Alcohol banned at Tokyo Halloween hotspot
A ban on alcohol came into force around Tokyo's tourist hotspot Shibuya on Friday in an attempt to discourage raucous Halloween gatherings a year after a deadly crowd crush in South Korea. Nearly 160 people were crushed to death in a narrow alleyway in Seoul on 29 October last year after tens of thousands of people poured into the Itaewon neighborhood to celebrate Halloween. In Tokyo, tens of thousands of people, Japanese and foreign alike, have thronged the narrow streets around Shibuya in past years, many dressed up in Instagram-ready zombie costumes. The crowds have slowed down emergency services attempting to reach people in need. "We're extremely concerned accidents similar to the fatal case in Itaewon in Seoul last October could happen anytime," the district's mayor Ken Hasebe said this month. Ahead of this weekend, a video released by authorities in Japanese and English focused also on the annoyances caused to locals such as vandalism, litter, and noise. "This Halloween night everyone should stay away from Shibuya. Some people live in Shibuya," the video message said. "Violence. Drinking on the street. Smoking on the street. Traffic violation. You can't choose how your actions will affect others." Billboards have been put up and a famous statue of Hachiko the faithful dog that is a popular meeting place outside Shibuya Station was also set to be covered up with a temporary enclosure. Some residents welcomed the restrictions. "I think it's a fair decision because I find that these celebrations have become more and more excessive in recent years," said Ryosuke Yamazaki, 35. "If this were to get even worse than before there could be a disaster or even something on the order of what happened in South Korea," he told AFP. Kosuke Kimura, 21, called the restrictions "entirely appropriate". But US tourist Laura Williamee, 35, said it was "very disappointing". "I booked this flight a while ago and I was looking forward to being in Shibuya for Halloween... (but) I understand it can get dangerous," she told AFP. "I think they do have the right idea and they want to protect the people and all the tourists and stuff, so I do understand. I'm not upset about it. It is just disappointing." How Jake Cuenca created ‘Iron Heart’s’ rock-star villain Eros
“It has to be two words: rock star.” That was Jake Cuenca’s reply when we asked him to describe his Eros character in The Iron Heart during the show’s finale mediacon recently. Playing Eros, who in the series becomes a perfect foil to Richard Gutierrez’s Apollo character, is something that Cuenca relished, as he was given a free hand to “personalize” his attack on it. Cuenca, consummate artist that he is, really invested in his character, something that he learned from the late actor Eddie Garcia. He bought his own prop guns and accessories and gave his character his own distinct sartorial taste. “With Eros, as fun as it was to portray him, it’s very, very challenging. There are times na when you’re exhausted on the set, kapag pagod na pagod ka na, sometimes it’s hard to try to keep the voice, sometimes it’s hard to keep the accent kasi pagod ka na, eh, so you try to get it right, you try to do it right,” he said. For the first time, revealed Cuenca, he didn’t go out of character even in his free time. “I was never out of character with this one to the point na even in my free time I was trying to find him all the time kasi I really enjoyed myself. One thing I’ll never forget about this role, this is the first time they really allowed me to really put layers, to put an accent, to put on a voice, to change things. They allowed me to personalize it.” The series’ finale is one for the books as it will be shot abroad and will involve katana fighting. “I’ve been training for this for two weeks now. It’s gonna be intense,” he said. While it’s Cuenca’s first time to be wielding a katana sword, sword-fighting isn’t new to him as “I’ve done it in the past like kami ni Coco (Martin) sa Panday. His promise for the series’ finale: “I think our ending is beautiful. Itong ending na ito, it’s very, very emotional, it’s very, very intense pero lalaking-lalaki ‘yung eksena,” he said. Photoshoot for P1 million loot This talent manager’s greed for money has reached colossal proportions. We’re saying this because we were informed that this manager duped her wards one time into believing all they were doing was just a pictorial. The manager gathered five of her wards and told them it had been a time that they had recent photos. So a pictorial was set pronto. But that wasn’t all there was to it. Without the wards knowing, the photoshoot was in fact for billboards and other collaterals to promote the cold-cuts products of a politician -businessman from the North with whom the talent manager has had long ties. When the manager was issued checks worth P1 million, she told the politician-businessman to keep mum about it and not tell her wards that it was for their services rendered. Why was the talent manager confident that her secret would not be discovered by her wards? Because they didn’t frequent the North. Rolling Stones album of new songs out next month
