Motiejunas' new mission with the Pelicans: Get Davis open

em>By Brett Martel, Associated Press /em> METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Donatas Motiejunas, the Pelicans' new seven-footer, might sound delusional to more cynical NBA observers. Two of the first topics Motiejunas discussed after his first practice with the Pelicans on Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time) were the health of his back and the Pelicans' playoff prospects, offering rosy outlooks on both fronts. 'I'm going to prove it when I get on the floor,' Motiejunas said when asked about fighting the perception that he's been damaged goods since back surgery near the end of the 2014-15 season. 'I don't see an issue to fighting through this.' The versatile Lithuanian, who has left and right post-up moves, hits about 31 percent of his three-point attempts and draws praise for his passing ability, also sees himself as a boost to the Pelicans' playoff chances. New Orleans is eight games below .500 (14-22), but sat just two games out of the final Western Conference playoff spot heading into Wednesday night's (Thursday, PHL time) NBA slate. When Motiejunas was asked whether he saw his stint with the Pelicans, which will pay him a pro-rated veteran minimum of about $600,000, as an audition for when he becomes a free agent again next summer, he answered by talking about team goals. 'I'm here to help the team win. I'm not here to look at my personal stats,' Motiejunas said. 'If this team is going to make the playoffs and I'm going to help them, it's going to put my value up regardless.' Motiejunas later added, 'As long as we're going to stay healthy, this team right now can make a big push.' A handful of teams expressed interest in signing Motiejunas, who has played four seasons in the NBA with Houston, averaging 7.8 points and four rebounds. They were all offering about the same pay because most teams at this point in the season are restricted to paying the NBA minimum for new free-agent acquisitions. Gentry said the Pelicans had internal discussions about trading for Motiejunas last year and were pleased to be able to get him now in a low-risk, free-agent deal. Gentry said the presence of Anthony Davis and up-tempo, evenly spaced offense the Pelicans run appealed to Motiejunas. 'The opportunity to play alongside a great player — obviously it makes the game easier,' Gentry said. 'The system that we run is something that was appealing to him.' And for New Orleans, having a big-man with passing skills and shooting range helps Davis because he 'can take away some of the potential double-teams' that Davis might otherwise see. Indeed, Motiejunas said his mission is to help Davis 'get wide open shots.' 'I'm a creator,' Motiejunas said. 'I can take the ball to the paint, force the defense to collapse on me and dish the ball to [Davis], and without a lot of energy waste he can get an easy bucket.' The Pelicans have used a smaller, quicker lineup recently with the 6’11” Davis at center. It has paid off in the form of five victories in seven games. Gentry said Motiejunas will likely play center, but his ability to run and pass means a lineup shift, with Davis moving back to power forward, should not disrupt the rhythm with which New Orleans has played lately. Davis agreed, saying Motiejunas has 'a high basketball IQ, but the thing that stands out to me the most is his ability to pass. ... It gives me another opportunity to get out on the floor and roam, step out and shoot the ball, or be able to attack more.' As a restricted free agent last offseason, Motiejunas signed an offer sheet from Brooklyn worth about $36 million over four years. Houston initially sought to match it, but ultimately allowed the 26-year-old to become an unrestricted free agent after negotiations broke down, in part because of the player's history with back injuries. He played in only 37 games last season, but also only missed one regular season game after Feb. 27 and played in five playoff games. Motiejunas said he's been working out on his own in Vancouver the past five months and is in 'really good shape.' .....»»

