‘Terrible nightmare’: OFWs recount Hamas attack on Israel
Two Overseas Filipino Workers shared on Monday their traumatizing experience during the attack of Hamas militants on Israel. Teresita Malapo, 35, a resident of Baao, Camarines Sur and a caregiver for eight years, said they were about to go to church in Jerusalem when they heard a siren. “On Saturday morning, we were about to go to church in Jerusalem because most of the time, we go to church every day off. Suddenly, we heard a siren. After a while, there was news that rockets were being launched from Palestine. We were all shocked." She added that a simple bang of the door made her feel nervous because of the bombings. “That feeling that you always hear something, and your feeling of nervousness is increasing. When a door closes, you think something has exploded. In Israel, there is an explosion anytime of the day. It explodes even without a siren. When there’s a bombing, our house or bomb shelters vibrates,” she lamented. Meanwhile, Gerald Caniban, 35, a resident of Iloilo City and a caregiver for five years, said he was asleep when he was awakened by a phone alert and heard a siren. “It was an overwhelming experience because of what happened on 7 October. I was staying in Tel Aviv that morning, I was with my girlfriend when we heard the alert on my phone. It was Saturday, our day off. Then after a few minutes, we heard a siren all over Tel Aviv,” Caniban said. “It was a terrible nightmare. Israel didn’t expect Hamas to attack. In my personal experience, I don’t have peace of mind. Even if you’re asleep, it’s like you’re awake because you might hear a siren anytime. Then I got sick for a week thinking that there was something that would come again. So even when I’m lying down, I still watch the news. That’s what makes me nervous that something worst might be coming,” he said. A total of 25 OFWs, including a four-month-old infant, arrived on Monday afternoon at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3, as the third batch of repatriates via Etihad Airways EY424. The repatriates were received by Department of Migrant Workers Officer-in-Charge Hans Leo Cacdac, DMW Undersecretary Maria Anthonette Velasco-Allones, TESDA Director Cariza Dacuma, Congressman Ron Salo, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Administrator Mary Melanie Quino, Department of Social Welfare and Development Director Mirmamel Laxa and Department of Health Director Bernadette Velasco. According to Allones, two of the repatriates are in need of psychosocial assistance. Cacdac said a total of 16 caregivers and nine hotel workers were in the third batch of repatriated OFWs, which he said were predominantly women. When Ka Noli rained on Arjo and Maine’s wedding
What was he thinking? That's the question in the minds of many netizens angry at the throwaway comment made by veteran broadcast journalist Noli De Castro in the closing minutes of TV Patrol last Friday, after the news that actors Arjo Atayde and Maine Mendoza had wed in Baguio City that day. “Kayo naman habang kinakasal, kawawa naman ang binagyo,” said De Castro, referring to Super Typhoon "Egay" that was then wreaking havoc across many parts of the country. Was De Castro implying that Atayde and Mendoza were insensitive for having pushed through with their star-studded wedding despite the disaster happening in other parts of the country? Many viewers and netizens thought so, and in their comments uniformly slammed De Castro for his seemingly nonsensical remark. The newlyweds' nuptials, after all, had long been scheduled, way before "Egay" appeared on PAGASA's radar. Showbiz scribe and vlogger Ogie Diaz was among those who chimed in to chide De Castro for what he said was the former vice president's thoughtless words. "Baka gusto niya maki-empathize sa mga binabagyo sa pamamagitan ng pang-ookray dun sa isang okasyon na matagal nang naka-schedule. O ayan ngayon, binibembang siya ng mga tao," said Diaz in his YouTube show "Showbiz Update with Ogie Diaz." "Kaya ang next question ko: Ano po ang naitulong ni Ka Noli sa mga binagyo? Ano po ang naitulong ni Ka Noli bukod sa pagbabalita at pagpapaalala sa mga kababayan natin na mag-ingat? Ano po?," dared Diaz. Given his age, experience and stature, De Castro should be more mindful of his words, reminded Diaz. "Ay naku, Ka Noli, mas maganda na mag-iwan tayo ng magagandang legacia habang tayo ay nagkakaedad at darating ang panahon na tayo ay magpapaalam sa trabahong minahal natin — pero nang may dignidad," he said. Would De Castro apologize, as many netizens (including Diaz) have demanded? Not likely, to go by his follow-up words when fellow anchors Karen Davila and Bernadette Sembrano tried to soften his remarks in that Friday broadcast. Doubling down, De Castro insisted: “Hindi, hindi. Si Egay na kalalabas lang ay may papalit naman na si Falcon. At ang possiblity na maaaring ang dinaanan ni Egay ay dadaanan din ni Falcon at mabigat ‘yang pasanin sa ating mga kababayan na hindi pa nakakabangon hanggang ngayon.” Fans of the new Mr. and Mrs. Mendoza will soon not forget how De Castro rained on the couple's happy day by appearing to guilt-trip them in such a public, blatant way about something they had ultimately no control over. BSP target: 70% of adult Filipinos to have bank accounts
