Manila distributing more lots, says Lacuna
Having given land to 600 landless families during her first year in office, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna is now setting her sights on distributing more land to benefit 1,899 families in the capital city. She said handing out lots to landless Manila residents is the first step for them to build their dream homes in parallel with the city’s distribution of dwellings in buildings it has constructed. According to city hall officials, the land distribution would also encourage informal settlers to stop squatting or occupying private lands. Lacuna said that at least 330 lots would be given to landless families in Manila in the coming months as the city ratchets up efforts to procure private lots for distribution. “We are here to help them realize their dreams of having their own land,” Lacuna said. As vice mayor to then-Mayor Isko Moreno, Lacuna had seen the city’s efforts to provide dwellings to the urban poor in the city, including at the so-called Binondominium and Tondominium. Meanwhile, Lacuna stressed that she is prioritizing infrastructure projects in the city, including the present rehabilitation of the Lagusnilad, even if the passageway is under the national government. Likewise, the city is aiming to establish an animal shelter and a veterinary clinic in Vitas, Tondo, along with a slaughterhouse and columbarium north of Manila. Lacuna said the lighting of major roads and streets is being undertaken without letup to keep pedestrians, motorists and other road users safe at night. “Progress is mirrored by progressive infrastructure,” the city’s first female mayor said. ‘Treasure hunters’ saved from excavation site
PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan — Emergency responders in a remote village here rescued five individuals who were suspected to be Yamashita treasure hunters after they encountered difficulty breathing and eventually lost consciousness due to severe lack of oxygen at an excavation site that reached a depth of approximately 100 feet. Puerto Princesa City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head Earl Timbancaya identified the diggers as Philip Antonio, Mark Vincent Monilla, Alberto Saratao, Angelito Duran and a 17-year-old minor. He said the incident took place at 11:20 a.m. on 12 July in Barangay Luzviminda, as the five men were operating a pump to drain the water that had accumulated below the site they were digging. Three out of the five individuals who were rescued were taken to the Luzviminda Satellite Clinic in order to recuperate after experiencing suffocation. Timbancaya said this included one person who was completely unconscious when they were extricated by their personnel and the team from the Bureau of Fire Protection Fortunately, there were no fatalities. Luzviminda barangay Captain Laddy Hemang, meanwhile, said the local office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, City Environment and Natural Resources Office and police have already inspected the area and told the owner to cease operations. He said the owner of the property, Ricardo Pucot, was the main proponent of the treasure hunting that is allegedly partly funded by a Korean national. He said Pucot’s group has been engaged in excavating the site for nearly three years with the objective of locating the war loot belonging to Yamashita. Bird ban
African penguins are an endangered species. From a population of 50,000 mating pairs inhabiting the shorelines of South Africa and Namibia 30 years ago, their number has dropped to 10,000 pairs, Africa News reported. In South Africa, the species have colonies on Bird Island, about 60 kilometers off the town of Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth. Many live in rock cracks after losing their natural nests made of guano to poachers who sell it as fertilizer. Without a nest, young, featherless penguins are susceptible to drowning and hypothermia. Survivors are rescued, treated, and fed by veterinarians and volunteers of the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds. Once the penguins recover at its rehabilitation clinic in Gqeberha, the birds are returned to the wild. Meanwhile, in central Florida, USA, parents, students, and two authors are spearheading the return of “three penguins” that were banned by the Lake County school district. They sued local education officials before the US District Court for Middle Florida on 20 June for allegedly violating the First Amendment of the Constitution and demanded the recall of the ban reportedly instigated by the state governor through the so-called Don’t Say Gay law. In the lawsuit, authors Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson invoked their right to freedom of expression and protection against censorship. The banned penguins are fictional characters in the children’s storybook, “And Tango Makes Three.” The book written by Parnell and Richardson is about two male penguins at New York City’s Central Park Zoo that adopted a baby penguin named Tango after its mother died. The ban imposed last year disallowed students from kindergarten through third grade from reading the book published in 2005, on the ground that sexual orientation and gender identity instruction are inappropriate for such young children, according to NBC News. Beauty clinic sets expansion this year
Estetika Wellness & Beauty Clinic in Alabang expects to open a new branch of its wellness center this year. During the company’s first anniversary celebration this month, founder Rachel Villanueva said the company is doing good and is on track for expansion. “Customers are going back, and we're even stronger now. Estetika is the authority when it comes to eyebrows and lashes. For this year we will expand, maybe two branches more," she said. “We will continue to expand and improve our partnership with local government units for our corporate social responsibility, offering our services to those who can’t afford them. We already provided free eyebrow sessions and other services in a barangay in Quezon City where I used to live. As they say, 'kilay is life' so it gives confidence to customers if their eyebrow is defined. That’s our edge compared to competitors,” she added. Villanueva's partner Dexter Co, the president of Automotive Icon and Estetika’s subsidiary AutoFlare, said the economy is now perking up from the adverse effects of the pandemic. Villanueva first put up AutoFlare, a company that sells pre-owned luxury vehicles such as BMW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche and Audi. Co, through the years, has held the dealership of prestigious car brands such as Chrysler, Mazda, MG, Chevrolet, Nissan and Foton.
