PAGCOR Photography Contest 2023 winners bared
The results of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation’s Photography Contest 2023 were revealed today, 13 September, with PAGCOR’s announcement of the 24 grand winners from among 5,400 entries nationwide. The 12 winners in the conventional photography category received P80,000 each in cash prizes, while the 12 winners in the mobile category took home P35,000 each – the biggest prizes so far in the history of PAGCOR’s photo contest. PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Alejandro Tengco, who graced the event, said the agency was overwhelmed by the huge turnout of participants for the competition, which made a comeback this year following a six-year hiatus. “We were overwhelmed by the significant number of participants who joined this photo competition. Because of this project’s success, we will make this photography competition an annual event,” Tengco said. “At dahil naging matagumpay ang photo contest na ito, we will refine this para maging isang kilalang photography competition organized by PAGCOR. Umasa din kayo na dadagdagan pa natin ang prizes sa mga susunod na taon,” he said. Tengco said this year’s contest, with the theme “Sa’n Tayo Next?”, showcased relatively unknown but beautiful destinations of the Philippines that hold huge potentials of becoming major tourist spots. “The winning photos showed just how beautiful the Philippines is. So, instead of going abroad, we encourage all Filipinos to explore the beauty of our country and help promote domestic tourism,” he added. There were three winners each from Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and Metro Manila in both categories. The non-winning grand finalists for the conventional category also received P25,000 while the mobile category grand finalists received P10,000. “The Golden View of Mt. Utopia”, captured by 32-year-old self-taught photographer Reymund Requina from Cebu City, bagged one of the grand prizes under the conventional category. “Sobrang blessing in disguise ng photography sa akin. Nung panahong walang wala ako, itong photography ang sumalba sa akin kaya sobra-sobra talaga ang pasasalamat ko rito,” Requina said. The other conventional category winners were Aljon P. Tugaoen (Over and Under the Rocks of Pangil); Gerardo S. Pacios, Jr. (Batok); Dionisis Q. Silva (Amazing Cave); Louie Lawrence B. Lacson (Side Trip Tayo sa Kabalin-An Pond); Jumelito S. Capilo (The Elusive View of Panimahawa); Alvin B. Cempron (Malitbog); Oliver M. Atienza (Kalinaw sa Malinao (Tranquility of Malinao)); Earl Ryan G. Janubas (Splendid Impasugong); Klienne M. Eco (Payapang Umaga); Macbeth T. Omega (A Filipino Masterpiece - The Maligcong Rice Terraces); and Christopher G. Andres (Celebrating Centuries of Cultivation). The 12 mobile category winners, meanwhile, were Nicko A. Melendres (The Mighty Casaroro Falls); John Rhoel V. Florentino (The Last of the Last Frontier); Celbert A. Palaganas (Remnants of the Golden Past); Rowell C. Clenuar (The Alicia Panoramic Park); Jack David C. Ponpon (Philippines meets the Pacific); Daryl P. Anahaw (Playground of the Gods); Anthony T. Into (Green Dots of Hope); Jessie James Jalon F. Esteban (The Next Chapter: Discovering New Frontiers of El Nido Beach); Sherbien M. Dacalanio (Warzone to Wow Zone); Alvin Mike M. Mahait (The Gentle Pawikan of Negros); Gerard Jonathan C. Laserna (Gentle Beast); and Ronald P. Portula (Tropical State of Mind). Mindanao regional screening judge and nature and commercial photographer Edwin Martinez commended PAGCOR for reviving the competition, which highlighted the country’s vast tourism potentials. “This is a very good project as it does not only help develop the talent of our photographers but, more importantly, promotes our tourism industry especially the places that are not so famous but can rival the other known spots in the country in terms of beauty,” he said. The other prominent photographers and artists who served as judges were Jijo de Guzman, Bobot Go, Lauren Malcampo, Wig Tysmans, Pepper Teehankee, Edwin Tuyay, Jo Avila, Jilson Tiu, Ernie Sarmiento, Wawi Navarozza, Sherwin Magsino and Noel Guevara. Chinese zoo denies rare sun bear is human in disguise
