Meralco stops streaking Alaska, gains share of 2nd spot

Meralco continued its upward trajectory and shot down Alaska, 89-74, to force a tie in second place in the 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup Sunday at Smart Araneta Coliseum. Brushing off the tight 41-40 first half, the Bolts went into the offensive and outscored the Aces, 32-17, in the third quarter to build a 73-57 buffer heading into the fourth. Nat’l squad looking to play in both commercial leagues

Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. looks to enter the national women’s volleyball team as a guest squad in the country’s two commercial leagues as part of its preparation for three major international tournaments. The volleyball association announced Sunday that the yet to be assembled national team will play in the 2018 PSL Invitational set to begin on June 23. LVPI vice president Peter Cayco said that the Nationals, skippered by F2 Logistics star Aby Marano, will participate in the conference as a ‘guest team’.      “Ako ang lumapit sa PSL if pwede nila ma-accommodate ang national team, isali nila sa Invitational Conference parang guest team,” said Cayco. “Pumayag naman sila sa set up na guest team kami (national team) and hindi kasama sa win-loss records ng teams. Parang tune up lang nila kami, no bearing.” Cayco added that he is also looking to talk to the PVL to accommodate the national team in its next conference. The official cited that it was practical to enter the squad in the PSL as the PVL is already in their playoff stage.  “Sa PVL naman, hindi ko na inilapit sa kanila kasi ayaw ko makagulo kasi quarters na sila and going to semis na,” he said. “Nasa importanteng stage na sila ng liga nila so ayaw ko naman makagulo.” “Sa next conference nila, sa kanila naman ako makikiusap na kung pwede, same setup, ma-accommodate rin nila ang national team,” Cayco added. Head coach Shaq Delos Santos is expected to announce the names of the players that will be included in the projected 20-woman pool early this week. From the pool, Delos Santos will pick the 14 players that will compose the final lineup set to participate in the Jakarta Palembang Asian Games in August, the AVC Asia Cup in Thailand in September and in the 2019 Manila Southeast Asian Games. Cayco cleared that the national team players will have an option to play in their respective mother clubs.   “If magkasabay or maging magkalaban ‘yung club team and national team, the player will play sa club team niya because we have 20 players in the pool so OK lang if sa club team maglaro ‘yung player,” he said. “For example, si Aby, if national team versus F2 Logistics, doon siya sa F2.” As for the PVL players who will be included in the national team, Cayco will try to talk to the league to allow them to play. “Now ‘yung PVL players we will ask the PVL, the team owners, sa mother teams nila kung pwede maglaro yung mga players for the national team sa PSL,” said Cayco. “Para sa national team sila maglalaro and not for the PSL.” Creamline’s Alyssa Valdez, Jia Morado and Mel Gohing and Pocari Sweat-Air Force’s Myla Pablo are the PVL players invited by the LVPI to join the national team hopefuls.   ---      Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

WATCH: Kevin Durant s Finals Game 3 clutch shots

The sequel was just as impactful as the first. Once again, Kevin Durant left his mark on The Land in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, this time hitting a dagger far behind the three-point arc, to essentially clinch the Warriors' win. Many people, including many NBA players, felt a sense of deja vu in the heat of the moment, so let's see just how similar and different the two big baskets were: 2017 Finals A year ago, the Cavaliers also trailed 0-2 after dropping both games in Golden State, but looked to be in good position at home, going up by as much as seven points, 102-95, with 8:53 left in the game. JR Smith hit a big three-pointer that kept Cleveland up six, 113-107, but after that, the tandem of Curry and Durant began to find a groove. A runner by Curry got things going, then after a timeout, Durant canned a 13-foot pull-up jumper to get Golden State within two. The Cavs burned their last timeout with 1:15 to go, but Kyle Korver missed a three. Durant himself snagged the rebound, then ran down the court unhindered. He stopped just short of the three-point arc, drawing LeBron James' defense, but KD effortlessly pulled up in transition, and splashed home the triple. Durant's shot gave the Warriors the lead for good, 114-113. Both James and Kyrie Irving failed to connect on three-pointers of their own following the conversion, and Durant and Curry were able to ice this at the line, for a final score of 118-113. KD would finish with 31 points on 10-of-18 shooting, 4-of-7 from downtown, and 7-of-8 at the stripe, in addition to nine rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a block. 2018 Finals The 2018 Finals were different in the sense that Durant was carrying the offensive load for the Warriors in this game. A year ago in Game 3, Curry was good for 26 points, while Klay Thompson logged 30. This time around, Durant would finish with 43, while no other Golden State player had more than 11. Another wrinkle from today's game was that the Warriors had already wrestled control of the game. After being down by as much as 13 points, the fourth period saw eight lead changes and five deadlocks. Golden State was up four, 101-97 with 2:38 to play, following a Curry layup, and his first three-pointer of the game, but James answered with a three-pointer of his own. Durant responded by finding Andre Iguodala for a big slam, then after Tristan Thompson missed a nine-foot turnaround, Durant once again brought the ball down. Unlike last time though, when KD attacked in transition, the Warriors were looking to burn time. Durant only began to get things going when there were five seconds left on the shot clock, accepting an Andre Iguodala screen to get JR Smith switched onto him. Smith had no chance to block Durant's attempt, and his conversion made it 106-100, 49.8 seconds left. Off a timeout, James was able to score on a layup, but a Green dunk, and two Curry charities put this one away. Durant finished with a game-best 43 points on 15-of-23 shooting, 6-of-9 three-pointers, and 7-of-7 free throws. He also made it a double-double with 13 rebounds, plus seven assists and a steal. The 43 points were also a postseason-high. So, which one was better? 2017 was probably a more pressure-packed moment, and it was over LeBron James, making the moment more iconic. 2018 though was cooler, because he had done it before and because it was further back. The official records clock this shot as a 33-footer, seven feet back of his 26-foot make in 2017. Perhaps the thing to consider will be what happens next. In 2017 the Warriors were unable to make it four-four-four-four, suffering their first postseason loss that year, 137-116 in Game 4 (though of course, they'd win it in five on their homecourt). If they win it in four this time, that ultimately could make Durant's Game 3 connection more vital. PVL: Adamson, Ateneo, DLSU squads hold unexpected reunions in Tuguegarao

