‘Too bad, Vladimir’: Hillary Clinton taunts Putin on NATO growth
Former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton on Tuesday taunted her old nemesis, Russian President Vladimir Putin, over the expansion of NATO since his invasion of Ukraine. "Too bad, Vladimir. You brought it on yourself," Clinton said in an aside as she returned to the State Department for the unveiling of her official portrait. "It was such a point of contention. And we always said, people are not forced to join NATO, people choose and want to join NATO," she said. Finland and Sweden sought to join NATO after Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which had unsuccessfully sought to join the Western alliance whose members pledged to defend one another if attacked. Putin has cited Ukraine's flirtation with NATO as a reason for the invasion, which has been met with strong Western support for Kyiv including billions of dollars in weapons. Clinton took office in 2009 as the top diplomat in Barack Obama's administration and quickly sought to "reset" relations with Russia, which had been damaged by Moscow's attack the previous year of another former Soviet republic, Georgia. But relations sharply deteriorated by the end of her tenure as an increasingly authoritarian Putin in 2012 accused her personally of fomenting protests by opposition leaders who rejected the results of parliamentary elections in which his party cruised to victory. Clinton was the Democratic presidential nominee who lost to Donald Trump in 2016. A US Senate panel concluded afterward that Moscow sought to interfere in the election to help Trump win. Clarence Avant, ‘Godfather of Black Music,’ dies at 92
Clarence Avant, the entertainment executive who is counted among the music world's most impactful figures, died over the weekend, a statement from his family said Monday. He was 92 years old. Avant "passed away gently at home" in Los Angeles on Sunday, said his children Nicole and Alex Avant, as well as Nicole's husband, Netflix executive Ted Sarandos. "Through his revolutionary business leadership, Clarence became affectionately known as 'The Black Godfather' in the worlds of music, entertainment, politics, and sports," the statement said. "Clarence leaves behind a loving family and a sea of friends and associates that have changed the world and will continue to change the world for generations to come. The joy of his legacy eases the sorrow of our loss." Avant was born on 25 February 1931 in small-town North Carolina, the oldest of eight. After spending most of his childhood in North Carolina he moved to New Jersey as a teenager, getting his start in the music business as a club manager of Teddy P's Lounge in Newark. He later was mentored by the longtime Louis Armstrong manager Joe Glaser. He went on to become one of the most revered players in music and beyond, an advocate and mentor who pushed the boundaries for Black entertainers in an industry rife with racism. Avant helped establish Venture Records, the first joint effort between a Black-owned music company and a major record label, in this case, MGM. He later launched Sussex Records and signed the likes of Bill Withers. Avant worked at an array of other labels, produced films, and also brokered deals for Black athletes including baseball superstar Hank Aaron. "He's the perennial godfather of our business," Quincy Jones said in 2006, in an interview with Billboard. "Everyone in our business has been by Clarence's desk if they’re smart." 'True pioneer' Avant also consulted at Motown and worked with other top producers including Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis as well as Babyface. He's been credited with burnishing the careers of countless artists, including Jones as well as Pharrell Williams, Snoop Dogg, and Whitney Houston. "Clarence Avant connects us all through his incredible impact since before I was born up until now. He's the godfather to so many of us -- and not just African Americans, most of the industry," Pharrell said in a statement in 2019, ahead of the release of the Netflix documentary "The Black Godfather." In 2021, Avant's wife of over 50 years, Jacqueline, was fatally shot at age 81, during a break-in of the couple's Beverly Hills home. Earlier that year Avant received special accolades from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Recording Academy has also bestowed a number of honors on him and in 2007 he received the Thurgood Marshall Lifetime Achievement Award from the NAACP. Tributes to Avant began pouring out upon news of his death, including from Jay-Z's company Roc Nation, which hailed him "a true pioneer" who "burst through doors and tore down ceilings, changing lives and providing opportunities for generations." "Clarence Avant isn't just the 'Godfather Of Black Music,' he is our cultural Godfather," the company said. Bill and Hillary Clinton, the former US president and secretary of state, said in a joint statement they were "saddened by the passing of our friend." "It was impossible to spend time with him and not come away feeling more positive and wanting to follow his example." Proud Tina: Tributes pour in for Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll
