Former Starbucks CEO Schultz steps down from board
Starbucks said Wednesday its former chief executive Howard Schultz will step down from the coffee chain's board of directors "as part of a planned transition." Schultz, who ended his third stint as CEO in March, helped transform the brand from a small coffee shop into an international chain over the decades. "I look forward to supporting this next generation of leaders to steward Starbucks into the future as a customer, supporter, and advocate in my role as chairman emeritus," the longtime Starbucks leader said in a statement. In 2017, Schultz stepped aside as chief executive after his second tenure, handing the reins to Kevin Johnson. He later announced his retirement from the company and weighed a run for US president. When Johnson left in 2022 after five years at the helm, Schultz returned as interim CEO, before Laxman Narasimhan took over the position in March this year. In the company's statement on Wednesday, it also announced that Wei Zhang, most recently a senior advisor to Alibaba Group, has been elected to the board of directors effective 1 October. Starbucks has in recent times come under fire over its confrontational approach to unionization, with Schultz defending against allegations it had violated US labor laws in countering the campaign. In a hearing convened by progressive Senator Bernie Sanders earlier this year, Schultz said he was unaware of instances where workers were fired or relocated to other stores because of union activity. Today, the Seattle-based corporation has more than 36,000 stores in 86 markets globally, according to the company. The Department of Agriculture on Monday reported that it launched its first Kadiwa pop-up store at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City in collaboration with the Bureau of Corrections providing persons deprived of liberty, as well as residents and BuCor employees, direct access to fresh and affordable food and basic commodities. Ruel Gesmundo, Assistant Director for Regulatory Services of the Bureau of Plant Industry said during the inauguration ceremony held Friday that BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang warmly welcomes them at the opening of the Kadiwa store, recognizing its benefits for the entire community. The goods being sold at the Kadiwa pop-up store in Bilibid include assorted highland and lowland vegetables, fruits, eggs, assorted smoked and dried fish, mushroom products, coffee, noodles, cooking oil and herbal oils. Through its Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service, the DA has been actively expanding Kadiwa outlets across Metro Manila in a bid to empower the farming community through the establishment of a direct and efficient food supply chain. Sandwich chain Subway nears deal to be bought for more than $9-B
The Subway sandwich chain is near a deal to be acquired for more than $9 billion in a transaction that could be announced as soon as Wednesday, a person familiar with the matter said. Bids for the sandwich chain were due Tuesday, the person said, with competing offers from Roark Capital and a consortium that includes private equity firms TDR and Sycamore. The winner is expected to be the high bid in an all-cash deal. Originally founded in 1965 as an Italian-style submarine sandwich shop, Subway today has nearly 37,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries. The fast-food chain announced in February it hired JPMorgan to advise it on a possible sale while saying it "remains committed to the future," according to a 14 February press release. A Subway spokesperson said Tuesday there would be no comment "until the transaction has been completed," according to an email to AFP. Atlanta-based Roark is well-known in the fast-food and prepared foods space, already owning Buffalo Wild Wings, Baskin-Robbins, and Seattle's Best Coffee, as well as other assets including Orange Theory gyms. Roark "has shown that it knows how to nurture restaurant brands and help them to grow, including through expansion," said Neil Saunders of GlobalData Retail. New York-based Sycamore and British firm TDR Capital also have investments in the consumer space. TDR declined to comment. Roark and Sycamore did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Subway was launched with a single sandwich shop in Connecticut by Fred DeLuca, who started with an initial $1,000 investment from family friend Peter Buck, as a way to pay his college tuition. The two men famously started the venture based only on a handshake. DeLuca died in 2015, while Buck passed away in 2021. In recent times, Subway executives have highlighted cost-cutting efforts to better compete with other restaurant chains, while focusing most growth efforts overseas. Prior to the pandemic, these were the lone attractions drawing visitors to the capital of Lanao del Sur. For those desiring a tourist experience, a mere half-day in Marawi gave you everything you needed. Times have changed, however. During a recent return to my beloved hometown, I found myself pleasantly taken aback by the exquisite accommodations I was provided at the newly established Ridge Hotel. Going back to Tamparan During my journey, a valuable opportunity presented itself to reconnect with friends spanning different generations. I had the privilege of conducting an interview and was assured by one of the locals that exploring Tamparan is a safe endeavor, owing to the commendable leadership of Mayor Juhar Dimaporo Disomimba. Tamparan envisions itself as the agro-ecotourism and commercial center of Lanao del Sur. It aims to cultivate a community of God-loving and empowered citizens who thrive in a peaceful, resilient, safe and ecologically-balanced environment. This vision is supported by a progressive and transparent governance system that fosters growth and development. ARBO value-chain strategy offers solid ground for MASAGANA rice program
