Dark side of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, has undeniably revolutionized various aspects of our lives, from enhancing industry efficiency to providing personalized recommendations. However, as AI continues to evolve, it brings with it a set of challenges and ethical concerns. One of the alarming trends is the use of AI-generated impostors in advertisements, creating a ripple effect that negatively impacts individuals, public trust, and the very fabric of authenticity in our society. The use of AI-generated impostors in advertising has become a growing concern, exemplified by the case of award-winning Hollywood actor Tom Hanks, who complained about a video advertisement he said he had nothing to do with. In this digital age, where AI algorithms can seamlessly replicate the appearance and even the voice of well-known figures, the lines between reality and simulation blur. Advertisements featuring these AI-generated impostors can mislead the audience, leading to unintended consequences. When AI-generated impostors are used in advertisements, the first casualty is the reputation of the individuals being impersonated. In the case of Tom Hanks, a beloved figure in the entertainment industry, the use of his likeness in deceptive advertisements not only damages his personal brand but also creates confusion and mistrust among his fanbase. Fans may find it challenging to distinguish between genuine endorsements and those featuring AI-generated impostors, eroding the authenticity that defines a celebrity’s connection with their audience. The broader consequence of AI-generated impostors in advertising is the erosion of public trust. As consumers become increasingly skeptical of the content they encounter, distinguishing between real and simulated information becomes daunting. This erosion of trust extends beyond the realm of advertising, impacting how people perceive information in general. The pervasive use of AI-generated content contributes to a culture of suspicion and skepticism, hindering meaningful communication and undermining the foundation of a trustworthy society. The use, therefore, of AI-generated impostors raises significant ethical concerns, particularly regarding consent. Celebrities and public figures have a right to control the use of their likeness, and AI-generated content often circumvents these rights. The creation and deployment of AI-generated advertisements featuring impostors may occur without the knowledge or consent of the individuals being impersonated. This not only violates their privacy but also challenges the ethical boundaries of technological advancements. Beyond the immediate impact on individuals and public trust, the prevalence of AI-generated impostors in advertising has cultural and social ramifications. As our interactions with AI become more commonplace, the blurring of authenticity in media content challenges our perception of reality. This distortion can influence societal values and norms, making it imperative to address the ethical implications of AI in advertising to safeguard the integrity of our cultural landscape. To mitigate the adverse effects of AI-generated impostors in advertising, there must first be increased awareness and education about AI-generated content’s existence and potential consequences. This includes educating consumers about the technology and its potential misuse in the advertising landscape. There is a need for stricter regulations governing the use of AI in advertising, especially when it involves the likeness of public figures. Clear guidelines on obtaining consent, disclosing the use of AI-generated content, and enforcing penalties for violations can help protect individuals and maintain the public’s trust. While, indeed, AI holds immense potential to transform various aspects of our lives positively, its misuse, as seen in the case of AI-generated impostors in advertising, poses serious challenges. The negative effects extend beyond individual reputations, impacting public trust, ethical standards, and cultural values. As we navigate this digital era, it is crucial to address these issues proactively through a combination of education, regulation, and ethical considerations. Only through a concerted effort can we ensure that the power of AI is harnessed responsibly, preserving the authenticity and trust that underpins a healthy and vibrant society. Why Marian Rivera has a ‘no English, please’ policy at work
If there’s one thing utterly admirable about Marian Rivera, it is her guts and gumption to say what she wants and to express what she dislikes. Rivera, a consummate actress, has a “no English, please” policy whenever she’s at work – whether it be tapings, photo shoots or other professional activities. Rivera is never in her comfort zone when she hears people conversing in English, openly acknowledging that English is her Waterloo. So when she works, she is most effective when she is not forced to use the King’s language. Another admirable trait of Rivera is her humility. In a recent interview, she almost clammed up when she was told she’s now being called the new TikTok Queen, due to her dance videos that have racked up millions of views and likes. “Hay, parang hindi naman. Nahiya ako bigla. Basta enjoy lang ako” (It doesn’t seem like that. Suddenly I’m shy. I just want to enjoy), she said during her launch as endorser of a medicine brand. [caption id="attachment_192267" align="aligncenter" width="525"] SETH Fedelin[/caption] Seth him free When Seth Fedelin was just starting, his parents were very much alarmed over the constant presence of a young actress in their abode. The actress, seemingly smitten by Fedelin’s charm, would not only drop by to surprise the actor. She’d stay more than long enough to be called a visitor. The parents became so worried as Fedelin’s then-fledgling career was at stake. They were afraid that the actress’ perennial presence would cause their son’s career to falter, that the juvenile love clearly budding at that time would progress into something serious so soon. The parents heaved a sigh of relief when the actress stopped dropping by the actor’s house. Fedelin, the family breadwinner, could finally concentrate on his career. Now, he’s been doing TV projects one after the other. Right on the heels of the actor’s participation in the top-rating drama show Dirty Linen, Fedelin can be seen next playing Oca, a vlogger obsessed with doing pranks, in the thriller Fractured. Among the characters in the series, it’s Fedelin’s Oca that was given a back story: a young man dead set on making himself a popular vlogger so he can send his sister to school. A case of life imitating art? [caption id="attachment_192268" align="aligncenter" width="525"] KAORI Oinuma[/caption] Scene-stealer Kaori Oinuma is living proof that there are no small roles, only small actors. Oinuma appeared in three scenes in A Very Good Girl, topbilled by Kathryn Bernardo and Dolly de Leon. Her scenes lasted no more than one minute each, but they were replete with shock and force, especially her last scene where she was a scene-stealer. Oinuma’s presence in the movie is not something to sneer at, as it necessitated audacity which she displayed in great abundance. Her bewildered character’s interaction with De Leon is truly one of the movie’s highlights. Now we understand why Chie Filomeno, her co-star in the movie, wanted to switch roles with Oinuma. Oinuma is a teen star by way of Pinoy Big Brother Otso. She has since appeared in She’s Into Her, Paradise Island, Tara G and the ongoing iWant TFC series Fractured, with Seth Fedelin and Francine Diaz. She is also one of the first batch of stars under Rise Artists Studio, a talent management arm of ABS-CBN Films. Critically ill