The country's central bank may achieve its aim of having 70 percent of adult Filipinos with bank accounts later this year as more Filipinos are now part of the official financial system, the new Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) chief recently said. "In our financial inclusion survey in 2021, 56 percent of [adults] in the country had a bank account, a significant increase from just 23 percent in 2017," he said during the BSP 30th Anniversary Reception for the Banking Community. "We're confident we will reach our target of 70 percent by this year," he added. Remolona attributed digitalization to financial equality in the country, allowing people to save money, invest in their futures, and participate in the digital economy more effectively. He added that more Filipinos made more digital payments and formally opened bank accounts. "We're making some progress. At last count, 42 percent of retail payments were in digital form. This is up from just one percent 10 years ago. That proportion should hit our target of 50 percent this year," Remolona said. So far, 258 digital payment companies have been given licenses by the BSP. Remolona expects competition and network effects to result in a system where the "most innovative, efficient, and responsible providers truly respond to customers' needs." Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the banking event, BSP deputy governor Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said that the central bank's recently deployed coin deposit machines (CODM) in various retail locations across Greater Manila Area have already recorded P12 million worth of deposits within just one month of operation. "It's been only one month since we deployed all the machines, but we started with just ten machines. Yet, we have already received 12 million worth of deposits," Puyat told reporters. The machines located in Robinsons Manila, SM Hypermart, SM, and Filinvest Alabang have been experiencing heavy foot traffic, with the Robinsons Manila machine being the most popular. The influx of people depositing coins has been attributed to the artificial coin shortage in circulation, as people tend to keep their coins at home or find it troublesome to deposit them at the banks. The coin deposit machines accept all coins except unfit ones and reject deposits with scotch tape or other items mixed with the coins. Puyat also shared that the highest deposit received was worth P50,000 in coins, which the depositor immediately converted to e-wallet credits. "In fact, 98 percent of depositors use e-wallets for their transactions," Puyat said. The BSP plans to expand the initiative to more locations in Metro Manila. When asked about future plans, she mentioned, "We're planning to relaunch it with Gov. Eli (Remolona) and maybe in Pasig, as Mayor Vico texted me. He also wants it in Pasig." Is Noli de Castro unhappy over Arjo-Maine wedding?
On the Friday episode of the news program TV Patrol, the show’s anchors were able to talk about the wedding of Arjo Atayde and Maine Mendoza. Whilst Karen Davila and Bernadette Sembrano seemed to be celebrating with the couple’s union, veteran news anchor and journalist Noli de Castro surprised everyone with the comments he aired live on national television. "Katuwa naman. Kasal na sila”, according to Davila and Sembrano De Castro then said, “Kayo habang kinakasal, kawawa naman yung mga binagyo. Si Egay na kalalabas lang ay may papalit na si Falcon at ang possibility na maaring ang dinaanan ni Egay ay daanan din ni Falcon. Mabigat 'yan na pasanin sa hindi pa rin nakakabangon hanggang ngayon.” Maybe to lighten the impact of what Kabayan said, Davila jokingly remarked, “Ito naman”. The newlyweds' supporters were dismayed over what de Castro said and also expressed their opinions in behalf of Mr. and Mrs. Atayde. "Hay kabayan.... for sure matagal ng naka-schedule yung wedding date nila. Is this an indication that Kabayang Noli de Castro is one of those AlDub diehard fans? Regine Velasquez-Alcasid shares her life story on ‘Tao Po’
Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid talked about her life story with Kapamilya reporter Ganiel Krishnan in an engaging episode of Tao Po, hosted by Bernadette Sembrano, and took viewers on a nostalgic journey last Sunday, 2 July. Velasquez-Alcasid started singing at five years old. She fondly recalled her first experience performing on stage, when she felt significant and overwhelmed by the praises that followed. “I wanna do this for the rest of my life,” she said, realizing that singing was her calling. The 53-year-old singer stressed her strong determination to succeed, saying, “You do whatever you can to make your dreams come true.” Velasquez-Alcasid also recalled how she — as an 18-year-old Chona (her real name) — struggled to break into the music industry. She never felt discouraged when people talked about her looks. “Wait till you hear me sing,” she said. [caption id="attachment_152988" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] WITH husband Ogie Alcasid.[/caption] With the help of a new management group and a new screen identity as Regine Velasquez, she was able to start over after being recognized for her singing prowess. But when she met Ogie Alcasid, love blossomed once more. Despite some obstacles, their journey together produced a strong and enduring relationship. Reflecting on their early days, Velasquez-Alcasid revealed: “When we met, we became really, really close. He was already married. We didn’t expect it to happen, but it did. Our beginnings were very difficult.” They overcame struggles and persisted, eventually finding comfort in forgiveness and creating a life together. She also talked openly about her 41-year-old self who embraced motherhood for the first time. She thanked Nathaniel Alcasid for the life-changing experience and said, “He is such a blessing.” Velasquez-Alcasid took on the responsibilities of a full-time wife and mother during the pandemic. However, the limitations imposed by Covid-19 presented their own set of problems. Regine used scrapbooking as a creative outlet to deal with the stress. Medalla: BSP in good hands
