Sweden leads the way in a sustainable fashion revolution
A beacon of hope, Sweden is pioneering a future-friendly approach to the fashion industry. The “Fashion Forever” exhibition, ongoing at SM Aura from 8 to 14 September, sheds light on said country’s innovative strides in sustainable fashion design, production and distribution. Because of the combined efforts of designers, business people and academics who are dedicated to developing a circular fashion sector, the Swedish fashion scene has experienced a remarkable transition. “Fashion Forever” demonstrates Sweden’s commitment to sustainable development by showcasing the cutting edge of eco-friendly materials and clothing. The Swedish government’s steadfast commitment to sustainability is at the core of this transition. In line with the global Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030 and the Paris Climate Agreement, Sweden wants to set the standard for sustainable fashion production and consumption around the globe. [caption id="attachment_182675" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] Bags by Zarah Juan[/caption] A standout example from the exhibition is “Textile & Fashion 2030,” a government-supported initiative spearheaded by the University of Borås, in collaboration with the Swedish School of Textiles, SmartTextiles, Science Park Borås and the Research Institute of Sweden. This initiative focuses on researching sustainable fashion techniques in small-scale settings and how brands can scale these innovations globally. The circular economy, which prioritizes resource efficiency and looks for creative ways to maximize the value of products, residues, dead-stock and textile waste, is the central theme of “Fashion Forever.” The display showcases ground-breaking circularity initiatives undertaken by Siptex and Renewcell. A ground-breaking facility called Siptex sorts textiles by color and fiber content using near-infrared light, enabling extensive textile recycling. Circulose® is a dissolving pulp with a high cellulose content that is produced by the textile-to-textile recycling business Renewcell. After that, Circulose® is turned into high-quality textiles including modal, viscose and lyocell fabrics. The collaboration efforts among Swedish fashion stores, design institutes and scientific parks—all backed by the government—are highlighted by Swedish Ambassador Annika Thunborg. She claims that by making these efforts, the fashion industry is able to maintain its creative, thrilling, and financial viability while still being environmentally responsible and consumer-friendly. At the exhibition, H&M, a well-known Swedish fashion store dedicated to attaining 100 percent circularity by 2030, presents its “Innovation Stories” program. This effort, which focuses on sustainability, investigates forward-thinking concepts and creative fabrications and designs. To reduce superfluous production and create long-lasting clothing and accessories, they work with local resources, handcrafted techniques and made-to-order procedures. Prioritizing ethically sourced materials and small-scale, community-based production, Zarah Juan is known for its vibrant and uniquely Filipino designs. Lily of the Valley is a pioneer in a take-back program to recycle used and outdated undergarments and offers 100 percent made-to-measure innerwear items to cut down on overproduction. “Fashion Forever” was started by the Swedish Embassy in Manila with help from the Swedish Institute and collaborations with SM Aura and H&M. Cultivating innovation, technology transfer and IP
On a recent visit to Pola, Oriental Mindoro, I had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Modesto A. Landicho, the chair of the Matulatula Agrarian Reform Community Cooperative, or MARCCO. They have recently acquired the technology to effectively eliminate the bitterness of the traditional calamansi juice, leaving only the extract from the pulp. In turn, this technology has greatly improved the sales and ease of labor for the 520 members of the cooperative. To Mr. Landicho, this was a big win for the small cooperative. While there are still ongoing fixes needed to maximize this technology, he can now focus on other priority areas in farming, as the squeezing process has been cut to merely minutes. While this was a short visit to the cooperative, I was reminded of how effective intellectual property sharing, paired with the appropriate technology, greatly improves the work of agri-laborers, especially for the MARCCO population more than half of whom are women. This success story was a result of the Philippines’ long and fruitful partnership with the Korea Intellectual Property Association, or KIPA. Endorsed by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines, or IPOPHL, and assisted by the Department of Trade and Industry Region IV-B, MARCCO was able to receive an IP-sharing incentive from the Korea association. After a series of knowledge-sharing sessions, MARCCO and KIPA settled on a trademark and patent-sharing agreement for a fruit squeezing apparatus fit for the calamansi citrus fruit, one of Oriental Mindoro’s high-value commercial crops. However, KIPA’s project did not stop with IP-sharing. The most crucial part of this cooperation lies in the constant knowledge-sharing seminars where both KIPA and MARCCO identify sustainability matters, thus making sure the technology remains tailor-fit to the demands of calamansi production. While technology transfer is simply a component in the long value chain of agricultural products, it is important to understand how it can affect crop processing that turns raw harvests into marketable products. Technology transfer is the process by which innovations are disseminated from research institutions and private companies to farmers and the broader agricultural community. This industry practice bridges the gap between cutting-edge research and practical on-the-ground implementation. The success of this collaborative IP-sharing project truly depended on its sustainability checks that strengthened the project’s approach to appropriate technology. Appropriate technology refers to innovations that are well-suited to the local conditions and needs of the users. In agriculture, this means developing solutions that are not only effective but also practical for small-scale farmers in diverse environments. For MARCCO, it was when the cooperation ensured that the existing technology from Korea was fabricated and made usable for the small size of the calamansi. By globally sharing their research and technology, innovators can strike a balance between protecting their intellectual property and ensuring widespread access to appropriate technology. Ultimately, this example of public and private coordination facilitating technology transfer is a potential framework for our countless agricultural cooperatives nationwide. Now, MARCCO is soon to be the patent holder for this innovation — an opportunity to manufacture the technology on a larger scale and provide more food manufacturing jobs to the calamansi communities of Pola. Indeed, the future of agriculture depends on our ability to cultivate innovation while ensuring that no one is left behind in the fields of progress. Aboitiz, GCNP spotlight corporate sustainability and SDGs