Beermen clinch no. 1 behind Arwind's MVP outing

Looks like Arwind Santos is truly serious about challenging teammate June Mar Fajardo for this season's PBA Most Valuable Player award. The 2013 PBA MVP came away with his biggest performance of the 2017 Philippine Cup so far and led two-time defending champion San Miguel Beer past Globalport, 106-100, Saturday at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. Santos finished with a season-high 31 points on an efficient 58 percent shooting from the field. The Spider-Man also added 10 rebounds and two dimes as the Beermen won an eight straight game to officially clinch no. 1 with a near-perfect 9-1 record. With the Batang Pier keeping things close, Arwind scored seven points in the last three minutes that helped turn a 95-93 San Miguel lead into a 105-100 advantage with eight seconds left. Aside from Santos, Marcio Lassiter came through for the champs, finishing with 22 points, while Fajardo dropped a 19-point, 15-rebound double-double in front of his hometown crowd. Stanley Pringle led Globalport with 21 points but running mate Terrence Romeo, who came into the game averaging a league-best 27.6 points per game, struggled for only 16 on 4-of-14 shooting. The loss also put a damper in the Batang Pier's quest for a top-2 spot as they are now stuck in a five-way tie behind the Beermen with a 5-4 mark.   br /> The scores: SAN MIGUEL 106 - Santos 31, Lassiter 22, Fajardo 19, Heruela 10, Garcia 8, Tubid 8, Espinas 5, Ross 2, De Ocampo 1, McCarthy 0. Local Westbrook?

Scottie Thompson never ceases to amaze even the great Tim Cone. On Friday, the sophomore guard was at it again for Ginebra, flashing his usual brilliance that made the greatest PBA coach of all time once again mention him like he's already one of the greats. 'He's a few runs below Sonny Jaworski but I think rebounding they're at par,' Cone said, putting the great Scottie in the same sentence with the Living Legend himself. Cone already once mentioned Thompson in the same sentence as Johnny Abbarientos, another all-time PBA great he had the chance to coach back when he was winning a Grand Slam with the Alaska Aces. With Thompson finishing the Ginebra victory over Blackwater with what has been a usual 13 points, 15 rebounds, and seven assists, Cone took his praise to the next level, implying that his prized catch from the 2015 Draft might be the local counterpart of a certain triple-double machine from Oklahoma City. 'I haven't seen a rebounding guard like hime even in the NBA [except maybe] the kid from Oklahoma City, [Russell] Westbrook,' Cone said. While averaging a triple-double at this stage of his career and with a loaded Ginebra lineup might be a stretch for now even for Scottie, Cone believes his young guard might be on the way. It's just a matter of him finding his inner aggressive self to take over the floor more on the offensive side of the ball. 'I don't want to put pressure on Scottie but I think eventually he could end up putting up Westbrook numbers once he learns how to score and he can score,' the 19-time PBA champion mentor said. 'I think that will open up the gate for him [being aggressive],' he added.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8 .....»»

Baby Tamaraws send out statement, stomp on Bullpups

A week after dealing the first defeat of erstwhile Adamson High School, the Baby Tamaraws downed defending champion Nazareth School of National University. Xyrus Torres scored 20 points and the FEU-Diliman defense suffocated the Bullpups to ghastly 27 percent shooting from the field for a 61-46 decision on Saturday at the San Juan Arena. Torres caught fire from the get-go and had eight points to match NU’s entire first quarter output. In all, the Baby Tams dug a 25-8 hole for their opponents after only the opening salvo. The defending champions would be unable to recover as FEU-Diliman dared John Lloyd Clemente to beat them by his lonesome and the versatile forward fell way short in doing so. The wire-to-wire win is the Baby Tamaraws’ fourth in a row and eighth overall in 10 games, charging them onto a share of second with their vanquished foes. They may even find themselves with a share of first depending on the Baby Falcons’ result later. The Bullpups slipped out of first-place and onto an 8-2 standing. Clemente was their lone player in double-digits with 14 points. Meanwhile, De La Salle Zobel finally barged back onto the win column after shooting down University of the East, 81-59. Five Junior Archers scored in double-digits as they improved to 3-7. The loss dropped the Junior Warriors to 1-9. Gobert's 27-25 lifts Jazz over Mavs in OT

