Chip maker Intel beats earnings expectations as it pursues rivals
US chip giant Intel on Thursday said it made more money than expected in the recently ended quarter as it continued to invest in a "geographically balanced" supply chain. Intel shares jumped more than 7 percent to $34.88 in after-market trades. "We delivered a standout third quarter, underscored by across-the-board progress on our process and product roadmaps; agreements with new foundry customers, and momentum as we bring AI everywhere," said Intel chief executive Pat Gelsinger. Intel reported revenue of $14.2 billion, which was 8 percent less than the amount seen in the same quarter a year earlier but ahead of forecasts. Net income tallied $300 million, compared with $1 billion profit in the same period in 2022, earnings figures showed. "Our results exceeded expectations," said Intel chief financial officer David Zinsner, who said earnings benefited from "expense discipline." Intel has been working to catch up with rivals, especially Nvidia, when it comes to powerful chips needed to handle the computing demands of artificial intelligence. Intel touted investments being made in chip production facilities with an aim of creating a "geographically balanced, secure, resilient supply chain." California-based Intel is seen as a key tool for the United States to reduce its dependence on major global producers, such as Taiwan's TSMC. Earlier this year, Intel announced it would spend $25 billion on a new plant in Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling it the country's single largest foreign investment. The "agreement in principle" would see the semiconductor firm build the facility in the southern city of Kiryat Gat that would open by 2027 and operate at least until 2035, Israel's finance ministry said. Intel has been operating in Israel since the 1970s with development centers and a production site that employs some 12,000 people, the finance ministry said. In 2017, Intel acquired Israel-based Mobileye, which makes technology for automated driving systems in vehicles, for just over $15 billion. Gelsinger said Intel teams have kept operations going despite the war between Israel and Hamas. "Our utmost priority is the safety and welfare of our people in Israel and their families," Gelsinger said. "Despite all of these challenges, they're performing extremely well. I am praying for a swift return to peace." China Gelsinger said Intel was carefully studying updated rules in the United States that tighten curbs on exports of state-of-the-art AI chips to China. "We do believe that we'll have plenty of opportunity in China," Gelsinger said. "We are continuing to deploy our products there broadly, even as we comply and work with (the United States) around the regulations that they're putting in place." The new rules tighten measures from a year ago that banned the sale to China of microchips crucial to manufacturing powerful AI systems. Calls to further close the supply chain grew after the popularity of generative AI platform ChatGPT. When announcing the beefed-up curbs, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo insisted they were intended to close loopholes and prevent China's development of AI for military use. "It's true that AI has the potential for huge societal benefit. But it also can do tremendous and profound harm if it's in the wrong hands and in the wrong militaries," she told US media. The rules will not affect chips used in consumer goods such as laptops, smartphones, and gaming consoles, though some will be subject to export licensing requirements. China has said it is "strongly dissatisfied" and "firmly opposes" the curbs. "The US continues to generalize the concept of national security, abuse export control measures, and implement unilateral bullying," the commerce ministry said in a statement. Baby Ortiz: Civic leader with a heart of gold
I am taking a break for now and turning over in this issue the privilege of sharing one’s thoughts and experiences to raconteur Jorge Hizon, who takes pleasure in paying tribute to friends and relatives who are celebrating their birthdays. This one’s Jorge’s take on one of the birthday celebrations of civic worker Leonida “Baby” Bayani Ortiz, a most generous and caring lady in our civil society. [caption id="attachment_175595" align="aligncenter" width="659"] GYN GYN Ponce Quiazon[/caption] Here goes Jorge’s remarkable prose: Leonida Bayani Ortiz’s post-birthday party at Borro Restaurant in Quezon City was splendid as it blended culinary delights, entertainment and heartfelt connections. The event showcased a remarkable fusion of Filipino, Mexican and Italian cuisines, leaving guests with a feast for their taste buds. From appetizers to main course, the gastronomic journey was the highlight, enhanced by the presence of a lechon, thanks to Carmen Lim. A diverse selection of desserts, including an array of six birthday cakes, rice cakes, ensaymadas and zesty oranges, gave the guests reason to smile to their hearts’ content. The entertainment lineup added a dynamic dimension to the celebration. Darius Razon, renowned as the jukebox king of the ‘70s, serenaded the audience with his timeless melodies. The queen of comedy, Chuck T. Gueco, hailing from Angeles, Pampanga, brought the house down with her uproarious jokes and charismatic dance moves. Her spontaneous and energetic performance, coupled with Razon’s melodic tunes, created an ambiance of merriment, fun and infectious laughter. [caption id="attachment_175590" align="aligncenter" width="525"] BILLY Tan and Peter Sy.