The inanities and shenanigans of Vice Ganda
The mere mention of his showbiz moniker Vice Ganda immediately brings to mind this persona of a blabbermouth — a cross-dressing, larger-than-life gay man that is the creation of Jose Marie Viceral. As Vice Ganda, he has had his lion’s share of box-office hit movies and sold-out concerts, as well as becoming one of the pillars of the noontime program It’s Showtime and an inspiration to the descamisados, madlang pipol and maricons aspiring for and coveting what he possesses and represents. Vice is famous, affluent, social media and traditional media-savvy, with an Ion Perez as a lover that completes his fairy-tale existence. His sense of humor and the kind of comedy that his adoring public consumes polarize viewers. His movies are no way near the guffaw-inducing antics and commitment of a Roderick Paulate. The comedic elements are almost similar but not quite with the political incorrectness and craziness that are staples in the movies of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon. Definitely, the humor in Ganda’s offerings are not as funny and pale in comparison with the intelligently written sketches and characters of Michael V. The junk food masquerading as laugh-out-loud fare is inferior to the charisma, magic and legend of the one and only Philippine Comedy King Dolphy. It is a given that Vice Ganda is an easy target of the nakakainis na nagmamalinis demographics. Proof of this: An aging politician hogged the headline lately when he lambasted the comedian: “Sarili mo lang ang iniisip mo, akala mo maganda iyang ginagawa mo. Super bastos ka, bastos kang tao (You only think about yourself, you think what you are doing is good. You’re super rude, you’re a rude person).” This outburst and judgment from a political dinosaur is lamentable. But with this tirade, the stock value of the reigning fairy this side of Hollywood actually gets a reboot and a fresh dose of relevance. Prior to this high and mighty summation of who Ganda is and what he represents, public perception was ripe that the hold, popularity and reign of Vice was going downhill. Whatever he was holding on to was all confined, controlled and milked in the afternoon program and early primetime weekend singing competition that he hosted. When Vice became the replacement brand ambassador of an online shopping app, the decision puzzled some, given the lackluster sales of the makeup brand that Ganda carries. Add the fact that even during the height of Jose Marie’s reign and popularity, there were only a handful of brands that gave their trust to him. It has been so many days since the app’s sale date and still, there is no official statement on how massive the increase in purchases has been with Vice as the figure employed to seduce the public to spend their hard-earned pesos online. Likewise, the box-office powers and premium of Ganda are no longer stellar and superior. Well- chronicled and documented are his “may pera sa basura” kind of movies. But for two years now in succession, his movies have been clobbered by family dramas that put an exclamation point to his producers laughing their way to bank supremacy. Indeed, it was an astute decision not to participate in this year’s December festival, because his movie not grabbing the number one spot is almost inevitable, and it will be further proof of the old saying that bad luck comes in threes. But now, I cannot help but wonder: With a political dinosaur’s statements about his crudeness and salacious behavior, and a “criminal case” filed by a “kapisanan” latching on to the MTRCB brouhaha, will everything turn rosy and robust once more for the career and romance of the Unkabogable Vice Ganda? Time, being the best storyteller, will provide us the answer. The post The inanities and shenanigans of Vice Ganda appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Angono intensifies waste management
The local government of Angono’s Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office on Tuesday said that it will strengthen the “no segregation, no collection policy” as part of the zero-basura program pursuant to Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. In a statement, Angono Mayor Jeri Mae Calderon underscored the importance of systematic management of solid wastes in their locality which is known for its green programs. According to Municipal Administrator Alan Maniaol, who also sits as officer-in-charge of MENRO, his office has already dispatched “color-coded garbage bins” in the public facilities such as public market, plaza, schools and other public places in the town. Maniaol also said they have deployed personnel on the ground who are tasked to monitor and to implement the law and ordinance related to waste disposal. Among the existing mechanism of the municipality, otherwise known as the Art Capital of the Philippines, is the processing of collected wastes with the help of private sector that hauls garbage at the town’s materials recovery facility to be used as raw material for making other products. Why Jake Ejercito and Kylie Verzosa love ‘ukay’ fashion
