Australian Open quotes: Rafael Nadal says no plans to retire

DENNIS PASSA, AP Sports Writer br /> MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Rafael Nadal isn't planning to give up tennis anytime soon. Johanna Konta won't take too seriously her dominating win in the Sydney International last Friday. And Sam Stosur, who has never done well at her home Grand Slam tournament, isn't getting too down on herself after her preparation — or lack of it— for Melbourne Park. Following are some thoughts and impressions from players who spoke on Sunday, the day before the start of the Australian Open: ___ RAFAEL NADAL The takeaway: Rafa is not about to call it quits anytime soon. Nadal, a 14-time major winner, is coming off two lengthy injury layoffs last year, including 2 ½ months off after pulling out of the French Open before the third round with left wrist injury and another rest at the end of the season. Just don't ask him if he's ready to pull out a rod and reel, or a 9-iron. 'If I don't believe that I can be competitive, and when I mean competitive, is fighting for the things that I fought for during the last 10 years, I will be probably playing golf or fishing at home,' Nadal said. 'I am being honest ... I am here because I believe ... I can fight for the things that really motivate me.' Given his history with injuries, Nadal was asked if he was playing pain free. 'What do you mean 'pain-free'?' he said. 'I am not injured, no. Pain-free is a long time ago.' ___ JOHANNA KONTA The Sydney-born British player, a surprise semifinalist at Melbourne Park last year, won the Sydney International final against Agnieszka Radwanska last Friday, a victory so dominating that the Polish player, ranked third in the world, said: 'I can't remember playing someone like this on that level, that consistent for the whole match. I couldn't really say that I did something wrong. She was just playing amazing tennis.' Konta said Sunday she's not reading too much into those plaudits. 'Obviously to have beaten a player like Aga, I'm definitely very pleased with the level I played,' Konta said. 'But we all know that it's not a given. It doesn't decide how you will do in the next event. I'm taking it as a positive from the week itself, but I'm looking to, again, work hard here and really try to do the best that I can here.' ___ SAMANTHA STOSUR Competing in her 15th Australian Open, the highest-ranked Australian woman in the draw has never made it past the fourth round at Melbourne Park. Her preparation for her home major wasn't helped with first-round losses at Brisbane and Sydney 'I can't change it, it is what it is,' Stosur said of her early exits. 'I'm not going into my first round freaking out that I haven't had more than two matches. Like I said, I've done everything else that I can. Obviously it would have been really nice to have played more. But I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person in that situation from the first two weeks of the year.' The 18th-seeded Stosur has a tough first-round match against Heather Watson of Britain. ___ SIMONA HALEP The fourth-seeded Halep lost in the first round last year at Melbourne Park. This year she'll have the distinction of opening play on the main Rod Laver Arena on Monday, against American Shelby Rogers. 'I hope is going to be better this year ... it's special to open the tournament on the biggest stadium. I'm not thinking very much at that thing. I just have to go there. I know the opponent pretty well.' Halep beat Rogers in straight sets in the third round at the 2015 U.S. Open in their only previous meeting. ___ TOMMY HAAS The 38-year-old German veteran has said 2017 will be his last year on tour — he's taking over as tournament director at Indian Wells. Haas, who plays Benoit Paire of France in the first round, wants to go out with some dignity after a career of injuries. He has been ranked as high as No. 2, won 15 ATP Tour titles, reached the semifinals of the Australian Open three times and Wimbledon once, and won a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. His career has been stalled by injuries since he had shoulder surgery two years ago and right foot surgery in the middle of last year. 'I think it's important to find that right time, or that moment for you when you feel it's over and it's time to do something else,' Haas said Sunday. 'For me it's very important just to be back on tour and back here at the Australian Open. It's been a while since I've played here and I'm excited to get the opportunity to go out on the court one more time and compete.' And to keep playing, hoping that his best is once again around the corner. 'When you are a dreamer, and a lot of us are, you obviously like to play at your best level again, maybe play against some of the top players somewhere on a big stage and play a great matches,' Haas said. 'Maybe get far in a tournament one more time.' .....»»

