House panel forms TWG to harmonize bills on tax rates of alcoholic drinks

        The House of Representatives panel on Tuesday approved the creation of a technical working group (TWG) to harmonize the two bills seeking to increase and restructure the excise tax rates on alcoholic beverages. At the fourth hearing of the ways and means committee, AAMBIS-OWA Rep. Sharon Garin moved for the creation of a TWG to reconcile House Bill (HB) Nos. 8286 and 4839. The panel consequently approved it without objections. The two bills seek to amend Sections 141, 142 and 143 of Republic Act No. 8424, otherwise known as the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997. Meralco rates up slightly in August

Residential customers of Manila Electric Co. will see higher overall rates in their bill for August, partly due to the increased cost of fuel that contract suppliers use. Meralco yesterday said overall charges were going up by 2.65 centavos a kilowatt-hour, which means that a typical residential customer that consumes 200 kWh a month will pay an additional P5 for this month's power consumption. For the August billing, the utility giant's overall charge is going up to P10.219 a kWh from P10.1925 in the June billing. The generation charge alone went up to by 8.4 centavos to P5.3491 a kWh from P5.2651 in July. House panel okays bill imposing tax hike on cigarettes

LEGAZPI CITY--- The House of Representatives's ways and means comittee has approved House Bill 4575 which seeks to increase the tax imposed on cigarettes, Albay 2nd District Representative Joey Salceda said Thursday. Salceda, the author of the bill, said that if the bill becomes law, the tax on cigarettes will be raised to P35 per pack starting this year. This is expected to be raised further to P37.50 per pack in 2019 and is expected to contribute an additional P8 billionrevenue to the government. Salceda said that by 2020, the tax on cigarettes will have been raised to P40 per pack, which will result in a P16-billion revenue for the government.
