Harden scores 48 points, Rockets beat Lakers 138-134 in OT

By KRISTIE RIEKEN,  AP Sports Writer HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden scored 48 points, Eric Gordon added 30 and the Houston Rockets overcame a 21-point deficit to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 138-134 in overtime Saturday night (Sunday, PHL time). The Rockets trailed for most of the night and were down by 18 in the second-half. Gordon sent it to overtime with a 3-pointer, and made four free throws in the last seconds of the extra period. Coming off 57- and 58-point games, Harden had his 19th straight game with at least 30 and he's had 40 in 10 of the last 13. He was 14 of 30 from the field, going 8 of 19 3-pointers, and hit 12 of 15 free throws. Brandon Ingram missed a 3 for Los Angeles before Harden hit 1 of 2 free throws to make it 132-130 with less than a minute left. Ingram tied it with a basket, and Harden again made 1 of 2 free throws to make it 133-132. Los Angeles missed a 3 before Gordon also made just 1 of 2 free throws to leave Houston up by two with 12.6 seconds left. Kyle Kuzma lost the ball and it went out of bounds to give Houston the ball back. Gordon added four free throws after that to secure the victory. It was the second straight overtime game for both teams after Houston lost to Brooklyn on Wednesday night and Los Angeles beat Oklahoma City on Thursday night. Kuzma had 32 points for Los Angeles and Ingram added 21 in a game where coach Luke Walton was ejected in the third quarter. Already without LeBron James and Rajon Rondo, the Lakers have another injury concern after Lonzo Ball sprained his left ankle in the third quarter. The team said he was taken to a hospital for X-rays because the machine at the arena was broken. Four straight points by the Lakers stretched the lead to nine in the fourth quarter, but Harden and Gordon made consecutive 3-pointers cut it to 112-109 with about two minutes remaining. Los Angeles made four free throws to make it 116-109 about a minute later, but Harden made two 3-pointers around a basket by Ivica Zubac to get Houston within three with about 30 seconds left. Lance Stephenson missed a 3-pointer and Harden made two free throws to cut the lead to 118-117 with 5.7 seconds left. Zubac made two more free throws before Gordon's off-balance 3-pointer with 2 seconds left sent it to OT. The Lakers built a huge lead early and were up 64-46 at halftime, with Kuzma scoring 24 points. They were ahead by 17 with about eight minutes left in the third quarter after scoring five straight points capped by a basket from Kuzma before Houston scored the next 15 points to cut it to 74-72 three minutes later. James Ennis had five points in that stretch and P.J. Tucker capped it with a 3-pointer. Ball was injured just before Houston's run began. He remained on the court for a couple of minutes talking with trainer's before he was helped to his feet where he hopped on his right foot for a few steps before being carried off the court and to the locker room by Stephenson and Michael Beasley. Walton was ejected a couple of minutes after that when he got two technical fouls after yelling at officials during a timeout. TIP-INS Lakers: James was out for the 13th straight game with a strained left groin and did not make the trip. ... Stephenson finished with 16 points. Rockets: Harden also had eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. ... Ennis returned after missing Wednesday's game after cutting his left leg in a fall at his house. ... Chris Paul missed his 14th game in a row with a strained left hamstring ... Clint Capela had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb and is expected to be out 4-6 weeks. Nets survive Rockets in OT despite 58 from Harden

By Kristie Rieken, Associated Press HOUSTON (AP) — Spencer Dinwiddie scored 25 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter and overtime and the Brooklyn Nets spoiled James Harden's 58-point night with a 145-142 victory over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time). Harden had his second straight season high after scoring 57 in a victory over Memphis on Monday night (Tuesday, PHL time), but was only 5-of-19 from three-point range. The Rockets shot an NBA-record 70 triples, making just 23. Harden has scored at least 30 points in 18 straight games and has reached 40 in nine of the last 12. He was 16 of 34 overall from the field, made 21-of-23 free throws and had 10 rebounds and six assists. Dinwiddie forced overtime, making three three-pointers in the last 30 seconds of regulation. In the extra period, he hit the go-ahead basket with 28 seconds left. After Harden made three free throws to give the Rockets a one-point lead, James Nunnally — who signed a 10-day contract Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time) — hit a three-pointer to make it 142-135 with 1:28 left. Treveon Graham made a triple for Brooklyn and Jarrett Allen made a basket but missed a free throw to cut the lead to 142-140. But the Nets grabbed a rebound and Dinwiddie, who had seven points in OT, made a three-point play to put Brooklyn up 143-142. Austin Rivers missed a three for Houston, and Joe Harris made two free throws to make it 145-142 with 1.6 seconds left. Houston had a chance to tie it at the buzzer, but Gerald Green's shot clanged off the rim. The Rockets broke their own record for three-point attempts after shooting 61 against New Orleans on Dec. 16, 2016. Houston also holds the record for most three-pointers made after hitting 26 in a win over Washington this season. Green, who did not attempt a two-point basket, made 5-of-15. The Rockets were up by 11 with about 2.5 minutes left when Brooklyn used a 9-3 run to get to 127-122 with about 30 seconds left. P.J. Tucker made two free throws after that, and Dinwiddie made a triple for Brooklyn with 26.2 seconds remaining to cut it to 128-125. Harden made one of two free throws, and Dinwiddie struck again with another three about five seconds later to get Brooklyn within one. Tucker missed two free throws, but Harden grabbed a rebound with 12.7 seconds left. He made both free throws, and Dinwiddie made a third straight three-pointer to tie it up with 8.4 seconds left. Harden had a chance to win it in regulation, but his three-point attempt bounced off the rim. TIP-INS Nets: Jared Dudley missed his third straight game with a strained left hamstring. ... Short but sweet search lands Fisher as coach of LA Sparks