In the recently held GT Capital Thought Leadership Series at the Grand Hyatt, Manila, the Aboitiz Group emphasized the fundamentals of corporate sustainability by highlighting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and the company’s alignment with the global framework. As a board member of the UN Global Compact Network Philippines, Aboitiz Equity Ventures' FVP and chief reputation and sustainability officer Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar presented essential strategies for enterprises to maximize their impact in fostering positive societal change and environmental stewardship. Hontiveros-Malvar cited the connection between responsible business practices and global sustainable development. The principles, communicated through voluntary reporting mechanisms, facilitate transparent communication of corporate values aligned with the 17 SDGs. “Sustainable development is a concept that focuses on meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It recognizes the interconnections between economic development, social inclusion and environmental protection,” she said. “In other words, sustainable development aims to achieve a balance between economic growth, social well-being and environmental stewardship,” she added. Hontiveros-Malvar also touched on the nation's progress in terms of SDG integration, underscoring the necessity of coordinated efforts between government and non-government actors to optimize resource management and maximize SDG progress. “In the last few years we celebrate many businesses that have come together to create this era of action and attract others to join this global movement. May all of us continue to act responsibly, find opportunities and continue to inspire and advocate. We are united because this is bigger than just one business. We are stronger together and better together. And when we act collectively, imagine the change we can drive, and the better future we can shape as one. The possibilities are endless,” she said. Together with UN GCNP, the Aboitiz Group places utmost importance on sustainability as part of the group's transformation into becoming the Philippines’ first “Techglomerate” by utilizing innovation, sustainable solutions and community empowerment. The integration of sustainability into the Aboitiz Group's DNA has been showcased through various programs that demonstrate the group's commitment to sustainable practices that benefit both society and the environment. Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc. is the portfolio management company of the Aboitiz Group, with investments in power, banking and financial services, food, infrastructure, land and cutting-edge fields like data science and artificial intelligence. A morning stroll around Tuguegarao
Tuguegarao’s market, the hub of commerce for the capital city and nearby towns in the province of Cagayan, northern Luzon, is a quintessential site in provincial commercial centers with vendors preparing their produce and products to be sold for the day. Bags of pansit and bean sprouts were being unloaded for pansiterias to cook the city’s famous noodle dish, pansit batil potun, widely known as pansit batil patong, while early marketgoers visited the local karinderyas serving dishes such as igado and dinardaraan. An ambulant street-side stall sold meryenda or even breakfast fares best served with coffee — puto, suman, cassava cake, and the made-to-order bibingka of many kinds. [caption id="attachment_176530" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Horno ruins (Photo by Edgar Allan M. Sembrano)[/caption] All activities radiated from the multi-level market which spans one block, a landmark to behold not architecturally but for the space it occupies and the important function it and its immediate areas serve to the community. After all, Tuguegarao is still “the best pueblo for commerce in the valley,” as noted in the early 20th century by Dominican priest Valentin Marin. At the city center, there are quite a number of wooden and mid-20th century bahay na bato which breaks the monotony of the modern concrete structures. Of course, Tuguegarao is known for the San Pedro Cathedral, the seat of the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao, and the much smaller Ermita de Piedra de San Jacinto, both made of bricks and built by the Dominicans during the Spanish colonial period. [caption id="attachment_176532" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Our Lady of Chartres Chapel (Photo by Edgar Allan M. Sembrano)[/caption] The Tuguegarao Cathedral was built from 1761 to 1766 by Fr. Antonio Lobato de Santo Tomas who also built the convent, belfry, a famed bridge, large lime-and-brick kilns, and the 25 parallel streets crisscrossed with the same number of streets forming a grid pattern. The same priest also contributed to the literary scene in the region with his Ibanag-Spanish dictionary, Ibanag grammar, and Ibanag devotional treatises. Cagayan is home to the Ibanag people as well as other ethnic groups such as the Itawes and the Ilocano. The San Jacinto chapel meanwhile was built in 1724, making it 'the oldest' structure in Tuguegarao. It still has its original wooden retablo and an iron fence installed in 1890 by Fr. Romulado Aguado, Tuguegarao’s parish priest that year. It is located east of the Colegio de San Jacinto, now the campus of the St. Paul University Philippines, originally the Colegio de San Pablo founded in 1907 by the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres. [caption id="attachment_176531" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Old building at USL (Photo by Edgar Allan M. Sembrano)[/caption] It was in 1934 that the school transferred to the site of the Colegio de San Jacinto from the Cathedral’s convent following their purchase of the colegio’s property. The