Kerry Sports Manila, a comprehensive lifestyle and leisure club in the Metro, was one with the international wellness community in celebrating the 7th World Wellness Weekend through Journey to Wellness, a three-day holistic wellness journey that took place from 15 to 17 September. Grounded in the five pillars of wellness, each day featured group activities featuring guided meditation, team encouragement, and synchronous movement toward the goal of improving one’s wellbeing. Here, individuals came together to attend by-the-hour training sessions with a community-centered approach to improving their overall health and fitness. Classes throughout the weekend maximized the club’s facilities. These include low-intensity exercises like reformer Pilates and yoga, high intensity workouts like HIIT and Skillrun Bootcamp by Technogym, and other classes like spinning, rope flow, and animal flow. Kerry Sports Manila, together with Shangri-La The Fort, Manila, is proud to support World Wellness Weekend and promote the critical role physical and mental activity plays in improving our overall health,” said Amit Oberoi, general manager, Shangri-La The Fort, Manila. “World Wellness Weekend and Kerry Sports Manila share the same vision: to empower our members to find their own space at their own pace as they achieve their own personal fitness goals whether for strength building or to combat mental health-related issues. We strongly encourage other health clubs, gyms and studios here locally to join the cause and engage their communities to participate and be active,” he furthered. Journey to Wellness is a testament to Kerry Sports Manila’s mission to provide the community with all that they need to achieve their overall health goals. Beyond the World Wellness Weekend, they continue to strengthen their commitment to provide daily expertise in holistic wellness through accredited trainers, programs, and complete facilities. Big fuss over .02%
The Philippine Stock Exchange index is considered the gauge of the activity in the equities market and, by extension, of the economy since the direction of the line graph indicates the country’s financial health. The index tracks the price movements of a basket of select companies listed on the bourse, representing various sectors of the economy. Investors and market participants use the PSE index as a reference to evaluate the performance of their investment portfolios and make informed investment decisions. The daily movement of the index influences investor confidence and sentiment. Increased investor confidence can stimulate trading activity, attract foreign investments, and encourage local companies to raise capital through initial public offerings or secondary floats. A strong and stable PSE Index can enhance the stock market’s perception as an attractive investment destination. This could attract foreign capital inflows, increase liquidity, and contribute to developing the local capital market. Thus, the impending exit of Metro Pacific Investments Corp., or MPIC, and Aboitiz Power Corp., or APC, from the Philippine Stock Exchange index seems a bit off as both companies are major players in the country’s growth story. Replacing APC and MPIC in the exclusive blue chips club are tycoon Enrique Razon Jr.’s Bloomberry Resorts and the Po family’s Century Pacific Food. The revamp takes effect on Tuesday, 26 September. MPIC is stepping out of the index after its public float dropped to 2.78 percent as part of its program to delist by October. APC’s exclusion from the benchmark was decided on, however, after it missed by a few decimal points of the 20 percent float rule for stocks to be retained in the PSEi. The company purchased 11.4 million shares as part of its buyback program that brought the public float level to below 20 percent, the level required to stay in the PSEi. Based on APC’s report to the market, stocks owned by the public are 19.98 percent of the total listed shares of 7.35 billion. Listed companies are required to have a 10-percent public float, but the elite index members are given a more arduous 20-percent public ownership condition. APC is off by .02 percent. APC’s buyback activities increased non-public scrips to 5.886 billion, bringing the total number of publicly owned shares to 1.47 billion. “Aboitiz Power’s current public ownership levels far exceed the 10-percent minimum public ownership level required for it to remain listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange,” an APC statement to the PSE said. “Even with this stock buyback program, there is no intention to delist from the PSE, but merely to reward our existing shareholders with a larger share of a brighter future,” APC added. The PSEi must accurately reflect the stock market’s overall performance and, in the bigger picture, the economy’s strength. Its composition should go beyond the mere technical criteria to allow a more representative indicator of the daily activity of the market. APC accounts for one out of every five megawatts, or MW, of installed capacity in the country and has some 1,000 MW of renewable energy capacity in the pipeline. In the first half of the year, the company reported a P17.8-billion net income, 79 percent higher than the P10 billion recorded in the same period a year ago. In the second quarter, the company’s net income reached P10.3 billion, 46 percent higher than the P7 billion profit a year ago. The decision to remove a key bourse participant, which also has among the most active shares, is like benching your star player because he forgot to bring a matching pair of socks. Smooth transition between Makati, Taguig urged