By Beth Harris, Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — It was a “short but sweet” search to find the new coach of the Los Angeles Sparks. Turns out he has been sitting in the courtside seats for years. Derek Fisher was introduced Friday as coach of the team that he watched play at Staples Center while helping the Lakers win five NBA championships as their point guard. It’s Fisher’s second stint as a head coach in the pro ranks. He was fired from the New York Knicks in 2016. “This opportunity is not a step down, sideways, backwards, somehow different than the men’s game,” Fisher told a room full of media at a downtown hotel, insisting the WNBA isn’t a steppingstone. “There isn’t a future outside of what we’re here to talk about today.” Executive vice president and general manager Penny Toler didn’t look far in finding a replacement for Brian Agler, who resigned last week. “Our coach’s search was short but sweet,” she said. “The first person who came to mind was Derek Fisher. Derek has been a huge supporter of the Sparks, but even more importantly, he’s been a huge supporter of the WNBA from day one. He would leave his practice and fly and watch us play.” Toler said that during her 20 years as GM she would discuss the team with Fisher and seek his advice and suggestions. “He’s invested,” she said. Fisher becomes the 12th coach in franchise history. He takes over a team that went 19-15 in the regular season this year before losing in the second round of the playoffs. Agler resigned without explanation after four years that included winning the WNBA championship in 2016. He had an 85-51 career mark with the Sparks. “I don’t know why he wanted to. I didn’t ask,” Toler said. “When someone wants to resign, it’s not my job to talk them out of it.” Former league MVP Candace Parker was on hand to welcome Fisher. She waved her right hand in the air, showing off her WNBA championship ring that made a clunking noise when her hand hit the table. “I want more,” she said. Besides Parker, the Sparks have another former league MVP in Nneka Ogwumike and hope to re-sign guard Chelsea Gray. “We have chemistry,” Parker said. Parker noted she first met Fisher when she was 8 or 9 and her older brother’s agent was based in Arkansas, where Fisher is from. Fisher was fired in New York after going 40-96 in 1 ½ seasons while working under then-Knicks executive Phil Jackson, who coached him on the Lakers. Fisher said it took a while for him to come to terms with the fact that he was “overly fixated with what other people thought about my experience in New York as opposed to what I felt about my experience in New York.” Fisher peppered Toler with what she said were “about 2,000 questions” before agreeing to take the Sparks job. He indicated the homework was necessary after his time with the Knicks. “What I learned is, if there is not clarity in purpose, vision and mission from ownership to management to coaches to players to staff, it doesn’t work,” he said. “Some of the basketball things are irrelevant if ownership, management, staff, players, if we are not aligned in the way we see going about our jobs and achieving our purpose and our mission.” Since leaving New York, Fisher has worked as a TV analyst. He said he explored jobs with college and men’s pro teams but the timing wasn’t right. He also experienced upheaval in his personal life. In June 2015, he and former teammate Matt Barnes got into an altercation at the home of Gloria Govan, Barnes’ ex-wife who is now Fisher’s fiancée. In June 2017, Fisher was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after his vehicle flipped on a Los Angeles freeway. He and Govan weren’t injured. Govan and two of Fisher’s children from his first marriage were on hand Friday. “The book is not finished yet,” Fisher said. “I feel like this is an opportunity for me to continue writing my coaching book and I’m excited to do it here in LA with the Sparks.”  .....»»

UAAP Finals: UP apologizes for school official s controversial post towards Ateneo players

The University of the Philippines has categorically distanced itself from controversial statements posted on social media by one of its school officials. “We dissociate ourselves as a Board from Regent [Spocky] Farolan’s statements and actions,” the UP Board of Regents (BOR), the school’s highest decision-making body, said in a statement released on Monday. It then continued, “Whatever his motives may have been, there is no excuse sowing fear and confusion especially at a time when (UP’s) attention should have been focused on the rising successes of its athletic program. We view with extreme disapproval and condemn violence in any form.” Last Sunday, Farolan posted on his Facebook account a cryptic message that seemed to hint at forthcoming injuries to Ateneo players. “Sayang hindi kumpleto ang players ng Ateneo sa Wednesday. Tatlo injured. Pili na kayo kung sinu-sino mga yon,” he said, adding three devil emojis at the end of it. The post was made a day after the Blue Eagles topped the Fighting Maroons to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three Finals in UAAP Season 81. The post went viral not long after and Farolan came under fire for his cryptic message. He ultimately deleted the post before saying “there was sarcasm in that comment which may not have been immediately and easily perceived by some.” Now, the UP BOR has bared that Farolan has apologized for his post during their board meeting. “The BOR takes note of the apology of Farolan regarding his post that appeared to advocate the use of violence against members of the men’s basketball team of Ateneo,” its statement said. Nonetheless, the UP BOR made it a point to extend apologies to its neighboring school. “We apologize to the officials, staff, and athletes of Ateneo for any anxiety Regent Farolan’s statements may have caused. We also deeply regret the dampening of the euphoria of UP reaching the UAAP Finals,” it said. The BOR also made it a point to state that it is against Farolan’s re-appointment to the board. “Committed to a higher standard of accountability for its members, the BOR withdraws recommendation for the re-appointment of Regent Farolan,” its statement said. The BOR is made up of 11 regents – the head of the Commission on Higher Education; the president of UP; the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Education, Arts, and Culture; the chairperson of the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education; the president of the UP Alumni Association; one Faculty Regent; one Staff Regent; one Student Regent; and three presidential appointees. Farolan is a presidential appointee. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
