Buying, selling of votes rampant in villages

Undeterred by the penalty under the Omnibus Election Code, candidates in Monday's barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections bought votes across the country, according to reports gathered by the Inquirer. Bills amounting to P50, P150, P200, P300, P500, P1,000, P3,000 and P5,000 --- often contained in envelopes with sample ballots --- changed hands. Cops hunt inmate who escaped from Occidental Mindoro town jail

CITY OF CALAPAN - Police on Monday are pursuing a detainee who escaped from Magsaysay town jail in Occidental Mindoro province Sunday morning. A Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) police spot report said escaped detainee Jay Ar Magno, 22, was charged with frustrated murder and was arrested on June 6. Magno, a farmer residing in Sitio (sub-village) Gamot in Barangay (village) San Nicolas in Magsaysay, used falsified keys to escape from the municipal jail around 8 a.m. Sunday, said Senior Insp. Rodrigo Borlado, chief of Magsaysay police. He also has a robbery record with the police, Borlado said. Suspect killed, 3 others arrested in separate drug busts in Mindanao

PAGADIAN CITY -- A drug suspect was killed for reportedly putting up a violent resistance while three others were arrested in separate anti-drug operations in Western Mindanao over the weekend, authorities said Sunday. The slain suspect was identified as Amet Puengan, 49, who alleged resisted arrest during a buy-bust operation in Malangas, Zamboanga Sibugay on Saturday.