105-year-old Frenchman sets cycling record

SAMUEL PETREQUIN, AP Sports Writer   SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France (AP) — Nearly a century ago, Robert Marchand was told by a coach that he should give up cycling because he would never achieve anything on a bike. He proved that prediction wrong again on Wednesday. In a skin-tight yellow and violet jersey, the 105-year-old Frenchman set a world record in the 105-plus age category -- created especially for the tireless veteran -- by riding 22.547 kilometers (14.010 miles) in one hour. 'I'm now waiting for a rival,' he said. Marchand had ridden faster in the past on the boards of the Velodrome National, a state of the art venue used to host the elite of track cycling. But he had warned before his latest attempt that his current form was not as good. 'I did not see the sign warning me I had 10 minutes left,' Marchand said after his effort. 'Otherwise I would have gone faster, I would have posted a better time. I'm not tired. I thought my legs would hurt, but they don't. My arms hurt, you have to hurt somewhere.' Three years ago at the same venue, Marchand covered 26.927 kilometers (16.731 miles) in one hour to better his own world record in the over-100s category. Still, impressed fans and chanted 'Robert, Robert' during the last minutes of his ride. Marchand received a standing ovation once he completed the last of his 92 laps and was then mobbed by dozens of cameramen and TV crews. 'He could have been faster but he made a big mistake. He has stopped eating meat over the past month after being shocked by recent reports on how animals are subjected to cruel treatment,' Marchand's physiologist, Veronique Billat, told The Associated Press. By way of comparison, the current overall world record for one hour is 54.526 kilometers (33.880 miles) set by British rider Bradley Wiggins in 2015. But Wiggins, who smashed the previous record using the world's leading track cycling equipment, is now retired. Marchand, who lives in a small flat in a Parisian suburb with a meager pension of about 900 euros ($940), keeps pedaling and stretching every day. As if time had no effect on him. 'He's got two essential qualities. A big heart that pumps a lot of blood, and he can reach high heart beat values that are exceptional for his age,' said Billat, a university professor. 'If he starts eating meat again and builds more muscle, he can better this mark.' Marchand, a former firefighter who was born in 1911 in the northern town of Amiens, has lived through two world wars. He led an eventful life that took him to Venezuela, where he worked as a truck driver near the end of the 1940s. He then moved to Canada and became a lumberjack for a while. Back in France in the 1960s, Marchand made a living through various jobs that left him with no time to practice sports. He finally took up his bike again when he was 68 years old and began a series of cycling feats. The diminutive Marchand — he is 1.52 meters (5-foot) tall and weighs 52 kilograms (115 pounds) — rode from Bordeaux to Paris, and Paris to Roubaix several times. He also cycled to Moscow from Paris in 1992 and set the record for someone over the age of 100 riding 100 kilometers (62 miles). 'If the president of his teenage club who told him he was not made for cycling because he was too small could see him today, he would kick himself,' Marchand's coach and good friend Gerard Mistler told the AP. According to Mistler, the secret behind Marchand's longevity relates to his healthy lifestyle: eating a lot of fruits and vegetables, no smoking, just the occasional glass of wine and exercising on a daily basis. 'He never pushed his limits, goes to bed at 9 p.m. and wakes up at 6 a.m., there's no other secret,' Mistler said. 'If had been doping, he would not be there anymore.' To stay fit, Marchand rides every day on his home trainer and puts himself through outdoor training sessions on the road when the weather is good enough. 'One needs to keep his muscles working,' said Marchand, a faithful reader of communist newspaper L'Humanite. 'Reading a lot keeps his mind alert,' Mistler said. 'He does not watch much TV, apart from the Tour de France stages.' At 105, Marchand is not making plans for the future. His coach would not be surprised to see him back on the boards, though. 'Setting goals for himself is part of his personality,' Mistler said. 'If he tells me he wants to improve his record, I'll be game. Robert is a great example for all of us.' .....»»