A teachers’ group is calling for a smooth transition between the cities of Makati and Taguig to ensure that classes in the affected public schools will not be disrupted by the territorial tension with only a week to go before the opening of classes on 29 August. Teachers’ Dignity Coalition national chairperson Benjo Basas said the two cities should respect the Supreme Court decision, noting that the delivery of education for the learners should not be compromised amid the ongoing tension over a boundary dispute between these two neighboring cities. Noel Meneses, president of the Fort Bonifacio High School Faculty Club, has also called for an immediate resolution on the issue. “We hope the two cities would make an agreement to restore the normal school operations,” Meneses said. According to Meneses, majority of the teachers were affected by the sudden transfer of schools division particularly when the documents are immediately needed for transactions like certifications, assignment orders, permits, or loan applications that are very much needed in time for the beginning of classes. Meneses, who is also speaking on behalf of the local chapter of the TDC, said teachers need to be informed of the situation affecting the two cities because “they are at the frontlines in education, and directly involved with learners, their parents, and the community, and can help the DepEd to disseminate proper information.” Meanwhile, the school principals of the public schools located at the so-called enlisted men’s barrios said they have no problem if the schools are now under the jurisdiction of the local government of Taguig City. Makati Science High School Principal Dr. Felix Bunagan said that the conduct of this year’s “Brigada Eskwela” was a success, which was participated in by Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano. Earlier, students and teachers of the Tigaban High School in East Rembo warmly welcomed Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano who actively engaged in the annual Brigada Eskwela activity. Earlier, West Rembo Elementary School principal Alma Cayabyab Adona said that while the two cities have good intentions, they should focus first on the welfare of the learners to establish a smooth opening of classes. She also reminded her fellow teachers to remain non-partisan and always do the mandate from the Department of Education. “We have no bias as long as the order must come from DepEd. That’s what we’ll stand for. We are not held by anyone,” she said. A total of 14 public schools involving some 1,500 teachers and 30,000 learners are affected by the transition, the TDC said. Basas said that the Department of Education’s central office’s assumption of authority over the affected schools would ease tension and open the door for more friendly talks between the two local government units. “With just a week to the opening of classes, our schools will need to make preparations, and in order to do this, teachers and other school personnel should be allowed to work, business as usual. We hope that things will get better sooner,” Basas said. The post Smooth transition between Makati, Taguig urged appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Trump charged with deleting home camera footage
A new indictment against former United States president Donald Trump lends weight to earlier charges that he allegedly mishandled top-secret documents. The new charge unsealed by federal prosecutors on Thursday alleged that he conspired with his personal aide and a new defendant to delete surveillance footage at his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida in an alleged attempt to cover up illegal possession of classified papers. The new charges came the same day Trump said his lawyers met with Justice Department officials ahead of a separate expected indictment over his alleged efforts to overturn the result of the 2020 election in which he lost to President Joe Biden. The twice-impeached former president was first indicted in the classified documents case last month, accused of endangering national security by holding on to top secret nuclear and defense information after leaving the White House. Trump kept the files — which included records from the Pentagon, Central Intelligence Agency and National Security Agency — unsecured at his home and thwarted official efforts to retrieve them, according to the indictment. Thursday’s superseding indictment accuses the billionaire of acting with his co-defendant in the case, personal aide Waltine “Walt” Nauta, and property manager Carlos de Oliveira, to delete security camera footage at Mar-a-Lago. The fresh charges add to the existing counts of “willful retention of national defense information” and charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice, making false statements and other offenses to which Trump pleaded not guilty last month. It also adds an extra count under the Espionage Act related to Trump allegedly retaining a classified document “concerning military activity in a foreign country.” According to the indictment, citing an audio recording of the interaction, Trump in 2021 allegedly told visitors of his New Jersey golf club of the defense document, “’As president I could have declassified it,’ and ‘Now I can’t, you know, but this is still a secret.’” Trump Thursday night dismissed the new accusations as “ridiculous” during an interview with Fox News Digital. “It’s election interference at the highest level,” he said, blaming his potential campaign opponent Biden and the Justice Department for “prosecutorial misconduct.” The front-runner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary is set to go on trial as the election heats up in May of next year. Mixed reaction over drag queen’s performance
