‘Go to authorities, not social media’
Valenzuela City Mayor Wes Gatchalian on Monday called on the public not to resort to social media in reporting road rage incidents. He also advised motorists who are also gun owners to be “responsible enough” as a license to have a gun is just a “privilege” and not to be used for bullying. “I don’t see any reason why (the motorist who is a gun owner) he would be in a rage. Madaling araw nangyari, maluwag ang daan,” Gatchalian said, referring to Marlon Malabute a businessman from Tondo, Manila who cut and hit at the cab driven by Henry Ong Jr., a resident of Valenzuela. “Wala pang sinasabi (victim) binunutan na ng baril,” Gatchalian said at a press briefing he called to present the victim on another road rage incident that happened in their jurisdiction. Gatchalian was referring to the latest road rage incident that happened on 19 August, a couple of weeks after the controversial road rage incident that happened in Quezon City involving a retired and dismissed policeman and bicycle rider. Gatchalian said the incident only reached them 6 September but their police were able to track down the suspect through the vehicle he used which probers found to have been registered thrice. P/Col. Salvador Destura Jr., Valenzuela police chief said they have already filed charges of “alarm and scandal” as well as “grave threats” against the motorist. He added that they also moved to have Malabute’s gun license revoked. “He will answer that at the Prosecutors’ Office. If he doesn’t show up, he will have a warrant. That’s the time we will hunt him, if he still would not present himself” Destura explained. He added that they also reached out with the suspect’s uncle and brother who promised them their cooperation. The post ‘Go to authorities, not social media’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
‘Go to authorities, not to social media’ — Valenzuela mayor on latest road rage incident
Valenzuela City Mayor Wes Gatchalian on Monday called on the public not to resort to social media when getting involved in road rage incidents. He also advised motorists who are also gun owners to be "responsible enough" as having a license to carry a gun is just a "privilege" to have protection and not to use it like a "street toughie." "Huwag kayong matakot lumapit sa authorities (police or LGU), paalala sa mga gun owner, license is a privilege for protection. Huwag niyong abusuhin," Gatchalian said at a press briefing he called to present the victim on another road rage incident that happened in his jurisdiction. "I don't see the reason why (the motorist who is a gun owner) would be in a rage. Madaling araw nangyari, maluwag ang daan," Gatchalian said, referring to Marlon Malabute a businessman from Tondo, Manila who cut and hit at the cab driven by Henry Ong Jr., a resident of Valenzuela. "Wala pang sinasabi (victim) binunutan na ng baril," the Mayor added. Gatchalian was referring to the latest road rage incident that happened on 19 August, a couple of weeks after the controversial road rage incident in Quezon City involving a dismissed policeman and bicycle rider. Gatchalian said the incident only reached them on 6 September, but their police were able to track the suspect through the vehicle he used which probers found to have been registered thrice because of different transfers of ownership. P/Col. Salvador Destura Jr., Valenzuela police chief on the other end said they have already filed charges of "alarm and scandal" as well as "grave threats" charges against the road rager. He added that they also moved to have Malabute's gun license revoked. "He will answer that at the Prosecutors' Office. If he doesn't show up, he will have a warrant. That's the time we will hunt him if he still would not present himself," Destura explained. He added that they also reached out to the suspect's uncle and brother who promised them their cooperation. Ong for his part, said he came into the open because of his fear and fear for his family's safety. The incident, he added was a traumatic experience to him, affecting his health and work as a taxi driver. He urged the suspect to surrender. Gatchalian, meanwhile, noted the incident will be treated as a "lesson learned" that will make his local government push for the planned installation of 1,500 LED streetlights with close circuit cameras and would serve as a deterrent to similar incidents. He also ordered Destura to conduct checkpoints. The post ‘Go to authorities, not to social media’ — Valenzuela mayor on latest road rage incident appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
LTO slaps road rager with 90-day preventive suspension on his driver’s license
After his guns' licenses were revoked, the Land Transportation Office on Tuesday announced that it has issued a 90-day preventive suspension on dismissed policeman Wilfredo De Joya Gonzales' driver’s license. LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor Mendoza II was quick to clarify that the suspension imposed on Gonzales to drive motor vehicles shall be in effect pending investigation. “Ang ipinataw nating preventive suspensyon ay isang mabilis na aksyon mula sa inyong LTO upang matiyak na hindi na niya uulitin ang nangyaring pananakit at paglabas ng baril sa isang bicycle rider,” Mendoza said. “Hindi pa ito ang final decision. Kasalukuyang ini-imbestigahan ang kasong ito at depende sa outcome ng pag-iimbestiga, maaring permanent revocation at lifetime na hindi na siya maiisyuhan ng driver’s license,” he added. While Gonzales’ inappropriate behavior was glaring as shown in the viral video, Mendoza said the right to due process of the motorist involved should be respected as part of the legal system. “But pending the result of the ongoing investigation, the driver’s license of Mr. William Gonzales is temporarily suspended for 90 days unless earlier resolved,” Mendoza said, as he stressed that the LTO has the power to do so under Sec. 27 of R.A. 4136, in cases of grave offenses like the incident involving Gonzales. Also, Mendoza said Gonzales will be summoned to appear on 31 August, at the LTO-NCR to explain his side of why the LTO should not permanently revoke his driver’s license. ‘Baldie’ and big-talker