The value chain strategy for agricultural products, which the Department of Agrarian Reform piloted in 2013, particularly on farm clustering, marketing, and linking smallholders to providers of inputs and credit, would be a solid ground for the four strategies of the Department of Agriculture’s MASAGANA Rice Industry Development Program (MRIDP). The DAR’s ARBO (Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Organization) clustering program, in partnership with Caritas’ Catholic Relief Service, was piloted in 2013 in Bukidnon (in three sites) and Misamis Oriental (two sites). Phase 1 involved linking ARBs with the corporate supply chain, which lasted until 2015, said Assistant Director Lita Rosales of DAR’s Bureau of Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Development. Then Phase 2—from 2015 to 2017—involved linking farmer smallholders to markets with microfinance. The sites involved in this phase expanded to 98. Phase 3 after 2017 (which was disrupted a bit by the pandemic) already covered 150 sites of clustered farms in practically the entire country, she explained. DAR’s mandate was always to work with ARBOs and clusters formed by them, which DAR linked with suppliers of farm inputs, corporate markets, and providers of farm machinery and post-harvest technologies. The DAR’s ARBO program covered farm clusters producing coconut, corn, sugar, cacao, coffee, livestock, poultry and fisheries, and even rice. With the MIRDP set to be fully adopted, the wealth of experience of ARBOs can hasten the learning curve of newly-organized clusters to be formed by the different attached agencies of the DA. These include the irrigators associations (both national and communal irrigation systems) of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), the SWISAs (or small water irrigation systems associations) of the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM), and rice farm cooperatives registered with the Cooperatives Development Authority (CDA). Farmer-members of these groups must be registered with the Registry System for the Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA) to avail of government interventions. The DA met with DAR and BSWM last 12 July to discuss how the clustering of farmers would be expedited and a follow-up meeting for this purpose has been set for 16 August. Since ARBOs are covered by the Agrarian Production Credit Program (APCP) jointly implemented by the DA, DAR, and the Land Bank of the Philippines, they can avail of loans under the program and in turn, re-lend to eligible ARBs to finance their agri-production projects and activities. The APCP aims to achieve sustainable crop production and increase the incomes of ARBs and their households through the provision of credit and capacity-building assistance. The other DAR programs for ARBOs that could jibe with the thrusts and strategies of MIRDP are stocks and market liberalization, land reform (including the development of land markets), agro-processing and input supply channels, urban finance, and market institutions. MRIDP's MASAGANA stands for MAtatag (climate change adaptation or resiliency), SAma-sama (clustering and consolidation of farms), GAnado (motivated farmers in the rice value chain), and NApapanahon (digital transformation to improve farming practices and program implementation). "MAtatag" aims to boost farmers' climate change resiliency by adjusting the planting calendar during the wet season, shifting main production to the dry season, and promoting crop diversification and crop-livestock-fisheries integration using balanced fertilization, proper irrigation, and other climate-smart practices. "SAma-sama" seeks to create economies of scale by clustering farmers and consolidating farms at the barangay and municipal levels and converging interventions. They will be linked to millers and the NFA, enabling cooperation between farmers, millers, and government institutions to achieve better prices, better quality rice, and appropriate seed distribution. This, too, is the essence of "GAnado", or the value chain approach. "NApapanahon" supports the first three approaches by providing timely and accurate information for decision-making, making interventions digitally based, location-specific, and efficient. The MIRDP will support rice clusters with seeds, fertilizers, and soil ameliorants; training-related activities; credit programs and loan facilities; crop insurance; market assistance; irrigation projects (NIS, CIS, and Small Water Impounding Projects), production and post-harvest machinery and equipment and facilities. Largest hotel operator With the opening of Belmont Hotel, alongside Savoy Hotel, Megaworld Hotels and Resorts now has a combined room keys of 1,100, the largest number of room keys in the entire Mactan Island. At the same time, it makes Megaworld the largest developer and operator in the entire Cebu province today. “Belmont means Beautiful Mountain in French,” says Harold Geronimo, Megaworld’s vice president for public relations and media affairs. “It was a name created by our chairman Dr. Andrew L. Tan when we launched the first Belmont Hotel in Newport City. He fell in love with the name. He just wanted to create a new brand for Megaworld Hotels and Resorts because the first brand that we introduced was Richmonde Hotel. The second brand was Belmont.” The first Belmont Hotel was opened in 2015 at Newport City in Pasay City. It was followed by Belmont Hotel Boracay. Soon, the fourth Belmont Hotel will open in Iloilo City. Geronimo adds that Belmont Hotel will complement the Savoy Hotel inside the township because the vision of Megaworld is to be able to expand its portfolio of hotels in Mactan Island. They want to cater to more business and leisure travelers. “When we open Savoy Hotel, we notice there has been a high demand for those types of travelers who want to do business meetings here, as well as families and tourists who are on vacation in Mactan Island. Kathryna Yu-Pimentel’s success recipes: ‘Good partners, location, products, service’
