Village chief aspirant dies in ambush
ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Lanao del Sur Provincial Police on Wednesday reported that a barangay chairperson candidate in Barangay Sigayan, Kapatagan town in Lanao del Sur was killed while his wife and son were injured after armed men ambushed them. Lanao del Sur Provincial Police director Col. Robert S. Daculan identified the fatality as Kamar Bilao Bansil, who is running for barangay chairperson in Barangay Sigayan in the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections. Meantime, the fatality’s wife — identified as Jasmin and his son Manmo — both sustained gunshot wounds in different parts of their bodies. They were immediately rushed to a hospital by policemen and emergency responders from the Kapatagan local government unit. Daculan also identified the leader of the armed group as Pabil Pagrangan, the husband of Sigayan’s incumbent village chair. Initial reports disclosed that Bansil was driving his multi-cab vehicle with his wife and son on board when they were fired upon by the group of Pagrangan who positioned themselves along the road of Sigayan. Bansil was supposed to contest the re-election bid of Pagrangan’s wife, the incumbent barangay chair of Sigayan. Daculan said policemen are now conducting a hot pursuit operation against Pagrangan who fled with his cohorts to the different directions after the incident. Presidential aspirant pushes dollarization, central bank abolition
Argentine presidential candidate Javier Milei, a proponent of dollarization, is vowing to scrap the country’s central bank to address inflation and peso devaluation. “Ending inflation is possible, we just have to take the monetary weapon away from politicians,” the 52-year-old lawmaker, referring to the central bank, said. With annual inflation at 113 percent, and a peso that was devalued by 20 percent this month, experts say the lure of Milei’s dollarization idea is that many Argentines feel they have nothing to lose. The United States dollar has long been a refuge for Argentines from pesos which lose value faster than they can spend them. Citizens bypass strict currency controls to buy dollars from a flourishing parallel market and squirrel them away at home in what is often their only viable means of savings. Argentina pegged the peso to the dollar at a one-to-one convertible rate in the 1990s as a way out of hyperinflationary cycles of up to 3,000 percent. After a decade, the fixed exchange rate became untenable and in 2001, the government uncoupled the peso from the dollar, leading its value to plummet and causing a run on banks as people’s savings were wiped out. Panic, looting and protests led to 39 deaths in social unrest that followed. A few days after the devaluation, Argentina defaulted on its foreign debt, further deepening its economic and social crisis. Dollarization involves replacing a currency entirely with the US dollar, which offers a more stable currency, but removes government control of monetary policy — such as setting interest rates or taking measures to target inflation. In Latin America, Ecuador, El Salvador and Panama have adopted the dollar as their main currency. Village chief aspirant survives ambush
TACLOBAN CITY — Authorities reported on Friday that a barangay chairman aspirant was ambushed by still unidentified gunmen in Gandara town, Samar province which also saw the death of his two companions. Police identified the aspiring village chairman as Teresito Piczon, who was wounded when the motorboat they were riding was fired upon by unidentified men hiding on the hilly part as they were about to moor on the village port. Another individual identified as Marvin Taduyo also survived the ambush, while the other two — identified as Sammy Jumadiao and Rolando Casaljay — died in the ambush. The four are residents of Barangay Caugbusan, a village at the boundary of Gandara and Santa Margarita towns some 20 kilometers from the town proper and accessible only either by boat or foot. Reports also disclosed that Casaljay was able to run but was chased by the gunmen, who took turns in hitting him with rifle butts on the different parts of his body, causing his death. The armed group, allegedly led by a certain Alyas Piyos, immediately fled to the mountain side of the village by foot immediately after the incident. The wounded victims were immediately brought to the Gandara District Hospital. The post Village chief aspirant survives ambush appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Gibbons relishes Malacañang visit
It wasn’t his first time, but American boxing promoter Sean Gibbons was still tickled pink when he got the meet President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday afternoon at Malacanang. Previously, Gibbons had the opportunity to meet President Rodrigo Duterte some years back when Jerwin Ancajas was still reigning as world champion. But this latest trip was even more special. Instead of accompanying just one world champion, Gibbons was there to join Marlon Tapales and Melvin Jerusalem, two of the country’s current titleholders. “It was an unforgettable experience,” Gibbons said from Tokyo while waiting for his connecting flight to the mainland United States after spending a few days in Manila. Tapales is coming off a rousing victory over Murodjon Akhmadaliev of Uzbekistan to snatch the World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation super-bantamweight title belts in San Antonio, Texas. Jerusalem had won his—the World Boxing Organization minimumweight title—early this year via a second-round knockout in Osaka, Japan. Also on hand was the Filipino promoter of Tapales and Jerusalem—JC Mananquil of General Santos City. Gibbons swears he is looking forward to another trip to the Palace. And that could take place pretty soon as bantamweight Vincent Astrolabio is getting ready for his shot at the vacant WBO diadem scheduled 13 May in Stockton, California. If Astrolabio doesn’t win it, Gibbons has another world title aspirant in Jade Bornea, who is challenging Argentinian Fernando Martinez on 24 June in Minneapolis. Don’t be surprised if Gibbons ends up becoming a frequent Malacanang visitor. The post Gibbons relishes Malacañang visit appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
