Crypto crackdown intensifies on Hamas finance
Cryptocurrency has become the latest front in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, analysts say. Israeli and US authorities have intensified their financial hunt into Hamas in recent days as they track illicit funds via digital currencies. Ari Redbord, global policy head at crypto tracking specialist TRM Labs, said there is now less crypto transfer activity on pro-Hamas support networks as a result. "We are seeing a lot less activity in some respects since the war began," Redbord told AFP. This is "primarily because Israel has been very aggressive and successful in taking down these fundraising efforts", he added. Israel has bombed Gaza in response to an unprecedented cross-border attack by Hamas militants who, while firing a massive rocket barrage, killed more than 1,400 people and took 222 hostages on 7 October, according to Israeli authorities. Israeli strikes have now killed more than 6,500 people in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Shadowy world Cryptocurrency is regarded as a speedy way to move cash that is unregulated by any central bank and is less traceable than a traditional bank transfer. The shadowy world of digital units, based on decentralized blockchain technology, has gained notoriety for illicit transactions due to its under-the-radar appeal. Two weeks ago, Israeli police revealed they had located and frozen accounts linked to Hamas that sought "to solicit donations on social networks" via Binance, the world's biggest cryptocurrency exchange. A Binance spokeswoman said it "follows internationally recognized sanctions rules, blocking the small number of accounts linked to illicit funds". Redbord, formerly a senior US government adviser, said Hamas had adopted crypto from 2019 at the latest, to seek funding via the Telegram messaging network and even on its own website. Hamas decided in April that it would no longer accept cash via Bitcoin due to increased global surveillance of the world's biggest digital unit. Crypto fundraising is now operated via a network of Hamas-linked support groups. TRM Labs has closely monitored virtual crypto wallets linked to such support groups since the start of the war. And it has concluded that much smaller amounts of cash than usual are being moved. Two weeks after the attacks, support group Gaza Now received less than $6,000 in one of its crypto wallets, Redbord noted. That compared with $800,000 in total since the wallet's creation in August 2021. Meanwhile, authorities are well aware that digital assets are a minor part of a complex funding picture. The US State Department estimates that Iran funnels $100 million per year to Palestinian groups including Hamas. 'Small piece of puzzle' "Cryptocurrency is a very small piece of a larger financing puzzle for Hamas," said Redbord. "They are looking to Iran; they're... imposing taxes on the Palestinians; they have a network of charities and a diaspora of supporters who are sending donations not in cryptocurrencies." "But crypto does play a role," he said. Digital currencies still represent a significant revenue stream for Hamas and other allied groups. Crypto addresses identified by Israel as being linked to Hamas received about $41 million between August 2020 and July 2023, according to Israeli analytics and software firm BitOK. Other crypto addresses linked to Islamic Jihad received in excess of $154 million between October 2022 and September 2023, with some still active, it adds. Some players in the sector simply turn a blind eye. "Some cryptoasset businesses are intentionally or unwittingly allowing misuse of the crypto ecosystem," said Joby Carpenter, an expert on the industry. "This trend is magnified where exchanges are based in lightly or unregulated jurisdictions," he told AFP. Swift stays on top but ‘Flower Moon’ impresses on North America screens
The new Taylor Swift concert movie held on to the top spot in North American theaters this weekend, but the history-based crime epic "Killers of the Flower Moon" had an impressive debut -- the best for a Martin Scorsese film since 2010. "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," distributed by AMC Theaters, took in an estimated $31 million for the Friday-through-Sunday period, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations said Sunday. That pushed the two-week domestic total for the film, which includes scenes from three of the pop superstar's concerts to $129.8 million. It is now the only concert film ever to top the box office for two straight weekends, Variety reported. Meantime, Scorsese's new film had a strong debut -- particularly given its three-and-a-half-hour runtime, its upcoming release on streamer Apple TV+, and the inability of stars Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio to promote it as the actors' strike continues -- taking in $23 million. "Reviews