One thing that is very wrong about the local film industry is that we have an abundance of film critics who know next to nothing about movies. While the right to free speech guarantees that even the most doltish person can write about anything (and many of them do in this country), the problem is that there are still many people who can be led to believe in idiocy. Unfortunately, although there are laws that prevent people who have not studied the course and passed the requisite government examination from practicing medicine, law, or engineering (just to name a few), no such legislation prevents the ordinary “tambay sa kanto” from passing judgment on movies based on nothing more than baseless opinions. As a film critic for another major broadsheet, I once attended a film symposium. One kid bewailed what he said was the penchant of our movie makers for the happy ending (no, not the one that you get in shady massage parlors). He particularly zeroed in on the classic Hihintayin Kita Sa Langit. The poseur critic questioned why, after both lead characters died, the last sequence was a fantasy scene wherein they were both “resurrected,” which he opined was “a case of pandering to the masses.” I pointed out to him that that was because the movie was a close adaptation of the 1936 Hollywood classic Wuthering Heights, starring the legends Merle Oberon, Laurence Olivier and David Niven, which had the exact same ending (and which I had already seen, not once, but twice). Red-faced, he made some rambling oratory about the Filipinos’ slavish imitation of Hollywood, before shutting up. And therein lies the rub, to use one of my favorite Shakespearian paraphrases. In this country, anyone who has a laptop and can construct a half-decent sentence, can style himself a movie critic, never mind if all the movies he has seen are those of Tito, Vic and Joey and Vice Ganda. Real film critics work hard at their craft, and know the ins and outs of making a movie. The great Joe Morgenstern is a Pulitzer Prize winner, his film reviews erudite because he was close to many acclaimed producers and had a ringside view of movie making owing to his being the former husband of actress Piper Laurie. The late Andrew Sarris was a professor of film at Columbia University. He was married to Molly Haskell, a fellow film critic who wrote scholarly theses on movies. Francois Truffaut was not only a critic, but a director, screenwriter, actor and producer, and as an auteur, was one of the founders of the French New Wave. Leonard Maltin, famous for the book, Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide (updated yearly), was a journalism graduate of the prestigious New York University and a film lover. Roger Ebert had a master’s degree in writing and was mentored by the best film critics; he eventually received the Pulitzer Prize. I became a film critic because of my unremitting love for movies, which I no doubt got from my late father, Atty. Arturo Topacio Jr., who not only brought me to cinemas weekly since as far as I can remember, but being a film lover himself would patiently explain to me how movies were made, and why he thought a particular scene, or acting, or script, was good or bad. On my own, I have seen thousands of films of all genres, local and international. I own literally thousands of movies on DVD: primitives, silents, contemporary, most of them critical successes. And through Borracho Films, I have produced two critically acclaimed films (Deception and Mamasapano). In the Philippines, I am the only film critic who is a film maker. And while there are many excellent critics around (Butch Francisco being a prime example), there are just as many who are, when it comes to film education, critically ill. ‘Here Lies Love’ co-producer says hit musical may soon be staged in Manila
After conquering Broadway with an all-Filipino cast, Here Lies Love, the musical created by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim about former First Lady Imelda Marcos, may soon be staged in the Philippines. It’s being talked about,” Don Michael H. Mendoza, a co-producer of the Broadway production, told Daily Tribune in an exclusive interview. He recently flew in from the United States for a vacation and to visit some family and friends. [gallery columns="2" size="large" ids="171941,171942"] “The hope is that the first international production will be in Manila. But they’re also considering Sydney. It’s very early in discussions, but there are plans to bring it abroad. We’ll just have to look for the right place that will house the show because the set is so different. It’s more probably like a studio space than a traditional theater.” Mendoza also confirmed having an all-Filipino cast in the planned touring production, hopefully with the current lineup led by Arielle Jacobs (as Imelda), Jose Llana (as Ferdinand Marcos Sr.), Conrad Ricamora (as Ninoy Aquino) and Lea Salonga (in a special guest role as Ninoy’s mother Aurora). “Of course, it depends on where people are at that point of time,” he pointed out. “If they haven’t moved on to other shows, what their schedules are like. So, hopefully… It would be great to bring the whole cast, but it depends on what they’ll have next.” Show vacancies In case of vacancies, the production may audition performers based in the Philippines, like it did before. This led to the question about Mark Bautista, who played Marcos in both the London and Seattle productions of Here Lies Love after it premiered off-Broadway in 2013 at The Public Theater in New York City. Jose Llana, who currently plays Marcos, originated the role off-Broadway. “We auditioned people from the Philippines,” Mendoza said of their casting process for the Broadway staging. “So I’m sure Mark auditioned. He was in high consideration.” The co-producer explained that Mark’s non-inclusion in the current cast doesn’t mean the Filipino singer-actor “won’t be in that later.” He shared the story of a friend of his who was able to join the cast months after auditioning and doing other shows. “It’s a never-say-never situation.” As for Salonga’s limited stay in the show, Mendoza said the Tony winner has another engagement, but “she might come back later down the road. But for now, she’s on until the 19th (of August).” About the unfortunate invasion of Salonga’s privacy in her own dressing room, “Lea handled it really well. The public opinion is on our side. We worked it out,” said Mendoza, adding that the production has tightened its security as a result of the incident. “Like Lea said, a ticket buys you access to the show, that’s