Balik-Tanaw | The dissident love of Jesus
The readings for Palm Sunday begin with narrating the triumphant entry of Jesus and His disciples to Jerusalem. According to the story, Passover and the Feast of the Unleavened Bread is coming in two days’ time and a lot of Jews will go up to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast. As observant Jews, Jesus and his disciples came to Jerusalem in observance of the feast that will take place (John 12: 12-16; Mark 14:1-15). When they drew near Jerusalem, to Bethphage at the Mount of Olives, Jesus instructed his two disciples to go to a village where they will find an ass and to bring it to him. Jesus rode on the ass when he entered Jerusalem. The people accompanied him and they held palm branches while crying out, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our Father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!’ (Mark 11:1-10). The post Balik-Tanaw | The dissident love of Jesus appeared first on Bulatlat......»»

Museum to fix Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson waxwork after skin tone complaints
A French museum said Monday it is working urgently to fix a much-derided waxwork of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson after the US actor complained about its pale skin tone. Johnson, who is of Samoan and Black origin, took to Instagram this weekend to joke about the Grevin Museum's botched wax figure, which appeared to depict him with white skin, and bears only a vague likeness to his features. "For the record, I'm going to have my team reach out to our friends at Grevin Museum, in Paris, France, so we can work at 'updating' my wax figure here with some important details and improvements -- starting with my skin color," wrote Johnson, best known by his stage name The Rock. On Monday, the museum told AFP that staff were "reworking" the wax figure, and that an updated version would be reinstalled Tuesday morning. "They're going to work all night on it so that it's more in line with fans' expectations," Yves Delhommeau, the museum's director, said in a statement. "Crews will work through the night to ensure the likeness is more in keeping with the expectations of his fans. "We're also going to reconfigure the lighting because there was a lighting issue that was having the effect of lightening his skin." Johnson "will come see us later on to see if there are other modifications that need to be made." The figure of Johnson was unveiled on social media last week by the Grevin Museum, which draws nearly 800,000 visitors a year. But a photo intended to promote the new statue drew an outcry from Johnson's fans, ranging from bemusement to anger. One commenter said the figure looked like an "Eastern European plumber." "Why would you white wax (wash) him?" wrote another. Comedian James Andre Jefferson Jr. released an online video mocking the statue, prompting Johnson to respond. Jefferson said in the video that The Rock was being made to look like former England soccer star David Beckham or "part of the Royal family." "I'm low-key offended," said Jefferson. In 2018, the museum drew similar mockery for an unflattering figure of French President Emmanuel Macron. Producing a Grevin sculpture takes six months and costs 50,000 to 60,000 euros ($60-70,000). London Fashion Week throws spotlight on young designers
After New York, the fashion world descended on London Friday for a catwalk extravaganza showcasing big names such as Burberry but also the work of young designers who could become household names. Ahead of the official start, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour on Thursday evening hosted a star-studded event billed as Britain's answer to New York's Met Gala. Supermodels Kate Moss, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, and Cindy Crawford were joined by stars of music, theatre, and film from Kate Winslet and Brian Cox to Annie Lennox and Rita Ora. Actress Sienna Miller however stole the show with a daring pregnancy bump-baring outfit. Last year's London Fashion Week, billed as a comeback after disruption due to the Covid pandemic, was overshadowed by the death of Queen Elizabeth II and 10 days of national mourning. This year, more than 80 designers are set to present their spring/summer 2024 collections, with around 50 catwalk shows and other presentations. "It's going to be five really exciting days full of creativity," said Caroline Rush, chief executive of organizers of the British Fashion Council. But in the world of fashion, London is enduring a post-Covid slump, with inflation -- the highest in the G7 at 6.8 percent in July -- and Brexit combining to create a depressed economic backdrop. That has left the British capital trailing Paris, Milan, and New York in the fashion week stakes. In a sign of its loss of influence, even British former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham has crossed the Channel to present her designs in Paris since last year. Fresh UK finding On Wednesday, the UK government announced £2 million ($2.5 million) to support young designers, which will go to the