colegio was located west of the chapel, the area of which is now part of College Avenue and the SPUP campus. That colegio originally served as the Colegio de Santa Imelda, an all-girls school which operated from 1892 to 1898 and was later converted into the Colegio de San Jacinto, a school for boys from 1901 to 1932. The girl’s college building was erected in 1890 under the direction of Fr. Dionisio Casas, the Dominican Provincial Vicar of that time with plans drawn by a certain Fr. Bruges and funds from the Dominican Province of the Holy Rosary. The front façade measures 75 meters while the side facades of the E-shaped edifice measures 25 meters each. The building is 17 meters wide and 10 meters high. It was of the bahay na bato style where the first level was made from stone and second level of wood. The project cost P75,000. Apart from the school building, then the biggest in the province, there used to be a separate wooden house in the area for the use of the Father Vicar. Both buildings no longer exist today. At present, the SPUP with its sprawling campus is host to many buildings including the impressive Gothic —inspired Our Lady of Chartres Chapel built in the second half the 20th century. During the Spanish colonial period, Tuguegarao was noted to have a carcel (jail), casa tribunal (court house), and schools, all of excellent construction. Today, the jail and courthouse house the Cagayan Museum and Historical Research Center which is at present being renovated. In front of this complex is the Rizal Park with the Rizal Monument. Rizal’s monument replaced that of Fr. Lobato de Santo Tomas in 1918. [caption id="attachment_176529" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Fr. Theophiel Verbist monument (Photo by Edgar Allan M. Sembrano)[/caption] Fronting Rizal Park is the old government center of Tuguegarao, now the Tuguegarao East Central School with the American-era municipio reused as one of the buildings of the school. Few blocks from Tuguegarao’s plaza complex are two brick hornos separated by a covered basketball court. Tuguegarao’s other horno is located in the same village (Barangay Centro 9) at the edge of the Pinacanauan River. These kilns produced lime and bricks for the construction of the city’s Spanish colonial buildings such as the church complex and the cemetery portal, walls and chapel. [caption id="attachment_176527" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Cagayan High School (Photo by Edgar Allan M. Sembrano)[/caption] During the American period, public buildings such as schools were also built. These include the Gabaldon-style Cagayan High School Building and the Cagayan Valley College of Arts and Trades. The Cagayan High School Building still exists to this day while the campus of the Cagayan college which is located in front of the former is now the Cagayan State University after its merger with the Northern Luzon College of Agriculture in 1972 through Presidential Decree 1436. The CSU campus now houses a number of overly decorated buildings, perhaps it most unique feature. [caption id="attachment_176528" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Ermita de San Jacinto (Photo by Edgar Allan M. Sembrano)[/caption] Also during the American colonial period, Dutch Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary priest Msgr. Constant Jurgens founded a school for boys named Cagayan Valley Atheneum inside the Tuguegarao Church complex. This school existed from 1938 to 1946 but it was destroyed during World War II. After the war, it was taken over by the Jesuits and renamed Ateneo de Tuguegarao which operated until 1962. In 1965, it became the Saint Louis College of Tuguegarao under the CICM priests and in 2002, University of Saint Louis Tuguegarao. The university’s campus, located on Arellano, Mabini and Lecaros streets, still has its mid-20th century, U-shaped wooden building and features a number of monuments including those of St. Louis Gonzaga, USL’s patron saint; two for Fr. Theophile Verbist, CICM founder; and the gigantic Good Shepherd at the facade of the Good Shepherd Chapel. Exiting through the schools main campus to Lecaros Street, one is greeted by the Bayani Hall Lecaros, the city’s first condominium building, adding another layer to the city’s history. These layers define what is Tuguegarao now, a bustling commercial center, showing glimpses of its storied past of its peoples. Quick AI response as small biz magnet
Digital banking powered by artificial intelligence or AI is increasingly becoming the norm. How fast and flexible industry players can maximize benefits from this technology to provide credit to most small businesses is the edge, Edwin Bautista, president and CEO of Union Bank of the Philippines, told the Daily Tribune. [caption id="attachment_164549" align="aligncenter" width="585"] Edwin R. Bautista, president and CEO, UnionBank of the Philippines[/caption] “All we know is AI will disrupt industries, so the earlier you try to figure out how to adopt it, the better. Now, the question is, how many financial institutions are prepared to make that bet of lending using alternative data sources using AI?” Bautista said. UBP’s digital banking arm UnionDigital Bank is shifting gears to provide small businesses with accessible loans using AI. It collects data from the Internet and humans and organizes them into qualitative and quantitative categories to generate text, images, audio and videos. Many small business owners usually need financial statements on paper, as they sell products and services primarily online through social media, such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. However, Bautista said their financial capabilities could be traced and analyzed even without the formal documents required by traditional banks, such as income tax returns, financial statements, and trading partners profiles. He stressed AI does not discriminate. “When you look at the smaller businesses, they appear as an underground economy, so they cannot produce those kinds of documents. AI will help us because what it does is it puts together different information about that particular business or person and flow of sales so it can give a prediction on whether the small business owner will pay you back or not.” This technology is critical to lenders, including informal lenders, as micro, small and medium enterprises comprise 99 percent of all businesses in the country and drive most of its economic activities. Global market researcher McKinsey & Company said Philippine-based lenders can boost their growth