Senators on Thursday gave mixed reactions about the controversial performance of a local drag queen which ignited debates on social media. Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri expressed his disgust over a performance of a local drag artist, describing it as “extremely blasphemous” and “offensive.” “I condemn in the strongest possible terms the extremely blasphemous and offensive video that has gone viral showing people in a club making a mockery of the Christian faith and disrespecting The Lord’s prayer,” Zubiri said in a statement. “In my opinion, this is the height of the misuse and abuse of our freedom of expression that borders on criminal activity,” he added. “It offends the sensibilities of our Christian brothers and sisters, deeply demeans the faith of millions of Filipinos, and dangerously scales the boundaries of protected speech and expression.” The Senate chief is referring to the video clip of Pura Luka Vega’s performance where she was seen lip-synching in a Jesus Christ-like costume to the tune of the upbeat and remixed version of the Christian song “Ama Namin,” the Filipino version of “The Lord’s Prayer.” According to Zubiri, a criminal charge may be filed against Vega under Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code, which punishes those who “offend any race or religion in the performance of obscene or indecent plays, scenes, acts or shows in theaters, fairs, or any other place.” “We urge the authorities to look into this matter,” he said. “We are still tracing the venue. We are also studying the possible violations of law that was committed here.” “Nevertheless, this act merits condemnation not only by Christians but people of all religions whose practice of their faith should not be mocked for private gain or for a few theatrical laughs,” he added. He continued: “My first reaction when I saw the video was extreme disappointment and anger.” “For billions of Christians, The Lord’s Prayer is one of our most solemn prayers during the Holy Eucharist, and to take it out of this context of worship, and use it as material for a comedy bar, is highly insensitive.” The lawmaker, who described himself as a devout Catholic, called on the public to respect one another’s beliefs. “I hope that this behavior will not be repeated in the future. Again, let us respect each other’s beliefs, religious or otherwise, because that is how we build a kinder and gentler society,” he said. ‘Exercise discernment’ Echoing the same sentiment, Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito agreed that the performance was “blasphemous.” On his Twitter account, Ejercito cried foul at the drag queen’s act. “This is blasphemy. This disrespects my faith. This went overboard,” he said. In a separate statement, the lawmaker urged artists to “always exercise discernment” in their craft, stressing that it “may inspire division or worse, aggression.” “While art is generally covered by the freedom of expression, one of the most cherished rights in the Constitution, the extent of such freedom is limited by the exercise of other rights and freedoms, such as the right to practice one’s religious faith in peace and without fear of intimidation,” he said. “In the case at hand, the said performance has stirred hostile feelings towards the Catholic faith. Instead of prompting sober discussions on art and religion, the performance has nudged ad hominem attacks against Filipino Catholics,” he added. Ejercito said that he agrees with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ statement that that objects of faith “should not be used for entertainment purposes, more so, to mock God and his faithful.” “Ama Namin (The Lord’s Prayer) is sacred to us Christians; using it for humor is extremely offensive and disrespectful. Artists should always exercise discernment, as their craft may inspire division or worse, aggression. We should learn to respect each other’s faith and religion,” he said. In a tweet, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian also gave his opinion about the incident. “This is exactly what will destroy our society,” he said. ‘Regrettable’ Meanwhile, Senator Risa Hontiveros, a known ally of the LGBTQ+ community, said she found the drag queen’s performance “regrettable.” “As a woman of faith, I admit I personally find this regrettable. I know that many members of the LGBTQIA+ community, persons of faith among them, also find this regrettable,” Hontiveros said in a separate statement. She, however, stressed that the incident should not be used to “deny the rights and protections to a community that has long been marginalized and excluded.” “I wish for self-reflection, compassion and healing for both the religious and LGBTQIA+ communities. Our platforms should build bridges,” she said. “The struggle for SOGIE Equality continues,” she added. The video, which was uploaded by Vega on Twitter on 10 July quickly circulated on social media and garnered mixed reactions from netizens. As of writing, the video has gained a total of 17.3 million views. The post Mixed reaction over drag queen’s performance appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Go stresses importance of brotherhood, malasakit
