Fires kill 42 in Benin, Sicily, Taiwan
At least 34 people died in Benin near Nigeria’s border on Saturday when a contraband fuel depot exploded into flames, leaving dozens of charred bodies at the site, a government official and residents said. The blaze erupted at a warehouse for smuggled fuel in the southern Benin town of Seme Podji, where cars, motorbikes and tricycle taxis came to stock up on fuel, according to local residents. Nigeria is a major oil producer and fuel smuggling is common inside the country and along its borders, with illegal refineries, fuel dumps and pipelines sometimes causing fires. In Taiwan, a fire at a golf ball factory killed at least six people, three of them firefighters who died in an explosion, authorities said Saturday. The fire, which began Friday evening and raged all night, injured more than 100 people, most of them workers, the Pingtung county government told local media. One firefighter and three other people are missing. Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen visited the scene on Saturday morning and expressed condolences to the victims’ families. She said an investigation into the cause of the tragedy is underway. In Sicily, Italy, wildfires were blamed for the death of two people and sent 700 tourists fleeing from their hotel overnight. A 42-year-old woman died after trying to save her horses in Cefalu, east of Palermo, the local civil protection agency said late on Friday evening. She was with her father and brothers but is believed to have become disorientated by the heat and smoke and slipped into a gully, it said. A 68-year-old man also died after fleeing his burning home near Balestrate, west of Palermo, the ANSA news agency said Saturday. The estimated 700 guests from the Hotel Costa Verde near Cefalu were evacuated to a local sports hall late Friday as fires approached, although they returned around 2 a.m. after the danger passed, ANSA said. Firefighters reported a busy night across the whole of northern Sicily, although relief was expected from rain forecast later Saturday, due to last several days. Italian opera soprano Renata Scotto dies aged 89
Italian soprano, opera director, and academic teacher Renata Scotto has died at the age of 89, the mayor of her hometown said Wednesday, as fellow musicians paid tribute to "one of the greatest opera singers of all time". "A unique singer, a great musician, a great artist, a great woman has died," the mayor of Savona, Marco Russo, wrote on Facebook, praising Scotto as "cultured, refined, generous, simple". She died at her home in New York, the ANSA news agency said. Born on 24 February 1934, in northwest Italy, Scotto studied singing in Milan and began her career in 1952 in Savona in Giuseppe Verdi's opera La Traviata. She would go on to grace the world's greatest opera houses, from Milan to London and New York. "I am heartbroken by the death of Renata Scotto, one of the greatest opera singers of all time and a dedicated teacher of young singers," tenor Placido Domingo said on social media. Marines foil ship hijacking
Italian special forces boarded a cargo ship sailing from Turkey to France on Friday and prevented stowaways from taking the crew hostage, Italy’s defense ministry said. Helicopters dropped the marines onto the Galata Seaways off the Italian coast after its captain, facing knife-wielding stowaways, radioed for help to Ankara which alerted the Italian navy on 7 June, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto told reporters. The roll on-roll off cargo ship was sailing from Topcular in Turkey to Sete in southern France when some 15 stowaways onboard suspected of trying to reach Europe were discovered by the crew. The migrants tried to take some of the 22 crew members hostage inside the bridge, while the ship was near the island of Ischia, ANSA news agency said. Italy’s marines “had to take control of the ship, and they did so in a very short time,” Crosetto said, adding that the crew was safe. The marines arrested some of the stowaways while the others hid somewhere in the large vessel. Coast guard and financial police boats were also involved in the rescue operation, the Italian ministry said. The cargo ship was escorted towards Naples and anchored just outside the port, where there was a heavy police presence, local media reported. Venice’s Grand Canal turns phosphorescent green
A stretch of Venice's Grand Canal turned bright green Sunday, prompting police to investigate amid speculation about a stunt by environmentalists. Gondoliers could be seen punting through the phosphorescent waters, while tourists took photographs of the green area, from the Rialto Bridge up and along part of the Canal. [caption id="attachment_137834" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] (Photo by STRINGER / ANSA / AFP)[/caption] The color was first spotted by local residents, the Veneto region's president Luca Zaia said on Twitter. "The prefect has called an urgent meeting with the police to investigate the origin of the liquid," he said. The Italian fire service said it was helping the regional environmental protection agency take samples for testing. It is not the first time the Grand Canal has been turned green. In 1968, Argentine artist Nicolas Garcia Uriburu dyed the waters of Venice's Grand Canal green with a fluorescent dye during the 34th Venice Biennale in a stunt to promote ecological awareness. Police were looking into whether Sunday's action could be a protest by climate change activists, local daily La Nuova Venezia said.
