Swift stays on top but ‘Flower Moon’ impresses on North America screens
The new Taylor Swift concert movie held on to the top spot in North American theaters this weekend, but the history-based crime epic "Killers of the Flower Moon" had an impressive debut -- the best for a Martin Scorsese film since 2010. "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," distributed by AMC Theaters, took in an estimated $31 million for the Friday-through-Sunday period, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations said Sunday. That pushed the two-week domestic total for the film, which includes scenes from three of the pop superstar's concerts to $129.8 million. It is now the only concert film ever to top the box office for two straight weekends, Variety reported. Meantime, Scorsese's new film had a strong debut -- particularly given its three-and-a-half-hour runtime, its upcoming release on streamer Apple TV+, and the inability of stars Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio to promote it as the actors' strike continues -- taking in $23 million. "Reviews and audience scores are superb," said analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. MPW seeks swift Basilan core shelter project completion
LAMITAN CITY — Contractors of core shelter housing units in Basilan province have started to speed up their works after the suppliers of pre-cast steel materials used in framing the sections of the homes have started to arrive in the province. Ministry of Public Works Basilan District Engineer Kasim Hasanin on Friday said that they are now fast-tracking to complete 300 core shelter housing units by the end of the year. “Materials to be used in the construction of the 1,000 uniformed core shelter housing project have started to arrive and we are fast-tracking the fabrication of precast section frame of the houses,” said Hasanin. “Construction workers have already completed fabricating about 400 section frames of the houses and are ready to install in it in identified areas of the province,” he added. The MPW district engineer also disclosed that they are still waiting for the walling materials as the supplier has not yet shipped it to the province. “We already have about 100 core shelter homes completed and ready to award to the beneficiary of the program,” said Hasanin, adding that the slow delivery of steel materials by the supplier they use in fabricating the sections of the houses was the primary cause of the project’s delay. ‘Anak Datu’ opens a rush of truth from ripples of trauma
A year after it premiered, Anak Datu is returning to the stage, opening the 37th season of Tanghalang Pilipino, the resident theater company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. When it debuted, it immediately became a landmark production in several ways. It was one of the first plays to be mounted with a live audience after the lockdowns and restrictions of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and 2021. And it was the first play to be staged at the newly opened CCP Black Box Theater or Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez. Anak Datu is one of the few plays on the Tausug and Moro people and cultures of Mindanao, portrayed with marked sensitivity and apparent diligence. It was lauded by critics and audiences, with former Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo as one of the prominent people who trooped to CCP to watch the play on 1 October 2022. The play went on to win six awards at the 13th Gawad Buhay and five at the 35th Aliw Awards. [caption id="attachment_192618" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] the tausug pangalay dance is incorporated into the play.[/caption] Fine-tuned production Despite the accolades and being one of the most important theatrical events in 2022, the play was faulted by some for what was seen as its confusing storytelling, its shifts in timeline and milieus, and the cumbersome sets. The second staging afforded the creative team the opportunity to fine-tune these and other aspects of the production. According to director Chris Millado, former CCP vice president and artistic director, they were able to make the storytelling clearer and supply an elevated platform to make the designs of the light projections more visible. For Dennis N. Marasigan, current CCP vice president and artistic director, “[o]n its rerun, Tanghalang Pilipino's Anak Datu is tighter, its storytelling and technical aspects clearer and crisper, and its staging even more affecting, effectively overlaying story, myth and history.” The restaging marks another milestone in the journey of the play, which started in 2018 from talks that artist Toym Imao, son of the late National Artist for visual arts Abdulmari Asia Imao, had with Millado and veteran actor and TP artistic director Fernando “Nanding” Josef about making a stage adaptation of the elder Imao’s short story for