Jake Ejercito and Kylie Verzosa are excited to be part of Fit Check: Confessions of an Ukay Queen, thefashion-themed series produced by ABS-CBN Entertainment and Dreamscape Entertainment that’s now streaming on Prime Video in the Philippines and in more than 240 countries worldwide. Ejercito takes on the male lead character of Chris Blanco, a top executive at a fashion company founded by his father Michael Blanco (played by Christopher de Leon). Chris helps “ukay queen” Melanie (Kim Chiu) become a fashion designer. Verzosa, meanwhile, plays Chris’ secretary Stella, who makes life difficult for Melanie. Fashion sense “My fashion sense is, I would say, I prioritize comfortability,” Ejercito told Daily Tribune at a recent watch party for Fit Check: Confessions of an Ukay Queen. “I think when you’re comfortable, everything else follows. Kumportable ka sa suot mo. I become confident, and that’s what’s more important to me.” Ejercito doesn’t have a favorite designer or go-to brand for his fashion needs, explaining that he usually checks on fashion websites or Instagram for inspiration. For Verzosa, favoring “classic pieces” defines her fashion sense. She explained, “I like mixing and matching. I love wearing blacks and whites. But during work, mixed.” She made it clear, though, that she’s not obsessed with designer items. In fact, she only bought, in Singapore, her first designer item — a Celine bag — as a treat for herself after winning Miss International in 2016. Ukay finds Both Ejercito and Verzosa confessed to being fans of ukay-ukay, or second-hand, shopping. “There’s no shame in wearing something from ukay,” said Ejercito, who’s always on the lookout for vintage band shirts. “Kasi usually, di ba, kinakahiya. Yes, ukay is second-hand, third, or even fourth. It could be treated by its previous owner as basura, pero it could be a gem for someone else. So, there’s no shame in ukay.” Verzosa, a native of Baguio City that’s famous for wagwagan (the locals’ term for ukay-ukay), recalled having the best time with her high school friends at night markets and finding fashion pieces priced at P5 to P10. Her advice: “You just keep on looking. Dapat may patience ka. Ako, I look for designer brands na hard-to-find. I love going for vintage pieces and more classic pieces. Try to avoid the trendy ones.” The post Why Jake Ejercito and Kylie Verzosa love ‘ukay’ fashion appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Napolcom strategy shift gains support
The House Committee on Dangerous Drugs backed the National Police Commission’s proposed shift of strategy on the government’s anti-drug campaign metrics-driven approach to stave off cops from fabricating arrests and seizures for possible rank promotion. Panel chairperson Surigao del Norte Representative Ace Barbers concurred with Napolcom vice chair and executive officer Atty. Alberto Bernardo’s statement that the Philippine National Police system of promotion and performance rating of anti-drug police operatives is “seriously flawed.” “Imagine, based on these fake accomplishments, the officers kept on being promoted until they are high up in the ladder and can control and influence the organization,” Barbers said. He stressed that the cops are focusing on the statistics-heavy analysis that forced them to stage bogus and fabricated accomplishments. Barbers’ remark came just days after Bernardo revealed in a Senate hearing last week that the Napolcom eyes to shift away from a metric-driven analysis of the country’s drug situation in the aftermath of the controversy surrounding the P6.7-billion drug haul in Manila in October last year involving 49 PNP officials and personnel and its alleged double cover-up. The legislator, on the other hand, emphasized that police have become so acclimated to their illegal operations that they have become an integral component of the entire drug mafia. “The promotion is just one part. The worst part is the reward, monetary as well as ‘saving’ a huge chunk of the drug haul, as another form of rewarding themselves. This drug haul is called savings and ends up being recycled back into the streets,” Barbers said. During the panel’s motu proporio in March into the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency’s alleged scheme of giving its police assets a portion of illegal drugs seized as a “reward” for their successful operations, two informants disclosed that the PDEA and the PNP would hand them “basura,” or shabu, as a reward every time their tips led to an arrest, which can range from 30 to 70 percent of the haul. According to the agency’s informants, the “reward” came from drugs hauled, seized, and confiscated that had been recycled over the past 20 years. The arrest of now-dismissed PMSgt. Rodolfo Mayo Jr., involving 49 PNP officials and personnel -- the latest controversy that rocked the agency -- further revealed an unlawful scheme of recycling or resale of drugs seized from their operations by alleged ninja cops.