it. Meet-and-greets, that’s because they’re nice, not because it’s in the contract. If they do a stage door greeting, that’s out of the goodness of their heart. They’re not contracted to do that, so they don’t have to entertain you after the show.” Positive reception Mendoza, who’s among the “at least 20” co-producers of Here Lies Love (aside from “five lead producers and three to four associate producers”) expressed joy and excitement when talking about how the Fil-Am community and Broadway theatergoers have received the musical. “It’s good, positive,” he said. “People are really enjoying the show. The lifespan of the show is 1945 to 1986, just after the Edsa Revolution. It is fun. It’s an enjoyable show. They liked that they learned something — even the people who really know the story, they also say that they learned something they didn’t know about Imelda or Ninoy or whoever. So, all positive. “The negative things we received are just about content. People [were] worried about watering down what actually happened, but, like I said in the interview, it’s supposed to be entertaining. It’s not a documentary, you know. If it gets you to think about something, we’ve done our job.” He also recalled the stellar opening night last 20 July, with celebrity attendees like actors Drew Barrymore and Daniel Dae Kim, comedian-TV host Stephen Colbert, filmmaker Spike Lee, singer-songwriter Shoshana Bean, hairstylist Frederic Fekkai and fashion icon Anna Wintour. “There were so many people that I heard were there, but I didn’t see them,” he said. But he didn’t miss seeing his fellow co-producers Jo Koy and H.E.R. at the opening. Mendoza said Here Lies Love has tickets open until January 2024 and its contract with The Broadway Theater, where it’s playing, is “open-ended.” So it can “keep going as long as tickets sales are up.” He then gave a satisfied smile: “So far, so good.” In the future, he said he hopes to produce more shows, including maybe an original Filipino musical or play on Broadway. “I think now that Here Lies Love has happened, it’s more possible. I won’t say it’s easy, I won’t say it’s easier. But I will say the door is now open for the others to follow.” The post ‘Here Lies Love’ co-producer says hit musical may soon be staged in Manila appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Prince Harry lawsuit against The Sun tabloid set for trial
Prince Harry's lawsuit against The Sun tabloid alleging unlawful information gathering can go to trial but will not include phone hacking claims, a High Court judge ruled on Thursday. Harry, 38, whose official title is Duke of Sussex, is suing several UK newspapers over alleged unlawful information-gathering, including News Group Newspapers -- publisher of The Sun and the now-defunct News of the World tabloids. NGN is part of Rupert Murdoch's global publishing empire and had asked the High Court in London to throw out the claims -- filed by Harry alongside actor Hugh Grant -- arguing they were out of time. But judge Timothy Fancourt ordered that Harry's case can go to trial, concluding NGN had "succeeded in part on its application" related to time limits around alleged phone hacking but "failed on the remaining part". Hugh Grant learned in May that he had won his court bid to bring to trial his claim against NGN, while other high-profile claimants are also pursuing the newspaper group. "A trial of the claims of the Duke and many other claimants is scheduled to start in January 2024," Fancourt wrote in a 19-point summary of his ruling. The judge decided the prince "has a realistically arguable case at trial" over claims the tabloid unlawfully sourced "confidential information from third parties" in part through private investigators. He noted his judgement does not conclude whether they had been made in time, "only... that it is not sufficiently clear at this stage that it was issued too late". However, on phone hacking accusations dating back to the 2000s, Fancourt sided with NGN that a six-year "limitation period" had expired before Harry filed his claim in 2019. The judge also rejected submissions by Harry that he had delayed initiating such a lawsuit due to a "secret agreement" between the royal family as an institution and the publisher. He said that claim "did not reach the necessary threshold of plausibility and cogency", adding "there was no witness or documentary evidence to support what the Duke claimed". Harry, the younger son of King Charles III, has had a rocky relationship with the media, particularly since he and his American wife Meghan left the royal family in early 2020. Since then, they have both launched litigation against British newspaper publishers, including for privacy and copyright breaches, and libel. The prince last month accused Mirror Group Newspapers of "industrial scale" phone hacking, as he became the first British royal in over a century to take to the witness stand. The judge in that lawsuit is yet to reach a decision. The post Prince Harry lawsuit against The Sun tabloid set for trial appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
US actor Kevin Spacey cleared of UK sex offenses
Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey was acquitted on Wednesday in Britain of nine alleged sex offenses, in the latest court victory for the Oscar winner who was one of the first huge stars felled by the #MeToo movement. The star of "American Beauty" and drama series "House of Cards", who turned 64 on Wednesday, was acquitted by majority verdicts in London following a trial lasting several weeks. "I'm enormously grateful to the jury for having taken the time to examine all of the evidence and all of the facts carefully before they reached their decision and I am humbled by the outcome today," he told reporters outside court. It comes less than a year after a New York court dismissed a $40 million sexual misconduct civil lawsuit brought against him, and follows charges of indecent and sexual assault being dropped in Massachusetts in 2019. Spacey's once-stellar career has been halted by the various allegations of sexual offences, which first emerged in 2017 and which he has always denied. The actor told Germany's Die Zeit that he expected to mount a comeback following the acquittal. "I know that there are people right now who are ready to hire me the moment I am cleared of these charges in London," he told the German national weekly. "The second that happens, they're ready to move forward." Madness The jury in London, which began considering the charges on Monday, cleared Spacey of all nine counts that he faced, after more than 12 hours of deliberations. The alleged offences included seven counts of sexual assault, one count of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, and one count of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent. They were said to have occurred in 2005 and 2008 in London, and in 2013 in Gloucestershire, western England. Jurors heard evidence from the four alleged victims, who cannot be named for legal reasons. British rock star Elton John was also among those to testify, as a witness for Spacey. The prosecution claimed he was a "sexual bully" who revelled