There are no shortcuts to success, says entrepreneur Kathryna Yu-Pimentel. At the start of her career, the self-taught culinary artist was pushed into the extremes while running her now-defunct food services. Humbled by the lessons she’s learned from her initial ventures, she has moved on to team up with other partners for her current businesses and has been reaping in it with the Singaporean casual dining restaurant chain Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice and Alpina Lounge and Wellness. Entrepreneurship came naturally to Kathryna who started earning money in her elementary and high school days by making and selling polvoron and cookies. In college, she supplied 500 packed cookies a week to a classmate who owned a coffee cart in the school. After graduation, they became suppliers to lobby coffee shops and school canteens. Likewise, she ran her own catering business and an Italian restaurant. Shifted careers Kathryna shifted careers when she worked at the law firm of her future husband Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III and at the Senate office upon his election. Six years ago, she came upon Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice restaurant while on a trip to Singapore. Its long name distinguishes itself from Tiong Bahru, Singapore’s oldest neighborhood and tourist destination. Located in the hawkers’ area, the restaurant attracted long queues of office workers. The come-on was the bite-size pieces of succulent Hainanese chicken on fragrant turmeric rice with ginger, chili and hoisin sauces. “It was a hearty meal yet you didn’t feel the guilt because the chicken was not fried,” says Kathryna. Chicken rice Whenever she visited in Singapore, she kept returning to Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice. In 2019, Kathryna and several partners, including the Singaporean owner established the local corporation, Tiong Bahru Philippines, which aims owns and manage its restaurants here. The restaurant opened at MET Live Mall in Pasay City followed by a branch at Easton Place in Makati. Lockdowns notwithstanding, the businesses flourished with its healthy offerings and efficient delivery. The famous chicken rice dish clicked because it offered top quality and value for money for less than P300 for a solo serving. Some customers kept ordering daily. Post-pandemic, Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice now has seven outlets in the metropolis. The flagship restaurant was recently inaugurated at the Eastwood Mall. The eighth branch is slated to open at the Greenhills Shopping Center later in the year. Aside from the poached and roasted chickens, with their tender and juicy meat, the restaurant chain is also known for its tofu appetizer with sweet chili sauce, the sausage-like kikiam Singapore, and the beef and fish head curries. Cooked on-site A major advantage is that the food is cooked on-site to guarantee freshness. Before each restaurant opening, the Singaporean principal, Andrew Koh, trains the kitchen staff to ensure authenticity in taste. Customers seek fresh taste and healthy meals at pocket-friendly prices. Kathryna attributes Tiong Bahru’s success to her harmonious relationship with her partners. The investors, who come from diverse fields, offer their expertise. Kathryna and two other partners are foodies who conduct taste tests and visit the different branches to check consistency in quality. She adds that the location in malls and high-traffic areas help bring in customers. Meanwhile, Alpina Lounge and Wellness, a nail and brow salon cum spa, at Uptown Parade in Taguig City has been thriving. Kathryna is joined by her sister, Stephanie Yu Chua and Russian brow expert Maria Zhukova, as managing partners in this business. Aside from offering minimally invasive services, specialized blood tests and massages, Alpina doubles as a party place at night. Business is flourishing because it uses top quality machines and products executed by professionals who follow international standards in nail art, semi-permanent makeup and aesthetic procedures. Kathryna says her earlier ventures taught her to be resilient. Maturity, location and timing are important to success. DENR: Each Filipino uses 20kg of plastic every year
The numbers that tell about the Filipinos’ use of plastic can no longer be considered rubbish. Because they do end up as such – and by the hundreds of thousands. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources cited a study that says every Filipino uses about 20 kilos of plastic every year. And the country in general disposes of 300,000 tons of plastic waste each year. Considering that plastic is lightweight, imagine how much of it would clog up drainages – causing floods – or end up in the ocean triggering a chain of unfortunate events for the environment. That is why DENR sought the help of local governments to find a solution to the rampant use of plastic that most likely ends up as non-biodegradable garbage. "There is a social dimension to the use of single-use plastics that we need to keep in mind whenever we are saying that we, in fact, want to ban that," said Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga in an interview. She singled out the use of plastic bags in wet markets which almost always end up in the bin. But there was also a concern about the use of sachet products for everyday household needs like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, coffee, and condiments. The Extended Producer Responsibility Act last year tried to address the problem by calling out producers and manufacturers. According to the law, companies must be able to cut plastic disposal by 80 percent through re-usage by 2028. But DENR Undersecretary Jonas Leones said only 672 companies out of 4,000 are able to comply. "So, we need the assistance of the local government," he was quoted as saying.
