Jokic’s triple-double helps Nuggets beat Knicks 115-108

By Pat Graham, Associated Press DENVER (AP) — Nikola Jokic had 19 points, 14 rebounds and 15 assists, including a late no-look pass to wrap things up, as the Denver Nuggets kept right on rolling by beating the New York Knicks 115-108 on Tuesday night (Wednesday, PHL time) for their ninth straight home victory. Reserve Malik Beasley added a career-high 23 points for the Western Conference-leading Nuggets, who have now knocked off the Knicks 11 straight times at the Pepsi Center. It was far from easy, though, with the Nuggets needing a big three-pointer from Jokic with 2:55 remaining to finally gain some separation. The struggling Knicks have lost eight in a row. Luke Kornet led the Knicks with 19 points, while reserve Enes Kanter scored 17 points and grabbed 12 points. Kanter recently voiced his displeasure about his role with the Knicks. It was the Jokic show with the seven-footer posting his third triple-double of the season. Jokic did a little bit of everything, including a heads-up play with 1:21 left and Denver leading 111-105. He grabbed a rebound and threw it off the back of Tim Hardaway Jr. as he was falling out of bounds. Later, Jokic delivered a no-look pass to Beasley to seal the win. The Nuggets are steadily getting back to health. They had Gary Harris back after he missed 11 games with a hip injury. Over the weekend, Paul Millsap returned to the court from a broken toe. Millsap had 16 points against the Knicks. Before the game, Nuggets coach Michael Malone voiced his concern over Denver’s defensive intensity of late. The Nuggets tightened things up in the second half after falling behind by as many as 10 points in the second quarter. Knicks guard Emmanuel Mudiay scored 15 points against the team that selected him seventh overall in the 2015 draft. The Nuggets dealt him to the Knicks last February. TIP-INS Knicks: New York’s last win in Denver was Nov. 8, 2006, when Carmelo Anthony suited up for the Nuggets. ... F Noah Vonleh grabbed 14 rebounds. ... F Kevin Knox scored 18. Nuggets: The only starter now missing is Will Barton, who’s getting closer to a return after surgery to repair a hip/core muscle injury. ... G Torrey Craig scored 13. HAPPY BIRTHDAY? Although a popular basketball site lists Malone’s birthday as Jan. 1, 1971, he insisted it was not his birthday. “Somebody else sent me a random text of happy birthday,” Malone said. “It’s a mystery. Don’t believe everything you read.” Asked when his birthday was, Malone joked: “You writing a book?” FIGURING THINGS OUT With several of his starters returning from injuries, Malone is trying to figure out a rotation pattern to keep everyone happy. It’s going to be a work in progress. “None of them need to come back and be Mighty Mouse. We don’t need anyone to save the day,” Malone said. “Come back and do your part.” UP NEXT Knicks: Stop No. 4 on their six-game trip will be Friday (Saturday, PHL time) in Los Angeles against the Lakers. Nuggets: At Sacramento on Thursday (Friday, PHL time)......»»

Lakers rally in 4th quarter, defeat Kings 121-114

By Joe Reedy, Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored a season-high 26 points, Josh Hart added 22 and the Los Angeles Lakers won for the first time since LeBron James was sidelined with a groin injury, beating the Sacramento Kings 121-114 Sunday night (Monday, PHL time). Brandon Ingram added 21 points, including seven during the game-deciding run. The Kings led 110-103 with 4:30 remaining when the Lakers scored 12 straight points over a three minute span. Ingram hit a three-pointer with 2:13 remaining to give Los Angeles a 113-110 lead. A steal and layup by Iman Shumpert brought the Kings within three, but Caldwell-Pope made a driving layup to make it a two-possession game. De'Aaron Fox led Sacramento with 26 points, while Buddy Hield and Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 21 apiece. It was the second time in four nights that the Kings and Lakers played. Sacramento won 117-116 on Dec. 27 on a three-pointer by Bogdanovic at the buzzer. That was the first game James had missed since injuring his groin during the Dec. 25 (Dec. 26, PHL time) game at Golden State. The Lakers were 0-2 in James' absence. James, who was celebrating his 34th birthday on Sunday (Monday, PHL time), arrived just after tipoff. Sacramento led by four at halftime and was up 85-74 with 5:35 remaining in the third quarter before the Lakers scored 12 straight points to take the lead. Caldwell-Pope keyed the run with nine points, including a pair of three-pointers. The Lakers' lead lasted only 15 seconds, however, as Hield hit a three-pointer and the Kings outscored Los Angeles 11-6 over the remainder of the quarter. TIP-INS Kings: Willie Cauley-Stein had 11 points and 12 rebounds. ... Fox also had seven assists, marking the 29th game he has had five or more, which is the fifth-most in the league. Lakers: Kyle Kuzma added 18 points and Lonzo Ball 13. ... JaVale McGee scored eight points in his first game since Dec. 15 (Dec. 16, PHL time). The 11-year center had missed seven games due to a respiratory infection. ... Hart's 17 first-half points is a career-high, surpassing the 16 he had in the first 24 minutes against Memphis on Dec. 8 (Dec. 9, PHL time). UP NEXT Kings: Host Portland on Tuesday (Wednesday, PHL time). Lakers: Host Oklahoma City on Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time)......»»