The Rolling Stones will release their first album of new music in 18 years next month, lead singer Mick Jagger, fellow founding bandmate Keith Richards and bass guitarist Ronnie Wood announced Wednesday in London. The album, "Hackney Diamonds", is the first since the death of drummer Charlie Watts in 2019, and the first containing original material since 2005's "A Bigger Bang". "We didn't want to make just any record and put it out," Jagger, 80, told a launch event at the Hackney Empire theatre in east London, hosted by US talk show host Jimmy Fallon and livestreamed on YouTube. "I'm not saying we're big-headed about it but we're pleased with it and we hope you all like it," the octogenarian rocker said. The Stones' 24th studio album, set for release on October 20, has 12 tracks, with the single "Angry" the first to come out. Wood, 76, confirmed during the launch that superstar Lady Gaga features on another, "Sweet Sound of Heaven", adding she "sings really sweet" on it. Two of the tracks were recorded with Watts in 2019. The others feature Steve Jordan, whom Watts recommended to replace him. "Ever since Charlie's gone it's different," said 79-year-old guitarist Keith Richards of recording the new album without one of the band's founders. "He's number four, he's missing, he's up there. Of course he's missed incredibly." Already acclaimed "Hackney diamonds" is English slang for the shards of glass left scattered on the ground after smash-and-grab robberies, and refers to the historically working class east London neighbourhood. "It's like when you get your windscreen broken on a Saturday night in Hackney," Jagger joked. Throngs of people crowded outside the event venue, including those without tickets who came out of curiosity and hoping to spot the band. "I've been following the Stones since I was four years old and I'm from round here -- it's my backyard," said musician and fan Rory McGlinchey. "It's crazy that they're here!" Wearing a Rolling Stones t-shirt, he said the new release was "great news". "Can't wait," he told AFP. Critics have already hailed the release as the band's best work in many decades. Will Hodgkinson, rock and pop critic for Britain's The Times newspaper, said it is "unquestionably the best Stones album since 1978's 'Some Girls'". "Variously poignant, irreverent, anarchic and, in one gospel-tinged moment, quite spiritual, it touches on all the aspects we love about the band, glued together by the rambunctious energy they have made their own since the early Sixties," he wrote. The Daily Telegraph's music reviewer Neil McCormick said "Angry" was "their best single in four decades". The Stones also unveiled the single's typically rock'n'roll video. It sees the band playing from Los Angeles' billboards as scantily-dressed, leather-clad "Euphoria" actress Sydney Sweeney writhes to the soundtrack in the back of a convertible red Mercedes driving through the city. Teaser The Rolling Stones' last studio album was 2016's "Blue & Lonesome", which was made up of blues covers. "We've been very lazy," said Jagger. "We've been on the road most of the time." The band teased the release of the new album through a spoof advert in the local Hackney Gazette newspaper. The cryptic ad, which also appeared in sister title the Islington Gazette, referenced several of the band's best-known songs including "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", "Gimme Shelter" and "Shattered". The ad went on: "Opening our new store on Mare Street, September 2023. Our friendly team promises you satisfaction when you say gimme shelter we'll fix your shattered windows." Clues that the ad was not for a bona fide east London glass repair business included a miniature version of the band's famed lips logo to dot the letter i. The ad -- in the same font as the "Some Girls" album -- also says the firm was established in 1962, the same year the band was formed. Last year the Stones travelled through Europe for their 60th anniversary tour which featured stops in cities including Madrid, Milan and Munich, and also a performance at British Summer Time (BST) festival in London. Asked for the secret to their decades-spanning musical marriage, Jagger quipped: "not speaking too often". "How to say shut up politely," added Richards. Meralco assures readiness to respond to impact of Southwest monsoon