in making others feel uncomfortable, including by aggressively grabbing men's crotches. One of victims, a former aspiring actor, said he woke up to find Spacey performing a sex act on him, suggesting the actor "drugged" him. He was accused of grabbing another man's crotch "so hard" while driving to a fundraising event, that the car nearly came off the road. Spacey, whose full name is Kevin Spacey Fowler, called the claims "madness" and a "stab in the back". He had been on unconditional bail since first being charged in Britain last year, and on Wednesday walked out of the south London court a free man. The Crown Prosecution Service said it had charged him following "a thorough investigation" by London's Metropolitan Police. "It is the role of the jury to consider the charges and we respect the decision of the court," a spokesman added. Career success Spacey enjoyed a highly successful decades-spanning career with roles such as a middle-aged father lusting after a teen in "American Beauty," a serial killer in "Se7en" and the villain in "Superman Returns". He worked as artistic director at London's Old Vic Theatre between 2004 and 2015. In 2017 he was one of the first stars caught up in the global #MeToo movement as he was accused of sexual assault by multiple young men. He was dropped from the final season of the political drama "House of Cards" and other projects. A New York court dismissed a $40 million civil sexual misconduct lawsuit brought against him in October last year. The complainant, actor Anthony Rapp, alleged the star had assaulted him when he was 14. He brought the civil case after being told it was too late to bring a criminal charge but failed to convince the jury in that case. In 2019, charges of indecent and sexual assault were dropped against Spacey in Massachusetts. The post US actor Kevin Spacey cleared of UK sex offenses appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Phl cinema in the first year of BBM
Here, we look back at the state of the Philippine film industry since he took the seat of power 13 months ago. When President Marcos Jr. became the 17th leader of the nation, the country was on the brink of the “new normal.” The campaign elections even saw multitudes of crowds in the streets, the Filipinos’ political passion overpowering the fear of a Covid-19 infection. Covid-pandemic viewing By May 2022, the month of the presidential campaigns, the Department of Health said the country was at “minimal-risk case classification” with an average of only 159 cases per day. By June 2022, when the President took his oath, 69.4 million Filipinos had been fully vaccinated. Along with the country, the Philippine film industry started healing. On the same month, the country went under Covid-19 Alert Level 2, with 50-percent allowed capacity in indoor cinemas. Live film festivals The Marcos administration saw the return of Filipino film festivals in theaters. On Marcos’ fifth month as president, the QCinema International Film Festival, with the theme “in10City,” held hybdrid screenings — in-person and online. The Metro Manila Film Festival in December 2022, six months into the new presidency, went full force in cinemas for the second time during the pandemic. Earlier, in 2020, during the Duterte administration, the festival was held online for the first time, and the following year, in December 2021, after level alert measures in the Philippines were relaxed, the MMFF finally went back to the cinemas. However, only around 300 cinemas (down from the usual 900) were allowed to screen the MMFF entries. Meanwhile, the 18th edition of the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival was held from 5 August to 31 October 2022 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, in select mall cinemas and online. But what made a mark during the Marcos administration’s first year was the inaugural edition of the 2023 Summer Metro Manila Film Festival. The SMMFF was held in Metro Manila and throughout the Philippines. Organized by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority in partnership with the Cinema Exhibitors Association of the Philippines, the first MMFF was supposed to be held in 2020, but was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2023, held from 8 to 18 April 2023 with the theme “Tuloy-tuloy ang Saya,” the summer festival featured eight entries and, like its December counterpart, even held a Parade of Stars. About Us But Not About Us by Jun Lana, produced by The IdeaFirst Company, Octobertrain Films and Quantum Films, emerged as the first Best Picture of the summer festival. [caption id="attachment_161372" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] About Us But Not About Us by Jun Lana[/caption] The Film Development Council of the Philippines’ sixth edition of its own mini-film festival, held during the Marcos administration’s third month, headed back to cinemas, offering free access to award-winning classic films of the new National Artists for Film and Broadcast Arts at TriNoma Cinema in Quezon City and in all Cinematheque centers nationwide (Manila, Iloilo, Negros, Davao and Nabunturan). CCP closes for renovations On 1 September 2022, CCP president Margarita Moran-Floirendo announced during a hearing of the Senate committee on cultural communities, that The Cultural Center of the Philippines — home to the Cinemalaya festival — will close its doors starting January 2023 for renovation and structural retrofitting works, and will reopen in March 2025. This marks the first time that Cinemalaya, on its 19th year, which has the theme “ilumiNasyon,” will be held at various venues inside the adjacent Philippine International Convention Center, from 4 to 13 August 2023. The rise of political films With the country deeply driven by polarized political views, the Marcos administration saw a war between political commercial films. [caption id="attachment_161370" align="aligncenter" width="1800"] ‘MAID in Malacanang’ stars Cristine Reyes, Diego Loyzaga and Ella Cruz. | Photograph courtesy of viva[/caption] On 29 July 2022, Darryl Yap’s period drama Maid in Malacañang, touted as “the most controversial film of the year,” was released to packed cinemas. The movie, about the Marcos family’s last three days in Malacañang Palace before they were forced into exile, premiered at SM North EDSA and was released nationwide on 3 August 2022. Yap, who passionately campaigned for Marcos, became a controversial filmmaker with the release of his Marcos film. Leni Robredo supporters tried to boycott the film, with some Filipino movie critics exposing themselves as heavily political and non-neutral with their reviews, accusing the film of propaganda and historical revisionism. The attempt to quash the movie’s release failed and it became a box-office hit, with producer Viva Films releasing a statement that it earned a whopping P21 million on its opening day and P63 million three days after its release. It was the first time in Philippine cinema history that local theaters nationwide saw a deluge of moviegoers lining up to watch a movie on the big screen, mostly driven by political affiliation. Another unsuccessful political