UAAP Finals: Bo Perasol has a message for his critics from Ateneo

On Saturday, Bo Perasol will be in the position to prove himself further to the University of the Philippines community during the UAAP Season 81 best-of-three Finals series. As a sidelight, he will also have every chance to redeem himself against  Ateneo de Manila University, which happens to be his former employer for three years. Before he became the head tactician of the Finals-bound Maroons, he was the head coach of the Kiefer Ravena-headlined Ateneo from Seasons 76 to 78. But those three years were not as fruitful as every Atenean wanted it to be. Either they completely missed qualifying for the Final Four or fell mercilessly short of a Finals ticket. He inherited an Ateneo team that was fresh from five consecutive championships under Norman Black's tutelage and the great Blue Eagle Ravena was in his prime years. The pressure to deliver was so heavy that when those campaigns failed, Perasol earned a lot of critics who second-guessed his decision-making. Months after leaving Ateneo, he signed up with his alma mater to mentor the Fighting Maroons. It was a gradual build-up starting with a sixth place finish in Season 79, a fifth place finish in Season 80, to this year's Finals berth. His perseverance with the former cellar dwellers is finally coming to fruition. The plot just thickens given the fact that it will be against his former team Ateneo. But Perasol wants to make things clear, this is not personal business. "What I have with Ateneo is just, in fact, gratefulness. I'm very thankful to them for giving me the chance, for believing in me. If they did not believe, I mean the people who managed the team, if they did not believe in me hundred percent, I wouldn't be there for two more years. First year palang natanggal na ako dun," said the current UP mentor. "Naniniwala ako na walang animosity in my heart when I go up against these people," he added. Days leading up to the Battle of Katipunan, there have been a lot of friendly banter on social media regarding the very interesting David and Goliath match-up. One memorable meme that came from the back-and-forth of the fans was a sarcastic one that goes along the lines of "Sa wakas, mabibigyan na ni Bo ang Ateneo ng championship. #OBF" Reporters have mentioned the meme to the amiable UP tactician and said he isn’t affected. "Okay lang yun. Again, we cannot control the minds of other people. If I'm going to entertain those thoughts, I wouldn't be here. I wouldn't have had the patience or the courage to go on kapag ako apektado lagi sa mga ganun," he said. He leaves it up to the equally witty UP community to come up with some other clever reply. "Ang dami ring patawa ng mga taga UP against Ateneo. That should be the case, kaya nga naging entertaining itong basketball na ito and we're just parang nagiging pawns lang tayo dito and at the end of this we are still going to play 40 minutes of basketball, nothing personal about that," Perasol added who is also celebrating his 47th birthday on the eve of Game 1. The Finals series between UP and Ateneo would be the perfect stage for Perasol's redemption but this is not about him. Being the heavy underdogs in this series, Perasol goes back to the rhetoric that this will always be for and about the UP community. "They say that being an underdog will limit the expectations but I don't think the expectations of the UP community are quite limited right now. They would want to go all the way even if they know that we are the overwhelming underdogs," he said. "It also says how hungry we are and it's just a matter of thinking that regardless of the odds, you still have to fight through the game," he added. All UAAP fans will have the best-of-three Battle of Katipunan series to find out whether Perasol's redemption storyline will come full circle by the end of the season or not. The games will start on Saturday, December 1 at the Mall of Asia Arena. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @the9cruz.....»»