by tapping the country’s bankable population, which is expected to expand by 30 percent to 85 million by 2030, along with owners of small and medium enterprises. “The Philippines has an estimated 15 million informal entrepreneurs and self-employed workers. Meanwhile, retail lending is heavily concentrated in a narrow band of wealthy households,” the researcher said. McKinsey reported a few domestic digital banks had gained traction, with three digital banks, including UnionDigital, growing a total market value by $3 billion. In contrast, traditional banks only saw a $2.2 billion growth between January 2021 and January 2023. However, McKinsey stressed digital banks in the Philippines have been limiting their services to mobile payments. “While competition in digital financial services intensifies, dominant players have yet to emerge outside the mobile-payments subsector. Six digital banks have recently launched operations in the Philippines, but none lend at scale.” Unlike informal lenders, Bautista said digital banks can reach more borrowers as AI learns about all people with access to the Internet and produces sound data correlations. “The theory is that if you have many friends and are grounded in a particular community, chances are you will not just run away from your debt. The minute borrowers go outside their community. It’s challenging for informal lenders because they already do not know the people they are lending to.” With the developments in AI, Bautista said UBP is redesigning its brick-and-mortar banks by tapping digital technologies and its UnionDigital to exchange market insights, systems, and people skills to boost mutual growth. “We think we can be the number one Consumer Bank in the Philippines in the next three years. Why? Because Our growth path is based on broadening the base on which we can learn to adapt. You can only do that if you’ve transformed your front, middle, and back office accordingly.” Bautista said this means the ever-changing skills development of people of both banks. While AI has been demonized by some of the labor force and business owners worldwide, saying it will replace traditional jobs and employees, Bautista said the future remains uncertain. Still, it can also highlight innately human jobs. “AI may rather have pluses and minuses. You will be affected negatively, but you will also have a positive impact if new jobs are generated.” Bautista said proof of this is the human eye, intuition, and brain need to verify whether AI-generated data matches customers’ changing preferences and needs. “So today, I can know instantly what my customer sentiments are. If my back-end operations take me six months, what good is knowing today if I can act on it? And the only way I can act is I have people with the ability to modify their things and a back end that allows me to change my products and features near real-time.” The post Quick AI response as small biz magnet appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Bataan gov’t welcomes transshipment port proposal
Bataan is bidding to host the first-ever transshipment port in the country after the successful negotiation of the provincial government with a private infrastructure firm to undertake the multi-billion-peso project. Governor Jose Enrique S. Garcia, Freeport Area of Bataan Director Atty. Joey Angeles and officials of Premium Megastructures Inc. signed on Tuesday the Certificate of Successful Negotiations signaling the local government's acceptance of the proposed Bataan Transshipment Hub. PMI also received a Notice of Award from the provincial capitol to begin consultations with stakeholders, gather valuable input and undertake comprehensive studies in order to obtain the Notice to Proceed with the development of the BTH. “As PMI embarks on this ambitious journey to create the first future-ready transshipment hub in the Philippines, PMI extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Provincial Government of Bataan, the local government of Mariveles, and the people of Bataan for its trust in this collaborative project,” PMI said in a statement. PMI is committed to excellence, sustainability, and ethical practices in undertaking this project, the company added. PMI still has one hurdle to overcome before it can start the ball rolling for the ambitious project. “The next step will be the Swiss challenge,” Angeles said in a text message to this writer. Under the Swiss challenge, another company may submit a better proposal to the Bataan government which the original project proponent has to beat or countermatch to formally clinch the negotiated contract. No details of the BTH were given, but the PMI's website says the transshipment port "promises to usher in a new era of innovation and efficiency in the logistics industry, bringing about a much-needed transformation that will benefit businesses and consumers alike.” PMI also described the BTH as "a game-changer for the Philippine economy by introducing cutting-edge technology in bringing in larger import-export volumes, streamlining supply chains, improving market access, reducing trade barriers, and enhancing logistics infrastructure efficiency." A teaser video of the proposed BTH can be seen on the PMI website. It shows a sprawling containter terminal with several berths and equipped with gantry cranes. It was when I discovered the beauty of the island even though I had been coming here since I was six years old. It was the turning point of my life,” Bariou tells Daily Tribune. The property was built with the help of Chris’ friend, hospitality professional Bobbie Braga, and architect Michael Litang. The design and landscaping were done by George Tan of Tanaw Design, with Chris’ sister Stephanie who curated the furniture and provided interior design. [caption id="attachment_139832" align="aligncenter" width="525"] VAULTED ceilings make the property more spacious.