kami ng restaurant sa Tomas Morato. Iyon ang first branch (of Wangfu),” he said. He was joined in the venture by business partner Ace Wang. Wangfu serves Singaporean cuisine like laksa, Hainanese chicken and salted egg fried chicken. From Sir Chief to Sir Chef Actor Richard Yap is also one of Ong’s partners in Wangfu. Yap disclosed that when he was young, he “used to cook at home because my mom cooks very well.” It was his love for food that drove him to study culinary arts. But he discovered along the way that cooking was not for him. “When I took up a culinary course, I found out na hindi pala para sa akin ang pagluluto (that cooking is not for me). Ang hirap ng preparations. It takes a long time. Kung ako ang magluluto (If I will do the cooking), it will take three to four hours if you do it by yourself,” he said. In college, Yap took up a pre-Med course, Medical Technology, for two years, and then stopped because his father asked him to take up Business Management instead. When he applied for Med studies at UST, he was told that he had to go back to first year again. “I said never mind. I’ll just finish my Business Management course at La Salle,” he recalled. Getting into showbiz 12 years ago was something that Yap didn’t see coming. “When I started out with “My Binondo Girl”, after that nagdadalawang isip ako (I had second thoughts). So, I had to ask around. One of my directors, direk Jeffrey Jeturian, said, ‘You know, you have to make a choice kasi it’s either you go full-time sa showbiz or not.’” Yap’s apprehensions were not without basis, since not a lot of people would make it at his age then, around 40. “Ako, sabi ko, late na ako (I’m late), wala pa akong experience. It would take me a lot of time to catch up with veteran actors and actresses,” he said. Fortunately, those around him told him he had a future in showbiz for as long as he persevered. And that he did — and now he’s Richard Yap, a popular actor and household name, forever remembered by many as Sir Chief of the blockbuster TV series Be Careful With My Heart. SBMA takes over 3 Freeport properties
Subic Bay Freeport — The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority revealed on Tuesday that it has seized three more properties in line with the agency’s thrust to reclaim lost assets. SBMA chairman and administrator Jonathan Tan said that the agency took over two buildings from Parabion Inc. at the Cubi Triboa District of the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, adding that the area has a size of 1,176 square meters. “The company has made contractual defaults that prompted the SBMA to take over their properties. Raps filed vs PBBM effigy burners
The Quezon City Police District over the weekend filed charges of violations of The Clean Air Act against those who burned an effigy of Pres. Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. along Commonwealth Avenue, Brgy. UP Campus on his 2nd SoNA last 24 June 2023. QCPD Director P/Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III said the District Anti-Cybercrime Team found that Max Santiago, a member of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan and three cohorts who are still to be identified, burned the said effigy. Torre said a case had been filed for violation of Section 48, paragraph 3 of RA 9003 or the Ecological Waste Management Act of 2000 and RA 8749 or The Clean Air Act before the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office on 7 August 2023 against Santiago (still at large) and his three cohorts. The case was an offshoot of charges of violations of Public Assembly Act of 1985 which the QCPD filed against over a dozen militant rallyists during the 2nd SoNA for holding a protest rally without the necessary permits from the Quezon City local government. Torre said 14 militants were slapped with violation of Section 13 (a) under Batas Pambansa Bldg. 880 or The Public Assembly Act of 1985 last week. Torre III commended his officers and men who worked together in maintaining peace and order during the SoNA 2023. Meanwhile, Atty. Terry Ridon, InfraWatch convenor, said there is nothing in the Clean Air Act which prohibits the burning of effigies, “most particularly when the act is in pursuit of the right to free expression.” “What is expressly prohibited by the CAA is the burning of waste through incinerators, and not this type of burning which is well within the right to free speech and expression,” he said. RA 9003, ridon pointed out, prohibits the open burning of solid waste. “Under any circumstance, works of art such as effigies cannot be considered solid waste as the latter refers to all discarded household, commercial waste, non-hazardous institutional and industrial waste, street sweepings, construction debris, agricultural waste, and other non-hazardous/non-toxic solid waste,” he said. Lacuna wants inquiry on ‘overcharging’ CRs
Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna has ordered an investigation into shopping malls that charge for the use of their public toilets. Lacuna said that the practice of charging for the use of toilets is anti-poor and runs counter to regulations set by the local government. She also urged mall owners to ensure that the practice is stopped. Lacuna directed City Administrator Bernie Ang to write to mall owners in Manila and ensure that the practice of charging fees in exchange for the use of their comfort rooms will not be tolerated. The mayor’s order came after a Juliet de Loza, a staff of tabloid Abante and Abante Tonite, was charged P20 for the use of a comfort room at the Lucky Chinatown Mall in Binondo. De Loza was issued a receipt for only P10, which Ang said is a violation of the conditions under which permits are granted to shopping malls. Ang added that shopping malls are given permits to operate by the city government under the condition that they provide the facilities that are needed by their guests, or the mall-going public. This primarily includes public comfort rooms which the customers may use free of charge. The city administrator warned that violations of the conditions under which permits are granted may be grounds for penalties and even closure. Manila backs ‘love’ tourism drive
Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna has expressed support for the new Department of Tourism campaign slogan, “Love the Philippines.” Speaking at the Balitaan forum organized by the Manila City Hall Reporters’ Association, Lacuna said that the city government of Manila is already working to boost tourism in the city. One of these efforts is the “hop on, hop off heritage tour” that will be launched jointly by the city government and the DoT on 6 July 2023. The tour will highlight the main tourist attractions in Manila, beginning with District 5 and starting at Rizal Park. Lacuna said that there are many tourist attractions in Manila that do not get as much attention as Rizal Park, Intramuros and Binondo. She added that the city government has identified eight tourism hubs covering the six districts in the city, and that they are planning to come up with one product that will be identified with Manila as its very own. The mayor stressed the search for that one product is not easy as the city is a melting pot and a hub for numerous products from all over the country. “There are many places in Manila that could be highlighted for every district. We can identify the places that could be developed as attractions both for local and foreign tourists,” she told reporters. Rizal Park is the most popular tourist destination in Manila where its national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was executed via firing squad on 30 December 1896. It host the historic Rizal Monument and the country’s biggest flag. Called the Walled City of Manila, Intramuros, on the other hand, was built by the Spaniards in the 16th century. It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to many historical landmarks, such as the Manila Cathedral and the San Agustin Church. Binondo prides itself as the oldest Chinatown in the world and is a great place to experience Chinese culture in Manila. It is home to many Chinese restaurants, shops, and temples. Meanwhile, Fort Santiago was also built by the Spanish colonizers in the 16th century to protect the city from invaders. It is located within Intramuros.
