MSMEs’ digital shift needs collaboration
The global Covid-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the micro, small and medium enterprises, or MSMEs, with the economic shocks reverberating worldwide. However, the pandemic also saw an unprecedented focus on the struggling sector. Despite being diminutive in size, MSMEs make up for the shortcoming with their sheer volume, making them a source of significant contributions to the local economy. The latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed MSMEs comprised 99.52 percent of total businesses in the country, or over 998,342 Filipino enterprises delivering goods and services daily. “In the fast-paced business landscape, MSMEs are facing increased pressure to apply digital technology on their operations to remain competitive and even upscale,” Dino Velasco, the senior vice president and institutional segment marketing head at Union Bank of the Philippines, said in an interview with the Daily Tribune’s digital show Business Sense. “The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend, with businesses across the globe, regardless of size, rapidly adopting digitalization to survive and thrive in the so-called new normal,” he added. UnionBank ceded it could not take the whole task by itself. It needed to partner with stakeholders to address the enormity of the challenge. Foremost in the task is the geography of the Philippines with 7,641 islands which are broadly categorized in three main geographical divisions from north to south. Some of these islands are off-grid, which requires powering up first before they can be connected digitally and served by traditional financing facilities, like UnionBank. “We also do understand and accept the fact that we cannot do it alone. For us at UnionBank, it’s very important to work with partners and we do have partners both in the technology space and in the brick-and-mortar space that allow us to expand or reach even further. Going beyond the 80 percent of the population that are connected and reach the other 20 percent off-grid,” Velasco added. Looking at the Philippine financial landscape, the fintech space has evolved, with telcos, power providers and distributors, money business services, logistics, and others, who are present in off-grid communities as part of the whole-of-nation approach to achieving financial inclusion. Velasco went on, “We continue to partner with these vital stakeholders so that we can provide and extend our financial services to the markets in those areas.” GlobalLinker The greatest hurdles to the successful adoption of digital technology among MSME is overcoming the lack of expertise and good practices, and the associated costs. For a broader uptake of digital tools for these sectors, there needs to be more widely available standardized and even ready templates that the MSMEs can use like a plug-and-play setup. These ready templates would help avoid the appearance of costly and complicated tools and potentially enhance the opportunities for MSMEs to achieve sustainability. “That has always been the challenge for technology, not just for banking, but a lot of industries. How do we educate the more senior segment of the population,” Velasco replied when queried on how to educate MSMEs to embrace digital tools to advance sustainability. Velasco added: “What works is to educate the influencers for that more senior population of the segment. A lot of the small businesses today have in the past, involved other members of the family in running their businesses and they become part of educating those who are trying to use technology for the first time. We noticed that we can adapt that strategy by involving these family members who influence the other members, especially those who are already digitally savvy.” In addition, UnionBank has launched the Global Linker, an online platform designed for e-Commerce that allows users or MSMEs to create their website, while also offering them the opportunity to manage their inventories and link up with other merchants, suppliers, and even resellers. The UnionBank GlobalLinker is a digital SME online platform that aims to digitize SMEs in the country. To create trade fairs and online marketplaces for Filipinos all over the country, we are dedicated to the digital education of all Filipino SMEs. Velasco explained that after creating their website through GlobalLinker, the merchants are now accessible to potential clients “wherever there may be, here or outside the Philippines.” “Imagine if you are an exporter from the Philippines and you have a potential client from India. Because of GlobalLinker, you can communicate with each other and ensure that the goods and services can be ordered and delivered to your client overseas. More importantly, this e-Commerce site is equipped with the necessary tools in ways by which customers can settle or pay digitally,” he said. Velasco continued, “And if you are using our MSME Business Banking app, you can transact overseas and pay someone using Swift (code). Basically, the GlobalLinker is business networking for MSMEs and startups.” Mobile app introduced In the age of a growing demand for digital presence, Velasco said it goes unsaid that UnionBank sees the need for digital technology as a critical tool for MSMEs that want to grow or expand. “What we’re focusing on is to feature our MSME Mobile Business Banking App that we developed to answer the needs of our customers from beginning to end,” Velasco said. “Meaning end-to-end from the time a small business owner needs to apply for an account to the time when