[/caption] The year 2021 was a sad year for the island. As if the pandemic-induced strict mobility lockdown that prevented tourists from visiting Siargao were not enough, supertyphoon “Odette” barreled into the island in December. Fortunately, Maison Bukana survived the hurricane’s wrath and emerged with only slight damage. “Like, she (Nadine Lustre, his girlfriend) didn’t know I was even alive for, like, three days. At some point, I had access to a satellite phone. I was given a list of survivors and messages from people who wanted to send other news,” he said. Lustre joined him in Siargao from Cagayan de Oro to extend help. “She was here during all the preparations. There was absolutely nothing else we would want to do. We just organized as much as we could,” he said. At that point Bariou realized that making Maison Bukana’s structure sustainable is critical to preserving the property’s natural assets. To begin with, Maison is the only structure on the island made entirely with Ecocast, an earthquake-proof, fireproof, temperature-isolated hollow block made from single-use plastic waste. With eco-consciousness at its core, Maison Bukana has also adopted natural lighting to reduce energy consumption and a gigantic rainwater collection system for its water supply. Its room amenities, personal care, kitchen and laundry are all plant-based and natural. The food selection, on the other hand, is sourced from the freshest and organic products from the island. [caption id="attachment_139833" align="aligncenter" width="525"] MAISON Bukana is the only structure in the island made with Ecocast, a sustainable hollow block made from single-use plastic waste.[/caption] “There’s always been a communication between communities to bring something in for the island in a sustainable way,” said Bariou. Maison Bukana offers a host of leisure activities: Guided private tours in Siargao, island hopping, wake park, surfing packages, water activities and kite surfing. A minimum stay of two nights is required for up to eight guests, yet Maison Bukana can accommodate up to 12 people. Gilas Pilipinas’ SEAG win fuels excitement for 2023 FIBA World Cup
Less than a hundred days before the opening tip of the 2023 FIBA World Cup, Filipino basketball fans are growing excited as they await the final list of local and international basketball superstars who will be playing in the Philippine leg of the said basketball championship. Following Gilas Pilipinas’ euphoric win against an import-laden Cambodian team in the recent 32nd Southeast Asian Games, and with the team’s grit and sound coaching strategies, basketball enthusiasts are optimistic about the team’s chances in this year’s FIBA World Cup. With Gilas Pilipinas facing familiar foes — Italy, Dominican Republic and Angola — in the FIBA World Cup’s group stage, the victory over Cambodia could inspire the players as they compete with these teams. Playing in front of the home crowd will boost the team’s morale as Gilas Pilipinas sets their sights on winning in the 2023 FIBA World Cup and qualifying to represent the flag in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France. The Philippines last played in the 1972 Olympics and winning the FIBA World Cup could end the drought. In an interview, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas President Alfredo S. Panlilio shared his wishes that Gilas Pilipinas could win at least two (games) and move to the next round. Since the 2014 FIBA World Cup, Gilas Pilipinas had only won once in 10 matches. Thus, there is enormous pressure to perform at an all-time high, considering that the Philippines is one of the co-hosts of this year’s tournament. Panlilio added, “If we do that (win at least two games and advance to the knockout stage), possibly, because the highest ranking Asian team after every tournament gets a slot in the Olympics. It’s a reward if we’re the highest Asian team. In the meantime, what remains crucial for Gilas Pilipinas’ coaching staff is its selection of players that would participate in the FIBA World Cup. The players’ selection also excites Filipinos as they all wait to see if Filipino-American and Utah Jazz Guard Jordan Clarkson would don the country’s colors. News reports quoted Gilas Pilipinas Head Coach Chot Reyes saying, “The selection would be based on various factors such as schedules, players’ plans, and even economics. To be very honest about it, to be very frank, economics will also be an issue.” “There are a lot of things that are going to be involved in making the final determination. We plan to have a 16- or 18-man pool, and it might be more, to go on an extended training period that will include foreign camps and tune-up games against quality competition,” Reyes said. The Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia will host this year’s FIBA World Cup from August 25 to September 10, 2023. The games will be played simultaneously at the Araneta Coliseum for Groups A and B, Mall of Asia Arena for Groups C and D, Okinawa Arena in Japan for Groups E and F, and at the Indonesia Arena in Jakarta for Groups G and H. The qualifying teams will head to Manila as the Playoffs and Finals Games will be held at the Mall of Asia Arena. As the country prepares to host the most prestigious FIBA World Cup, Panlilio also called on all basketball stakeholders to unite to support Gilas Pilipinas as it competes in the international arena. With the Philippines’ passionate fans, rich basketball culture, and world-class venues, the stage is all set for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, which is certain to leave a mark on the global basketball landscape. Gilas Pilipinas’ sweet, vengeful SEA Games win
GILAS Pilipinas’ vengeful win against an import-laden Cambodian basketball team marked its return to the top spot of the Southeast Asian Games or SEAG men’s basketball championships. It was a sweet victory for the Philippines men’s basketball team, as it was glaring how the Cambodians, the 32nd SEAG’s host country, took advantage of the rules by fielding more naturalized players than other competing countries. Though this may be allowed, it does not bode well for the tournament and the sport. Why so? Other countries, including the Philippines, continue to identify and develop players from the grassroots levels. And if tournaments, such as the recent SEAG Men’s Basketball competition, allow host countries to field more naturalized players than others, how does this promote fair play among competing nations? Luckily, after losing to Cambodia in the early group stage, Gilas booked a rematch against the home team for the gold medal. And this time, the Philippine squad came prepared with a sound plan despite unfavorable court conditions and the lopsided lineup of mainly naturalized Cambodian players. Gilas’ offensive and defensive strategy helped them stave off comeback attempts and left the Cambodians to settle for a silver medal. The three-point shooting of naturalized forward Justin Brownlee, Marcio Lassiter, Chris Newsome, and CJ Perez helped Gilas spread the floor, allowing our big men to dominate and score in the shaded area. Gilas shot slightly better with its 47.8 percent field goal percentage versus Cambodia’s 41.9 