attempt to diminish the film’s release was Vince Tañada’s re-release of his Martial Law film Katips to counter Maid in Malacañang. Tañada’s film eventually won Best Picture at the Famas Awards. MIM actress Ella Cruz’s remark during a press conference, that “history is like tsismis,” further fanned the flames of political debate online. Eight months later, in March 2022, Viva released Yap’s second installment in his Marcos trilogy, Martyr or Murderer, which now focused on Ferdinand Marcos and the assassination of Ninoy Aquino. Two anti-Marcos movies rose to combat the film — Joel Lamangan’s Oras de Peligro, released on the same day, and Tañada’s movie adaptation of his musical play Ako Si Ninoy, released one week earlier. Movie buffs, political analysts, film critics, the press and social media influencers dove into feverish commentaries on the three films, and Philippine cinemas were ignited and, for a while, became alive with social discourse. New FDCP head On 21 July 2022, Tirso S. Cruz III officially assumed his position as the head of the country’s national film agency, the Film Development Council of the Philippines. He replaced Liza Diño, who was appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte as FDCP chairperson on 12 August 2016. [caption id="attachment_161368" align="aligncenter" width="736"] FDCP chair Tirso Cruz III. | PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF FDCP[/caption] Cruz, a veteran actor, said that the target of the FDCP under the Marcos administration was to support local films, not just in Metro Manila, but also from regional filmmakers. He also professed support for film students and highlighted archiving as part of the FDCP’s agenda, with 42,000 materials in its archives to be salvaged. MTRCB In September 2022, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board released a statement addressing the controversy about its proposal to expand its jurisdiction to online streaming services like Netflix, Vivamax, Amazon Prime and other streaming platforms. The MTRCB said it was responding to multitudes of complaints from parents and other concerned groups demanding that the agency regulate movie and TV online platforms to protect children from harmful viewing. The Marcos administration has seen a continuous boom in streamers, which began during the pandemic, with Vivamax becoming one of the leading local streamers due to the popularity of Filipino sexploitation films. On 23 February 2023, MTRCB chairperson Lala Sotto-Antonio expressed her gratitude to Senators Francis “Tol” Tolentino, Grace Poe and Sherwin Gatchalian for the separate bills they filed that would amend and expand the board’s mandate. “We welcome the move to amend the charter of the MTRCB as it will allow the agency to adequately adapt to changes in technology and the ever-evolving needs of the viewing public and our other stakeholders,” Sotto-Antonio said before the Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media chaired by Senator Robinhood C. Padilla. Eddie Garcia Act In January 2023, the chamber passed through voice voting House Bill 1270, or the proposed Eddie Garcia Act, at the House plenary session. [caption id="attachment_161367" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] HOUSE Bill 1270 has been proposed in honor of the late actor Eddie Garcia. | Photograph courtesy of gma-7[/caption] Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte authored the bill, which aims to provide workers in the movie, television and radio entertainment industry opportunities for well-paid employment and protect them from economic exploitation, abuse and harassment, as well as hazardous working conditions. The bill was named after the late veteran actor Eddie Garcia, who died in 2019 after suffering a neck injury while shooting the television series Rosang Agimat, produced by GMA Network. According to Villafuerte, productions would go from 16 to 24 continuous work hours per set and would rush productions to save costs. The proposed law mandates that normal work hours of the worker or talent shall be eight hours a day; overtime work should not exceed more than 12 hours in a 24-hour period; and the total number of work hours shall not exceed 60 hours in a week. Paul Soriano Relatively unknown to most Pinoy moviegoers, filmmaker Paul Soriano was put on the limelight as the man behind the President’s advertisements — way back from campaigns since Marcos started out as vice governor, and then, governor of Ilocos Norte, up until his senatorial campaign, and eventually his campaign for the vice presidency and presidency. [caption id="attachment_161371" align="aligncenter" width="781"] PRESIDENTIAL Adviser on Creative Communications Paul Soriano. | PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF ig/PAUL SORIANO[/caption] Of course, the opposition in the film industry predictably canceled Soriano, the blood nephew of First Lady Liza Cacho Araneta-Marcos. Dolly de Leon It was also during the BBM era that Filipina actress Dolly de Leon gained international fame for her performance in the 2022 Cannes Palme d’Or winner Triangle of Sadness. [caption id="attachment_161366" align="aligncenter" width="705"] Dolly de Leon gained international fame for her performance in the 2022 Cannes Palme d’Or winner ‘Triangle of Sadness.’ | Photograph courtesy ofig/dolly de leon[/caption] The 54-year old film, television and theater actress made history by becoming the first Filipino actor to be nominated at the British Academy Film Awards and Golden Globe Awards. Filipino movie fans and critics, having been exposed to global content since the rise of the streamers, plus the proliferation of self-published movie reviews, are generally still disappointed with the output and system of the Philippine film industry, but filled with hope that, with full support from the government, Philippine cinema will finally become truly internationally competitive, sustainable and recognized. Elton John testifies for defense at Spacey sex assault trial
British rock star Elton John on Monday gave evidence as a witness for the defense at the sexual assault trial of Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey. The two-time Oscar winner denies 12 charges concerning four men, including indecent assault, which are alleged to have occurred between 2001 and 2013. Giving evidence via video link from Monaco, the musician, and his husband David Furnish were questioned about Spacey attending an annual ball at their home in Windsor, west of London. One of the alleged victims has accused Spacey of sexually assaulting him while he was driving the actor to the fundraising event, claiming he grabbed "so hard" they nearly came off the road. Spacey, 63, had earlier told the Southwark Crown Court in London that the incident "never happened", adding that he was "not on a suicide mission". He said there had been a mutual flirtation between them and admitted to having touched the man but not in a "violent, aggressive, painful way". Responding to questions from the prosecution, John said he recalled Spacey, dressed in "white tie", attending the fundraising event in the early 2000s. "He was on a flight, he came on a private jet and he came straight to the ball," John told the court, adding that Spacey stayed overnight at their home after the event. "I can't remember him coming after that," John said. Asked if he came straight from the private jet, the singer said, "I assume so, yes". Furnish, who was first to give evidence, also said he remembered Spacey's presence at the social event. "He was an Oscar-winning actor, there was a lot of excitement he was at the ball," the filmmaker told the jury. "Other than attending the ball I have no memory of Kevin coming to the house ever again," he added. 