Outgoing Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Felipe Medalla recently expressed confidence in the incoming governor, saying he is “very optimistic” about the central bank’s future. In an interview with reporters late last month, Medalla said that the new governor has the “temperament, the skills, the intellect, and the integrity” to do the job. He also said that he expects continuity with the new governor, as they “rarely voted differently” on many issues. Medalla’s term as BSP governor ended on 2 July. He was appointed to the position in June 2022 to serve the unfinished term of then-Governor Benjamin Diokno, who was appointed Finance Secretary. As Medalla departs from BSP, Malacañang said on 23 June that Eli Remolona, a seasoned economist and specialist in monetary policy, will be taking his place in President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s economic team. Capable successor “We’re lucky that the new governor is going to be a very good one, I think,” Medalla said. “The BSP here, being professionals that they are, I’m sure we’ll give him the best support.” Medalla also said that he expects continuity with the new governor. He said they rarely voted differently on many issues, not just monetary policy. “I think we think alike in many ways,” Medalla said. The BSP is the Philippines’ central bank responsible for maintaining price and financial stability. It is also the lender of last resort to the banking system. On Friday, 30 June, Medalla paid a farewell visit to Marcos at the Study Room of Malacañang Palace as his term as BSP governor concluded. BSP Deputy Governor Bernadette Romulo-Puyat joined Medalla during the visit. The official Facebook page of state-run Radio Television Malacañang shared a video of this farewell meeting. During the meeting, Medalla thanked Marcos for allowing him to lead the BSP. “I am grateful to the President for having given me a chance to serve as BSP Governor, which is, by far, the best opportunity that I have received to make an impact and serve the Filipino people truly,” he said. “I am honored to turn over the reins of the institution to my Monetary Board colleague Eli Remolona who is fully capable of leading the central bank in pursuing its mandates of promoting price and financial stability and a safe and efficient payments and settlements system,” he added. Marcos also thanked Medalla for his dedicated government service and strong leadership, which played a crucial role in mitigating the impact of inflation in the country. “We have to thank you. Yes. Thank you very much,” Marcos told Medalla. Medalla, who previously held the position of director-general of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) from 1998 to 2001, has been a member of the policy-making Monetary Board since July 2011. He taught at the School of Economics at the University of the Philippines, where he served as the dean for four years, beginning in 1994. BSP serves Palawan through new branch
PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan — The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas inaugurated a branch in this city on Thursday to provide banking services and drive more economic activities while boosting financial inclusivity. The BSP main building office is in a 5,000-square meter lot at the corner of North National Road and Sampaloc Road in Barangay San Jose. It houses the financial and administrative offices, cash operation units and security management. BSP Governor Felipe Medalla said the branch, designed to reflect the modern architecture of their latest generation buildings, aims to enhance accessibility primarily in obtaining clean banknotes and coins. “It would become easier for banks to deal with the BSP. Those who needed BSP’s service do not need to charter flights to Manila,” he said. Major event Medalla and other BSP officials were joined in the new branch opening by Palawan governor Victorino Dennis Socrates, Puerto Princesa Mayor Lucilo Bayron, and Vice Mayor Maria Nancy Socrates. During his brief address, Socrates expressed the significance of the opening, noting that its occurrence coincides with the month-long celebration of Palawan’s 121st anniversary of its civil government establishment. He highlighted that the province would also be saying “goodbye, dirty money.” Bayron also highlighted that the funds to be distributed from the branch would effectively address the recurring cash shortage experienced every December. This is of great importance to the city, which serves as a pivotal