The Manila Electric Company has assured its customers that its personnel are ready to immediately respond to power outages that may result from the southwest monsoon currently being experienced in parts of its franchise area. This comes as the state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the southwest monsoon was enhanced by Severe Tropical Storm Hanna (international name: Haikui) which is currently inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, as well as Super Typhoon Saola and Tropical Storm Kirogi. The southwest monsoon is expected to bring gusty conditions over Bulacan, Metro Manila, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, and the northern portion of Eastern Visayas until 1 September. “As a 24–hour service company, we are ready to respond to these types of emergency. Our crews are on standby to attend to any trouble that may affect our facilities in areas that might be affected by the inclement weather,” Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga said. Zaldarriaga added that Meralco has put in place necessary measures to mitigate the possible impact of monsoon rains, including the issuance of advisories on appropriate precautionary measures. The company has consistently requested billboard owners and operators to temporarily roll their billboards up to prevent these structures from being toppled by the strong winds. Meralco also advised its customers to continue practicing electrical safety measures which are very important especially when there is flooding. • Ensure that the main electrical power switch or circuit breaker is off. Be sure to be dry when being in contact with any electrical facility. • Unplug appliances from wall sockets. Turn off permanently connected equipment and unscrew all light bulbs if possible. • Remove mud and dirt from service equipment or main circuit breaker/fuse and its enclosure using rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes. • Make sure that all electrical wires, connectors, and other wiring devices are completely dry. • When all electrical wires and accessories have dried and are clean, the wiring system of all appliances must be checked by a licensed electrician. Do not turn on flood-damaged electrical appliances. Zaldarriaga also urged the public to keep all channels of communication open and ready and charge mobile phones, laptops, radios, and other communication gadgets. Customers may tune in to the different public service radio stations should power interruptions occur. To report power outages and other concerns, customers may reach Meralco through its official social media pages on Facebook (www.facebook.com/meralco) and Twitter (@meralco). They may also text their concerns to 0920-9716211 and 0917-5516211 or contact the Meralco Hotline at 16211 and 8631-1111. Baghdad billboards shut after one shows porn
An advertising screen in a busy intersection of Baghdad, Iraq showed a pornographic film for several minutes Saturday evening before it was turned off, prompting authorities to order the shutdown of all LED billboards in the capital. A security source who requested anonymity told Agence France-Presse that a hacker was responsible for the indecent show in Uqba bin Nafia Square. The interior ministry also announced in a statement that a suspect had been arrested, without giving details. Videos of the pornographic film being screened as cars passed by in central Baghdad were widely shared on social media. The anonymous official said security measures are being reviewed while the billboards are turned off. Largely-conservative Iraq announced in 2022 that it was planning to block pornographic websites, but many have been left accessible. The Iraqi government, which is dominated by pro-Iranian parties, has targeted several YouTubers and TikTokers since last year, accusing them of sharing “indecent content” that goes “against morals and traditions.” Some of them have been imprisoned, including a young woman who posted videos dancing to pop music. Power restored in Binondo area affected by collapsed Meralco post
The local government of Manila reported the return of the power supply to the affected areas in Binondo, Manila on Friday at 8:45 a.m. This was disclosed by city electrician officer Engr. Randy Sadac, wherein the Meralco engineering team responding to the incident of a collapsed electrical post had worked around the clock the since Thursday to replace the fallen post with a new one. In a phone interview with Sadac, he said that 15 big establishments were heavily affected by brownouts which lasted for almost 18 hours while power was restored at 8:45 am this Friday. Sadac said that aside from the inspection on the repair job, their teams have also restored street lights that are connected to the collapsed post. He also notified Telco firms to transfer or modify their line connections that were attached to the post. "Kinausap na rin namin ang mga telcos na sumasabit sa mga meralco post. Minsan sa tagal na rin, yung mga lumang linya na hindi na gumagana naka kabit pa rin “ Sadac said in a Daily Tribune interview. Further, the city electrician office, together with Meralco, conducts regular inspections of all electrical posts as part of their regular operations together with the bundling of wires and retirement of wooden and leaning posts, The city electrician office also recently conducted an inventory of all electrical posts in the city. Also during the incident, three individuals suffered minor injuries and are being treated at home while 11 vehicles including one bicycle had been damaged which caused heavy traffic in the area. Meanwhile . the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) instructed BFP Chief Louie Puracan to immediately probe the incident that happened in Binondo, where several electric posts collapsed hurting three individuals and damaging eight parked vehicles. The BFP has also been instructed to coordinate with the private electric company that owns the electric posts to provide assistance to the affected individuals and help in clearing out the area. In the same breath, all local government units (LGUs) are enjoined to inspect electric posts, construction sites, billboards, and other similar installations that may collapse during heavy rains. A memorandum circular will be issued regarding the matter to ensure compliance and prompt action. Pope says ‘anguished cry’ of abuse victims must be heard
