Russian boxer, 28, dies after suffering brain injury in ring

By James Ellingworth, Associated Press MOSCOW (AP) — Boxer Maxim Dadashev died Tuesday, two days after suffering a brain injury in a fight in Maryland. He was 28. The Russian Boxing Federation said Dadashev suffered a brain swelling in Friday's light-welterweight fight with Subriel Matias at the Theater at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. He underwent surgery but his heart stopped Tuesday, the federation said. Dadashev was hospitalized at UM Prince George's Hospital Center shortly after the fight, which was stopped by his corner following the 11th round after Dadashev took numerous shots to the head. Footage from the fight shows Dadashev shaking his head in his corner as his trainer, Buddy McGirt, pleads with him to stop the fight, telling him: "You're getting hit too much, Max. Please, Max, please let me do this." Shortly after, the referee stopped the bout at McGirt's request. The Russian Boxing Federation's secretary general, Umar Kremlev, said the federation would investigate whether anyone was at fault for Dadashev's death. "We need to know the truth about what happened," Kremlev wrote in an email to The Associated Press. "I believe that some human factors intervened, that there was some kind of violation." He added the federation would give Dadashev's family financial support. Both fighters were 13-0 before the bout, which offered the winner the right to challenge IBF titleholder Josh Taylor. Dadashev had been viewed as a rising star after beating two former world lightweight champions, Darleys Perez and Antonio DeMarco, last year. Before Friday's fight, he had won 11 of his 13 fights by way of knockout. In a statement, promotor Top Bank called Dadashev "a talented fighter inside the ring and a loving husband and father outside the ropes." He was originally from the Russian city of St. Petersburg but had fought exclusively in the United States since turning pro in 2016. "He was a very kind person who fought until the very end," Dadashev's wife, Elizaveta Apushkina, said in a statement issued by the hospital. "Our son will continue (to) be raised to be a great man like his father. Lastly, I would like to thank everyone that cared for Maxim during his final days." The Russian embassy in the U.S. said in a statement on Facebook it is "ready to provide any necessary assistance for (Dadashev's) repatriation to Russia.".....»»

"Preparado kaming lahat."  Libranza, a native of Agusan del Sur, is on an impressive seven-fight winning streak, with his last loss coming back in 2017, a KO loss to South African Moruti Mthalane for the IBO Flyweight World Championship.  He's coming off a unanimous decision win in Carson back in February.  Also on the card will be Davaeño welterweight Jayar "Hitman" Inson (18-2, 12 KO), who meets veteran Mahonri Montes (35-9-1, 24 KO).  Inson, a former WBO Asia Pacific Welterweight Champion, is coming off a split decision loss to Jonathan Steele in the undercard of the Pacquiao-Adrien Broner bout in Las Vegas back in January.  "Masaya kasi kahit na talo ako [last time], binigyan naman ako ng pagkakataon na lumaban ulit," said Inson.  Undefeated Filipino-American John Leo "The Lion" Dato (11-0-1, 7 KO) is also expected to be on the card.  Apart from the Pinoys joining Pacquiao in Vegas on July 20th, a couple of Pinoy former champs are also in camp as they get ready for their own upcoming contests.  Former three-divison world champion Johnriel "Quadro Alas" Casimero is back on track and is preparing for a bout in Manila this August, while former WBA Interim Featherweight World Champion Jhack "El Kapitan" Tepora, who is coming off a win back in June, is also keeping busy with Team Pacquiao.  "Masaya kami dito na nag-tetraining, kasi maraming Pilipino and isang team kami," said Casimero. Unfazed by 6.4-magnitude quake, Manny Pacquiao puts in work during Fourth of July

The 4th of July, Independence Day in the United States, is usually a time for rest, relaxation, and celebration for most.  For eight-division boxing champion and reigning WBA (Regular) Welterweight World Champion Manny Pacquiao however, it was just another day in the office.  Pacquiao is currently in the United States, training for his upcoming title fight against Keith "One Time" Thurman in about two weeks' time at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Pacquiao will be challenging for Thurman's WBA (Super) Welterweight World Championship on Saturday, July 20th in the United States (Sunday, July 21st, Manila time).  While Pacquiao could have easily taken a day off and join in on the festivities, the 40-year old Pinoy boxing legend instead put on some fireworks of his own as he cracked the mitts for ten rounds with long-time coach and legendary boxing trainer Fredde Roach at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles. Pacquiao's sparring partners were given the day off to celebrate with their families.  Slam Dunk !!! pic.twitter.com/InHejnl7LE — Sean Gibbons (@KnuckleheadSean) July 5, 2019 And while it was all business for Pacquiao during training, he was still in a festive mood as was able to do some celebrating in his own little way afterwards.  pic.twitter.com/2oOqoj49r5 — Sean Gibbons (@KnuckleheadSean) July 5, 2019 Even more impressive is that Pacquiao was able to carry on with his training, even after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake had hit Southern California, leaving many of the residents...shook.  The boxer-slash-senator however, was unfazed as he went on with is training session, as he shared with ABS-CBN's Steve Angeles.  Even @MannyPacquiao felt the 6.4 earthquake this morning.
