SMPC distributes seaweed propagules to Caluya seaweed farmers
Integrated energy company Semirara Mining and Power Corporation, in its continued effort to expand its livelihood programs outside of its host island, recently partnered with the Department of Energy, the local government of Caluya and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to distribute 16,000 kilos of seaweed propagules to seaweed farmers of barangays Sibato and Sibolo in the municipality of Caluya, Antique. With a total project cost of about P450,000, each of the 80 farmers from the two barangays received 100 kilos of seaweed propagules. Seaweed farming plays a vital role as a major source of livelihood in many of Caluya’s coastal communities. Harvesting seaweed, known locally as tambalang, generally takes place after 45 days, and the yields are either sold fresh or dried. Expressing his gratitude for the livelihood grant, Sibolo Barangay Captain Edwin Eguillon said, “Thank you very much to SMPC, because despite our remote location, we still benefited from these livelihood programs.” One of the recipients from Sibato, Genalyn Gregorio Bandolin, added, “We only have a simple livelihood, and this is really a big help. We will never forget that there’s an SMPC who helped us.” Over the past 25 years, SMPC has introduced numerous livelihood programs to communities across Semirara Island and neighboring communities, providing viable sources of income to thousands of households which continue until today. DSWD hails winners of 2023 Natatanging Pamilyang Pilipino
The Department of Social Welfare and Development, together with partner agencies in the National Committee on the Filipino Family, recognized exemplary Filipino families during the awarding of the 2023 Natatanging Pamilyang Pilipino at SM City San Mateo over the weekend as part of the celebration of National Family Week. The NPP aims to recognize and award Filipino families who have significantly contributed towards nation-building and the development of the family as the foundation of Philippine society. In the message of Secretary Rex Gatchalian, which was delivered by DSWD Undersecretary for Policy and Plans Adonis Sulit, the DSWD chief highlighted the courage and strength demonstrated by Filipino families in overcoming life’s challenges as well as their contribution to nation-building. "You and the members of your family are not only exemplary in your love for each other but also in your significant contributions to your communities and society. Your stories of cooperation, care, and even the stories of overcoming life's challenges pave the way for a better future for all of us," Gatchalian said. "Today, I want to convey our heartfelt appreciation to Filipino families who continue to demonstrate the importance of unity, love for one another, and cooperation in our country. Your dedication to family and nation inspires us all," he added. From the regional winners, the NCFF chose the top five model families that will become a pool of ambassadors in promoting NCFF goals, promoting Filipino values, and acting as resource persons in Family Development Sessions, fora, and other family development-related initiatives. Natatanging Pamilyang Pilipino from Western Visayas The National Award Grand Winner was bagged by the Delgado family from the province of Antique in Western Visayas. DSWD: Gov’t may still grant P15K subsidy to El Niño-hit farmers
The Marcos administration has not ruled out granting P15,000 in cash subsidy to farmers who will be severely affected by the El Niño phenomenon, the Department of Social Welfare and Development announced on Thursday. DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian said the agency is in talks with the Department of Agriculture for other interventions after the Sustainable Livelihood Program payout of cash aid to micro rice retailers and sari-sari store owners selling rice. The DSWD chief earlier said the SLP payout for sari-sari store owners has already started, following Malacanang’s imposition of a price cap on regular and well-milled rice through Executive Order No. 39. "We are coordinating with the Department of Agriculture to make sure the intervention will arrive in the coming days. Right now, we are finishing with the small rice retailers. I am a hundred percent sure the president will want to see the shortlist with the department," Gatchalian said. He added that the DSWD can adopt the SLP-cash aid payout mechanism similar to the subsidy for small and micro rice retailers where the list of SLP beneficiaries was provided by the Department of Trade and Industry. The DSWD chief said the DA will be the one to identify the SLP farmer-beneficiaries most affected by the El Niño phenomenon. Aside from SLP, the DSWD launched Project LAWA, or the Local Adaptation to Water Access, in Davao de Oro, Ifugao, and Antique last 31 August to help improve the resiliency of communities affected by the El Niño phenomenon. Project LAWA is an early action plan of the government to mitigate the impacts of drought and dry spells by establishing small farm reservoirs. To assist the poor, vulnerable and marginalized families of Indigenous Peoples, farmers, and fisherfolk, the DSWD, through its cash-for-training and –work program, will provide financial support as an alternative income in exchange for the work rendered by the beneficiaries while constructing the alternative water resources. The second LPA was spotted 235 kilometers west of Dagupan City, Pangasinan. PAGASA hoisted rainfall advisory as southwest monsoon or ‘habagat’ affects Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The weather system will particularly bring light to moderate with at times heavy rains in Antique, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental. The Yellow warning level was earlier raised over the Guimaras (Sibunag, San Lorenzo, Nueva Valencia, Jordan, Buenavista); Antique (Anini-Y, Hamtic, Tobias Fornier, San Jose, Sibalom); Iloilo (San Joaquin, Miagao, Igbaras, Guimbal, Oton, Tigbauan, Pavia, Iloilo City, Leganes, Zarraga, Dumangas); Negros Occidental (Silay City, Talisay City, Bacolod City, Pulupandan, Bago City, Valladolid, San Enrique, Pontevedra, Hinigaran, Himamaylan City, Binalbagan, Kabankalan City, Ilog, Cauayan, Sipalay City, Candoni, Hinoba-An). PAGASA said Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon, and Visayas will experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms. While Mindanao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms. PAGASA said light to moderate winds and slight to moderate coastal waters are forecast for the whole country. Exhibit on 125th anniversary of Malolos Congress opens in Senate
Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda will lead the unveiling of an exhibit commemorating the 125th anniversary of Malolos Congress at the Senate building in Pasay City on Monday, 18 September. The exhibit, titled "Bakit Malolos?" and organized by Legarda's office in coordination with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, will run 18-21 September 2023. "We hope to remind the Filipino people, including our fellow lawmakers, the importance of our past as our history helps us calculate our next steps in preparing for the future," Legarda said. "The Malolos Congress helped signal to the world that Asians were capable of self-governing; it was a preview of what then-colonized countries could do if given autonomy and independence," she added. Originally an online exhibit during the pandemic, the exhibit features the names of the delegates to the Malolos Congress and the facsimile of the First Constitution. Ariston Rendon Gella, Antique's first pharmacist and the great-grandfather of Legarda, was one of its delegates. The exhibit also features several busts depicting historical figures such as the Republic's first president, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, and cabinet member Apolinario Mabini. The exhibit also shows scale models of the Barasoain Church and the Malolos Congress. NHCP Chairman Emmanuel Calairo and Museum Curator Ruel Paguiligan will grace the exhibit. The Malolos Congress played an important role in Philippine history as it ratified the Declaration of Independence and drafted the country's first Constitution months after the country declared independence from Spain on 12 June 1898, in Kawit, Cavite. It also paved the way for the Philippines to be the first republican democracy in Asia.