children, written in 1968, the year Toym was born. The team recruited award-winning playwright Rody Vera to write the script. The plan became more concrete when Josef decided to make the project TP’s first original play after the pandemic lockdowns. By then, the play has evolved into something larger than the original story. Serving as Anak Datu’s set designer, Imao recalled the anxieties they felt during the first stages of production, especially the prospect of one of them getting sick and shutting down the show. “But we were able to tell an essential story that was important, especially for a nation that was coming out of the devastating election of May 2022 for a lot of people. It is something important for us na nakapagkuwento kami (we were able to tell a story),” he said. [caption id="attachment_192619" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Ramli Abdurahim as the pirate Jikiran.[/caption] Three stories Anak Datu tells three stories — Toym’s childhood with his father (Paul Jake Paule) and mother, Grace de Leon (Toni Go-Yadao); his father’s short story; and the recent history of his father’s people, the Muslim Tausug in Sulu Archipelago and the Moro, the collective Muslim ethnic groups, of Mindanao. The Imao family portion shows Toymie (Carlos Dala) growing up with Voltes V and other preoccupations of middle-class children in Metro Manila. Then there is the story of the disputed 1968 Jabidah Massacre, told through Jibin Arula (Gie Onida), the lone survivor — how young Tausug men, mostly illiterate, were recruited by the military, transferred to Corregidor and then massacred upon the discovery of a suspicious plot. Also dramatized is the 1974 Palimbang Massacre, in which the military allegedly murdered more a thousand Moro men inside the Malisbong masjid in the province of Sultan Kudarat, while 3,000 women and children were detained and about 300 homes were burned down. These incidents were said to have sparked the conflicts and armed struggle in Mindanao that would scar the region for decades. Along with the contemporary scenes is the retelling of the short story Anak Datu, set in a pre-colonial time and rendered in mythical mode, combining both the familial and the tragic. The Tausug village of datu Karim (Hassanain Magarang) and his wife Putli Loling (Tex Ordoñez-De Leon and Lhorvie Nuevo) is attacked by pirates, led by Jikiran (Ramli Abdurahim), who kidnaps the pregnant Putli Loling. She gives birth to Karim, who grows up knowing Jikiran as his father but later learns the truth. Counterbalancing the oral storytelling is the dramatization through graceful movements, choregraphed by Magarang using the pangalay or Tausug traditional dance, a shared art form with the Yakan (pamansak) and Sama (igal) peoples, thus rendering the stories more visual and adding allure and distinctive cultural flavor to the play. The dances are accompanied by a live kulintangan or gong ensemble. The stark interiors of the theater come alive and burst with colors courtesy of the lighting by Katsch Catoy and projection design of GA Fallarme, who uses Abdulmari Imao’s paintings and traditional Tausug and Meranaw motifs such as the okir as inspirations. Toym’s set pieces are highly movable to keep up with the constant shifts in storytelling, and the bigger ones are like art installations, contributing to the visual richness of the production. Harnessing memory, myth and history, Anak Datu is able to weave its stories into an enthralling whole, establishing interconnectedness and consolidating the story of a person, a family and a community into the very story of a nation, like three or more streams converging into a great river. REVIEW: ‘HAMILTON’ — Astonishing stagecraft
“Hamilton,” Lin-Manuel Miranda’s rap musical about the eponymous Founding Father, has finally landed in Manila — the first stop of a new international tour that replicates the exact production currently running on Broadway and London’s West End. This is, in other words, essentially the same production that’s won every major theater award conceivable in the West, and whose live stage recording released on Disney+ three years ago was a global success among Covid-captive home viewers. You wouldn’t immediately know all that, however, just from watching this production: Even as it brims with dazzling theatricality and refreshing erudition, it also feels surprisingly small, rid of its status as a phenomenon, pared down to human size. It’s a show that’s almost oblivious to its own celebrity, even as entrance applause (erupting to diminishing returns) dotted the first 15 minutes of its 21 September gala performance at The Theatre at Solaire. Instead, it knows when to build up to the big musical moments, which are few and far between, and does so organically and therefore quite satisfyingly. The logical progression of the narrative and individual character drama — the musical’s unassailable