they need to manage their businesses. Using the app right solely instead of going to other channels where they need to get out of their offices and go to the branch.” The UnionBank mobile app aims to educate its users to allow the app to let “everything happen while they’re using the app or the platform.” The app also aims to create solutions for the users, like the QR code feature to allow merchants to accept payments from their customers. “It is really an end-to-end feature from account opening to transferring funds, to paying suppliers to accept payments from their customers and up to even applying for a loan facility,” Velasco added. The mobile app is something UnionBank wants to make available in the hands of its customers by simply accessing the mobile banking app for MSMEs. Necessary journey It is no longer a choice for MSMEs. Digitalization is now a necessary journey that all MSMEs must embrace to survive and succeed. Using digital technology may save significant costs for the MSMEs, while at the same time enhancing their operations, sales, marketing, and presence. A digitized MSME may also see increased productivity and efficiency, and improved customer service. But digitalization also comes with several challenges, including technological know-how, funding, and even data security. UnionBank of the Philippines is offering several platforms to solve these challenges. All you have to do is click and download their digital platform offerings. UnionBank is committed to helping MSMEs achieve their digital transformation goals, with their expertise and cost-effective solutions. Creative Industries Month to witness ‘the grandest battle of creativity’
The buzzwords this month and until November are "creativity" and "creative industries." September has been declared the "Creative Industries Month" by the Philippine government, and one reason for such declaration is the activation of the law known as Philippine Creative Industries Development Act, or Republic Act 11904. Pangasinan 4th District Representative Toff de Venecia is the principal author of the law, the chairman of the House Special Committee on Creative Industry and Performing Arts. De Venecia's clan on his mother's side used to be entrenched in film production. He is a son of Gina Vera-Perez De Venecia, daughter of Dr. Jose Vera Perez, the patriarch of pioneering film companies Sampaguita Pictures and Vera Perez Productions. Before he joined Pangasinan politics as son of former senator Jose De Venecia, Toff was active in theater, all the way back to his schooldays at the Ateneo de Manila. Sen. Loren Legarda, aside from being Senate President Pro-Tempore, is chair of the Senate committee on culture and the arts. For years a top broadcast journalist at ABS-CBN, Legarda is the principal author of Republic Act 11961, also known as the Cultural Mapping Law. Capsule workshops On 17 September, the NCCA launched the Creative Industries Month at the Rizal Park Open Air Auditorium in Manila with creative capsule workshops in the afternoon and a grand concert of songs, dances and puppetry in the evening. The festivities had the full support of the National Parks Development Committee and Concert at the Park. The workshops were anchored on various creative industries in the country. For instance, for the audiovisual media domain, the Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. conducted an introductory workshop on Learning Filipino through Wikaharian. For the digital interactive media domain, Dr. Albert Mulles of METATOKYO tackled “How to Start Your Own Blockchain Game Project” while the Department of Science and Technology presented “Learning Through Minecraft Exhibit.” Under the Design domain, there were workshops on shoemaking, parol and jewelry-making and T-shirt printing Workshop. Under publishing and printed media, Rustico Limosinero offered a basic comics workshop, while the Barasoain Kalinangan Foundation, Inc. discussed book- selling and exhibits. "This is a sector that has managed to survive and even thrive on its own, but with institutionalized support from the state, it will really help the creative industry sector grow and accelerate to the point where we want it to be — which is by 2030, the Philippines will be the number one creative economy in all of Asia,” said De Venecia. May we be really number 1 just seven years from today! The post Creative Industries Month to witness ‘the grandest battle of creativity’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
A resounding FIBA World Cup hosting success
In 2007, sports patron and prominent business executive Manny V. Pangilinan flew to Geneva to mend the country’s scarred relationship with FIBA when the Philippines was suspended due to a struggle between the Basketball Association of the Philippines and the Philippine Olympic Committee. Over the years, MVP, along with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas or SBP, were able to make amends and formed a strong bond with FIBA. And as they say, the rest was history. MVP’s vision to host the FIBA World Cup in a tri-nation bid was approved. The country, together with Japan and Indonesia, was granted to host the 2023 FIBA World Cup, with 32 teams competing for the coveted Naismith trophy for the 2023 Last Sunday, the World Cup curtain finally closed, with several records written, erased, and etched in FIBA history. First, the expanded World Cup adopted by the organizers successfully achieved a more competitive playing field. Nine of the 32 that came to this World Cup did not play in the previous World Cup. After two weeks