Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle emphasized on Saturday that life was a gift from God as he appealed to the Catholic faithful to value the lives of their enemies and even society's so-called outcasts.   Around 2,000 Catholics marched solemnly at Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park to protest against moves to legalize divorce and change the 1987 Constitution, as well as the Duterte administration's bloody war on drugs.   In his homily during the "Walk for Life" prayer rally, an event replicated across the country, including the major cities of Cebu, Davao and Cagayan de Oro, the prelate said Filipinos should value life even if it had gone astray.   "L...Keep on reading: Tagle leads Catholic rally vs divorce, EJKs.....»»

Conley leads late rally as Grizzlies defeat Portland 92-83

By Clay Bailey, Associated Press MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Mike Conley scored 23 points and keyed a fourth-quarter outburst as the Memphis Grizzlies pulled away for a 92-83 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night (Thursday, PHL time). Jaren Jackson Jr. finished with 14 points, and MarShon Brooks added 13 as the Grizzlies snapped a two-game losing streak. C.J. McCollum matched his season high with 40 points, while Damian Lillard was held to a season-low 14 points, connecting on only 4-of-18 shots. The Trail Blazers' 83 points were a season low. Portland had pulled within 79-78 on a reverse layup by Lillard with 5:27 left. But Memphis rattled off 13 straight points, including eight by Conley, stretching the lead to a game-high 14 points at 92-78, and the Grizzlies coasted home. Neither team shot particularly well, but Lillard's misfires contributed to the Trail Blazers shooting 38 percent. Memphis led 42-40 after a spirited first half that included jawing between players and coaches complaining to officials. Portland held an early 11-point lead, but a strong second quarter from Memphis that included a 17-2 rally erased the advantage. Neither team was shooting well - both at 36 percent - and that included three-point range, where the teams were a combined 6-of-27. TIP-INS Trail Blazers: Maurice Harkless did not play, sitting out the game for rest. ... Portland is in the midst of playing three games in four nights. ... McCollum missed all five of his three-pointers in Tuesday's (Wednesday, PHL time) loss to Houston. And he missed two more before connecting from long range late in the second quarter. That was only the second three-pointer in the half for Portland. ... Lillard, the league's fourth-leading scorer, has reached double figures in every game this season. Grizzlies: Coach J.B. Bickerstaff drew a technical in the first quarter when he complained about a no-call he believed was goaltending. ... Marc Gasol started 2-of-11 from the field, and ended the game 4-of-15. ... The Grizzlies have held all but three opponents this season under their scoring average, including the Trail Blazers, who entered the game averaging 112 points a game. UP NEXT Trail Blazers: Host Toronto on Friday (Saturday, PHL time). Grizzlies: Host the Miami Heat on Friday (Saturday, PHL time)......»»

PBA: Hotshots take commanding 2-0 lead in Manila Clasico

Two-time champion Brgy. Ginebra is officially down for the count. No. 4 Magnolia landed another haymaker Monday, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup semifinals following a 101-97 win over the Gin Kings in Game 2 at the Big Dome. Surviving a late flurry from the Gin Kings, the Hotshots are now one win away from the Finals and ending Ginebra's two-year reign in the Governors' Cup. Similar to Game 1, the Hotshots were in control for most of the game, frustrating the Gin Kings and making them play their game. Magnolia took multiple double-digit leads and had an answer for Ginebra anytime the champs tried to mount a rally. The Gin Kings only really had it going in the fourth after head coach Tim Cone was ejected for a pair of technical fouls. Ginebra cut the deficit down to just three points with 24 seconds to go but LA Tenorio and Justin Brownlee each missed game-tying triples. Romeo Travis then scored one free throw on the other end to seal the final tally.   The Scores: Magnolia 101 - Travis 25, Sangalang 17, Lee 14, Dela Rosa 11, Barroca 9, Jalalon 8, Reavis 6, Melton 5, Simon 5, Herndon 1. Ginebra 97 - Brownlee 31, Tenorio 15, Aguilar 15, Slaughter 14, Thompson 7, Mercado 7, Mariano 4, Chan 2, Caguioa 2, Ferrer 0. Quarters: 21-18, 47-46, 75-68, 101-97.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Speaking of winning seven straight games, the Bolts have won seven straight semis games in the Governors' Cup semifinals since 2016. The Bolts were relentless right from the start, turning to their signature defense to frustrate Alaska. Meralco took multiple 16-point leads throughout the game which turned out to be beneficial as the Aces tried to mount a last-minute rally in the fourth. PVL: Valdez fights through ankle pain, leads Cool Smashers back in win column