'Like another son' John was among the several celebrities that Spacey mentioned in court when he entered the witness box earlier in the trial. He spoke of giving a ping pong table to actress Judi Dench after they worked on the 2001 film "The Shipping News" together, saying they developed a "lovely friendship". Spacey grew emotional on Monday, dabbing his eyes as the court heard character statements from friends and family. "House" and "Dead Poets Society" star Robert Sean Leonard described Spacey as "positive, supportive, and respectful", while Chris Lemmon, son of "Some Like It Hot" actor Jack Lemmon, said Spacey was "like another son" to his father. Spacey is an Academy Award winner for "The Usual Suspects" and "American Beauty", and was artistic director of London's Old Vic theatre between 2004 and 2015. At the opening of the trial late last month, the prosecution claimed Spacey was a "sexual bully" who reveled in making others feel uncomfortable, including by aggressively grabbing men's crotches. The court has heard from the four alleged victims, who cannot be named for legal reasons, one of whom, a former aspiring actor, said he woke up to Spacey performing a sex act on him, suggesting the actor "drugged" him. Last week Spacey in his testimony denied the sexual assault charges and described the prosecution's case against him as "weak". He has previously told the court his world "exploded" when he was first accused of sexual assault several years ago by US actor Anthony Rapp in the United States, adding that he "lost everything in a matter of days". Rapp's allegations were found not proven last year. The trial continues. The post Elton John testifies for defense at Spacey sex assault trial appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Claudine’s lawyer threatens to sue Sabrina M. over Rico Yan claim
Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, the lawyer of Claudine Barretto in a number of her past cases (and also a columnist of the Daily Tribune), said in an interview with movie scribe-host Cristy Fermin that they are considering suing Sabrina M. for her claim that she and the late actor Rico Yan had a secret relationship for more than two years. Yan was the former boyfriend of Barretto, and while they had separated before his demise in May 2002, Topacio said the two were still “still trying to salvage the relationship”. This was about the same time that Sabrina M. said she and Yan were not only lovers, but that Barretto also knew about it -- a claim that Topacio described as "karumal-dumal" (vile). "Para gamitin mo ‘yung pangalan [ni Rico Yan]... para magkaroon ng noise sa iyong movie ay nakaririmarim po iyon. Karumaldumal na gawain po iyon," said Topacio. The lawyer then advised Sabrina M. to just issue an apology on air to settle the matter and gave her three days to do it -- or a cyberlibel case may be filed against her. 'Mag-apologize ka na lang, Sabrina M," said Topacio. "Ayaw ko naman itong gawin sa’yo sapagkat iisang mundo lang naman ang ating ginagalawan. We are giving you three days from today, hanggang Linggo. Marami namang talk shows sa Linggo." The post Claudine’s lawyer threatens to sue Sabrina M. over Rico Yan claim appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Actor Kevin Spacey calls sex assault case against him ‘weak’
Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey on Friday spent a second day in the witness box at a London court, denying sexual assault charges and claiming the prosecution case against him was weak. The two-time Oscar winner, 63, is on trial accused of sexually assaulting four men dating back more than 20 years, including when he was artistic director at London's Old Vic theatre. The prosecution has claimed he was a "sexual bully" who reveled in making others feel uncomfortable, including by aggressively grabbing men's crotches. Spacey began giving evidence at Southwark Crown Court in south London on Thursday, calling himself a "big flirt" but denying any aggressive behavior. On Friday, he was questioned about one man who alleged that he drugged him and performed a sex act on him while he was asleep at his London flat. The "American Beauty" and "The Usual Suspects" actor said the pair were "consensually together in a romantic situation", rejecting claims that the alleged victim was asleep when he was assaulted. Lawyer Christine Agnew told him: "Well, that is the prosecution case." Spacey replied: "And it's a weak one." The defense case is that the complainants, who cannot be named as they have anonymity for life under English law, have exaggerated or fabricated their claims. Spacey described himself as an "affectionate person", saying he had "consensual interactions" with two of the complainants, but accepted he "definitely misread" signs from one other. His alleged victims "did not let me know" if they went further with him than they intended, he told the court, suggesting they may have regretted it later. One, who alleged that Spacey grabbed him in the crotch "like a cobra", may have been motivated by "money, money and then money", he suggested. Spacey denies 12 charges concerning four men, including sexual assault and indecent assault, which are alleged to have occurred between 2001 and 2013. On Thursday, he told the court his world "exploded" when he was first accused of sexual assault by US actor Anthony Rapp in the United States. "There was a rush to judgement and before the first question was asked or answered I lost my job, I lost my reputation, I lost everything in a matter of days," he said. Rapp's allegations were found not proven last year. The post Actor Kevin Spacey calls sex assault case against him ‘weak’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

9-dash-line in ‘Barbie’ movie ‘injurious’ to Phl prestige — Sen. Tolentino