structural precision — are rendered very clear; put bluntly, it is a storytelling apologist’s wettest dream. Never mind that the musical itself — evidently a product of modern-day liberalism, the politics of the American Dream made manifest through the eyes of 21st-century immigrants — is by now indivisible from the very valid criticisms it has received from many corners of American scholarly thought. For the uninitiated, Hamilton tells through rap the rise of the Founding Fathers, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, as they built America in the latter half of the 18th century. Admittedly, given what we know now and what we’ve been through since the musical premiered in New York in 2015, it feels weird, to say the least, to be watching a show that hero-worships to varying degrees the likes of Washington, Jefferson and Hamilton — all products of and complicit to the sins of their time. Moreover, the way the musical intentionally casts non-white actors to play these historically white figures (and slavers) can, depending on how one looks at it, come across as a stroke of meta subversion or “revisionist and insulting nonsense,” to quote one critic. Unique brilliance Again — all valid criticisms, which some have suggested are actually part of the musical’s unique brilliance. Watching the musical (through this particular production) in Manila, however, you entertain those thoughts mainly in retrospect. Inside the theater, it’s all those aforementioned merits — and more! — that surround you: a show that’s so technically precise in ways that highlight the material’s inventiveness, a feast of astonishing stagecraft, a display of just how good musical theater can get when given vast resources. [caption id="attachment_187901" align="aligncenter" width="1148"] DeAundre’ Woods as Aaron Burr. | photograph courtesy of IG/dre_woods[/caption] Despite the title, the crux of this production is DeAundre’ Woods’ Aaron Burr (Hamilton’s archrival, if you will). It’s a performance for which the phrase “no notes” seems to have been coined. Whenever Woods disappears from the stage, you look for him. But, more importantly, the genius of Woods’ performance is in how it becomes the anchor through which the musical itself can be better understood: as a story of wanting and longing, a warning against the folly of ambition, a morality tale run parallel to the uncertainty and messiness of nation-building. When Woods sings (and brings down the house with) Burr’s first big solo “Wait for It,” you instantly comprehend the song — and, for that matter, the musical. Arguably, Burr is the central and meatiest role here. Next to Woods’ interpretation, however, the smallness and silliness inherent to the story Hamilton tells become all the more coherent. You grasp how Hamilton and his posse were essentially just kids bumbling their way through a revolution. It’s all very grand on paper, but it’s also a journey chockfull of pettiness and foolishness — and on that stage, a history lesson that revels in its occasionally juvenile, highly accessible nature. [caption id="attachment_187906" align="aligncenter" width="1512"] DARNELL Abraham as George Washington. | photographs courtesy of ig/darnell abraham[/caption] [caption id="attachment_187900" align="aligncenter" width="1348"] BRENT Hill as King George. | photographs courtesy of ig/darnell abraham[/caption] Dreamcasting Elsewhere, this is a production that’s supplied with all the right parts — but, on a local stage as technologically impressive as the Theatre at Solaire (the best acoustics in Metro Manila, hands down), it also invites “dreamcasting” — permitting you to imagine in real time how certain Filipino theater performers cast in certain roles would, without a doubt, totally slay those parts. No matter: As it is, this Hamilton is one that lives up to the hype surrounding its supposed brilliance — while simultaneously earning that reputation before a live audience night after night. Among others spots of pure artistry, it has a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it onstage costume change involving the terrific ensemble early in Act I, a historical battle conjured through frenzied dance, and entire scene changes and moments evoked simply through the deliberate arrangement of performers’ bodies (that climactic bullet scene, anyone?). In lieu of an arduous and expensive trip to New York or London, this production more than does the job. Hamilton runs at the Theatre at Solaire, Pasay City, until 26 November. Family Matters won big at the 39th Luna Awards held Saturday night, 26 August, at the Quezon City Sports Club. The family drama produced by Cineko Productions Inc. was named Best Picture by the award-giving body made up of the Film Academy of the Philippines and supported by the Movie Workers Welfare Foundation Inc. Its cast members Noel Trinidad and Mylene Dizon bagged the trophies