DALLAS (AP) Rudy Gobert had career highs with 27 points and 25 rebounds, including one on his missed free throw in overtime that led to the tying 3-pointer by Joe Johnson, and the Utah Jazz beat the Dallas Mavericks 112-107 on Friday night. Gobert had just missed both of his free throw attempts with 1:50 left, but the second one ricocheted right back to him. Johnson then hit a 3 to make it 107-all. After a Dallas miss by Deron Williams and a foul in the aftermath, Joe Ingles put the Jazz ahead to stay with two free throws with 1:35 remaining. Gobert finished with his 29th consecutive 10-rebound game. Gordon Hayward had 26 points, including a big 3-pointer late in regulation. Johnson finished with 15 points. Harrison Barnes had 19 points for Dallas, which had seven players score in double figures. Williams had 16 points and Seth Curry 15. Williams had consecutive layups high off the glass in overtime, the last with 1:36 putting the Mavericks up 107-104. Hayward's 3-pointer with 1:06 left in regulation had put the Jazz up 96-95, then Gobert had a rebound that led to his layup at the other end for a 98-95 lead with 36 seconds left. That rebound by Gobert came after a missed 3-pointer by J.J. Barea, who aggravated a calf issue on the shot. Curry, who had been on the bench for a long stretch, re-entered the game for Barea and made a wide-open tying 3-pointer from the left corner with 25 seconds left that tied it. Dirk Nowitzki had a season-high 10 rebounds for Dallas, but was just 1-of-13 shooting for three points. A minute into the fourth quarter, the 13-time All-Star and MVP from 10 years ago twice grabbed his own misses before being blocked on a third try. .....»»

Ginebra posts first winning streak after stopping Elite

It took nine games but it happened, Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel finally took its first winning streak of the new PBA season. The Gin Kings won back-to-back games for the first time in the 2017 Philippine Cup after stopping Blackwater Friday, 99-90, at the Cuneta Astrodome. With the Elite erasing a 15-point lead to tie things upo at 82-all early in the fourth quarter, Ginebra displayed some championship composure and responded with an 11-2 run to re-establish control, 93-84, with less than five minutes to go. It was then cruise control for the Gin Kings to wrap up their fifth win against four defeats, forcing a four-team tie for the 3rd-6th spots in the standings. Blackwater dropped to solo seventh with an even 5-5 card. 'They [Blackwater] just kept hanging in there, they even came back and tied it up,' head coach Tim Cone said. 'I just felt tonight we had more depth than them, especialy after Japeth went out. Dave stepped in, played well, Jervy stepped in and played well. We just had more depth than them and I think that's the difference,' he added. With Japeth Aguilar going down in the first half following a bad fall off a dunk, it took a collective team effort from the Ginebra frontline to make up for his absence. Bolts zap Rain or Shine to keep fading playoff hopes alive

Meralco hit two birds with one stone Friday at the Cuneta Astrodome. Not only did the Bolts kept their flickering playoff hopes alive, Meralco put a dent in Rain or Shine's own race after scoring a convincing 82-72 victory in the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup. Snapping a six-game losing skid, Meralco improved to 3-7 for the season, still mathematically alive for the quarterfinals although the Bolts' destiny is not exactly in their hands. Meralco needs to win its last game and hope other teams already at four wins lose out in order to sneak into the playoffs of the season-opening tournament. With Cliff Hodge and Jonathan Uyloan at the helm, Meralco got to a fast start and unloaded a 35-20 lead on the Elasto Painters in the very first quarter, setting the tone for the rest of the contest. While the Bolts never scored above 20 points in each of the three succeeding quarters, Meralco was able to hold off Rain or Shine effectively with its defense, allowing the Elasto Painters to only shoot 31 percent from the field. Reigning Rookie of the Year Chris Newsome paced Meralco with 19 points and six rebounds while Hodge added a 17-point, 16-rebound double-double. Uyloan ended up with 14 for the Bolts. Rain or Shine, who was tied for second place coming in but now fell to 5-4 for the conference, got 17 from James Yap. .....»»