As the celluloid world has long since crossed over to the realm of real life, we, the people, have not been left wanting amusement by big-talking politicians who cultivate images reeking with swagger. Who would forget former Hollywood actor and then-United States President Ronald Reagan’s melodramatic, “Mr. (Mikhail) Gorbachev, tear down this wall,” line during a speech in Berlin in 1987 at the climax of the Cold War? Very few millennials or those belonging to generations after may know that Reagan’s call to the Soviet Union’s supreme leader led, in part, to the toppling of the Berlin Wall, separating communist East Berlin from democratic West Berlin. John le Carré even referenced the Berlin Wall in his novel “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold,” which begins and ends in Berlin, where the wall served as a physical and symbolic presence throughout the story. In the opening scene, the protagonist, Alec Leamas, watched as his last agent was shot dead by Soviet-affiliated East German sentries at the wall, tipping him over the precipice, and convincing him to defect. Way earlier in 1956, Soviet strongman Nikita Khrushchev was visiting Poland when he made that infamous line, “We will bury you,” referring to the US-led West, which then used it to further feed its nuclear holocaust, “end of days” paranoia. Khrushchev would later clarify that he never meant he’d rain nukes on Western nations, but that communism would eventually triumph over capitalism, and that the US would be “buried” by the forces of history. How wrong Khrushchev would be with the demise of Soviet empire. Like Khrushchev, our own debonair senator who dropped his screen name Robin, and assumed his real name Robinhood Padilla, may have not meant literally that he would beat up a resource person in a Senate investigation on the alleged violence committed by an employer to a woman, his house helper. According to journalists, Padilla left the hearing in a huff and mouthed an apology off-camera that he let emotions get the better of him. Fine, if the lesson had been learned not to blur the line between reel and real life. But there’s just this propensity by supposed public servants to use big words when faced with challenges that may not be as big as tearing down the Berlin Wall. Again, amusing, but forgivable, if it gets the desired results. We are referring to that post by Quezon City Police District chief Nicolas Torre III in response to a viral video of a man who hit a cyclist after he swerved his car into the path of the bicycle. The hot-tempered motorist even drew and cocked his pistol. Posted Torre in the video blog: “Damn, yari kang kalbo ka. Sumurrender ka na sa pinakamalapit na QC police station para hindi na tayo mapagod pa pareho. Pakidala at surrender na rin ng baril mo para hindi na kami mag-search warrant pa sa bahay mo. Baka kabahan pa ang SWAT ko at makalabitan ka pa ng M16.” Torre’s post is disturbing on several points, foremost of which is that it was a threat to shoot the man on account of his Special Weapons and Tactics team maybe being too “nervous” to have itchy trigger fingers. Doesn’t speak well of the QCPD SWAT team, really, considering that incident in Navotas City when cops, elite SWAT members according to Senator Risa Hontiveros, fired “warning” shots that killed 17-year-old Jerhode “Jemboy” Baltazar. The general could have also chosen to be more circumspect in his language since that kind of cop-speak does not build public confidence and even adds to the perception that cops shoot first and ask questions later. At any rate, that gun-poking incident involving Willie Gonzales, adds to the reasons why neuropsychiatric tests given by the Philippine National Police to cops and gun license applicants may be considered a failure. Appearing in a press conference called by the suddenly jovial Torre, Gonzales said all’s well that ends well as he and the cyclist had already patched up their tiff. There’s no criminal complaint against Gonzales, said Torre, only an administrative one, with the Philippine National Police’s Firearms and Explosives Office to review Gonzales’ fitness to be allowed to own and carry firearms. In a matter of hours, the tough-talking general had become, to some observers, patronizing of the man he threatened with his post. What an about face? Which brings us to that recent exposure of some rogue cops doctoring neuropsychiatric test results may have to do with us being saddled with neurotic cops and loony armed civilians who can pay thousands of pesos to get them certified to own or carry firearms. Shall we heave a sigh of relief that the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections gun ban is about to commence? Nah. Criminals and those drunk with power are, in fact, most happy during such times when they’re the only ones packing heat. The post ‘Baldie’ and big-talker appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
QC police chief urges road rage suspect to surrender