[/caption] Not to be outdone, Ayna Ong and Gyn-gyn Ponce-Quiazon captivated the audience with their distinct vocal talents. They transitioned seamlessly from mellower songs to infectious disco beats which got everyone to stand and dance. This music, ranging from soulful melodies to groovy rhythms, brought an untamable energy to the celebration, encouraging a lively atmosphere of fun and merriment. Undoubtedly, the pinnacle of the evening was the simultaneous blowing of six birthday cakes, made even more special by Razon’s heartfelt rendition of the birthday song. The collective spirit was of jubilant celebration as Baby reveled in the love and warmth shared by her handpicked circle of friends. [gallery size="full" columns="2" ids="175589,175592"] Furthermore, Baby’s thoughtfulness extended to departing guests, who were gifted with cans of chocolates courtesy of Teacher Nelia Sarcol. This gesture was a reflection of gratitude and a lasting memory to cherish. Baby’s birthday celebration was an embodiment of the beauty of authentic friendship, delectable food, captivating entertainment and a joyful atmosphere. Through this harmonious convergence of elements, the event exuded a sense of togetherness, leaving a lasting impression of a truly memorable and heartfelt occasion. PNP: No mass exit of Makati cops from EMBOs
The Philippine National Police will adhere to the letter of the Supreme Court ruling that transferred jurisdiction over the 10 so-called EMBOs, or enlisted men’s barrios, from Makati City to Taguig City. PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said yesterday the transfer will take place under the guidance of the Department of the Interior and Local Government. She emphasized there will be no mass transfer of Taguig City police officers to the community police precincts in the 10 EMBOs as some of the Makati officers assigned to those areas will have to remain to ensure a smooth transition. “The only concern will be on the part of the PNP because those areas that used to be under the Makati police will be turned over to the Taguig police,” Fajardo said in a Laging Handa briefing. “What is being planned is to have a transition, but we will leave a few Makati police personnel to support the Taguig police who will take over,” she added. According to Fajardo, Makati cops are more familiar with the EMBO villages, so they may only be reassigned after their replacements had become acquainted with their beats. She said they were holding meetings with the parties concerned to ensure that the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in the 10 barangays would proceed smoothly and without incident on 30 October. Meanwhile, a day after saying it would comply with a Department of Education order halting its takeover of 14 schools within the EMBOs, the local government of Taguig was back in fighting mode Friday. In a statement, the Taguig local government insisted that it does not need a writ of execution from the Pasig Regional Trial Court to enforce the SC ruling on the transfer of the barangays. The Pasig RTC was the lower court that first heard the territory case. “The SC decision is self-executing. Government agencies have voluntarily complied conformably [sic] to law. Taguig does not need a writ of execution to exercise jurisdiction over the Fort Bonifacio Military Reservation consisting of parcels 3, and 4 of Psu 2031,” its statement read in part. The statement came after Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano said she welcomed Vice President Sara Duterte’s order that placed the 14 schools under the control of the Department of Education. “Taguig, by force of the decision, is legally obliged to immediately exercise jurisdiction over its territory. There cannot be a vacuum in the exercise of jurisdiction over the 10 barangays,” the statement added. The Taguig LGU then appeared to hit Duterte and her order as DepEd secretary when it said, “All agencies must immediately respect, recognize, and for those particularly affected, voluntarily implement final and executory decisions of the Supreme Court without insisting on a writ of execution.” The post PNP: No mass exit of Makati cops from EMBOs appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Acclaimed producer/DJ duo Two Friends and diamond and multi-platinum selling dance music duo Loud Luxury release their latest single, “If Only I”, with award-winning pop singer Bebe Rexha on Helix Records/Armada Music. Two Friends’ massive 30-plus date Planet Two Friends North American headline tour is currently underway, stopping at iconic venues such as Forest Hills Stadium in New York. Electro-pop queen Bebe Rexha’s smooth vocals paired with the carefully-crafted beats of Two Friends and Loud Luxury make for a dance music fan’s dream: a true powerhouse collaboration. The candy-colored music video captures the feel-good essence of the track as the collaborators take on the California coast with special guest influencer Hannah Stocking. In April, Two Friends delighted Coachella fans with the first live performance of “If Only I,” bringing out collaborator Rexha for a special appearance. Loud Luxury also gave it a similar, special pre-release treatment, closing out their set at the EDC Las Vegas mainstage with a fireworks-filled high tempo rendition. The new single follows Two Friends’ recent collaboration with multi-platinum country singer Russell Dickerson in “More Than Yesterday.” Slowly beginning with Dickerson’s rich vocals over acoustic plucking, the song steadily progresses, building instrumental and electronic beats and culminating in a powerful, danceable chorus featuring drums, synths and a catchy trumpet hook.