of grueling competition, six of the eight countries that previously entered the quarterfinals in the 2019 World Cup failed to advance to the next round. Argentina, France, Spain, Poland, Australia, and the Czech Republic were eliminated earlier in the group stages, with only the US and Serbia moving to the semi-final round. Second, for the first time since it participated in the tournament, Germany won the World Cup championship, beating all its opponents in the elimination rounds for an immaculate 7-0 and completing an 8-0 game sweep by beating Serbia in the final, 83-77. FIBA secretary general Andreas Zagklis was quoted by AP saying the expanded qualification field “has changed global basketball on the men’s side.” Third, the three host countries had record-breaking attendance, a rousing success for the tri-nation hosting of the world’s biggest basketball show. Across 92 games in 15 days in five different venues (three in Manila, one each in Okinawa and Jakarta), Zagklis said the World Cup drew a total of 700,000 fans pending the final numbers from the bronze-medal match between USA and Canada and Serbia-Germany finale. In the opener on 25 August, the Philippines tallied a World Cup record featuring 38,115 fans who witnessed the thrilling battle between home team Gilas Pilipinas and the Dominican Republic at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan. The milestone highlighted the Philippines’ hosting and smashed the previous record of 32,616 spectators who watched the gold medal match between the USA and Russia in the 1994 games in Toronto, Canada. Zaglis was all praises for the three countries, especially the Philippines, whom he described as an excellent host. “I don’t think it’s easy to find anywhere in the world that has this kind of service to the visitors. Always with a smile and kindness and with a solution-oriented approach. I can only express how grateful FIBA is to the Philippines,” Zaglis said. SBP president Al S. Panlilio had mixed emotions as the FIBA World Cup ended. “We have proven that our country can host a global basketball event as huge as the FIBA World Cup. Everyone involved — the local organizing committee, various private and public stakeholders, volunteers, peace and order personnel, traffic enforcers, the LGUs, and basketball-loving Pinoys who bravely trooped to the venues to watch the games — must be congratulated for making the event a whopping success.” “But there’s also a feeling of extreme bittersweetness as it comes to an end, yet overshadowed by extreme hopefulness for the 2027 World Cup in Qatar,” he added. Panlilio spearheaded the country’s bid for the multiple-nation hosting of the World Cup along with MVP, SBP chairman emeritus, in 2017. He acknowledged what MVP did to bring the FIBA World Cup to the Philippines with his creative vision of bidding for multi-nation hosting. “It was a privilege to help realize that creative vision by collaboratively working with various groups and stakeholders and successfully hosting the World Cup. We are proud of the effort everyone contributed to make this huge undertaking a monumental and amazing feat,” Panlilio said. BRICS expansion: Boon or bane?
The BRICS alliance, comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has emerged as a significant player in the global geopolitical landscape since its inception in 2006. Over the years, BRICS has demonstrated its potential to influence international economic policies, trade agreements, and even security affairs. The proposal, therefore, to expand BRICS by incorporating six more nations, namely Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey, Nigeria, Egypt and Vietnam, is worthwhile as all of them are emerging economies with substantial influence in their respective regions. This expansion could enhance the economic and geopolitical clout of the BRICS alliance, bringing together a diverse group of countries with considerable resources, markets, and geopolitical importance. The inclusion of these six nations would significantly bolster BRICS’ economic power. Mexico, Indonesia, and Turkey, in particular, possess large and dynamic economies, adding greater diversity to the group’s financial portfolio. This expanded BRICS could collectively represent a substantial portion of global GDP, potentially rivaling the G7. The proposed expansion would give BRICS access to a broader range of natural and human resources. For instance, Nigeria and Egypt are rich in natural resources, while Vietnam offers a young and dynamic workforce. This resource diversity can stimulate economic growth and cooperation among member nations. The inclusion of these nations could strengthen BRICS’ influence in their respective regions. Indonesia, for instance, is a key player in Southeast Asia, while Nigeria holds sway in West Africa. This regional influence could help BRICS in pursuing its collective interests on the global stage. Expanding BRICS may enhance security and stability by providing a forum for member nations to collaborate on regional and global security issues. With increased representation, BRICS could become a more influential force in addressing challenges such as terrorism, cyber threats and regional conflicts. While the idea of BRICS expansion holds promise, it has its challenges and considerations. The inclusion of additional nations may lead to conflicting interests within BRICS. The current members already have diverse economic, political, and strategic goals, and adding more voices to the mix could complicate decision-making processes. Some proposed new members, such as