Senator Francis Tolentino on Wednesday warned that the depiction of China’s nine-dash line over the South China Sea in the upcoming fantasy comedy film “Barbie” is “injurious to the prestige” of the Philippines. In a television interview, Tolentino said that screening of the movie in the country would cause a “dilute” in Philippine sovereignty. A scene in the movie shows a map with the nine-dash line, a representation of the territorial claims of China in the South China Sea that overlaps with the exclusive economic zone claims of the Philippines and other Southeast Asian nations such as Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam. “Allowing the local screening of the motion picture… would not just be injurious to the Republic of the Philippines but would be contrary to what our country fought for and achieved under that Arbitral Ruling in 2016. What that effect would be? Something that would dilute our sovereignty,” said Tolentino, the vice-chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. Tolentino earlier urged the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board to prevent the upcoming screening of the Barbie movie, produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, in the Philippines. “The Vietnamese government already decided to totally ban the screening of Barbie following a review, in which, the depiction of the nine-dash line scene was first noticed,” he said. However, Tolentino said he would still be leaving it up to the MTRCB to decide on the banning of the film. “It’s up to [the] leadership of the MTRCB on whether to forbid the showing of Barbie, similar to what the said the agency did when it decided not to allow the local screening of the films ‘Abominable’ and ‘Unchartered’ in 2019 and 2022 respectively, due to their depiction of the nine-dash line,” he said. “The Arbitral Ruling clearly stated that the claim of China here has no legal basis,” he added. Meanwhile, Senator Robin Padilla said he cannot make a personal call at this time on whether to allow the showing of “Barbie” in the Philippines without first watching it. “But this is clear: The decision of whether to allow the showing of this film due to its scene about China’s 9-dash line — which contradicts the arbitral ruling favoring the Philippines — ultimately depends on the messaging of the film,” he said in a separate statement. “If the scene or scenes will affect the arbitral ruling, but if the producers would agree to edit it or them out, then I have no problem having it shown,” he added. However, the actor-turned-senator said if an agreement cannot be reached to make sure the film does not become a geopolitical issue, then there is no choice but to disallow its showing here. Padilla believes the showing of the movie will depend on the context of the film, and the extent the producer is willing to address concerns on the arbitral ruling. In 2016, The Hague Tribunal invalidated Beijing’s ‘nine-dash line doctrine’ over the entire SCS region following an arbitration case filed by the Philippine government on 22 January 2013. The Tribunal ruled that China’s nine-dash line unilaterally encroached on territories of other member-states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.### The post 9-dash-line in ‘Barbie’ movie ‘injurious’ to Phl prestige — Sen. US actor Kevin Spacey due in UK court for sex offenses trial
Oscar-winning Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey was due in a London court on Wednesday to stand trial for a dozen sexual offenses which allegedly occurred more than a decade ago. The 63-year-old star of "American Beauty" and drama series "House of Cards" is facing a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in south London. Dozens of photographers and journalists gathered outside the court from 6:30 am (0530 GMT) on Wednesday hoping to catch a glimpse of Spacey, who arrived by taxi with his legal team not long after 8.00am. Walking past the cameras Spacey looked relaxed and gave a small wave, according to an AFP journalist. Spacey has been on unconditional bail since first appearing in court in Britain last year. The actor's stellar career has been halted by large numbers of allegations of sexual offences, although he has not been convicted of any crime. Last year he appeared at London's Old Bailey court to plead not guilty to five offences against three men, including four counts of sexual assault and one of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent. They allegedly took place in 2005 and 2008 in London, and in 2013 in Gloucestershire, western England. In November, prosecutors then announced seven additional charges involving another man, taking the total number of counts Spacey faces in the UK to 12. Denial The fresh counts, allegedly committed between 2001 and 2004, comprise three offences of indecent assault, three of sexual assault and one of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent. Spacey, whose full name is Kevin Spacey Fowler, appeared at Southwark Crown Court in January to deny all the new charges. He spoke only to confirm his identity and to enter the not guilty pleas. None of the alleged victims can be identified under English law and reporting restrictions prevent further details being disclosed before trial. Spacey enjoyed a highly successful acting career with roles such as a middle-aged father lusting after a teen in "American Beauty," a serial killer in "Se7en" and the villain in "Superman Returns". He worked as artistic director at London's Old Vic Theatre between 2004 and 2015. In 2017 he was one of the first stars caught up in the global #MeToo movement and was accused of sexual assault by multiple young men. He was dropped from the final season of the political drama "House of Cards" and other projects. Last year a New York court dismissed a $40 million sexual misconduct lawsuit brought against Spacey. The complainant, actor Anthony Rapp, alleged the star had assaulted him when he was 14. He brought the civil case after being told it was too late to bring a criminal charge. In 2019, charges of indecent and sexual assault were dropped against Spacey in Massachusetts. In court appearances, Spacey has denied all allegations of sexual assault. Decorum
In the hope of relieving the paucity of Mr. Robinhood Padilla’s English vocabulary, he needs to be informed of “d”-letter words related to decorum, a word that he recently got hilariously entangled with. Novice pol Mr. Padilla, in case you haven’t yet heard, got it into his head that he’s a daunting bête noire to former Senator Franklin Drilon, who recently aired a disturbing critique about some members of the current Senate lacking in decorum. But before that, decorum, as defined by the Cambridge Dictionary, means “behavior that is controlled, calm and polite.” It’s a definition that goaded in me a train of words related to decorum: Deportment, demeanor, decorous, decent, dignity, degenerate, debauched, despicable, depraved, degraded, deplorable and devastating. I may have missed other words, but the relevant point of the word parade is that it’s in agreement with Mr. Drilon’s gloomy prognosis that current senators lacking in decorum are a death threat to his beloved Senate. Hear Mr. Drilon: “With all due respect — and I hope that my former colleagues are not onion-skinned — I’m compelled to speak out on what the public perceives to be the erosion of prestige in the Senate, principally by what is perceived to be the lack of decorum by some senators.” Isn’t that a long way of saying there’s an ongoing Senate Apocalypse Lite? Mr. Drilon, however, didn’t name any guilty senator. But Mr. Padilla oddly enough reacted, and in the process made himself the defendant in the issue, despite prefacing that he wasn’t one of the alluded to villains. In obvious defiance of the four-term former senator, Mr. Padilla attacked the decorum critique as deplorable flummery. He asserted that the new Senate members