She clawed her way to superstardom from a poor farming town in Nutbush, Tennessee, and fought through an abusive marriage armed only with exceptional talent and a heart that refused to become a victim. Anna Mae Bullock, better known as Tina Turner — the name given her by discoverer and husband-abuser Ike Turner — passed on Wednesday at 83 in Switzerland where she had bought a $76 million waterfront villa. Throughout that remarkable journey, it’s only fair to assume that Turner didn’t really mean it when she questioned what love’s got to do with it. Because love is what’s she’s reaping, even more in death. Celebrities from show business, politics and even sports led the outpouring of affection for the woman who said: “We don’t need another hero,” because, after all, she already found the “hero” in herself. “She is our forever goddess of rock ‘n’ roll who contained a magnitude of inner strength that grew throughout her life. She was a role model not only for me but for the world. She encouraged a part of me I didn’t know existed... She was indeed simply the best,” said Oprah Winfrey on her Instagram. Beyoncé, whose electricity onstage harks to that of Turner during her heyday in the 1980s, offered these words: “My beloved Queen. I love you endlessly. I’m so grateful for your inspiration, and all the ways you have paved the way. You are strength and resilience. You are the epitome of power and passion.” Contemporaries like Dionne Warwick expressed both sadness and awe at Turner’s passing. “Another longtime friend has made her transition,” she wrote. “Not only will I miss that eternal ball of energy named Tina Turner but the entire world will also find this void in their lives. My condolences to her husband and other members of her family. Rest in Peace my friend.” “The words legendary, iconic, diva and superstar are often overused and yet Tina Turner embodies them all and so many more — an incredible performer, musician and trailblazer. To me, she will always be a survivor and an inspiration to women everywhere. Her music will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest in Peace, Queen,” wrote Mariah Carey on Twitter. Angela Bassett, who played Tina Turner in the 1993 film What’s Love Got to Do With It and earned an Oscar nomination for her performance, wrote on Instagram: “How do we say farewell to a woman who owned her pain and trauma and used it as a means to help change the world?... I am honored to have known Tina Turner. I am humbled to have helped show her to the world.“ Turner, whose massive hits included the 1984 number-one hit “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” as well as “Private Dancer,” “The Best” and “Proud Mary” (which she did with Ike), transcended the worlds of music and entertainment. Basketball great Earvin “Magic” Johnson’s tribute read: “Rest in peace to one of my favorite artists of all time, the legendary queen of rock ‘n’ roll Tina Turner. I’ve seen her many many times and hands down, she gave one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. She always gave you your money‘s worth.” Three United States presidents also applauded the legend who will be remembered for her singular voice as well as her cropped jean jackets, mini skirts, stiletto heels and that shock of hair. “In addition to being a once-in-a-generation talent that changed American music forever, Tina’s personal strength was remarkable. Overcoming adversity, and even abuse, she built a career for the ages and a life and legacy that were entirely hers,” wrote President Joe Biden. Former president Bill Clinton wrote: “I love Tina Turner and will never forget meeting her when she came to Little Rock for a concert after releasing the Private Dancer in 1984. We met again on her 67th birthday in St. Petersburg… She still had it — talent, style, energy and authenticity — a priceless gift to music lovers everywhere.” And for former president Barack Obama: “Tina Turner was raw. She was powerful. She was unstoppable. And she was unapologetically herself — speaking and singing her truth through joy and pain; triumph and tragedy. Today we join fans around the world in honoring the Queen of Rock and Roll, and a star whose light will never fade.” The post Proud Tina: Tributes pour in for Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