Alyssa Valdez played through pain in her right ankle to power Creamline past Tacloban, 25-16, 25-16, 26-24, and return in the win column Wednesday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. The Cool Smashers star limped out of the court in the second set before heroically returning in the third to carry her team from a 19-23 deficit to a resounding sweep as Creamline improved to a 7-2 win-loss record, tied with BanKo at second spot behind Ateneo-Motolite (9-2). Valdez finished with game-high 17 points off 10 attacks, five aces and a couple of kill blocks laced with 11 digs for the Cool Smashers, who recovered from a five-set loss to the Lady Eagles two weeks ago. Valdez said that she felt pain in her foot as early as the opening set after a bad landing. She played through pain until midway in the second set before subbing out.   With her team down, 10-15, in the third Valdez returned to action and immediately scored an attack to rally her team to an amazing fightback. Pau Soriano sparked Creamline’s run in the closing stretch of the third set, scoring on quick attack before Valdez pounded back-to-back hits to cut their deficit to 22-23. Jovielyn Prado answered with a kill to put the Fighting Warays at match point before Alina Bicar sent her service short that tied the frame at 24. Valdez again smashed consecutive attacks before Jia Morado wrapped up the win with an ace to end the one-hour, 22-minute match. Tacloban fell to its third straight loss to slide back with a 4-7 card. Dimdim Pacres finished with nine points while Prado, Bicar and Heather Guino-o scored six each for the Fighting Warays.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Federer wins 99th title, beats Copil in Swiss Indoors final

BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Roger Federer won his 99th career ATP tour title on Sunday, beating qualifier Marius Copil 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the Swiss Indoors final. A ninth title at Federer's hometown event in Basel, where he was once a ball boy, matched the nine he has won at the Halle grass-court event in Germany. He closed the gap on the all-time singles titles list to Jimmy Connors, who leads with 109. Federer blew kisses to a 12,000 crowd in the renovated St. Jakobhalle, which now gives Basel's local hero a bigger main stage. "It's been a magical week. It was dream run for me," Federer said in his on-court acceptance speech, before his fans' ovation brought tears welling in his eyes. "To come through and win again here in my hometown, never knowing if this might be your last time ... it obviously means a lot to me and it becomes very emotional," he said later. The top-seeded Swiss rallied from trailing by a service break in each set against the 93rd-ranked Romanian, whose serve was measured at 243 kph (151 mph) in his opening service game. Federer clinched minutes after saving a break point, taking his first match-point chance when Copil sent a backhand into the net. The title was the 37-year-old Federer's first in more than four months since winning on grass at Stuttgart in June. Federer's 151st singles final on the ATP tour shaped as one of his biggest mismatches by ranking. He has never lost a final to an opponent ranked below No. 87. Their first meeting came after Federer amassed 20 Grand Slam singles titles, while Copil has just one career match win at a Grand Slam — in the 2015 Australian Open first round. The 28-year-old Copil came to Basel with career prize money — $1.67 million — significantly less than Federer earned just for winning the Australian Open in January. His second career runner-up finish, both this season, earned almost 210,000 euros ($239,000). Copil, currently ranked No. 93, will rise to a career-best ranking of No. 60 when the new list is published Monday. "I would love for it to be the beginning of my career at this level," said Copil, who played his first tour-level match in 2009. The first-set tiebreaker was likely to be crucial given Copil's career record of 8-52 when losing the opening set in top-tier matches. Federer got a mini-break in the seventh point, being rewarded for solid defense from the baseline when Copil netted an attempted drop shot. After Copil saved two set points with big serves, Federer took the first on his own serve when his opponent sent a forehand long. Federer celebrated with a shout and a pump of his right fist. In the second set, Copil again quickly broke serve and this time held the key fifth game when Federer had two break points. It was a brief respite until Federer broke in Copil's next service game despite the Romanian ending one long rally with a backhand lob for a winner......»»