A Chinese zoo has been forced to deny that its sun bear is actually a human in a costume, after footage of one standing on its hind legs raised online accusations of a furry imposter. A video clip of a bear rearing up and interacting with a group of people at a zoo in eastern Hangzhou city went viral on Chinese social media. Many users posted comments doubting that the bear was real, with some alleging that its bipedal posture and wrinkled skin suggested that it was actually a human in costume. But the zoo dismissed the rumors, saying in a statement written from the bear's perspective on Sunday that the animal was real and its detractors "really don't understand me". "The zoo director called me after work yesterday and asked if I'd been slacking off by finding a two-legged beast to replace me," the bear, named Angela, said in the statement. "Some people thought the way I stand up looks too human... so I will stress again: I'm a sun bear!" Native to Southeast Asia, sun bears are named for a patch of bright orange or cream-colored chest fur that stands out against the rest of its jet-black coat. It is the smallest bear -- about the size of a large dog -- and is listed as a vulnerable species due to deforestation and the global wildlife trade. Other Chinese zoos have previously been accused of stocking their enclosures with animals that are not what they seem -- including a hairy dog passed off as an "African lion" and a pool filled with penguin-shaped balloons. Manila Day showcases city’s very best
The Manila Day parade and celebration of the capital city’s 452nd founding anniversary on Saturday, 24 June, were a rousing success, according to Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna. “I am so pleased with the outcome of the parade,” Lacuna said in a post-event interview. “The weather was perfect, and the participation rate was 100 percent. I would like to thank all of the participants for their hard work and dedication.” The event was held at Plaza Moriones and featured a spectacular presentation of dance, floats, and costumes by government and private entities. “It’s full of fun!” Lacuna said. “I am so proud of our city and our people. We showed the world what Manila is all about today.” The parade was organized by the Manila City government and involved all city departments. It was a four-month undertaking that required the coordination of all city officials, ranging from congressmen and councilors to police, firefighters, Filipino-Chinese business groups, health workers, professionals, hospital workers, and barangays. Each group gave their own numbers, complete with costumes and dance performances. Lacuna thanked all participants for their support and vowed to make next year’s Manila Day even bigger. “I promise that because of your support and love for our city, we will prepare for a bigger celebration next year,” she said. The parade was just one of the many events that took place in Manila on Saturday to celebrate the city’s 452nd founding anniversary. Other events included a beauty pageant, a concert, and a fireworks display. “This is a day to celebrate our city’s rich history and culture,” Lacuna said. “I am so proud to be the mayor of Manila, and I am excited to see what the future holds for our city.” Meanwhile, Malate candidate Gabrielle Lanzter was crowned Miss Manila 2023 during the Coronation Night held in the evening of 23 June at the Metropolitan Theater. A total of 22 women vied for the title of Miss Manila 2023, which showcased their beauty, intelligence, and commitment to making a positive impact in their community. Mayor Lacuna crowned and sashed Lanzter, assisted by Vice Mayor Yul Servo, and tourism department chief Charlie Dungo. Grabbing runnersup honors were Karen Nicole Piccio of Pureza, Sta. Mesa; Francine Tajanlangit, representing Roxas Boulevard; and Anne De Mesa of Sta. Mesa. Angela Okol of Paco was adjudged Miss Manila Tourism. Two-time Grammy winner Peabo Bryson in Manila, Cebu, Davao
Ovation Productions is bringing back the top-tier adult contemporary balladeer Peabo Bryson to the Philippines. The two-time GRAMMY winner and Living Legend Trumpet Awardee is set to hold his Philippine concert tour 2023 in Manila on 19 July at the New Frontier Theater, in Cebu on 21 July at the Waterfront Hotel, and in Davao on 23 July at SMX Convention Center. New York Times music critic Jon Pareles called Bryson the “Pavarotti of soul singers”. His duets with Natalie Cole — What You Won’t Do for Love — and Roberta Flack — Tonight, I Celebrate My Love, a Top 15 pop smash — earned Bryson the tag “King of Balladeers.” It was two songs for Disney animated films that earned Peabo his two Grammys: 1991’s Beauty and the Beast with international pop singer Celine Dion and A Whole New World from Aladdin which he performed with Regina Belle. Both won Oscars for “Best Song.” Bryson has also collaborated with Tony Award-winner Lea Salonga on We Kiss in the Shadows (number one on the Classical Crossover chart from a new recording of The King and I score), Melissa Manchester’s Lovers After