and audience scores are superb," said analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. With a slew of award nominations expected for the director and cast (also including Jesse Plemons and Lily Gladstone), "the picture is set up for a strong run," Gross added. "Flower Moon" tells the true story of the murders of Native Americans in Oklahoma early in the last century by evildoers after their oil rights. In the third spot for the weekend, down from second, was Universal's horror film "Exorcist: The Believer," at $5.6 million. Leslie Odom Jr. and Ann Dowd star in this scary sequel to the 1973 original. Fourth place went to Paramount's family-friendly animation "Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie," at $4.5 million. Taraji P. Henson, Chris Rock, Serena Williams, and McKenna Grace voice the super-pups. And in fifth was Disney's re-release of the 1993 classic "The Nightmare Before Christmas," at $4.1 million. Danny Elfman, Chris Sarandon, and Catherine O'Hara star in Tim Burton's dark stop-motion fantasy. Rounding out the top 10 were: "Saw X" ($3.6 million) "The Creator" ($2.6 million) "A Haunting in Venice" ($1.1 million) "The Blind" ($1 million) "The Nun II" ($887,000) The post Swift stays on top but ‘Flower Moon’ impresses on North America screens appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
A new ‘Exorcist’ takes possession of North America box office
Fifty years after the original, newly released "The Exorcist: Believer" topped the North American box office this weekend with an estimated $27.2 million in ticket sales, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations said Sunday. Analyst David A. Gross called that "a good opening for a horror sequel," the best of any of the "Exorcist" movies, despite what he said were poor reviews and lukewarm audience scores for Blumhouse and Universal's Halloween-timed film. Like the original, "Believer" features possessed victims convulsing, covered in sores, and speaking in tongues. It also has a decidedly interfaith exorcism. Leslie Odom Jr. and Ann Dowd star, with an appearance by Ellen Burstyn from the 1973 original. "Believer" was to have opened on Friday the 13th, but the studio moved up its release to avoid conflicting with the release that day of "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," a concert film certain to generate big numbers, Variety reported. Last weekend's box office leader, Paramount's family-friendly "Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie," slipped slightly to second, at $11.8 million for the Friday-through-Sunday period. The Paw Pups, using new superpowers as they fight to protect their city, are voiced by actors Taraji P. Henson, Chris Rock, Serena Williams, and McKenna Grace. In third, also down one spot, is Lionsgate's horror flick "Saw X," at $8.2 million. This latest in the "Saw" series, again with Tobin Bell as the infamous Jigsaw, has received strongly positive reviews. The fourth spot, down from third, went to 20th Century sci-fi thriller "The Creator," at $6.1 million. John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, and Allison Janney play humans in a world at war with artificial intelligence. Holding steady in fifth was Fathom Events' faith-based movie "The Blind," at $3.1 million. It portrays the real-life struggles of swamp-dwelling reality TV star Phil Robertson with addiction and romance. Rounding out the top 10 were: "A Haunting in Venice" ($2.7 million) "The Nun II" ($2.6 million) "Dumb Money" ($2.2 million) "The Equalizer 3" ($1.8 million) "Hocus Pocus: 30th Anniversary" ($1.5 million) The post A new ‘Exorcist’ takes possession of North America box office appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Ombudsman orders raps vs ex-SRA chief
The Ombudsman has ordered the filing of charges against former Sugar Regulatory Administration chief Hermenegildo Serafica for breaching the Government Procurement Reform Act over a nearly three-year delay in the procurement of farming tools. In a 21-page joint resolution, Ombudsman Samuel Martires found probable cause against Serafica for violating Section 65 (a)(2) of the law, which penalizes a public official who delays “without justifiable cause, the screening for eligibility and award of contracts beyond the prescribed period of bids or other documents.” The case stemmed from lapses in the issuance of the notice of award in the signing of the contract for the procurement of 25 units of ripper harrowers. A ripper harrower is a farm machine that rips up the soil for tilling. The complaint accused Serafica of deliberately prolonging the issuance of the Notice to Proceed with the purported intention of negotiating terms with the bidder, Super Trade Enterprises. “In this particular case, this Office cannot turn a blind eye to the three-year period it took to issue a notice to proceed,” the Ombudsman ruling read. “The delayed