Turkey, have complex geopolitical relationships with existing BRICS countries. Balancing these tensions while fostering cooperation will be crucial for the success of an expanded BRICS alliance. The existence of the G7 grouping adds another layer of complexity. The G7, consisting of economically advanced Western nations, has historically set the tone for global economic policies. The expansion of BRICS could create competition or cooperation between these two blocs, impacting global economic dynamics. The expansion of BRICS would undoubtedly significantly impact the world economy. With an enlarged membership, BRICS could exert greater influence over international economic policies, trade agreements, and financial institutions. This could lead to a more balanced and equitable global economic order. An expanded BRICS could challenge the dominance of Western-led institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. This may lead to the creation of alternative financial institutions that better represent the interests of emerging economies. BRICS’ expansion could facilitate increased trade and investment among member nations. This could create new business opportunities and stimulate economic growth, especially in regions with emerging markets like Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. A larger BRICS alliance would have a stronger voice in global economic governance. This could result in more inclusive policies that consider the needs and priorities of developing nations. Therefore, the idea of expanding BRICS represents a compelling proposition with the potential to reshape global economic and security dynamics. While challenges and complexities exist, the benefits of an enlarged BRICS alliance, including financial strength, resource diversity, and enhanced regional influence, cannot be ignored. However, the success of such an expansion would depend on the ability of member nations to navigate divergent interests, manage geopolitical tensions, and effectively cooperate on a global stage. More importantly, the relationship between an expanded BRICS and the G7 will play a crucial role in shaping the future of global governance. In an era of evolving international relations, an expanded BRICS could be a key player in driving positive change on the world stage. PBBM: ‘Phl rejects misleading narratives framing disputes in South China Sea’
JAKARTA, Indonesia — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. rejected misleading narratives that framed the disputes in the South China Sea due to geopolitical tension between the United States and China. Marcos made the remarks at the intervention during the 43rd ASEAN Summit Retreat Session this week, as he called on all parties to the disputes in the South China Sea to exercise self-restraint and resolve their differences peacefully. “The Philippines firmly rejects misleading narratives that frame the disputes in the South China Sea solely to the lens of strategic competition between two powerful countries," Marcos said. "This not only denies us our independence, our agency, but it also disregards our own legitimate interests," he added. Marcos also reiterated the Philippines' commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes in the South China Sea. He said that the Philippines will continue to uphold freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea, in accordance with international law. "We do not seek conflict," Marcos said. "But it is our duty as citizens and as leaders, to always rise and meet any challenge to our sovereignty, to our sovereign rights, and our maritime jurisdiction in the South China Sea." Marcos also called for self-restraint from all parties involved in the South China Sea disputes. He said that actions should be the ultimate measure of their commitment to securing peace and stability in the region. “History will ultimately judge whether the supremacy of the rule of law will prevail, ushering in an era where all nations truly stand as equals, independent and unswayed by any single, outside power,” Marcos said. “The challenge for us remains: we must never allow the international peaceful order to be subjected to the forces of might, applied for a hegemonic ambition. The future of peace rests now on how we, together, face this challenge to that peace,” he added. China asserts control over almost the entire South China Sea, but the international tribunal in The Hague rejected this assertion in 2016, after a case brought by the Philippines in 2013. Despite the tribunal's decision, Beijing has consistently disregarded and downplayed it, maintaining that it possesses an "undeniable" and "historical" right to most of the waters, even as it encroaches on the territories of smaller neighboring countries like the Philippines. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam have all contested China's extensive claims in the South China Sea. Hong Kong’s top court to rule on same-sex marriage