Olympiakos, Dinamo Zagreb win Champs League playoff 1st legs

BERN, Switzerland (AP) — Olympiakos and Dinamo Zagreb took big steps toward returning to the Champions League group stage with convincing wins in the first leg of their playoff-round games on Wednesday. Olympiakos scored three late goals to beat Russian debutant Krasnodar 4-0, and Dinamo struck twice in the first half hour in a 2-0 win over Rosenborg. Young Boys was the only home team not to win, needing a 76th-minute penalty awarded by video review — and scored by French veteran Guillaume Hoarau — to secure a 2-2 draw with Red Star Belgrade. Red Star, playing its seventh qualifying game in seven weeks, is trying to advance from the first qualifying round to the group stage in back-to-back seasons. Olympiakos played the first of its 18 Champions League campaigns more than a decade before Krasnodar was founded in 2008. The Greek runner-up took the lead in the 30th through Spanish forward Miguel Ángel Guerrero. A flurry of goals from the 78th minute by Lazar Randelovic, twice, and Daniel Podence gave Krasnodar a daunting task in the second leg next Tuesday. Once a Champions League regular, Rosenborg trailed to an early penalty by Dinamo's Bruno Petkovic, and Mislav Orsic doubled the lead in the 28th. Red Star, the 1991 European champion, trailed to a seventh-minute goal by Young Boys forward Roger Assalé that was leveled in the 18th by Australia defender Milos Degenek's looping header. Mateo Garcia put the Serbian champion ahead a minute into the second half, before Hourau came off the bench to level from the spot. The 35-year-old former France international went close to winning the game for the Swiss champion with a glancing header in the 89th......»»

MPBL: Batangas City wins thriller at home versus Bacoor

Batangueños experienced the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Season at its best on Tuesday night when their team, the Batangas City Athletics - Tanduay, came from behind late to snatch victory from the Bacoor Strikers, 68-67. A large and boisterous crowd at the Batangas City Sports Coliseum spurred Rum City to victory despite being down by as much as 16. Mon Rogado's lay-up with 3.5 seconds left in the game gave Tanduay their first lead of the night.  "Ang hirap noong down kami by 16 pero sinabi ni coach na ituloy lang Ang depensa at mga play natin," said Justin Melano, who was named best player of the game for his team-high 20 points and 13 boards. Bacoor were controlling the tempo of a physical and at times ill-tempered contest, largely due to the inspired play of Michael Mabulac, who tallied 16 points. With a minute to go in the third and Bacoor up 52-41, Striker Oping Sumalinog fouled out in unusual circumstances. He was called for a blocking foul, his fourth of the game. The former Blue Eagle protested the call and touched the referee while doing so, which is a technical foul under FIBA rules. That meant a fifth foul and an early shower for Sumalinog. The Athletics clawed back in the fourth but found themselves down, 64-55, with five minutes to go after a jumper from Bacoor's Mike Ayonayon. Then the big guns of Batangas took over. Melano and Jeff Viernes both rifled in triples before Rogado's game-winner sealed a memorable home win. Batangas ended up scoring 11 of the last 14 points. The win catapults Batangas to above .500 on 4-3 while Bacoor lose for only the third time in 11 games. There was another nervy finish in the early evening match-up when Imus Bandera Khaleb Shawarma GLC Trucks and Equipment narrowly defeated Nueva Ecija ForestLake, 75-73, in a see-saw encounter. Three free throws in the last minute by Jayjay Helterbrand gave Khaleb Shawarma a 75-70 cushion. Nueva Ecija could have pulled to within three when Jimbo Aquino was tagged while shooting a triple, but he could only manage to hit one of the three attempts from the line. Aquino made a late lay-up as time expired for the final score. Helterbrand scored 11 points, but former UE Red Warrior James Martinez was Imus' talisman with 12 points. Gerald Anderson had a fair day with 6 points and a pair of assists for Imus. Aquino had the most output for Nueva Ecija with 16. Imus improves to 3-6 while the Ecijanos drop to 2-7. In the afternoon encounter, Basilan Steel Jumbo Plastic gored Navotas Uni-Pak Sardines 113-94 with an awesome display of firepower from start to finish. Gab Danganon led Basilan with 20 points, followed by Arvie Bringas with 19. Hesed Gabo dished out 13 dimes for the Steel. Basilan fired on all cylinders to take a 63-45 lead at the half against a turnover-prone Navotas side. Chris Dumapig's 13 points led Basilan at that point, who shot over 70 percent from two-point range in the first 20 minutes. Basilan's total was two shy of the league record for most number of points in a half by one side. Early in the third quarter Basilan kept up with their relentless offense, unspooling a 13-2 run spiked by back-to-back-to-back buckets from Danganon to open up an 80-51 lead. Navotas then showed a pulse with an 11-0 run to pull to 85-68 at the end of the third. But three quick baskets from Bringas and a three-ball from Danganon gave the stea a 94-73 lead, quelling the insurrection from the Navoteños for good. Basilan ended up shooting 60 percent from the field. Elmer Cabahug led Navotas with 13 points. Navotas suffers a fourth loss in a row to plummet to 2-6 while the Mindanaoans surge to 7-4.....»»