All, and Kenny G’s By the Time This Night is Over. Demonstrating his skills as an actor, he appeared in the lead role for the touring production of the Tony Award-winning Raisin (based on Raisin In The Sun) and in the role of The Wizard in a touring company of The Wiz. In 1998, he appeared in the Michigan Opera Theater’s 100th anniversary production of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and recorded two songs for the soundtrack for the Barney movie, one of which, the Bryson-produced Dreams, became the lead song for the album. In late 2005 Peabo released Live in Concert: Ladies’ Request in association with Time-Life, for whom he has been the spokesman for their soul retrospective collection. Live In Concert is an excellent collection that covers many of Peabo’s biggest hits and shows that his voice is still as strong and smooth as ever; to date it has sold over 3 million copies. He followed this in early 2006 with The Very Best of Peabo Bryson, a compilation of his biggest hits recorded on multiple record labels. Tickets for Peabo Bryson’s Philippine Tour 2023 are available at TICKETNET.com.ph. Ticket selling for Cebu and Davao will start on 4 June, available at SMTICKETS.com. Sofia Salomon angling to become first trans Miss Venezuela
Sofia Salomon is the picture of concentration as she poses in bathing suits and evening wear for a photo shoot in preparation for what could be a historic campaign. The 25-year-old model is hoping to become the first-ever transgender woman to vie for the Miss Venezuela crown. "All eyes are on Miss Venezuela," she told AFP. "Me being there would be making history." Venezuela is one of the top producers of "Miss" pageant winners: It holds seven Miss Universe titles and six for Miss World. Beauty competitions are a way of life in the crisis-stricken South American country, with a guaranteed TV viewership of millions for the national pageant. "Like football is very important in other countries, here it is very important to be a beauty queen," Salomon said between poses. "When a girl is growing up, if she is tall, skinny, everyone tells her that she should go to Miss Venezuela. So it is something we grow up with, it is a culture, it is a feeling." Online entries for this year's Miss Venezuela pageant close next Wednesday, after which a panel will interview a shortlist and select 24 finalists. Organizers did not respond to AFP's queries about whether or not there would be any limitations on Salomon's participation in a deeply conservative and often homophobic society. Watch the video here: Support and love Salomon's campaign has drawn much attention on social media -- both messages of support and homophobic abuse. But she takes it all in stride. "Ever since I can remember, I have always had the support of my dad, my mom, and all my family," she told AFP. "I had an excellent childhood full of respect, of love, and so everything becomes easier because you can show society who you really are." Salomon took part last year in the Miss International Queen pageant in Thailand, the biggest for trans women, and made it into the top six. "There were many messages on social networks" from people who wanted me to "participate in another contest," she recounted. "Now that Miss Universe and Miss World accept transgender girls, this opportunity has opened for me to participate in Miss Venezuela." Angela Ponce broke barriers when in 2018, as Miss Spain, she became the first transgender contestant in Miss Universe. 'Hell for many' For Salomon, it is not only about personal glory but also giving "visibility" to people like her in a conservative society. She models in Spain and Mexico and has her own clothing brand. But not everyone is so lucky. "Being trans in Venezuela is hell for many people," said Richelle Briceno, a trans woman and activist. "It is to be excluded and it is to be excluded from equal opportunities." Salomon's high profile holds a positive message for Venezuelan society, added Briceno, that "trans people survive here and we impose ourselves in the good sense of the word." Argentina led the pack in Latin America by recognizing official gender changes in 2012, followed by Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru among others. Venezuela has no legislation in this area, allowing people only to change their names and even this is difficult, according to LGBTQ activists. Salomon has both Venezuelan and Colombian nationalities. In Colombia, unlike her country of birth, she is recognized as a woman. Venezuela also does not allow same-sex couples to marry or adopt children. "Whatever happens, I will remain a successful woman," Salomon told AFP.