BFC's existing NewGen program. The scheme, which over the last 30 years has supported the best young fashion designers, aims to launch the high-end global brands of tomorrow. The UK government funding will go towards the staging of five fashion weeks over two years, said the BFC. Previous recipients include the legendary Alexander McQueen, who died in 2010. On Saturday, the Design Museum in London is presenting an exhibition celebrating young NewGen talents, and the energy they have brought to the industry. "REBEL: 30 Years of London Fashion" showcases about 100 designs, some of which have gone down in pop culture history. This year, about 20 designers are benefiting from the NewGen program. Most are recent graduates, but who have already managed to dress some of the biggest stars. Outfits by Ukrainian designer Masha Popova have been worn by singer Dua Lipa. Di Petsa has dressed actress Zendaya. Among the more established names are 16Arlington, JW Anderson, Molly Goddard, Richard Quinn, Roksanda, and Simone Rocha. But Burberry, the London fashion house founded in 1856, remains the most eagerly awaited show. It takes place on Monday afternoon and will be only the second collection for British creative director Daniel Lee, following on from his February show. The ex-Bottega Veneta designer replaced Riccardo Tisci a year ago. Sales have soared in China for the brand with the distinctive check print. On the final day, Tuesday, Ukrainian designers will present their collections with London once again hosting Ukrainian Fashion Week due to Russia's invasion. The BFC is also trying to make London an increasingly inclusive venue for catwalk shows. It has launched a survey aimed at all those working in the sector, with questions on their gender, sexual orientation, religion, and social background. "The audit is long overdue and marks the first step towards the vital measurement of the UK fashion industry's collective progress towards the goal of fair representation," the BFC said. The results will be announced later this year. The post London Fashion Week throws spotlight on young designers appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Colombia extradites celebrity designer to US over illegal leathers
Colombia has extradited to the United States a celebrity fashion designer wanted for the alleged smuggling of protected animal skin purses, police in the South American country said Wednesday. Nancy Gonzalez's purses, clutches, and wallets sell for thousands of US dollars apiece, have appeared on catwalks and TV shows, and grace the shelves of high-end shops around the globe. But the Colombian, 78, was arrested in July 2022 in the city of Cali on accusations related to more than 200 of the caiman- and python-skin products that were allegedly imported illegally and sold in the United States. Individuals were allegedly paid to bring the bags from Colombia to New York on commercial flights and coached to lie about the provenance of the goods if asked. Some of the skins were allegedly from species that were either protected or in danger of extinction, police official Jose Luis Ramirez said in a video sent to media. Gonzalez was sent to the United States along with her business partner Diego Mauricio Rodriguez, the police said, without specifying when. The pair are wanted in the Southern District of Florida. She risks a 25-year prison term. According to her website, Gonzalez's bags are handcrafted in her native Cali by a team of artisans. The site says her bags are sold at over 300 luxury retailers, including Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Harrod’s, and Tsum. Her designs were also featured in an exhibition by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Among Gonzalez's famous clients are Salma Hayek, Britney Spears, and Victoria Beckham. Lionel Messi signs contract with Inter Miami through 2025
Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has signed a contract until 2025 with Inter Miami, the Major League Soccer team announced on Saturday. The 36-year-old striker who sparked Argentina to a World Cup title last year in Qatar, is set to be unveiled by the team in a Sunday ceremony and expected to join Inter Miami on the pitch as early as Friday. "I'm very excited to start this next step in my career with Inter Miami and in the United States," Messi, who moves from Paris Saint-Germain, said in a statement. The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner's arrival in Miami has already caused a sensation and is expected to spark greater interest in the game and MLS across the United States. It's also hoped he'll revive the fortunes of a Miami squad at the bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference at 5-13 with three drawn. "This is a fantastic opportunity and together we will continue to build this beautiful project," Messi said. "The idea is to work together to achieve the objectives we set and I'm very eager to start helping here in my new home." Messi's debut match is planned for Friday when Inter Miami will host Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup, a