Another Ecuador politician slain, six days ahead of vote
A local politician in Ecuador was killed Monday, party officials said, less than a week after a presidential front-runner was gunned down at a campaign rally ahead of this weekend's elections. Pedro Briones, a member of the Citizen Revolution Party of former president Rafael Correa, and one of the movement's leaders in the province of Esmeraldas on the border with Colombia, was killed by unknown gunmen. "My solidarity with the family of comrade Pedro Briones, new victim of violence," Luisa Gonzalez, one of the main presidential candidates, said on X, the social media platform formerly called Twitter. "Ecuador is going through its bloodiest period," said Gonzalez, a close former associate of Correa. She called the government inept and said the country has been taken over by organized crime gangs. Correa added his condolences on social media: "They murdered another of our colleagues in Esmeraldas. Enough is enough!" Neither the police nor the government immediately confirmed the attack but Ecuadoran media, citing a local police source, said the victim was shot at his home in the town of San Mateo by two men on a motorcycle who later fled. The murder came less than a week after the August 9 killing, in the capital Quito, of one of the presidential favorites, the centrist Fernando Villavicencio. The 59-year-old journalist was on a crusade against corruption and was in second place in the polls when he was shot as he left a campaign rally. One of his main feats as a journalist was to have put the former president Correa, who served from 2007-2017, in the dock thanks to one of his investigations. Correa, now living in Belgium, was sentenced in absentia to eight years in the case. Most of Ecuador has been under a state of emergency and President Guillermo Lasso has blamed organized crime for the killing of Villavicencio. Six Colombians were arrested as part of the probe into the assassination and one was killed shortly after the attack by the candidate's bodyguards. Running mate of slain Ecuadoran candidate to run for president
The running mate of slain Ecuadoran candidate Fernando Villavicencio will run for president in his place in the 20 August elections, their party said Saturday. "The movement will replace the presidential ticket by putting Andrea Gonzalez as president," the centrist Construye party said in a statement. Villavicencio, a 59-year-old journalist, and prominent anti-corruption crusader, was gunned down as he left a campaign rally in the capital Quito on Wednesday night. President Guillermo Lasso has blamed the murder on organized crime. Gonzalez, 36, is due to participate in Sunday's presidential debate in Quito. Her work has been focused on environmental advocacy, particularly concerning oceans and mangroves, as well as combatting wildlife trafficking and deforestation. "The name of the vice presidential candidate will be announced in the next hours and will be chosen among the most trusted of those who have shared the struggles of comrade Fernando Villavicencio," the party said. Six Colombians have so far been arrested and another killed over the assassination. The post Running mate of slain Ecuadoran candidate to run for president appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
No more Reds in the South
When Corazon Aquino took over the helm of government courtesy of Uncle Sam, among her first acts under her revolutionary power was to release from detention Jose Maria Sison, the chieftain of the Communist Party of the Philippines and the New People’s Army. At the time, in Davao City, the NPA had been decimated via a people’s counter-revolution. Whatever remained of the armed urban partisans had sought refuge in the mountains while the ideologues among them managed to seek shelter in the party-list system, a mantle of protection for the Reds under the Cory Constitution. For his part, Joma fled to the Netherlands after he was released, never to return to the Philippines. Utrecht was Nirvana compared to the inhospitable jungles back home. Despite the distance, Joma was able to remotely conduct operations against government troops and tutor would-be ideologues in his convoluted mix of a Maoist and Leninist potion. Joma was a master of deceit. Imagine being able to live comfortably and, who knows, receiving aid from the Netherlands for packaging himself as a fugitive who had sought asylum to escape “oppression” at home. Not only that, past administrations sought him out in that faraway land for peace negotiations. And he made them believe he was for peace. It took some time for then-President Rodrigo Duterte to finally realize that the master of double talk had been using the peace talks to regroup, recruit and rearm. Digong finally scrapped the peace negotiations and turned instead to a holistic strategy: an all-out campaign against what was dubbed as the Communist Terrorist Group; and setting up the NTF-ELCAC as a mechanism to lure the CTGs to give up their cause and live a peaceful and productive life. Joma felt the impact mentally and physically. He died watching the crumbling of his murderous organization that had tried in vain to prop up an irrelevant ideology through extortion and shameless begging from naive European donor foundations in the guise of human rights aid. This a supreme irony since the EU had listed the CPP-NPA as a terrorist organization. This week the last of the top CPP-NPA leaders in Mindanao who had been operating in Davao de Oro was finally arrested in Malaysia as he was about to board a boat for Thailand. Eric Jun Casilao, secretary of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee and the Central Committee and a member of the Communist Party of the Philippines. Casilao and his wife, who are both facing strings of murder and kidnapping cases, among others, abandoned their group in Davao de Oro in May 2021. He had with him the operational funds of the SMRC when he disappeared. The military had been hot on his trail following intensified pursuit operations and a strategic campaign by the NTF-ELCAC. Davao de Oro has since been declared insurgent-free with the surrender of several NPA field commanders and combatants. We owe it to the Malaysian authorities who captured Casilao. Among those who would have celebrated his capture was his NPA comrade, Crispin Rollon, who was strangled to death by Casilao himself. The NTF-ELCAC learned from interviews of surrenderers that Casilao did not only torture and refuse food to the extremely starving and debilitated Rollon, but he eventually strangled him to death. Meanwhile, the 10th ID of the Philippine Army just declared that they will cleanse their area of operations — the Davao Region, Bukidnon, and eastern Mindanao — of NPA terrorists by June this year. The Reds will eventually be vanquished. The post No more Reds in the South appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