Hong Kong's top court will decide Tuesday whether to recognize same-sex marriages, rendering a verdict in one of the most consequential cases on the subject in the city's history. Over the past decade, LGBTQ activists in the former British colony have won piecemeal victories in court, striking down discriminatory government policies on visas, taxes, and housing benefits. But the case brought by jailed pro-democracy activist Jimmy Sham -- set to be decided at 2:30 pm local time (0630 GMT) Tuesday -- will be the first time Hong Kong's Court of Final Appeal has directly addressed the issue of same-sex marriage. Since launching his challenge in 2018, Sham, 36, has twice failed to convince the courts that Hong Kong should legally recognize his marriage to a same-sex partner, which was registered in New York nearly a decade ago. In his most recent setback, in August 2022, appeal judges wrote that Hong Kong's constitutional text "only provides access to the institution of marriage to heterosexual couples". Sham has argued the city's ban on same-sex marriage violates his right to equality, while the lack of a policy alternative -- such as civil unions -- does the same, in addition to breaching his right to privacy. British rights lawyer Karon Monaghan, representing Sham, told the court in June the ban disadvantages same-sex couples in areas such as inheritance and housing rentals. A poll this year found that 60 percent of Hong Kongers supported same-sex marriage, compared to just 38 percent a decade ago. Some international businesses in the city have also backed marriage equality campaigns, crediting it as a way to attract talent. But the city's Beijing-approved leadership has shown little appetite for passing laws that advance LGBTQ equality. Rights advocacy has partly gone underground after Beijing imposed a national security law on Hong Kong in 2020, following huge and sometimes violent pro-democracy protests in the finance hub. Sham, a prominent democracy campaigner, is one of dozens of activists behind bars awaiting prosecution under the security law on charges unrelated to LGBTQ rights. In July, a radio show promoting gay rights aired by Hong Kong's public broadcaster was canceled after a 17-year run. A lot of catching up to do
A disturbing trend at the close of the qualifying round of the ongoing FIBA World Cup in the host cities of Manila, Okinawa, and Jakarta saw Asian teams left to the mercy of traditional world powerhouses in basketball, having been relegated to the classification round of the 32-nation quadrennial event. The FIBA World Cup, a premier international basketball tournament, showcases the prowess of nations in the sport. In recent editions, however, a consistent trend has emerged where Asian teams, including the Philippines, found themselves relegated to the so-called consolation round, with none advancing to the second phase of the Round of 16. This phenomenon has ignited discussions about whether Asia, the world’s most populated region, is lagging behind its global counterparts in basketball. The best that the Philippines, Japan, Iran, Jordan, China and Lebanon could aspire to now is to top this round and earn a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics as the best-placed team from the region. While basketball has grown exponentially in Asia over the years, this historical disadvantage is not easily overcome. Skills development takes time, and it requires sustained efforts in coaching, talent identification, and grassroots programs. Nations with strong basketball traditions often boast of well-established leagues, state-of-the-art training facilities, and investment in coaching expertise. These conditions foster the growth of talent from a young age and create a competitive environment that nurtures skills development. Conversely, many Asian countries, while passionate about basketball, face challenges in terms of inadequate facilities, limited financial support, and lack of structured development pathways. This results in a smaller talent pool and limited opportunities for players to hone their skills against high-quality opposition. Without the necessary infrastructure and resources, it becomes challenging for Asian teams to compete at the same level as their global counterparts. The level of competition a team regularly faces has a profound impact on its development. Strong competition exposes players to different playing styles, strategies, and skill sets, ultimately contributing to their growth. Many Asian countries struggle to consistently engage in high-intensity international matches due to the regional distribution of basketball prowess. In contrast, European and American teams often benefit from participating in competitive leagues and tournaments, where they face off against other basketball powerhouses. This exposure enhances their ability to adapt to different game scenarios and raises the overall skill level of their players. For Asian teams, limited exposure to high-level competition hinders their ability to refine their gameplay and compete effectively on the global stage. Gilas Pilipinas, for one, was hounded by player availability issues, not to mention injuries in its build-up to the World Cup. A young team composed of the best talents outside of the Philippine Basketball Association was once formed and earned accolades even from the harshest of critics as the young guns turned the tables twice on a South Korean squad in the qualifiers. The youthful squad would have by now made an impact in the World Cup, but sadly, poaching by other Asian leagues of its members has decimated Gilas Pilipinas, leaving the coaching staff no choice but to turn to Philippine Basketball Association players to shore up its bid. While it is evident that Asian teams, including the Philippines, have struggled to advance beyond the qualification round in the FIBA World Cup, attributing this solely to a deficiency in skill, however, would be unfair and simplistic. Historical context, infrastructure, competition levels, and cultural factors all contribute to the performance disparity. Add to this size, which Asians do not have in a sport that requires a lot of it. Rather than viewing Asia as lagging behind its global counterparts, it is more constructive probably to recognize the progress that has been made and the challenges that persist. Asian countries are working tirelessly to bridge the gap, investing in grassroots programs, coaching education, and infrastructure development. As these efforts bear fruit over time, we may witness a more competitive landscape in international basketball, where Asian teams can compete on a more level playing court. Tourney teaches architecture students design innovation