Embiid s 30, Simmons triple-double lead 76ers past Bulls 127-108

By Dan Gelston, Associated Press PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Ben Simmons had a triple-double with 13 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists and Joel Embiid had 30 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Philadelphia 76ers past the Chicago Bulls 127-108 on Thursday night (Friday, PHL time). Zach LaVine led the Bulls with 30 points in their season opener. The curious case of Markelle Fultz continued against the Bulls when one of the more scrutinized players in the NBA managed to steal the spotlight from his more accomplished teammate with simple jumpers. Fultz had open looks early and 76ers fans exhorted him to "Shoot! Shoot!" each time he touched the ball as the second-year guard tries to overcome his aversion to jumpers. He found the look he wanted three minutes into the second quarter. Fultz dribbled to the foul line and hit an uncontested pull-up jumper, the ball rattling around the rim four times before it plopped through the net for two points. 76ers fans erupted in cheers as they gave him a standing ovation and chanted "Fultz! Fultz! Fultz!" Yes, a simple jumper from the No. 1 overall pick of the 2017 draft in the second game of the season was enough to get a rise out of the fans — and a sigh of relief from Fultz. Fultz got a similar reaction when he buried a three-pointer in a preseason game, after not attempting one last season. Fultz suffered from a right shoulder injury, a broken shot and busted confidence in his rookie season. Even his personal shooting coach said Fultz suffered from the "yips," which was shot down by his star client. Fultz blamed his lost season on the injury. Sixers coach Brett Brown tried to give Fultz a confidence boost by putting him in the starting lineup — yet benching him for the start of the second half. Fultz was 1-of-6 in 15 minutes in the first half and didn't play again until late in the third and the Sixers leading by 88-68. "The challenge is to grow him and help us win the game," Brown said. "There's no book that tells you how to do that, so you're going to have to figure some stuff out. There will be some pain along the way and some positives." With or without Fultz, the 76ers had plenty of positives after an opening-night disaster in Boston. Simmons hit a triple-double with 2:34 left in the third, the 13th of his career and the first Sixer to ever get one in the home opener. Sixers fans chanted "Trust the Process!" when Embiid ended the third with free throws. Fultz proved a long-range ace again in the fourth — this time with a 3! He drained his first career three-pointer for a 108-88 lead and the Philly fans that are firmly perched in his corner went wild and again chanted his name. The Sixers know that if they want to become legitimate Eastern Conference contenders, Fultz will have to become the star they envisioned when they drafted him. He made five baskets and scored 12 points. TIP-INS Bulls: G Kris Dunn missed the game for the birth of his son. ... Bobby Portis had 20 points and 11 rebounds. 76ers: Rapper Meek Mill sat courtside and rang the ceremonial Liberty Bell to start the game. ... Embiid thanked the fans for coming and told them to "Trust the Process." 1ST Q & NO D Embiid scored 12 points in the first five minutes of the game and neither team missed many looks in the first quarter. The Sixers made 11 of their first 14 shots and the Bulls started 14-of-19. The 76ers shot a whopping 70 percent in the quarter and still trailed the Bulls 41-38. UP NEXT Bulls: Play home opener Saturday (Sunday, PHL time) against Detroit. 76ers: Host Orlando on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time)......»»

Hall of Famer and Olympic gold medalist Anne Donovan dies

By Doug Feinberg, Associated Press Anne Donovan, the Basketball Hall of Famer who won a national championship at Old Dominion, two Olympic gold medals as a player and another as a coach, died Wednesday of heart failure. She was 56. Donovan's family confirmed the death in a statement. "While it is extremely difficult to express how devastating it is to lose Anne, our family remains so very grateful to have been blessed with such a wonderful human being," the statement said. "Anne touched many lives as a daughter, sister, aunt, friend and coach. Anne was a person with strong faith, courageous spirit, a giving heart and love for everyone," her family's statement continued. "We are so proud of her accomplishments as a women's' basketball player and coach, but even more proud of her character, integrity, humility and kindness." Donovan was at the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tennessee, last weekend. She was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995, was part of the inaugural class of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999 and was inducted in the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2015. The 6-foot-8 center coached both in college and the WNBA. She became the first female coach and the youngest person (42) to win a title in the WNBA, guiding the Seattle Storm to a championship in 2004. "Anne Donovan will always be remembered as a championship coach and a championship person," the Storm said in a statement. "Her dedication, passion and winning spirit set the tone for Storm Basketball. We are deeply saddened by her passing and share our heartfelt condolences with her family." Donovan was a member of three Olympics teams as a player. The 1980 team did not go to Russia because of a boycott. The team won the gold in 1984 and '88, and she coached the winning 2008 team. "USA Basketball mourns the passing of Anne Donovan. She played for her first USA Basketball team in 1977 and during her Hall of Fame, 31-year USA career, she was a member of five U.S. Olympic teams and four USA World Championship teams as an athlete and coach, culminating in leading the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team to gold as our head coach in Beijing," USA Basketball said in a statement. "She used to say she bled red, white and blue. As much as we remember her accomplishments in the game, we mourn a great friend who will be greatly missed." Donovan also coached the WNBA's Indiana Fever, the Charlotte Sting, New York Liberty and Connecticut Sun, working there from 2013-15. The New Jersey native also coached at Seton Hall for a few years. After playing at Old Dominion, Donovan played professionally in Japan and Italy. After retiring, she was an assistant at Old Dominion and then coached at East Carolina University from 1995-1998. She coached the Philadelphia Rage in the American Basketball League in 1997-98. ___ AP Sports Writer Tom Canavan contributed to this report......»»