percent. Gilas also outrebounded the Cambodians by four boards at 40 rebounds versus 36 rebounds. The intense shooting, ability to draw fouls, minimizing turnovers, the solid defensive performance resulting in six steals and three blocked shots helped propel Gilas Pilipinas to win its 19th Southeast Asian Games Gold Medal. ‘This is a reminder to our country and the Southeast Asian Region that upholding the values of fair play, sportsmanship, and the love for country triumphs all’ In his congratulatory message to Coach Chot Reyes, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Chairman Emeritus Manuel V. Pangilinan said he was happy to be proven wrong with the gold medal victory of Gilas. MVP earlier tweeted his concern over Gilas’ defeat to Cambodia in the group stage. SBP President Alfredo S. Panlilio also commended Gilas, saying, “Gilas showed that the pride of fighting for our country is stronger than any motivation. The team played through substandard conditions in the court under the sweltering heat and overcame bumps and bruises to make us all proud.” He added, “This is a reminder to our country and the Southeast Asian Region that upholding the values of fair play, sportsmanship, and the love for country triumphs all.” Gilas Head Coach Chot Reyes acknowledged that the earlier defeat to Cambodia brought the team together. “They’re united, and they stuck together. I’m just so proud of what we’ve done. We came here for the gold medal, and we’ve done it.” SBP also expressed gratitude to the Philippine Basketball Association and the University Athletic Association of the Philippines for allowing players from both leagues to represent the country in the 32nd SEAG. “On behalf of the SBP, I would like to thank UAAP, the PBA, its team owners, and the Board of Governors again for allowing its players to be part of the Gilas Team that won the Gold Medal in a hard-fought match against the host country,” Panlilio said in his letter to the two basketball associations. He added that SBP is aware of the PBA’s contribution to basketball’s growth, development, and success in the country. “The competitiveness in the league allowed Gilas to rise above the challenge it faced in Cambodia,” Panlillio added. The PBA players participating in the SEA Games were Justin Brownlee, CJ Perez, Christian Standhardinger, Chris Ross, Calvin Oftana, Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, Marcio Lassiter, Arvin Tolentino, and Chris Newsome. Among the UAAP collegiate players were Adamson’s Jerome Lastimosa, Ateneo’s Mason Amos, and La Salle’s Michael Philips. As the country prepares to host the most prestigious World Cup FIBA basketball championship in August this year, Panlilio calls on all basketball stakeholders to unite in supporting Gilas Pilipinas as we compete in the international arena. Gilas Pilipinas’ strong performance, fueled by its heart and will to succeed, should inspire every Filipino to give their best in all the challenges they meet in life. Timberwolves hold off Nuggets to stay alive, Warriors edge Kings
Anthony Edwards scored 34 points, including a three-point dagger with 11.5 seconds left, as the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Denver Nuggets 114-108 in overtime Sunday to stay alive in the NBA playoffs. Western Conference top seeds Denver, led by 43 points from reigning two-time Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic, closed regulation on a 12-0 run to force overtime. But they were out-scored 18-12 in the extra session at the Target Center in Minneapolis as the Timberwolves pulled within 3-1 in the series. Minnesota still face a daunting task -- no NBA team has come back from 3-0 down to win a best-of-seven series. "See you in Denver, we're going back," said Edwards, whose 16 third-quarter points keyed a Timberwolves charge that carried them to a 12-point lead midway through the fourth. Mike Conley added 19 points for Minnesota. Karl-Anthony Towns scored 17 points with 11 rebounds and Rudy Gobert added 14 points and 15 rebounds as the Timberwolves withstood another big night from Jokic. The Serbian star matched his playoff scoring high and added 11 rebounds and six assists. The teams swapped the lead four times in overtime, but Nuggets coach Michael Malone said too many defensive lapses in the extra session doomed his team. "You hold them to 16 points in the fourth quarter, then (they have) 18 in five minutes," Malone said. "That's the hardest thing to stomach about this game is that when the game was on the line, we were unwilling and unable to get the necessary stops." 'Sloppy' Curry It was the second Western Conference thriller of the day, after the Golden State Warriors held off a ferocious fourth-quarter fightback from the Sacramento Kings to secure a 126-125 victory that leveled their series at two games apiece. Harrison Barnes almost snatched victory for Sacramento at the buzzer, but his long-range effort bounced off the rim to leave the NBA champions celebrating. Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 32 points -- and breathed a sigh of relief after two uncharacteristic blunders in a frenetic finale at the Chase Center. Curry missed a wide-open three-pointer with his team-leading 126-121 with less than a minute remaining. He then erroneously called a timeout when the Warriors had none left, earning a technical foul and allowing Sacramento's Malik Monk to make it a four-point game with a free throw. De'Aaron Fox's three-pointer pulled Sacramento within 126-125 and Curry missed another floater to give the Kings a final chance. "It was kind of sloppy not knowing how many timeouts we had left, and a couple of dagger shots didn't go in -- but we did what we needed to do defensively in those last 10 seconds," a relieved Curry said. Klay Thompson added 26 points and Jordan Poole had 22. Draymond Green, back from suspension, scored 12 points with 10 rebounds and seven assists off the bench to help the Warriors withstand a 38-point performance from Fox. Knicks, Celtics close in In the Eastern Conference, the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics moved within a victory of advancing, the Knicks beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 102-93 and the Celtics downing Atlanta 129-121 to each take 3-1 series leads. Jalen Brunson drained five three-pointers on the way to 29 points for the Knicks, who again electrified Madison Square Garden. With just one win from three more games the Knicks can advance past the first round for the first time since 2013. Darius Garland led Cleveland with 23 points but Donovan Mitchell scored just 11 -- only two in the second half. The Cavs will try to extend the series when they host game five on Wednesday. The Celtics can wrap up their series at home on Tuesday after bouncing back from a disappointing game-three defeat with a convincing victory in Atlanta. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown scored 31 points apiece for the Celtics, each delivering a dunk in the final minute as the Celtics thwarted the Hawks' final rally bid. Hawks star Trae Young finished with a game-high 35 points and handed out 14 assists. But Boston stepped up their defensive intensity and had an answer for every Atlanta run, never trailing after the first quarter. Brown got off to a slow start, making just one of his first seven shots. Then he got rid of the protective mask he's worn since suffering a facial fracture in February and made 11 of 15. "Maybe it was all in my head," Brown said. "I took it off and started to turn things around a little bit." Nuggets take 3-0 lead over Timberwolves, Knicks dominate Cavs
The Denver Nuggets, fueled by a Nikola Jokic triple-double, beat Minnesota 120-111 on Friday to take a 3-0 stranglehold on their NBA Western Conference playoff series as the New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks notched big home wins. The Knicks had Madison Square Garden rocking with a dominant 99-79 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers that put New York up 2-1. The Hawks clawed back to 2-1 after dropping the first two games against the Celtics in Boston with a 130-122 triumph. Atlanta crucially avoided falling into a 3-0 hole -- a deficit no NBA team has ever recovered from to win a best-of-seven series. And that's exactly where Western Conference top seeds Denver have the Timberwolves after two-time reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Jokic's seventh career playoff triple-double. Jokic scored 20 points with 11 rebounds and 12 assists, and when he was limited by foul trouble in the third quarter his teammates kept the pressure on. Michael Porter Jr scored 25 points to lead six Nuggets players in double figures and Denver's reserves out-scored the Timberwolves bench 29-10. They kept the Timberwolves at bay despite a sparkling 36 points from Anthony Edwards, whose three-pointer early in the third pulled Minnesota within three points. They were down by five with less than five minutes remaining, but couldn't break through. Jokic, who led the league with 29 triple-doubles in the regular season, said he knows they'll be even more determined on Sunday to prevent a sweep on their home floor. "We know they're going to go even more aggressive in two days," Jokic said. "So we just need to keep our composure and we know what to expect." In New York, Jalen Brunson scored 21 points and RJ Barrett added 19 for the Knicks, who rebounded from a humbling game two defeat in Cleveland. The Knicks' suffocating defense contributed to a dismal night for Cleveland's Darius Garland, who missed 17 of his 21 shot attempts on the way to 10 points. Donovan Mitchell scored 22 to lead the Cavs, who became the first team this season to be held under 80 points in an NBA game. To top it off, Garland -- who scored 32 points in the Cavs' win on Tuesday -- needed treatment on his left ankle in the second half after stepping on a courtside photographer's foot. The game was the first playoff contest at Madison Square Garden in two years and the "chaos" that New York native and Cavs star Mitchell predicted materialized. Both teams made sloppy starts in the raucous atmosphere, but the Knicks steadied to take a 13-point halftime lead that they pushed to as many as 27. "This was great," said Brunson, but he warned that the Cavs would punch back in game four on Sunday. "You want to carry it over, but at the same time we've got to be focused, we've got to be ready to go." In Atlanta, Trae Young scored 32 points and Dejounte Murray added 25 as the hot-shooting Hawks clawed back into their series against the Celtics. Young shook off two sub-par performances with a stellar display, connecting on 12 of 22 shots from the field with six rebounds and nine assists. "Our whole team was making plays all night and it was up to me to go make the right one," Young said. "It's not only to score, sometimes it's to get everybody involved." He also produced a pair of blocks as the Hawks out-hustled the second-seeded Celtics -- who fell to Golden State in the NBA Finals last year. Jayson Tatum scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Boston. Marcus Smart added 24 and Jaylen Brown had 15 for the Celtics, who drained 21 three-pointers but were out-rebounded 48-29. Smart said there was no secret to the Hawks' advantage on the boards, which led to their 23-9 edge in second-chance points. "It's just a matter of will," Smart said, "and they wanted it more tonight." Tatum still had a chance to tie it with 58.1 seconds left but his three-point attempt bounced off the rim and the Hawks pulled away. "I've got to play better," said a dejected Tatum, who said he made too many untimely turnovers and poor decisions. "This one tonight is on me." Atlanta will try to level the series when they host game four on Sunday. The post Nuggets take 3-0 lead over Timberwolves, Knicks dominate Cavs appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Kings shame Warriors
WASHINGTON (AFP) — De’Aaron Fox scored 38 points and Malik Monk added 32 off the bench in leading the Sacramento Kings to a 126-123 victory over Golden State for their first National Basketball Association playoff triumph in 17 years. The Kings, who had not reached the post-season since 2006, seized a 1-0 lead over the defending champions in a Western Conference best-of-seven first round series that continues in Sacramento on Monday. In Eastern Conference playoff series openers on Saturday, the New York Knicks edged host Cleveland 101-97, Boston routed Atlanta 112-99 and Philadelphia beat Brooklyn 121-101. Fox made 13-of-27 shots in his playoff debut, 4-of-8 from 3-point range, and 8-of-12 free throws then after the victory pushed the button to send the Kings’ laser light — symbolic of a Kings victory — from the outside of the arena. Monk sank 8-of-13 from the floor and 2-of-4 from 3-point range plus all 14 of his free throws. He made two late free throws to create the final margin and Stephen Curry missed a final 3-point shot for the Warriors to force overtime. Reserve Trey Lyles added 16 points and NBA rebounds leader Domantas Sabonis had 12 points and 16 rebounds for