Housing design standards are growing more complex and demanding every year. The current 6.5 million housing backlog is adding to the complexity of the problem, with housing demand expected to balloon to 22.6 million units by the end of 2040. [caption id="attachment_175348" align="aligncenter" width="1157"] (From left) Benilde students Brigett Mae Domingo, Victoria Marice Cumpas, and Andrew Benidick Oliver present their output to architect Carlos Joselito Gutierrez during their consultations.[/caption] To address the growing needs, architects continuously improve their design to address issues of proper land use and the cost of housing units. “Currently, the challenge is the realization of working on limited space,” said Architect Carlos Joselito Gutierrez who’s also an educator. “But this is the essence of service learning. It is not easy for them, but they are learning that this is the reality we must work with as designers.” Property developer PHINMA Properties has teamed up with the Architecture Program of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde — School of Environment and Design to challenge architecture students to create innovative and sustainable living design solutions. At least 80 students, divided into 21 teams, were tasked to submit a schematic proposal for three housing typologies for the middle-class population: 50-square-meter lot townhouses, 80 sqm and 125 sqm single attached homes. The groups were split into seven units for three field categories and competed for three slots in each area designation. They were briefed on the corporate mission, project portfolio, target market, general design guidelines and the typical subdivision outline to understand the requirements and assist them in coming up with drafts that address the market’s needs. The class is currently studying the ARHOUSE or HOUSING. This three-unit lecture-based course aims to widen the perspective of the different settings and conditions of the Philippine shelter programs. With the understanding that they are dealing with Filipino-designed residences of which feasibility is an increasing consideration, Gutierrez shared that this serves as a good training exposure for the artistic Benildeans. “Service learning is seen as an essential part of growth for architecture students,” he stated. “They will experience how it is to work with real-life situations.” Nine groups will be shortlisted by the esteemed panel of experts and professionals from PHINMA Properties based on their compliance with the class conditions, innovation, buildability, ecological and sustainability impact, and functionality aesthetics after their first submission round. “PHINMA Properties’ mission revolves around reshaping the urban landscape, fostering community building and embracing the bayanihan spirit in all our designs,” president and CEO of PHINMA Properties Raphael B. Felix said. “We challenged participants in the competition to keep this vision in mind, aiming to create designs that renew the urban landscape, promote sustainability and forge stronger community bonds.” “We aspire to embark on more projects and collaborations, not only in house architecture but also in urban planning and energy efficiency,” he furthered. “We believe there are countless aspects to explore and tap into the youth’s ideas and support them into reality.” SED Dean Architect Dottie Asela Domingo likewise emphasized the valuable opportunity for both parties that underpin this collaboration. “With the meeting of minds, we learn from each other and dare to come up with new ideas and design concepts.” “The industry players have the tested knowledge from professional practice,” she said. “The students, on the other hand, have unbridled creativity, as we allow their youthful energy, imagination and passionate ideals to be explored to create new human-centered design solutions to existing environmental problems.” The finalists will be meticulously screened anew by PHINMA Properties officials at PHINMA Plaza in Rockwell Center, Makati City, for another demonstration this month. Designer Jie -jie Aisa on muse Nikki de Moura
So far, the city of Cagayan de Oro in Mindanao has produced two beauties of international caliber: Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach and Miss InterContinental 2021 Cinderella Faye Elle “Cindy” Obeñita. Hoping to make it a Beauty Queen Trinity is Nikki Advincula de Moura, the newly crowned Miss Grand Philippines who will compete for the global title in Vietnam come October. [caption id="attachment_173643" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Miss Grand Philippines 2023 Nikki de Moura, wearing a terno by Jie-jie Aisa, in front of the Saint Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral in Cagayan de Oro. | Photograph Courtesy of James Paculba.