hub for trade and financial services. “December is withdrawal time, a charter plane of the Bangko Sentral has to fly here to send money. This time, that will not happen anymore because of this branch,” Bayron said. 33 banks get quick service He said the branch will cater to the requirements of approximately 33 banks within the city and an additional 25 banks located in various towns throughout the province. With the establishment of BSP Puerto Princesa, the central bank’s presence now extends to a total of five regional offices covering the Greater Manila Area, North Luzon, South Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao regions. Additionally, it encompasses 21 branches situated in various provinces and cities including La Union, Batac, Cabanatuan, Dagupan, San Fernando Pampanga, Tuguegarao, Legazpi, Lucena, Naga, Puerto Princesa, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Iloilo, Roxas, Tacloban, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cotabato, General Santos, Ozamiz and Zamboanga. This expansion further solidifies the comprehensive reach of the central bank across the country. BSP regional offices are responsible for overseeing the operations of branches within their respective jurisdictions. They also conduct regional economic surveillance, facilitate financial literacy programs, and advocate for financial education. Additionally, these offices are involved in the administration of cash and gold-buying operations. On the other hand, BSP branches primarily handle cash operations, which include services such as withdrawals, deposits, currency exchanges, and retirements within their designated regions or provinces. In select areas, they also engage in gold-buying operations. During the inauguration ceremony, those present included Monetary Board members Peter Favila, Antonio Abacan Jr., V. Bruce Tolentino, and Anita Linda Aquino. In addition, BSP Deputy Governors Mamerto Tangonan, Eduardo Bobier, and Bernadette Romulo-Puyat were present, along with BSP Senior Assistant Governor and General Counsel Elmore Capule, SAG Edna Villa, and Sector-in-Charge Thomas Benjamin Marcelo. Furthermore, Puerto Princesa City Vice Mayor Maria Nancy M. Socrates graced the occasion. The event also saw the participation of BSP officers from the Manila Head Office and South Luzon branches, as well as representatives from the Palawan Bankers Association, and local bank managers. Google announces new cybersecurity career certificate
Google announced a new Google Career Certificate in cybersecurity. Built by experts at Google and vetted by employers, the certificate will help organizations upskill their employees and enable people to qualify for entry-level jobs, including cybersecurity analyst and information security analyst. This new course — and the recently announced new advanced data analytics and business intelligence certificates — are part of the existing Google Career Certificate program in the Philippines. With this, Google is working closely with the Department of Information and Communications Technology and is providing Cybersecurity Career Certificate scholarships for ICT practitioners in the government. Outside of the scholarship program, anyone aged 18 and above can complete the certificate online in under six months of part-time study — with no degree or experience required. Globally, cyberattacks increased nearly 40 percent over the last year, putting critical infrastructure such as governments, hospitals, electrical grids, schools and businesses at greater risk. There are not enough workers to address these threats — a global shortage of 3.5 million cybersecurity workers is projected through 2025. Google's Cybersecurity Certificate will prepare people for entry-level roles by training them to identify common cyber risks, threats and vulnerabilities and how to mitigate them by protecting networks, devices, people and data from unauthorized access and cyber-attacks. Learners will get hands-on experience using Python, Linux and various security programs, including Security Information and Event Management tools. The program will also prepare people for the CompTIA Security+ exam, the industry-leading certification for cybersecurity roles — they will earn a dual credential when they complete both. "Creating more pathways for Filipinos to acquire the right digital skills and competitively enter cybersecurity is essential. Google is deeply committed to working closely with our local partners across the public and private sectors to help develop the next generation of cybersecurity workforce and experts in the country," said Bernadette Nacario, country director, Google Philippines. "The Cybersecurity Google Career Certificate will help in the upskilling of the Filipino workforce to be globally competitive. This will also equip them with the skills needed to be resilient against cyber attacks and build a safer and more secure online world. The DICT thanks Google for this generous effort in helping the Philippines in its digital transformation journey and looks forward to more opportunities for cooperation," said DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy. Camiling to start cashless payments in palengke, jeepney rides