Pope Francis said Wednesday that the "anguished cry" of victims of clerical sexual abuse must be heard as he began a visit to Portugal, where a recent report found thousands of cases spanning decades. Addressing the clergy at Lisbon's vast Jeronimos Monastery, the pontiff said some people viewed the Church "with disappointment and anger" due to "the scandals that have marred her face". These scandals "call us to a humble and ongoing purification, starting with the anguished cry of the victims, who must always be accepted and listened to", he added. A report released in February by an independent commission concluded that at least 4,815 children had been abused by clergy members, mostly priests, in Portugal since 1950. The inquiry -- similar to audits elsewhere in Europe and the Americas -- concluded that the Church hierarchy had "systematically" tried to conceal the abuse. Before those findings, top Portuguese church officials maintained there had been only a few such cases. The results of the inquiry have tainted the institution in the Catholic-majority country and led the Portuguese Roman Catholic Church to apologise to the victims. A July poll by Lisbon's Catholic University of Portugal found 68 percent of all Portuguese felt the Church's image had deteriorated. According to the Portuguese Bishops' Conference and a local organising committee, Francis will meet abuse victims privately, though it has not yet been included in the official programme. A support group for victims has put up three large billboards in Lisbon close to places that will host events attended by the pope to denounce clerical sexual abuse. The billboards read: "4,800+ children abused by the Catholic Church in Portugal". The pope, who was elected by his peers in 2013, has told bishops around the world they must adhere to a policy of "zero tolerance" for clergy who sexually abuse children. He held an unprecedented summit on clerical sexual abuse the following year and has enacted reforms that include new obligations to report abuse and cover-ups. AI tools threaten to upend ad industry
Data-driven algorithms supercharged the advertising industry by enabling precisely targeted campaigns, but new AI tools may be about to shake the sector once again. Some brands are dipping their toes in the AI waters, like Coca-Cola, which has invited people to create AI works using "iconic creative assets from the Coca-Cola digital archives". Others are using it to create a social media buzz -- fashion firm Stradivarius recently pushed out AI images based on one of its collections. But the full force of the AI revolution may be felt most keenly in the engine room of the ad industry -- the agencies who conceive and design the campaigns. "We're only at the beginning," said Fernando Pascual, vice-president of design at Spanish company Seedtag. His firm specializes in "contextual" advertising, which they claim will enable digital ads to blend in with the website where they appear. So a car ad might show the vehicle driving through a glass and steel cityscape on a business-orientated website, but the same car might be seen cruising past peaceful suburban gardens on a family-friendly website. "The main element of advertising is still anchored in reality," he told AFP. "We're just helping our clients to be more relevant." Seedtag is far from the only ad agency promoting its AI chops. But photographers and models are among those left wondering about their future livelihoods. 'Uproar' French lingerie firm Undiz recently found itself at the center of the debate. Billboards in brilliant blue with eerily beautiful models gliding underwater in the firm's swimwear have appeared across France in recent weeks. Only, there were no real people in these posters. The models were created by an ad agency using image generator Midjourney, with real images of the swimming costumes added later. "We wanted to achieve a slightly dreamlike, intriguing result," Undiz director Isolde Andouard told AFP. Andouard admitted that the campaign had caused "uproar" among models and photographers. Thomas Serer, a popular French content creator and photographer, wrote on Twitter that he was a fan of AI but in this case "using AI adds zero value" apart from allowing the firm to save money. Andouard was quick to deny the approach was simply about cutting costs, saying the AI campaign was rolled out alongside traditional photos. 