The Philippine volleyball community really is just one tight-knit family.  If you need any proof of that claim, just witness the unplanned, yet awesome impromptu reunion that took place after the Premier Volleyball League On Tour in Tuguegarao during the Mother’s Day weekend. After finishing the two-day slugfest away from Manila (in one of the hottest places in the country, right smack in the middle of summer, no less) the volleybelles found a piece of home in each other. Out of the four teams who travelled to the capital of Cagayan, there were three groups that were able to represent their UAAP squads, while having time to catch up before they head back to the city. The Adamson Lady Falcons were well-represented by San Marcelino legends Amanda Villanueva, Lizlee Ann Gata-Pantone, and Pau Soriano, as well as fresh grads Jema Galanza, Fhen Emnas, Joy Dacoron, and Jellie Tempiatura. Records set, lessons learned as Palarong Pambansa 2018 ends

ILOCOS SUR -- Palarong Pambansa once again showcased the most promising Filipino youth sports talent, as it draws to a close after seven days at the Quirino Stadium in Bantay, Ilocos Sur last April 21. The 61st installment of the country's flagship sports program saw student-athletes break several records, and the event itself became an avenue for broader discussions on youth development and child protection. At the closing ceremony, Department of Education Undersecretary and Palarong Pambansa Secretary-General Tonisito Umali encouraged the youth to translate their on-court success to other facets of their lives. “Aking hinihikayat kayong lahat, samahan ninyo ang ating Ma’am Liling Briones at ang buong Kagawaran sa ating paglalakbay upang makabuo ng isang Filipino na kampeon, na hindi lamang kampeon sa palakasan kung hindi kampeon sa tunay na buhay," Umali said. After a week of intense competition, Ilocos Sur Governor Ryan Singson made sure to remind the young athletes to look beyond the results. “We have successfully completed the journey, and now we end it by celebrating victories and learned lessons of defeat. Remember, young athletes, that in winning or losing, there are always lessons one can get and these are far more important than any other awards,” the governor said during his opening message following the parade of delegates.   THREE TYPES OF EDUCATION Makati representative and former taekwondo champion “Monsour” Del Rosario recalled his earlier experiences and stressed the importance of sports' role in developing a sound athlete and a model citizen. “Kayo po ang future ng Philippine sports. Nakikita ko po ang sarili ko sa inyo noon – isang atleta, a faceless person in a crowd of 15,000 athletes. Itong sporting event na ito ay napakahalaga sa ating mga kabataan,” the congressman shared. He also continued by sharing his belief in three types of education: “Number one na education ay nanggagaling sa ating pamilya, sa ating parents at mga kapatid. Ang pangalawang education ay sa paaralan,nag-aaral tayo to become knowledgeable about many things in life. Ang third education ay ang sports education, ito minsan ay nakalilimutan ng ibang sector pero mahalaga din ito sa mga kabataan, dahil dito nade-develop ang character natin," he said. "Ang buhay natin ay parang sports din, sometimes we lose, sometimes we win, but if you have experienced competing in sports, you will know how to handle challenges in life." The National Capital Region (NCR) once again lorded over the weeklong sporting event, leading the medal tally by a huge margin, with Region IV-A (CALABARZON) and Region VI (Western Visayas) finishing second and third, respectively. The top winners received cash prize and trophy, and for the first time in the history of Palaro, winners in all the 21 regular sporting events were awarded with prizes by this year’s sponsors. the number of records set this year reached 40 (five in archery, 16 in athletics, and 19 in swimming), the most in Palarong Pambansa history. Aside from a gold medal and cash incentive, each of the record breakers received additional P3,000. “Aside from the additional incentive, these outstanding athletes will be seeded or given priority to represent the country in the 10th ASEAN School Games that will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,” Umali added.   CHAMPIONING THE SPIRIT, WELFARE OF FILIPINO ATHLETES Following an incident involving a DepEd personnel from Cebu City who was nabbed for alleged sexual assault on a 14-year-old student-athlete during the national meet, Umali announced the formation of a Child Protection Committee next year. “In the next Palaro in Davao, we will now have a Child Protection Committee to make sure that this sort of occurrence will never happen again. We will also conduct talks with officiating officials and coaches on how to avoid similar instances in the future,” Umali directed......»»
