PBA: MVP winner will deserve it says June Mar
In a surprise twist, June Mar Fajardo is actually losing in the Most Valuable Player race for the 2017-2018 PBA season. In a year-end release by the league, Stanley Pringle maintains a statistical lead over Fajardo, getting an average of 35.5 points to June Mar’s 33.1 points. While statistical points are only part of the criteria and Fajardo is expected to make up in other categories, it’s still quite amazing that June Mar is actually trailing. In the four straight seasons that the San Miguel star has won the MVP award, Fajardo was barely challenged and his dominance has been undeniable. For Fajardo, whoever wins this season’s MVP award is truly the PBA’s top dog no question. “Kung sino manalo dun [MVP], deserve niya,” Fajardo told ABS-CBN Sports after a San Miguel practice Wednesday. Even before he won four straight MVPs, he never truly bothered about it, his concern is to improve himself as a player and the awards just came along with it. “Syempre kung makukuha ko yun, blessing,” he said. “Pinaghirapan ko naman eh. Gusto ko mag-improve every game, every conference. Hindi ako magiging stagnant. Gusto ko mag-improve lagi, yun ang goal ko. Hindi ko masyado iniisip yung mga individual awards,” Fajardo added. The 2017-2018 PBA MVP winner will be announced on January 13 before the league opens for a new season. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

BATANGAS CITY -- Aside from winning the championship in his farewell coaching stint in the Philippines, Creamline head coach Tai Bundit was doubly proud of the individual awards received by his players at the close of the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference. Five volleybelles who played under the tutelage of the Thai mentor with the Cool Smashers and those playing on the Ateneo-Motolite side, had their names called for seven categories including the conference and Finals Most Valuable Player awards. “Today, I’m super happy because five of my players became best players (individual awards winners) in the PVL,” said Bundit after the Cool Smashers completed a best-of-three Finals sweep of the Lady Eagles, 25-20, 25-20, 25-15, Saturday at the Batangas City Coliseum here. Creamline star Alyssa Valdez won the tournament MVP and 1st Best Outside Spiker honors while teammate Jia Morado collected her third straight Best Setter award and was named Finals MVP. Valdez and Morado were also the key players of Bundit during their stint with Ateneo in the UAAP where the three delivered the Katipunan-based squad’s breakthrough crown in Season 76 before following it up with a rare tournament sweep in Season 77. Jema Galanza of Creamline bagged the 2nd Best Outside Hitter award while Ateneo- Motolite’s Kat Tolentino and Maddie Madayag received the Best Opposite Hitter and 1st Best Middle Blocker awards, respectively. Madayag was part of the Lady Eagles squad that won the UAAP Season 77 crown while Tolentino played in Bundit’s last two years with Ateneo in Seasons 79 and 80.