[/caption] There are great expectations that De Moura, who is of exquisite mix of Brazilian and Filipino blood, will finally snatch the elusive Miss Grand International crown. Helping her to achieve this feat is her glam team from Cebu and her beauty camp in her native CDO. At the national finals, De Moura wore a creation by Eclectic Image Fashion Studio by Jie-jie Aisa for the national costume competition. It was called “Oportunidad de Oro” or “Golden Opportunities,” inspired by the city’s mythical golden fish which is believed to be its protector. It was one of the top five in the category. For her homecoming after her victory, De Moura once again wore a Jie-jie Aisa creation. “The gown beautifully blends two symbolic colors — green, representing unity and #KaubanTaUY, and gold, paying homage to CDO’s renowned title as the City of Golden Friendship,” the designer noted. “A true embodiment of grace and local pride, Nikki shines bright during her homecoming motorcade, capturing hearts of Kagay-anons and embodying the essence of this remarkable city. Thank you to LGU-CDO headed by Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy for making this possible.” Incidentally, the bustling city is in the midst of celebrating its Higalaay Festival, a major highlight of which is the Mindanao Fashion Summit from 23 to 25 August at the Ayala Centrio Mall. As the president of the Designer’s Assembly, Jie-jie will lead his group’s presentation on the second day, 24 August. “As the president, my key duties and responsibilities encompass leading and guiding the organization’s strategic direction, fostering a collaborative environment among budding designers, overseeing project initiatives, coordinating events and workshops and representing the interests of our members within the design community,” the genial designer said. “I am dedicated to ensuring the growth and success of our group by nurturing creativity, facilitating skill development and promoting meaningful engagement within the design industry.” On the eve of the 12th Mindanao Fashion Summit, the designer, who considers Gil Macaiba III, the late Benjie S. Manuel and Cary Santiago as influences, recounts his collaborative relationship with his muse, De Moura. Origins “My acquaintance with Nikki de Moura developed through mutual connections within the fashion and pageant industry. Our paths crossed after a local beauty camp in Cebu City introduced her to our camp in Cagayan de Oro City, the #TeamAmega. Since I am the official designer of our beauty camp, I had the opportunity to design her creative national costume as well as her outfits during her homecoming. “The idea of a creative collaboration for her gowns/outfits emerged organically from recognizing the synergy between our camp’s visions, we jointly initiated the collaboration, fueled by a shared passion for crafting unique and captivating ensembles that would resonate with her style and my design expertise.” Muse “Nikki exemplifies the essence of a stunning Jie-jie Aisa muse through her remarkable blend of grace, confidence and distinctive style. Her ability to effortlessly carry both traditional and contemporary ensembles reflects the dynamic spirit of the Jie-jie Aisa brand. Nikki’s poise and fashion-forward sensibilities resonate with the brand’s commitment to celebrating cultural heritage while embracing modern aesthetics. As a local fashion designer, collaborating with such a muse has been an inspiring journey, elevating my creations to new heights of elegance and sophistication.” Collaborations “Throughout the collaboration between myself as a local fashion designer and Nikki, we found common ground in our enthusiasm for integrating indigenous design elements into the collection. However, there were nuanced differences in our visions, particularly concerning the color palette’s vibrancy and the extent of embellishments. By fostering open dialogue and embracing a spirit of mutual respect, we arrived at a compromise that elegantly balanced the client’s preference for a more subdued palette with my inclination for bolder accents. This harmonious negotiation resulted in a collection that seamlessly reflects both Nikki’s refined taste and my artistic perspective.” Pride “I am immensely proud of Nikki’s accomplishments, both as Miss Teen Philippines 2019 and more recently as Miss Grand Philippines 2023. These achievements reflect not only her individual dedication and perseverance but also the embodiment of our nation’s beauty, talent and grace on esteemed platforms. Nikki’s success brings honor not just to herself but also to the Philippines, and it is a privilege to have contributed to my journey as a local fashion designer. Her victories inspire me to continue creating designs that complement and enhance the remarkable qualities of individuals like Nikki.” Preparations “From our perspective, the entire #TeamAmega is wholeheartedly committed to providing unwavering support to Nikki during her time in Vietnam. As for her national costume, we are awaiting confirmation from the Miss Grand Philippines Organization regarding my potential involvement in designing her ensemble. Rest assured we are eagerly prepared to contribute our expertise to ensure her representation is nothing short of exceptional.” Challenges “As a designer, crafting pageant gowns presents a unique set of challenges that require a delicate balance between artistic expression and meeting specific criteria. Ensuring that the gown captures the contestant’s individuality while aligning with the pageant’s theme and standards demands meticulous attention to detail. “Additionally, incorporating elements that reflect cultural authenticity and modern aesthetics requires thoughtful navigation. The challenge lies in harmonizing these diverse aspects to create a gown that not only enhances the contestant’s beauty and confidence but also makes a lasting impression on the judges and audience.” “Working with beauty queens brings its own distinct dynamic compared to designing for everyday women. Beauty queens possess a heightened sense of stage presence and a requirement for gowns that accentuate their elegance under the spotlight. The meticulous attention to fit, silhouette and materials is magnified.” The post Designer Jie -jie Aisa on muse Nikki de Moura appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Wonder women