Without Messi, Barcelona loses 1st league opener in 10 years

By Tales Azzoni, Associated Press MADRID (AP) — Barcelona lost its opening Spanish league match for the first time in a decade on Friday, falling at Athletic Bilbao 1-0 as Antoine Griezmann couldn't make up for Lionel Messi's absence. Veteran striker Aritz Aduriz scored from a spectacular overhead kick a minute after coming off the bench in the 88th minute, handing Barcelona the loss after 10 straight opening league wins. Griezmann, Barcelona's biggest offseason signing, was held scoreless in his competitive debut after joining from rival Atlético Madrid for 120 million euros ($133 million). It was a lackluster performance for the France forward whose only significant scoring chance came with a header in the final minutes. "The ball didn't go in, and in the end that's what matters the most," Griezmann said. "We have to keep working hard to improve and to rebound as soon as possible." Griezmann didn't have Messi by his side because the Argentina star is nursing a right calf injury, and he couldn't count on Luis Suárez either after the Uruguay striker had to be replaced in the first half because of an apparent muscle injury at San Mamés Stadium. Philippe Coutinho couldn't play because of a pending move to Bayern Munich on a loan, but youngster Frenkie de Jong made his competitive debut with the Catalan club after joining from Ajax. Barcelona had most of the significant chances, being denied by the woodwork a few times, including with a shot by Suárez just before he had to be replaced. "We weren't ourselves," Barcelona defender Gerard Pique said. "It happens. We are coming off a preseason, we have a lot of new players in the team. This will be good for us going forward, it's better to lose now than in the end of the season." The match seemed headed to a draw when the 38-year-old Aduriz, in his final season before retiring, came off the bench and scored with his amazing overhead kick from a right-flank cross by Ander Capa. The cross went over the Barcelona defenders and Aduriz reached high with his right foot to send the ball into the far corner and ignite the crowd of more than 47,000 at San Mamés. "Football is so beautiful sometimes because of things like this. It gives you chances like this," said Aduriz, a former Spain international. "It will be impossible not to miss this. I'm just incredibly happy to be able to choose how I'm ending my career, and to be able to do it at the place that I love the most." Barcelona's last setback in a Spanish league opener was in 2008, a 1-0 defeat at Numancia in Pep Guardiola's coaching debut with the Catalan club. Real Madrid, trying to rebound from one of its worst seasons in the last decade, opens at Celta Vigo on Saturday without new signing Eden Hazard because of a left thigh injury. Atlético Madrid, runner-up the last two seasons, hosts Getafe on Sunday without Griezmann but with 19-year-old Portuguese sensation João Félix likely in the squad......»»

