Paul Reubens aka Pee-wee Herman dies of cancer at 70
Actor and comedian Paul Reubens, known for his portrayal of children’s TV star Pee-wee Herman, lost his life to cancer on 30 July at the age of 70. According to a statement posted on his Facebook account, Reubens “bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit.” “A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit,” it added. The statement included a personal apology from Reubens on why he had kept his cancer diagnosis private. “Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans, and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you,” he said. Reubens started his career in 1970 as part of the Los Angeles live comedy troupe Groundlings. He launched The Pee-wee Herman Show in 1980. The beloved children’s character was known for his white chunky loafers, red bow tie and the catchphrase “I know you are but what am I.” In 1991, Reubens was arrested for indecent exposure at an adult movie theater in Sarasota, Florida, a controversy that dealt a major blow to his career. He reprised the iconic children’s role on Broadway in 2010. Variety reports that before his death, Reubens was working on two Pee-wee Herman projects, the black comedy The Pee-wee Herman Story and the family adventure film Pee-wee’s Playhouse: The Movie. Senate: Biazon was an outstanding public servant and the ‘epitome of humility’
Senate members and employees held a necrological service for former senator and military chief, Rodolfo “Pong” Biazon, on Monday morning. In his eulogy, former Senate President Vicente Sotto III remembered Baizon’s humble beginnings that made him become a “fearless legislator and well-decorated military official attributable to his hard work, perseverance, and fighting for what is right.” “Adversities did not hinder him from climbing both political and military—as a leader, so to speak,” Sotto said. Sotto also feted Biazon for advancing his advocacies for low-cost housing and benefits for soldiers while making sure that all sectors of society will benefit from the bills he crafted. “He is a truly dynamic and multi-faceted individual, a family man and excellent soldier, an extraordinary legislator, freedom fighter and defender of democracy who relished his life to the fullest, and above all his accomplishments, he will be most remembered as a good father, a loving husband, and a dear friend,” Sotto said. Former Senator Jose Lina Jr. described Biazon as an excellent and outstanding Filipino, a warrior and a statesman as well as a devoted public servant “whose integrity and compassion to the people are indeed worth emulating.” “All throughout his life, in the service of the Filipino people, Pong was an epitome of humility, simplicity, and decorum,” said Lina, adding that Biazon has the “compassion, understanding and pleasing traits of an exemplary public servant to be able to connect more effectively to the people.” Former Senator Gregorio Honasan II paid his last respects to Biazon, remembering Biazon’s unwavering dedication to public service. “Manong Pong walks the talk and showed by living example that an ordinary imperfect man—together, I underscored the word together— dream, pray, worked hard, and sacrificed to build a strong sovereign nation for the next generation. They all become heroes,” Honasan said. Also, former Senate President Franklin Drilon bid farewell to his departed ex-colleague and a good friend in the Upper Chamber. Drilon honors Biazon’s career as an inspiration, saying: “No one can question his capability and his dedication to public service and loyalty to the country.” “He was fearless and undoubted even in the face of death,” Drilon said. “Every little thing that could erode his beloved Philippines was worth his time to be able to bring on the floor of the Senate.” During the necrological service, several incumbent senators likewise delivered their eulogy for Biazon, followed by a public viewing of Biazon's remains in the Senate until 1 p.m. Biazon, a native of Batac, Ilocos Norte, entered the Philippine Military Academy as a cadet at 21, serving the military for three and a half decades. He then became the 21st AFP chief who served from 24 to 12 April 1991—the first and only from the ranks of the Philippine Marines. Prior to this, Biazon also served as the AFP Vice Chief of Staff, Commanding General of AFP-NCR Defense Command and Commandant of the Philippine Marine Corps. Biazon is the first PMA alumnus to be elected as a senator and served in the 9th Congress from 1992 up to 1995 and from 1998 until 2010—where he was recognized as an exemplary defender of Philippine democracy and the people’s freedom. From Pasay City, Biazon’s remains will be transferred to the Philippine Marines headquarters in Taguig City later in the afternoon, for the final salute and execution of full military honors to Biazon. Biazon died age of 88 on 12 June 2023 after battling pneumonia. His family earlier confirmed that Biazon was diagnosed with lung cancer in July last year. The Senate issued a resolution honoring Biazon's legacies as well as expressing sincere sympathy and condolences for the passing of the veteran legislator. PBBM hails, mourns ex-Sen. Rodolfo Biazon