Quezon City Police District Director P/Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III on Sunday urged the road rage suspect, who went viral on social media for hitting a cyclist and brandishing a gun during their heated altercation at an intersection near the Welcome Rotunda area on 8 August 2023, to surrender. A concerned citizen recorded the incident on video and uploaded it on social media, earning hundreds of views and comments, including from Torre. In his comment, Torre urged the still unidentified suspect to surrender to the nearest QCPD Station and not wait for them to catch on him. "Pakidala at surrender na rin ng baril mo para di na kami mag-search warrant sa bahay mo. Baka kabahan ang SWAT ko, at makalabitan ka pa ng M16," Torre warned. The suspect appeared to be a government employee as he was wearing a blue polo shirt with a lapel pin. His red Kia car has a ULQ-802 license plate which the Land Transportation Office is now tracking to determine its owner. The cycling community condemned the suspect's arrogance for taking the bicycle lanes prompting the cyclist to avoid him, whom he sideswiped and almost lost his balance. The suspect got out of his vehicle, berated the unarmed cyclist, and drew his gun. The post QC police chief urges road rage suspect to surrender appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

‘Dirty Linen’ down to its last 2 scorching weeks
Was Dolly de Leon invited to the final media conference on Wednesday afternoon, 16 August, for the ABS-CBN series Dirty Linen, but her schedule of local commitments prevented her from accepting the invite? Or did the production decide not to have her around because she would steal the limelight from all the show’s stars even without trying? [caption id="attachment_172737" align="aligncenter" width="843"] Dolly de Leon. | Photograph Courtesy Of Ig/Dolly De Leon.[/caption] The media huddle was held just two days after De Leon walked off with a Balanghai trophy as Best Supporting Actress at the Cinemalaya 2023 for her portrayal of a loving mother to a speech-deprived son in Iti Mapukpukaw, an Ilocano animated film which also won Best Picture in the festival. It was De Leon’s second Philippine award, but the first ever she received personally. The first one was from the Famas in a digital awards in 2021 for her work in Verdict. It was also for Best Supporting Actress, and the Best Actress winner then was Janine Gutierrez for Babae at Baril, which had also won for her Best Actress from the Urian of the critics group Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino. Gutierrez topbills Dirty Linen. The death of Olivia, the mistress-household help character portrayed by De Leon in the grandiosely and glamorously ruthless series, is what ignited the intensely engaging revenge drama that is slated to end in two weeks. It was a special guest role De Leon breezed through soon after her breakthrough appearance in Triangle of Sadness, which landed her at the Cannes International Film Festival, unarguably the most prestigious film festival in the world. Her character’s death in Dirty Linen became a big deal only because it led to the killing of some other members of the household staff who had the bad luck of seeing Olivia’s corpse in the living room before it was dragged into a nearby pit. They were all servants of the Fierros, an evil wealthy family in some provincial town. The family is headed by fierce matriarch Doña Cielo (Tessie Tomas), with her only son Carlos (John Arcilla) and Carlos’ son Aidan (Zanjoe Marudo). Angel Aquino portrays Feliz, the unwanted and unhappy daughter of the Fieros, while Janice de Belen is Leona, the cold-blooded wife of Carlos and mother of their two children, one of whom is the daughter portrayed by young star Francine Diaz. Epy Quizon portrays Ador, the husband of Feliz whose desire to give her and their two children (Xyriel Manabat and Raven Rigor) a well-off life that could somehow match that of the Fierros led him to keeping a secret pornography business that Mila discovers and exposes during a party meant to honor Doña Cielo. Christian Bables plays a digital expert who can hack any digital system as part of the revenge plot. Changing the landscape De Leon was once quoted in an interview as saying that Dirty Linen is “changing the landscape of Philippine television.” Tomas, who was at the media huddle at Studio 10 of ABS-CBN, declared that Dirty Linen is the best show she has ever been. Though more famous in her younger years as a stand-up comedian who parodied weird well-off women, Tomas is indeed a veteran of TV shows in varying genres. Gutierrez did her best not to cry in gratefulness for the opportunity of topbilling what seems to be ABS-CBN’s most expensive drama series. The Fierro mansion is a triumph in opulent production design, since the location is not a residence but the refashioned clubhouse of Summit Point, a popular golf and country club in Lipa City, Batangas — a project of Sta. Lucia Land Inc. The show’s production designer is Nancy Arcega, who’s been at her work for over 30 years now. It’s hard to argue against claims that Dirty Linen is the best Filipino-produced drama series in the country so far. But for us, personally, it is so far the series that has the most sordid storyline and characters. Practically everyone is evil in varying degrees. And Pinoys love it, for better or for worse. ABS-CBN says the series has gone over a billion views since it was launched on several platforms in January this year. Almost all the major cast members of the series turned up at the media huddle. Only Jenica Garcia, Andrea del Rosario and Soliman Cruz were not there. The post ‘Dirty Linen’ down to its last 2 scorching weeks appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