Brazilian police dismiss rape claim against Neymar

By Mauricio Savarese, Associated Press SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian police said Tuesday they have decided there are no grounds to bring rape charges against soccer star Neymar. And they're investigating whether his accuser filed a false report. "We checked all the possibilities. I did not see enough elements to indict," Sao Paulo police investigator Juliana Lopes Bussacos said in a press conference. She also rejected possible assault charges. Bussacos' decision could be revised by prosecutors within 15 days. Brazilian model Najila Trindade accused the 27-year-old forward of raping her in a Paris hotel in May. He denied the accusation and said their relations were consensual. Bussacos interviewed Trindade three times about her claims. She also said 12 other people were also questioned. Neymar himself heard for about five hours in mid-June. Police also inspected cellphones, a tablet of Trindade's son and medical reports offered by the accuser. The model filed her complaint in Sao Paulo on May 31, alleging Neymar raped her earlier in the month in Paris. No complaint was filed with French police. Her case has been complicated by the fact three of her attorneys withdrew from the case after the complaint was filed. Bussacos did not detail what led her to the conclusions because the probe is still under secrecy rules. "The whole set of evidence led me not to indict," the investigator said. Neymar's spokeswoman Day Crespo told The Associated Press the player will not make comments for now. The player is currently in a preseason tour of Asia with his club, Paris Saint-Germain. Cosme Araújo, an attorney for Trindade, told journalists the police conclusions are "absurd" and insisted Bussacos should have waited for security camera video from the Paris hotel. The investigator said those images were not essential to her investigation. Sao Paulo police director Albano David Fernandes said the investigators will look into whether Trindade falsely reported a rape, based on Bussaco's findings. Investigator Monique Lima said it would be premature to accuse Trindade of any crime. "That investigation is also under secrecy," Lima said. "We will indict anyone who has acted in bad faith. We will hear those involved to see if there was a slanderous accusation or a false report." Trindade's attorney did not comment on the investigation of his client's claims. The AP doesn't name alleged sexual assault victims unless they make their identities public, which Trindade did in several interviews......»»