Cashless payment in public markets and transportation – something our Asian neighbors have been doing for quite some time – is finally gaining traction here in the country. Soon, leaving your wallet behind on the way to the market isn't that bad. For as long as you have your smartphone with you. Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas gave it a big push after BSP Deputy Governor Bernadette Romulo-Puyat on Friday headed the launch of “Paleng-QR Ph Plus” at Camiling Market in Tarlac. The provincial government recently passed a resolution encouraging its cities and municipalities to help promote cashless deals in everyday transactions from vendors to public utility transport. “It is an honor to be with you today as we mark the milestone of making Tarlac digitalized and financially inclusive province. The people of Tarlac can now enjoy the many benefits of cashless payments,” Puyat said. Other local government units which adopted the program are the cities of Baguio, Davao, Tagbilaran, Naga, Lapu-Lapu, Pasig, and Bacolod. In coordination with the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the BSP promotes digital payments in accordance with the National Strategy for Financial Inclusion 2022-2028. “Truly it is the LGU that drives the implementation of the Paleng-QR Ph Plus,” added Puyat Landbank had earlier called for the adoption of such financial technology taking its cue from BSP. MMDA boosts personnel health care
The Philippine Health Insurance Corp. has created a package of benefits for personnel of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority through a memorandum of understanding signed by the two agencies. Under the “KonSulta Program,” the package includes preventive care consultations, health risks screening and assessment, 13 laboratory tests, and 21 maintenance drugs and medicines. KonSulta stands for “Konsultasyong Sulit at Tama.” “We thank the PhilHealth-National Capital Region for its ‘KonSulta Program’ that offers accessible health care services. It would benefit our employees to prevent or manage chronic diseases,” MMDA acting chairperson Don Artes said. Artes and MMDA general manager Undersecretary Procopio Lipana inked the MoA for MMDA while PhilHealth-NCR vice president Dr. Bernadette Lico signed it for the state health insurer in simple ceremonies at the MMDA head office in Pasig City. With the agreement, the MMDA shall monitor the implementation of the KonSulta Program availed of by its personnel and ensure the accreditation of the MMDA medical clinic. The MMDA clinic shall perform preventive health services such as health screening and assessment according to the life stage and health risks of individuals. Artes expressed his gratitude to PhilHealth-NCR for providing an MMDA personnel a package aimed at boosting their access to primary care services. For her part, Dr. Lico thanked the MMDA for a fruitful collaboration with PhilHealth-NCR. “I would like to convey my utmost gratitude to the dynamic chairman of MMDA and its officers for collaborating with us. Existing hospitals’ extensions sought
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Wednesday that the government is considering building “extensions” for existing hospitals to provide more specialized medical services for Filipinos. Marcos made the announcement after he led a series of groundbreaking ceremonies of the Pambansang Pabahay Para sa Pilipino Housing Program in Bulacan. In a media interview, Marcos said that provinces other than Metro Manila should also have specialist hospitals. “I said it should not only be in Manila. Our agreement is instead of building a new hospital, we will just extend existing hospitals to have a specialty department with a few beds so that it can function as a specialty hospital,” Marcos said. “So that’s our plan. We are currently pinpointing the areas where we will implement it. We are studying the challenges we faced during the pandemic, identifying the areas where patients had difficulties accessing healthcare services or where they had to be brought far away, and we will establish these specialty departments in those locations,” he added. According to the President, the government is currently determining the locations where these “extensions” can be installed, adding that they are considering how the country has dealt with issues in the healthcare sector brought on by pandemics. “We are looking at our experiences during the pandemic, where patients had difficulties and where they had to be brought too far away. We will establish these specialty departments in those locations where patients need them the most,” Marcos said. The President also led the groundbreaking ceremony of the St. Bernadette Children and Maternity Hospital in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan on Wednesday. The Chief Executive said that the St. Bernadette Children and Maternity Hospital is also a specialty hospital because it is intended to address women and children’s health needs. “Those places that have --- for example, weak localized healthcare, we will establish specialty hospitals there to assist those who will get sick. Whatever it may be,” Marcos said. He highlighted the significance of specialty hospitals such as the Philippine Heart Center, Philippine Lung Center, National Children’s Hospital, and National Kidney and Transplant Institute, particularly during the pandemic, in his inaugural State of the Nation Address.