for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, while production designer Elfren Vibar got his own award in his category. “Nakuha sa dasal, kaya thank you, Lord,” Trinidad said in his acceptance speech. “I want to share this award sa lahat na-involve sa pelikula. Para na rin kaming isang pamilya talaga. Nagmamahalan, may tampuhan.” He then thanked director Nuel Naval and screenplay writer Mel Mendoza-Del Rosario. The 82-year-old actor, who plays the patriarch of a family worried sick about him and his wife (Liza Lorena), added, “Shini-share ko ang award na ito sa lahat ng actors at actresses na nakaeksena ko na kasama sa pelikula dahil ang gagaling nilang lahat. Kaya bawat eksena na kasama sila, nagiging very challenging and exciting. So, hindi lang para sa ’kin ’to. Sa atin lahat ito.” He also thanked his real-life wife Lally “for supporting me all these years sa lahat ng projects ko. I love you.” Trinidad bested other lead actors Sid Lucero (Reroute), Cesar Montano (Maid in Malacañang), Christian Bables (Mahal Kita, Beksman) and Jerome Ponce (Katips). In the Best Actress category, Heaven Peralejo emerged as the winner for her impressive performance in the thriller Nanahimik ang Gabi. She won over Liza Lorena (Family Matters), Cristine Reyes (Maid in Malacañang), Cindy Miranda (Reroute) and Belle Mariano (An Inconvenient Love). “Thank you so much to FAP for making a kid’s dream come true,” Peralejo said while accepting her award. “Seven years ago, pangarap ko lang po ’to. Ngayon, this is a big thing for me. I love my job so much, and this means a lot. Thank you.” The 23-year-old actress expressed her gratitude to Lauren Dyogi, who heads the Star Magic talent management agency she was under contract with when the offer to do Nanahimik ang Gabi came. She’s now under the care of Viva Artists Agency. She also gave props to her mother Shirley Luanne, a.k.a. “my mommyger,” saying, “I hope I made you proud. Promise, I’ll keep making you proud.” For her part, Dizon bested in the supporting actress category her Family Matters costar Agot Isidro, as well as Beverly Salviejo (Maid in Malacañang), Elizabeth Oropesa (Maid in Malacañang) and Lara Morena (Relyebo). Dizon, who plays a daughter worried about her parents while also busy raising her own family, thanked her movie’s director and screenplay writer “for choosing me to play Fortune.” She then turned to the people behind the Luna Awards. “It’s such a privilege to work in a film like Family Matters po. Maraming salamat po ni-recognize n’yo ang pelikula namin, na akala namin inisip lang namin na maganda ang pelikula namin. Totoo pala.” Best Supporting Actor winner John Arcilla sent his two sisters to accept his award. The internationally acclaimed actor won against Nonie Buencamino (Family Matters), Keempee de Leon (Mahal Kita, Beksman), Vince Tañada (Katips) and Mon Confiado (Nanahimik ang Gabi). The award for Best Director went to Mikhail Red (Deleter), besting Nuel Naval (Family Matters), Perci Intalan (Mahal Kita, Beksman), Darryl Yap (Maid in Malacañang), Vince Tanada (Katips) and Shugo Praico (Nanahimik ang Gabi). For Best Screenplay, Martika Ramirez Escobar (Leonor Will Never Die) prevailed over Mel Mendoza-Del Rosario (Family Matters), Eric Ramos (Mamasapano), Darryl Yap (Maid in Malacañang) and Joaquin Enrico Santos (An Inconvenient Love). The technical awards went to Carlos Mauricio (Best Cinematography, Leonor Will Never Die), Elfren Vibar (Best Production Design, Family Matters), Lawrence Ang (Best Editing, Leonor Will Never Die), Jazz Nicolas and Mikey Amistoso (Best Musical Scoring, Blue Room) and Andrea Idioma (Best Sound Design, Nanahimik ang Gabi). Four special awards were given out in recognition of the outstanding contributions to the cinematic arts and the entertainment industry. Senator Imee Marcos received the Golden Reel Award through her representative, Elizabeth Marcos. Actor Leo Martinez, who also served as FAP director general from 2003 to 2019, accepted the FPJ Lifetime Achievement Award from Mowelfund chairperson and actress Boots Anson-Roa. National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee was given the Manuel de Leon Award for Exemplary Achievements as a writer and an educator. Cinematographer Conrado Baltazar was honored posthumously with the Lamberto Avellana Memorial Award for his timeless works, such as in the classic films Jaguar, Angela Markado, Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang, Insiang and Gumising Ka, Maruja. A leftist party-list representative, one among those who foist their nationalistic pretense, who has been critical of the previous administration’s war on drugs but couldn’t for once slam the communist rebels for their terroristic activities, and always engaged in either wrong or misleading narratives, has once again unleashed a thoughtless and unstudied declaration, poking her finger in the West Philippine Sea dispute