Sacramento. “Our bench came in and they did a hell of a job tonight, especially Malik and Trey. They ignited us,” Fox said. “We knew we had to go out and be physical — try not to foul because this is probably the best free throw shooting team in the league — and get it done on the defensive end and we got some key stops.” Fox caught fire in the second half and Sacramento used a late 7-0 run for a 119-114 lead that put the hosts ahead to stay. “In the second half, I got into a rhythm, my teammates continued to hit me in my spot and I just did what they want me to do,” Fox said. Curry led Golden State with 30 points while Klay Thompson added 21. At Cleveland, Jalen Brunson scored 21 of his 27 points in the second half to lead New York’s victory while the Cavaliers were led by 38 points from Donovan Mitchell. A late Brunson miss was rebounded by New York’s Julius Randle, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and that set up two clinching Knicks free throws by Quentin Grimes. “They just kept fighting,” Brunson said. “We kept our composure. Made plays down the stretch, made a couple of huge stops. We just kept fighting, kept sticking together and stayed poised.” NBA scoring champion Joel Embiid had 26 points while NBA assists champion James Harden added 23 points and 13 assists in the Sixers’ romp. The host Sixers, who led the NBA in 3-point shooting percentage, sank a club playoff record 21 3-pointers in 43 attempts. “(That) was a good win for us,” Harden said. “We’ll be watching film. Game two is going to be the toughest game of the series for us. We’ll be ready to go.” Cameroonian star Embiid went 7-of-15 from the floor and 11-of-11 from the free throw line. Harden hit 7-of-13 from 3-point range and helped eight Sixers in all make 3-pointers. “Just finding ways to impact the game possession by possession,” said Harden, a former Nets backcourt star. “It’s the playoffs. Things don’t go the way you want as much as you want them to. You’ve got to keep pushing, keep fighting, and I’m happy we got a win.” Philadelphia made a club one-half playoff record of 13 3-pointers on the way to a 67-58 halftime edge. Brooklyn’s Mikal Bridges scored a game-high 30 points, but only seven in the second half. The Celtics ripped visiting Atlanta 112-99 behind 29 points and 12 rebounds from Jaylen Brown and 25 points and 11 rebounds from Jayson Tatum. Brown played with a wrapping on cut fingers and a protective mask he has had for two months due to a facial fracture. “Got to come out and be ready to go,” he said. “My team depends on me. My city depends on me. I don’t make no excuses. I come out and play ball.” The post Kings shame Warriors appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Kings edge Warriors in NBA playoff thriller as Sixers, Celtics roll

Embiid, Harden spark 76ers over Nets in NBA playoff opener
Joel Embiid scored 26 points and James Harden added 23 to lead the Philadelphia 76ers over the Brooklyn Nets 121-101 in an NBA first-round playoff series opener on Saturday. The host Sixers, who led the NBA in 3-point shooting percentage, sank a club playoff record 21 3-pointers in 43 attempts to seize a 1-0 lead in the Eastern Conference best-of-seven opening series, which continues Monday in Philadelphia. "(That) was a good win for us," Harden said. "We'll be watching film. Game two is going to be the toughest game of the series for us. We'll be ready to go." Also winning an East series opener were the Boston Celtics, who ripped Atlanta 112-99. Embiid, the NBA season-scoring leader with 33.1 points a game, was often double-teamed defensively by the Nets but effectively brought teammates into scoring positions. The Cameroonian 7-footer (2.13m) went 7-of-15 from the floor but was 11-of-11 from the freethrow line and contributed five rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and a steal. NBA season assists leader Harden, who hit 7-of-13 from 3-point range, made 13 assists. He became the first player in 76ers history with 20 points, 10 assists and five 3-pointers in one contest. He also helped eight Sixers in all to make 3-pointers. "Just finding ways to impact the game possession by possession," said Harden, a former Nets backcourt star. "It's the playoffs. Things don't go the way you want as much as you want them to. You've got to keep pushing, keeping fighting, and I'm happy we got a win." In the times the Nets stifled Embiid, Harden picked them apart with inside moves, skilled shotmaking and precision passing. "I've been doing it for a very, very long time at the highest level so it's pretty easy," Harden said. "As long as I get into the paint and create good shots, I'm doing my job. Most of the time my teammates are making the shots." Philadelphia made a club one-half playoff record of 13 3-pointers on the way to a 67-58 halftime edge. While excited at the triumph, Harden tried to keep a perspective on the first step in a two-month playoff chase for the championship. "Stay even keel," he said. "There are going to be some good moments, some low moments. You win a game. You lose a game. Stay even keel and look at the bigger picture." Brooklyn's Mikal Bridges scored a game-high 30 points, but only seven in the second half. At Boston, Jaylen Brown scored 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Celtics over Atlanta. He played with a wrapping on cut fingers and a protective mask he has had for two months due to a facial fracture. "Got to come out and be ready to go," he said. "My team depends on me. My city depends on me. I don't make no excuses. I come out and play ball." Jayson Tatum added 25 points and 11 rebounds while Derrick White contributed 24 points for Boston, which used a 20-3 second-quarter run to seize a 74-44 half-time lead. Atlanta, led by Dejounte Murray's 24 points, rallied in the second half but could not mount a sustained threat. "Starts on defense," Brown said. "Coming out and being locked in defensively. That's a good young team. We've got to give them respect and come out and play them tight and stay aggressive." Brown wants to avoid second-half fades after building big leads. "That's the journey for us, to stay and keep that mentality locked in throughout the playoffs, 48 minutes throughout the game," he said. "Tonight we waned a little bit but we will pick it up as the playoffs go on." Saturday's other Eastern Conference first-round series opener finds New York at Cleveland while the Western Conference opener sends defending champion Golden State to Sacramento, where the host Kings make their first playoff appearance since 2006.