MPBL: Chad Alonzo finds home with Imus, serves as mentor to younger bigs

Three years ago, Chad Alonzo wasn't even on a basketball team. The former Adamson Soaring Falcon forward was just coming off brief stints with ASEAN Basketball League team MX3 Kings Pilipinas and KIA in the PBA. Now, the grizzled 35-year-old veteran is one of the leaders of the Imus Khaleb Shawarma/GLC franchise in the on-going Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Lakan Season. "Thankful lang din ako at tinayo ang liga na ito. Everybody, nagkakaroon pa ng chance talaga," said Alonzo, who returned to high-level basketball in 2017 when the MPBL inaugurated. "Yung for the love of the game, andoon eh. Age is just a number. Marami pang mas beterano nga sa atin eh. Pagdating sa MPBL, lahat nabigyan ng chance e. Yung mga bata naman, nakakapag-PBA. Maganda talaga yung programa." It turned out, Imus had always kept their eyes on the 6-foot-4 bruiser. And when the squad had the chance to secure his services, they did. "After ng Bacoor Strikers, free agent ako, and then sinabihan ako ng coaching staff ng Imus, and sabi nila, Chad, punta ka sa amin," shared Alonzo. Liking what they saw, Imus team manager Lou Abad presented Alonzo his new contract. It has not been an easy route so far for the Khaleb Shawarma/GLC crew, faltering in three of their first four outings. But being among the tested veterans on the line-up, Alonzo has been quite a presence in the locker room and in practice. "Medyo nakaka-adjust na lahat. Nagg-gel na yung team kaya unti-unti, maganda na yung tinatakbo kaya maganda rin yung outcome last game," he said. "Ang pagkakaiba dito sa Imus, talagang bago yung team. Lahat ng players bago, hindi kagaya sa mga previous team ko na talagang magkakasama na. Naging responsibility dito ng mga veterans ay tulungan yung mga teammates ko lalo na't mga bago pa sila." With eight years of PBA experience in the bag, Alonzo has served as a leader to younger front-liners like Gelo Vito and Jay-R Ng Sang, and he says he finds joy being that figure for them. "Dito sa MPBL, gusto ko matulungan lang yung ibang mga players. Yung mga gustong makapag-PBA. Mayroon kaming mga gustong magpa-draft," shared Alonzo. "So pwede kaming makatulong nina Jayjay Helterbrand." Not to be outdone, Alonzo even opened up about going toe-to-toe with the youngsters in practice, keeping up with them as he would receive compliments afterwards. "Sinasabi nila, Chad, para kang college lang ah. Paunahan eh, mabibilis, pero nakakasabay pa," recalled Alonzo. "Nakakatuwa talaga kasi karamihan, mga bata. Naishe-share ko sa kanila yung kung anong na-experience ko before sa PBA." Alonzo's last game with Imus was a testament to that, as he scored a double-double performance of 15 points and 12 rebounds in a decisive 82-70 win over the Soccksargen Marlins-Armor On. Such display that he could still be of significance to an MPBL club not only helped Imus, but inspired the rest of his teammates in general to develop winning attitude. "Yung mga bata, kailangan ipakita mo rin eh kasi ikaw yung veteran. Nakakatuwa naman sila kasi ginagaya nila and nagiging habit na nila sa practice. Lahat naman, sa sipag nadadaan eh. Nage-extra na sila after practice," he said. "Kung anong mga pwedeng maitulong sa kanila, ginagawa ko. Minsan nga, ganado pa sila mag-ensayo kasi nakikita nila na nakikipagsabayan ako sa kanila." Alonzo knows it will still be a long road for them in the Lakan Cup, but finding a niche is what's vital in keeping his career going, and perhaps lead him to another championship. "Kung papalarin talaga, sana makukuha rin ng title. Sana malayo ang marating ng Imus," he remarked. About Imus-Khaleb Shawarma/GLC Bandera: Imus-Khaleb Shawarma/GLC Bandera is one of the 10 pioneering teams of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League playing in the Southern Division of the league playing at the Imus City Sports Complex in Imus, Cavite, a third-class city in the Philippines. Khaleb Shawarma/GLC hold a 2-3 record in the Southern Division of the Lakan Cup and are undefeated at home. They will next play the Paranaque Patriots-F2 Logistics on July 30 at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex.  .....»»

Basilan announces arrival as champs of Chooks 3x3 Patriot’s Cup

Newcomers Phenom-Basilan Steel completed their Cinderella run in the 2019 Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3 Patriot's Cup presented by Coca-Cola, outlasting veteran-laden Wilkins-Balanga Pure, 21-20, in an overtime thriller, last Saturday at SM Megamall Events Center. Not only did Basilan punch their ticket to the 2019 FIBA 3X3 Jeddah Masters on October 18 to, they also brought home PhP 1,000,000 in cash. "Wala akong masabi. It couldn't get more exciting as this," said Basilan team manager Jackson Chua. "Ang hirap ng dinaanan namin. No better way to end it." And Basilan has no one else to thank, but Franky Johnson for this one. In the race-to-two extra time period, Basilan was down one after a Karl Dehesa layup.  Showing his veteran wares in the next possession, Troy Rike made a quick handoff to Johnson who then danced his way to the right corner before heaving a fadeaway deuce over the outstretched arms of Dehesa. Pandemonium ensued afterward. "Everything was just moving so fast," recalled Johnson. "I wasn’t even thinking about that shot, but as soon as my teammate got the rebound and got the ball to me, I was just kinda open a little bit so I just decided to pull it.  "Thank God it went in, so I’m really excited about that," he expressed.  Johnson had four points in the Million Peso Game while Rike had one.  Marcus Hammonds and Roosevelt Adams also added 11 and six points, respectively, for the Steel. For the second straight conference, the Balanga franchise finished in second-place, bringing home PhP 400,000 and a ticket to the 2019 Xiongan Challenger which takes place from August 23-24.  Alvin Pasaol and Travis Franklin paced Balanga with seven points each. Chris De Chavez, who forced overtime with a driving layup with six ticks remaining, and Dehesa added three markers apiece. The Gold’s Gym-Pasig Kings completed the podium, bagging PhP 200,000.