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., on Tuesday expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family of former Senator Rodolfo "Pong" Biazon, who died on Monday at the age of 88. "We mourn the loss of a distinguished public servant, a former Armed Forces chief and legislator who dedicated his life to serving the country and the Filipino people," Marcos said in a tweet. "The thoughts and prayers of a grateful nation are with his family as we remember his remarkable service to the nation," he added. The President also acknowledged the tremendous contributions Senator Biazon made to the country and expressed gratitude for his remarkable service. "He was highly respected by his colleagues and by the public for being opinionated, conscientious and virtuous as he fought for his mission and advocacies," Marcos said. Biazon, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in July 2022, suffered pneumonia this year that led to the further weakening of his lungs, his son Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon shared. “The family is grateful that we were able to spend his last moments with us intimately and peacefully,” the mayor added. In a post on Sunday, the younger Biazon said the former lawmaker was confined at a hospital for serious pneumonia. Biazon is survived by his wife Monserrat Narag Bunoan and children Ruffy, Richie and Rino. Hailing from Batac in Ilocos Norte, Biazon served as a member of the House of Representatives from 2010 to 2016. He also made history as the first military general from the Philippine Marine Corps of the Philippine Navy to become the Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. In 1957, Biazon decided to enroll in the Philippine Military Academy, where he graduated as the "class goat" -- the cadet who finishes last -- of the PMA Class of 1961. However, this did not deter him from achieving excellence. He went on to hold significant positions such as the Superintendent of PMA from 1986 to 1987, Commandant of the Philippine Marines from 1987 to 1989, Commanding General of the NCR Defense Command from 1988 to 1990, Vice Chief of Staff of the AFP from 1990 to 1991, and finally, Chief of the AFP in 1991. He served as a senator in the Ninth Congress from 1992 to 1995 and was reelected as a senator from 1998 to 2004. During his tenure, Biazon held important positions as Chairman of the Senate Committees on National Defense and Security, as well as Urban Planning, Housing, and Resettlement. As a senator, Biazon made significant legislative contributions, authoring several laws, including the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003 (Republic Act 9208), the Rental Reform Act of 2002 (RA 9161), the Comprehensive and Integrated Shelter Finance Act (RA 7835) and the Modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (RA 7898). Rodolfo Biazon dies at 88
The family of Rodolfo Gaspar Biazon announced his passing today. He was 88 years old. “It is perfectly fitting that today, Independence Day, at around 8:30 am, the soldier who dedicated his life and laid it on the line in defending freedom and democracy, has been set free from the pains of this world,” the family wrote in a statement released on social media. “He courageously fought his last battle like a Marine would, but it is the Lord’s will which prevails. Born on 14 April 1935, Biazon was named Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in 1991. He was elected senator in 1992 with a 3-year term, and then again from 1998-2010. He became a member of the House of Representatives representing Muntinlupa from 2010-2016. In the same statement, it was disclosed that Biazon had been diagnosed with lung cancer in July 2022. He then had two bouts with pneumonia this year, the second one being more serious, which further compromised his already weakened lungs. For those wanting to pay respects, there will be further announcements from the family. The post Rodolfo Biazon dies at 88 appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
British writer Martin Amis dies aged 73
Renowned and influential British writer Martin Amis has died aged 73 at his home in Lake Worth, Florida, the Booker Prizes said Saturday. Amis was "one of the most acclaimed and discussed writers of the past 50 years and the author of 14 novels," said the website of Booker Prizes, the leading literary awards for fiction in the United Kingdom. His wife, Isabel Fonseca, told media that the author of searing and insightful works such as "Money: A Suicide Note," "London Fields" and "Time's Arrow" died on Friday after a bout with esophageal cancer. His death was announced on the same day as the Cannes Festival showing of a film based on his 2014 book "The Zone of Interest". Set in Auschwitz, the novel tells the story of a Nazi officer who fell in love with the wife of the extermination camp commander. Amis, the son of renowned comic novelist Kingsley Amis, equaled and even surpassed his father in fame with novels filled with savage humor. "The novel is an incredibly intimate portrait of a writer," the younger Amis once told the BBC, reflecting on his career. "Although I don't write an autobiography, I am everywhere in my books." In 2008, the Times of London named him one of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945. Born in 1949 in Wales, Amis rose to literary celebrity amid the hip 1980s British fiction boom that included fellow novelists Salman Rushdie, Julian Barnes, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Ian McEwan. Amis graduated from Oxford University in 1971 with a degree in English and worked as an editor before publishing his first novel, "The Rachel Papers," in 1973. It was with "Money," published in 1984 with a comic take on consumerism, that Amis burst more broadly onto the literary scene. In addition to his novels, Amis published two collections of stories and eight works of nonfiction. His book on the September 11, 2001 attacks, titled "The Second Plane," includes articles, short stories, and essays. In recent decades, Amis became a public intellectual, frequently appearing on television, sometimes alongside his long-time friend Christopher Hitchens, a British-American writer and renowned atheist who died in 2011. He was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1991 and long-listed in 2003, the website noted. The 1990s marked the peak of his literary career, even though he was accused of misogyny and, later, Islamophobia -- accusations he firmly rejected. Publisher Vintage Books said it was "devastated" by the death of Amis. "He leaves a towering legacy and an indelible mark on the British cultural landscape, and will be missed enormously," Vintage said on its Twitter account.