vis-a-vis China’s claim that the Philippines had committed to removing the BRP Sierra Madre which has been aground for a long time at the Ayungin Shoal. This time she has targeted former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte for the latter’s alleged silence on the issue in the face of former presidents Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s, Joseph Estrada’s and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s denial of making such a commitment to China. She has cast suspicion on the former maverick President’s and the latter’s daughter’s (Vice President Sara Duterte) alleged non-issuing a denunciation statement against China’s attacking the resupply mission to BRP Sierra Madre and failing to deny having made the aforementioned pledge. In the first place, there is no need to dispute China’s claim because, for one, it has not submitted proof as to the identity of a government official who made such a commitment, and on what occasion and year it was made. For another, assuming a commitment was made by whomsoever, the same could not be undertaken given that the ship in question is in Ayungin Shoal, which is within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines, over which place the latter has sovereign rights under international law and the United Nation Convention on the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS, and therefore it can do whatever it pleases. Moreover, the arbitral ruling handed by the Permanent Arbitration Court has affirmed the Philippines’ sovereign rights’ claim to it while it rejected China’s expansionist claim over the West Philippine Sea — hence, any contrary claim over the use of the same or invocation of whatever commitment made in regard thereto not only has become moot if not irrelevant but — and more importantly no basis in international law. There is no need for FPRRD to issue a statement to deny or dispute China’s claim simply because as aforestated, it has not validated its allegation with any semblance of proof. Moreover, it is irrelevant at this stage owing to the arbitral award. Even if it is relevant, the denial of the existence of such commitment by no less than the current head of state is more than sufficient. Unlike this impertinent lawmaker, FPRRD abhors calling attention to himself. To require the Vice-President to issue a similar denial and a denunciation against China’s assault on the Philippine Coast Guard is redundant, with PBBM having already an official statement on the matter. The lady solon nastily insinuates that FPRRD has been sleeping with the enemy citing instances that she did not particularize forgetting that even if he has developed a friendship with China’s President, his virtual speech before the United Nations, asserting our sovereignty over the West Philippine Sea and his raising the arbitral ruling in a face-to-face dialogue with President Xi Jinping on his first state visit to China spoke eloquently of his position that he is fiercely opposed to China’s unlawful incursions on Philippine waters. This member of the Lower House has also repeated the lie started by some anti-Duterte critics that the latter has described the arbitral ruling as a mere piece of paper. For her education and others. PRRD was describing how China is treating the favorable decision by not only ignoring it but committing repeated acts of aggression against the Philippines. China is demonstrating its rejection of the international arbitral court ruling by treating it as a worthless piece of paper. In other words, it is telling the world that the Philippines may have the decision (paper) but it has control over the territory it has won in the arbitration. ‘Senior High’: Meet the future stars of Phl entertainment
The cast of the upcoming iWantTFC series Senior High stole the spotlight in Sunday’s episode of ASAP Natin ‘To. Andrea Brillantes and Kyle Echarri choreographed a rousing dance routine for the group to the tune of SB19’s number-one single, “Bazinga.” The youth-oriented show boasts a constellation of fresh talents that are set to become the stars of tomorrow. Alongside Brillantes and Echarri are Elijah Canlas (already a multi-award-winning actor), Juan Karlos, Zaijian Jaranilla, Xyriel Manabat, Daniela Stranner, Miggy Jimenez, Gela Atayde and Tommy Alejandrino. They get excellent support from the likes of Sylvia Sanchez, Angel Aquino, Baron Geisler and Mon Confiado. The series stars Brillantes in her triumphant return to primetime television. Dreamscape Entertainment released the official trailer for the show last Friday, offering a glimpse into a mystery-thriller that centers around twin sisters Sky and Luna, both played by Brillantes, and the young students of the upscale school Northford High. A sense of intrigue and anticipation is created by the characters’ intertwined stories as they try to make sense of the puzzling happenings at the school.