It’s been a special week for Filipina athletes. The Blu Girls made a strong run in the XVII Women’s Softball World Cup while the Filipinas posted a historic triumph in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Oft-ignored in a country that is crazy over basketball, boxing, and volleyball, the Filipina clouters opened their campaign with three straight losses to Canada, Japan and Venezuela before finally winning over New Zealand and Italy to gain a slight chance of barging into the final round. But in a battle of survival, the Blu Girls fell short. The scores were tied at 5 in the fourth inning when Italy surged again by sending Alessandra Rotondo home. The Blu Girls tried to launch a final attempt to retake the lead but Cristy Joy Roa was struck out by the airtight Italian defense. The Blu Girls missed a chance to vie in the finals next year as they ended their campaign in fourth place with a 2-4 win-loss card. Still, it was a solid performance considering the high level of competition at this prestigious event held at the Campo Comunale da Softball in Castions di Strada, Italy. Around 18,000 kilometers from Italy, the Filipinas were making the country proud in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Sarina Bolden, a 27-year-old daughter of an American father and a Filipino mother from California, soared high to connect a header right into the heart of the Kiwi defense that served as the country’s first-ever goal in the World Cup. Then, another Filipino-American in Olivia McDaniel repeatedly extinguished numerous Kiwi attacks to preserve the victory that shook the entire football world to its very foundation. Although international media had put an asterisk on the victory for having all but one foreign-born player in the 24-woman roster, the fact remains that they wouldn’t be donning the national colors in the biggest, grandest stage of football in the world if they were not emotionally attached to their homeland. Bolden put it nicely. Being part of the Filipinas is their only way to reconnect with their roots. It is their way to pay homage to their Filipino ancestors who molded them into what they are right now. The success of the women should serve as a challenge to the men. Gilas Pilipinas is also competing in a world-class event — the FIBA Basketball World Cup. But it is facing the huge challenge of forming a solid team with barely a month before the prestigious 32-nation event kicks off on 25 August. Injuries have hampered the formation of the Gilas squad. Gilas coach Chot Reyes had yet to set up the team when Carl Tamayo withdrew, saying that he needed to rest following a grueling campaign in Japan. Then, the injury bug hounded the team with RR Pogoy, Ray Parks and Calvin Oftana all failing to join the first training camp at Inspire Sports Academy in Laguna due to various ailments. Gilas left for Europe with an incomplete roster. But before they could go home, Scottie Thompson crashed with a finger injury, raising fears that he would no longer be available for the biggest basketball showpiece in the world. Worse, Gilas’s biggest marquee players — Jordan Clarkson and Kai Sotto — have yet to see a single minute of playing time with their Gilas teammates. Clarkson was supposed to arrive six weeks before the World Cup. But his negotiations with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas stalled until he finally agreed to show up on 6 August, barely three weeks before the competition. Sotto, for his part, has a different story. After joining the National Basketball Association Summer League, the 7-foot-3 slotman flew to Manila, not to join Gilas, but to rest and recover from the back injury that he suffered in the United States. It took a week before he finally signed with Gilas, but there’s still no clarity as to when he will formally join the training. As of Saturday, Sotto, idolized by millions of Filipinos for being their brightest hope to represent them in the NBA, has yet to see a single second on the floor with the national team. With the way things are going, it seems that the country’s hosting of the World Cup is a disaster waiting to happen. The best players in the world are all set to compete but the Filipino “superstars” appear to be finding a lot of excuses to shun the huge responsibility of representing the country. Gilas should be inspired by the feats of the Blu Girls and the Filipinas. In a nation where softball and football fans are in the minority, these wonder women overcame great adversities and made great sacrifices just to play their hearts out and bring pride and glory to the country. Never mind if they can’t speak fluent Filipino or are being bashed for being the “Team B” of the United States. The mere fact that they are playing in a world-class event with the Philippine flag on their chests without conditions, without excuses is already a testament to their patriotism and burning desire to make the country proud. Indeed, strong women will always be men’s secret weapons. The post Wonder women appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