were doing their respective jobs with utmost civility and dignity. Yet, Mr. Padilla’s virtue signaling that he’s up to the job sounded fatuous, of absurd self-importance even, which ended with us having a problem with his cosmetic muscularity rather than assuring us of a dignified Senate. His failure to impress us with Olympian-like rightness even became surreal when he pronounced the current roster of senators as belonging to the “new generation,” that their work was not based on being “honorable looking,” that they were of the masses and had their feet on the ground. Such a debauched litany of self-serving qualities, however, do the masses a disservice, considering that the masses often comport themselves properly by respecting societal mores when attending, for instance, mass or court hearings. Certainly, the masses don’t publicly denigrate themselves by picking their noses, much less combing their mustache, in the middle of mass or a court hearing. The masses aren’t that depraved when it comes to their manners. A Senate hearing, of course, has the same decorous gravitas as a court hearing and the masses won’t certainly do anything like Mr. Padilla’s disgusting indiscretion of publicly combing his newly grown mustache. The actor-turned-politician, in case you haven’t seen the video, did just that last May, nonchalantly during a Senate hearing combing his mustache — a spirited hairy appendage that he says he needs for his forthcoming movie role as Marcelo del Pilar. It is sad to learn that Mr. Padilla will get to portray a heroic, talented revolutionary with a knack for turning vulgarity, which often comes with rebellion, into elegant and eloquent Spanish. Subsequently drubbed, Mr. Padilla surprisingly didn’t expiate for his piss-smelling crassness with sincere regret. Instead, he cynically excused himself, asserting “The rules of the Senate do not prohibit combing a mustache. If there’s a rule on that and it is prohibited, I’d comply.” Disparate though that remark is, it needs no further comment. Except that now we can count Mr. Padilla grooming his mustache as among the Senate’s exceptional past and present follies. Still, Mr. Padilla’s indiscretion “has the lifespan of fresh flowers on a grave.” But, there’s always something, if not a lot, to learn by watching the Filipino postmodern populist political theater — we are both amazed by and sorry for an inane populist egotist. ‘Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile’ cast reflects on taking risks
Picture this: You’re in a daze, recalling every stolen glance and shared laugh with your special friend, sensing something else there -- something akin to brewing romance. It’s a classic conundrum that may leave you feeling both edgy and thrilled -- and it’s something that Angge (Yukii Takahashi) and Bryce (Wilbert Ross), lead characters of Puregold Channel’s Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile, know only too well. Would you risk it all and bare your feelings, potentially transforming the entire dynamic of your relationship? Would it be worth putting your precious friendship at risk? As Angge and Bryce grapple with the overwhelming urge to declare their feelings, cast members of the hit series Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile ponder on how a leap of faith can lead to true love -- or the loss of a cherished friend. Migs Almendras, who plays Ketch in the digital series, says, “I would not confess, because I value the friendship much more than the idea of being in a relationship with that person.” TJ Valderrama, who stars as Cyrus, learned his own lessons the hard way. “I tried to bare my feelings for the person I liked, but it ended up jeopardizing our friendship. Things turned awkward between us and soon, we weren’t as close as we used to be. These days, when it looks like I’m getting feelings for a friend, I shrug it off or distance myself a little.” Courage can also be a factor, as Anjo Resurreccion, who plays Jerry, puts it, “Being the torpe that I am, I wouldn’t confess my feelings to anyone. I don’t like going through the pain of rejection.” On the other hand, other characters of Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile feel that ‘fessing up is the way to go. Kat Galang, Genski in the series, shares, “There is nothing wrong in expressing how you really feel, especially if it’s something special. I want to be honest to my friend whom I have special feelings for, and I won’t expect anything in return. Plus points kung gusto ka din niya. If not, eh ‘di back to friendship!” Lead actor Yukii Takahashi, Angge in the series, believes that we should be honest with our feelings. “I would let the other person know how I truly feel, and see if something good comes out of it.” Wilbert Ross, who plays Ang Lalaki star Bryce, says there are people who are okay with being friends, and are reluctant to ruin the friendship especially when feelings aren’t mutual. “I think we will be able to sense, even just a little, if our friend has feelings for us too. If this is the case, then why not confess? Maybe it will become something more!” While they have differing views on the issue, everyone agrees that friendship makes for a strong basis for a lasting relationship. Moi Marcampo, who stars as Chili Anne, says, “Every relationship goes through friendship. It’s better that you know each other well before deciding to be together romantically.” To this, Star Orjaliza or Yaya Aimee in ALSLNP agrees. “You need a foundation. You need to get to know each other before you enter the next level.” More cast members talk about friendship being the foundation to a romantic relationship, like TJ and Kat. “Friendship is very important in a relationship. Things become a little easier. Relationships require a lot of work, but if you’re experiencing life and relationships with your lover who is also your friend, it becomes more beautiful,” says TJ. “There is a certain respect that both parties have established as friends, which, for me, is stronger than love,” Anjo affirms. Kat adds, “At the end of the day, the partnership feels more genuine because you know each other on a deeper level than romance.” Marissa Sanchez, who plays Bryce’s mom Bessie, takes it to an even higher level and mentions marriage. “A friendship knows no boundaries, while being in a relationship can be circumscribed. That’s why the advice I always give to young people is: marry a friend.” Yukii affirms this. “If you are dating to marry, your partner should be your best friend, because friendship is the core of any healthy relationship.” Of course, Wilbert has the same perspective. “The best partner is your best friend, someone who will always be there for you, and someone who can rely on you, for better or for worse.” In recent episodes of the digital series, Bryce and Angge have crossed the virtual barrier and become real-life friends. While inclined to keep the status, both characters are finding their growing feelings difficult to deny. Will Angge and Bryce lay their hearts on the line, finally leading to a romantic relationship? Or will factors such as old loves and family affairs get in the way of their love story?