award, by itself, could have only amounted to Simple Neglect of Duty and Misconduct, but the protracted period to notify the supplier to proceed with the delivery of the harrows is a badge of (1) want of even the slightest care, or a conscious indifference to consequences, and (2) flagrant disregard of an established rule,” it said. Apart from the filing of charges, the Ombudsman also ordered Serafica’s perpetual disqualification from public office. Since Serafica vacated the post in 2022 following the sugar importation fiasco, the Ombudsman said he would still face the penalty of a fine equivalent to one year’s salary. Meanwhile, graft raps against Serafica were ordered dismissed. The post Ombudsman orders raps vs ex-SRA chief appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Charges filed against sugar chief Serafica
The Ombudsman will file criminal charges against Sugar Regulatory Administration's erstwhile chief, Hermenegildo Serafica, for breaching the Government Procurement Reform Act arising from the alleged procurement of farming tools that was delayed for nearly three years. In a 21-page joint resolution, Ombudsman Samuel Martires found probable cause to indict Serafica of the charges for violating Section 65 (a)(2) of the law, which penalizes any public official who delays "without justifiable cause, the screening for eligibility and awarding of contracts beyond the prescribed periods of bids or other documents." The case stemmed from almost three-year lapses from the issuance of the notice of the award to the signing of the contract for the procurement of 25 units of ripper harrower, which complainant Josephino Agosto argued that the prescribed timeframe for the process was limited to a mere ten days. The complaint accused Serafica of deliberately prolonging the issuance of the Notice to Proceed for nearly three years, with the purported intention of negotiating terms with the bidder, Super Trade Enterprises. "In this particular case, this Office cannot turn a blind eye on the three-year period it took to issue a notice to proceed," the Ombudsman said. "The delayed award, by itself, could have only amounted to Simple Neglect of Duty and Misconduct but the protracted period to notify the supplier to proceed with the delivery of the harrows is a badge of (1) want of even the slightest care, or a conscious indifference to consequences, and (2) flagrant disregard of an established rule," it added. Apart from filing charges, the Ombudsman also ordered Serafica's perpetual disqualification from holding public office. Since Serafica vacated the post in 2022 following the sugar importation fiasco, the Ombudsman said he would still face a penalty of fine equivalent to equivalent to one year's salary. Meanwhile, graft raps against Serafica were ordered dismissed. The post Charges filed against sugar chief Serafica appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Netflix sends out last DVD
Streaming powerhouse Netflix mailed out its last DVD on Friday, ending service after 25 years that helped the company grow into an entertainment behemoth. Founder Reed Hastings has often said that he started the company in a pique of frustration with the Blockbuster rental store that charged him $40 for returning the movie Apollo 13 six weeks late. Out of that eventually came the idea for a subscription-based DVD-by-mail service that let the customer hold onto the title as long as they wanted. Once viewed, the DVD was slipped into a prepaid envelope and sent back to the company, with the subscriber's next choice sent on its way in exchange. "In 1998, we delivered our first DVD. This morning, we shipped our last," the company said on its website on Friday. "For 25 years, we redefined how people watched films and series at home and shared the excitement as they opened their mailboxes to our iconic red envelopes," the statement added. In April, when the decision to stop DVD rentals was announced, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said those "iconic" mailings "changed the way people watched shows and movies at home -- and they paved the way for the shift to streaming." On its site, the company said the mail service accumulated 40 million unique subscribers throughout its run, mainly in the United States. The streaming platform currently has 238 million subscribers worldwide. Netflix said that the first movie mailed out was the comedy Beetlejuice and that more than 5.2 billion DVDs have been sent out since then. The most-rented DVD was the US sports drama "The Blind Side" starring Sandra Bullock. That feel-good movie, about a white family that takes in a Black homeless child, was released in 2009 when the DVD service was at the height of its popularity. That movie has since proved controversial after the former NFL star and subject of the film Michael Oher said the portrayal was exaggerated and filled with inaccuracies.