'Non-event' The reaction to the Undiz campaign suggests the path to AI domination will be far from smooth. And they are not the only company to have received criticism. Jeans brand Levi's trumpeted a partnership with Dutch studio Lalaland.ia in March with the promise of using AI models to boost diversity on its online shop. After an outcry, the firm put out another statement saying its announcement "did not properly represent certain aspects of the programme" and promised to continue working with models and photographers. There are plenty who doubt that such upfront uses will ever really go industry-wide. Olivier Bomsel, an economist specializing in intellectual property and advertising, said the arrival of AI-manipulated images was a "non-event" and amounted to just a new kind of digital editing. And as AI tools get more widespread, he said, the people whose images provide the training data will be able to claim fees that will eventually "cost as much as using a model". And the arrival of AI behemoths Meta and Google into the space is sending heads spinning. Both firms announced in May a series of simplified AI tools that promise to allow anyone to design ad campaigns just using simple phrases as prompts. It remains to be seen whether this will give ad agencies a shiny new plaything -- or torpedo their business models entirely. Knocking on Goliath’s Doors
Most people love a David vs. Goliath story, cheering when the underdog comes out on top, defying all odds and expectations. In all probability, part of the attraction comes from how seldom it happens. In the consumer goods corporate arena, for example, what we’ll read about more often is how some creative, forward-looking, independent enterprise is gobbled up by a multinational, or big player. So here’s something that’s different, a David calling on the Goliaths to partner with ‘him,’ to forge something collaborative, rather than adversarial or acquisitive. Founders of the Australian-based social enterprise, Thankyou, Daniel and Justine Flynn Thankyou is an Australian social enterprise founded in 2008 by a group of university students. Offering consumer products – personal care and baby product ranges – in Australia and New Zealand, their mission vision and business model is to make and distribute the Thankyou products to help end extreme poverty. As Daniel Flynn, Thankyou co-founder with his wife Justine and Jarryd Burns, reminds us, ‘With $63 trillion spent on consumer goods each year while 736 million people are stuck in extreme poverty (based on WB, OECD data), we believe that business as usual is broken. But we also believe that we, together with people and a partnership with one of the two biggest companies in the world, can change this by funneling the dollars spent on consumer goods into helping extreme poverty.” To achieve this, and drum up attention to their ‘call’ to P&G and Unilever to make and distribute Thankyou products globally; Thankyou has embarked on a global Social Media campaign, No Small Plan. The ‘plan’ is to muster enough global viral support that one of these giants will take notice, and team up with Thankyou. It’s the collective impact of voices around the world that Thankyou is asking for. To show our support, Thankyou is asking us to:– Post a photo or share the campaign social title with the caption ‘I’m in, are you?’ – Tag @proctergamble and @unilever. – Hashtag #thankyoutotheworld. – Share Thankyou’s video to help spread this even further. And you might have begun seeing these ‘I’m in, are you?’ IG posts, wondering what they were all about. A Thankyou-funded water supply & sanitation project in Asia. Thankyou will then set virtual meetings with both consumer goods giants – this to happen at the end of the social campaign. And on November 5th, Thankyou will announce which multinational will be their partner, on one of the largest and most iconic digital billboards of the world, New York City’s Time Square. It’s a daring gambit by this company that is as much social movement and engaged community, as it is distributor of consumer goods. To date, Thankyou has raised over A$17 million for their impact partners serving the world’s poorest populations. They’ve helped over 857,000 people in over 20 countries, from Asia to Africa; addressing water, health, sanitation, economic development programs, maternal and child health programs in low-income communities. Tackling extreme poverty, the supported programs and impact partners help alleviate the problems of people living on less than $1.90/day. Thankyou doing something for Education in Africa. To date, the verdict is still out on to what extent this COVID pandemic will affect the global economy. Needless to say, we can be certain that the gap between the rich and the poor will only widen, inequalities heightened. Thankyou offers a new business model, where it’s not just the CSR programs that reach out to ameliorate social ills; but that the business model itself gets a much-needed makeover. Make your voice heard if you share in Thankyou’s vision of tomorrow......»»