revamped competition between MLS and Mexican league squads. It's the biggest boost for the North American league since English star David Beckham, now a co-owner of Inter Miami, joined the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007. He launched the MLS Miami squad in 2020 after years of trying to find a stadium site. "Ten years ago, when I started my journey to build a new team in Miami, I said that I dreamt of bringing the greatest players in the world to this amazing city, players who shared the ambition I had when I joined LA Galaxy to help grow football in the USA and to build a legacy for the next generation in this sport that we love so much," Beckham said in a statement. "Today that dream came true. "I couldn't be prouder that a player of Leo's caliber is joining our club, but I am also delighted to welcome a good friend, an amazing person, and his beautiful family to join our Inter Miami community. "The next phase of our adventure starts here and I can't wait to see Leo take to the pitch." World's greatest Inter Miami head coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino has managed Messi in two separate prior stints –- with FC Barcelona in the 2013-14 campaign, winning the 2013 Spanish SuperCup, and from 2014-2016 with the Argentine national team. Messi captained the Albiceleste to victory at the 2021 Copa America as well as the Qatar World Cup and has 103 goals in 175 appearances for Argentina. "We're overjoyed that the greatest player in the world chose Inter Miami and Major League Soccer," MLS commissioner Don Garber said. "His decision is a testament to the momentum and energy behind our league and our sport in North America. We have no doubt that Lionel will show the world that MLS can be a league of choice for the best players in the game." Messi is set for a glitzy arrival ceremony on Sunday at "The Unveil" with 18,000 expected to watch his first public event with his new club, followed by his first news conference with Inter on Monday and first training session with the club on Tuesday. "I'm honored to welcome Leo Messi and his family to their new home," Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas said. "We made a promise to build an ambitious club that would attract the world's elite players... a heartfelt thank you to our fans that never stopped believing. Together we will continue to turn dreams into reality." The post Lionel Messi signs contract with Inter Miami through 2025 appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
The Londoner Macao marks reopening of the city
The former Sands Cotai Central celebrates its rebirth as The Londoner Macao. Sands China Ltd. will formally launch its rebranded integrated resort, The Londoner® Macao, with a grand celebration on 25 May to be attended by David Beckham, the British soccer icon and Sands Resorts Macao global ambassador. With a theme of “The Journey Begins,” the gala event looks to the future as Sands China Ltd. renews its commitment to Macao through a new 10-year gaming concession. The Londoner Macao is comprised of five hotels — including all-suite namesake flagship, The Londoner Hotel. The integrated resort has been undergoing a rebranding process since 2021. “Now that pandemic restrictions have eased, we are delighted to finally give The Londoner Macao the unveiling it deserves and share its fabulous transformation with the world,” said Dr. Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd. “At the same time, we’re also celebrating the opportunity we’ve been given over the next 10 years by the Macao SAR government to help the city evolve into a fully diversified, global tourism hub.” [caption id="attachment_131546" align="aligncenter" width="525"] The hotel will have a British design aesthetic.[/caption] Integrated resort The integrated resort’s hotels offer nearly 6,000 rooms in total, complemented by three spas, four health clubs, more than 20 dining options, boutiques from 150 world-renowned brands and state- of-the-art conference facilities, including the new 6,000-seat The Londoner Arena. The refurbishments and additions have cost approximately $2 billion. Uniting much of the lavish complex is a British design aesthetic that conveys both prestige and playfulness. Designers have been inspired by various aspects of English style — from historic architecture and gentleman’s clubs to royal tradition and the Cool Britannia chic of a global Britain — creating an architectural (and highly Instagrammable) masterpiece even by Macao standards. “We feel so proud to be able to finally celebrate The Londoner Macao, one of the most ambitious hospitality projects in Macao to date and welcome guests from all over the world to experience this truly one-of-a-kind property,” said Dr. Wong. Describing the complex as “a tribute to the beauty and history of London,” he said the resort would “delight visitors with its large-scale reproductions, surprising experiences, spectacular dining and incredible attention to detail.” The post The Londoner Macao marks reopening of the city appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