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go emphasized the importance of upholding the values of brotherhood, service and malasakit in serving the Filipino people during the induction and oath-taking ceremony of the Davao City Global Eagles Club at Waterfront Insular Hotel in Davao City last Saturday, 24 June. In his speech, Go acknowledged the special connection he feels with the club as a fellow Davaoeño. He likewise expressed his gratitude in becoming a member of the Davao City Global Eagles Club, while highlighting the significance of the Philippine Eagles, which symbolize the city. Go then took the opportunity to express his unwavering support for the country’s uniformed personnel, acknowledging their sacrifices in ensuring the safety and security of the nation. As the vice chair of the Committee on National Defense in the Senate, Go assured his continuous support for the uniformed personnel. He likewise voiced his disapproval towards proposals that could have a negative impact on the existing pension benefits provided to retirees and the anticipated benefits for active service members upon retirement. “They risk their ives in the performance of their duty. That is why I have full support for our uniformed personnel,” he stated. Go, also the Chair of the Committees on Health and Sports highlighted the establishment of Malasakit Centers, which provide accessible healthcare services to the particularly poor and indigent Filipinos. Launched in 2018 and institutionalized through the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019, which Go principally authored and sponsored, the program aims to provide accessible medical and financial assistance to Filipinos through these one-stop shops. Go likewise emphasized the significance of Super Health Centers, which aim to address the need for more medical facilities in remote regions. The senator reaffirmed his dedication to improving access to essential healthcare services as he conducted a site inspection for the Super Health Center in Bantay, Ilocos Sur last Monday, 26. In his speech, Go emphasized the significance of the Super Health Center initiative. He highlighted the need to bring medical services closer to the people, particularly in municipalities that lack adequate health facilities and in far-flung communities. Go personally distributed assistance to struggling Ilocanos in partnership with the local government led by Governor Jerry Singson. In his speech during the activity, Go encouraged the residents to continue wearing masks whenever possible especially in crowded areas and follow health protocols to continue efforts to overcome the spread of COVID-19. Some years ago, some people (others quite gleefully) announced that newspapers were dead. Then came the slew of online platforms that gave birth to what they called “new media.” Underneath all these, came the thought that, of course, newspapers are dead. Years later, and a pandemic, to boot — newspapers are still running, still the most credible source of news and information. The digital natives may never understand the reason some people still turn to the good ol’ “rag,” as it is sometimes called, whether in jest or derogatorily, but it is simply because newspapers are based on something quite basic: Journalism. Journalism — defined by the American Press Institute as “the activity of gathering, assessing, creating and presenting news and information. It is also the product of these activities” — is a craft. It takes training and experience to do good journalism. It takes experience to be a credible journalist. That is why, back then, when paper journos gathered to complain about the preponderance of bloggers in their midst, some would hit it on the mark: Why compare at all when there is really not much comparison? Simply put, broadsheets are not blogs — and never the twain shall meet. They can, however, co-exist. This is precisely the idea behind this paper’s transition from pure print media to an omnimedia organization. Embracing technology — welcoming change and not resisting the results of these changes — led Daily Tribune to traverse a path it did not know before. Over two decades ago, the newspaper was born. It then developed its own website. Then five years ago, under new management, it went into other digital platforms. Through all these, one thing that the paper retained was its commitment to the Filipino people — the core of its calling. Today, Daily Tribune has been recognized anew for its bold and fearless stance. At the 15 June awarding of the Pro Patria Journalism Awards by the Rotary Club of Manila — the first Rotary Club in Asia and the most distinguished for its “star-studded roster of members,” veritable icons in their fields — it received a trophy and plaque as Newspaper of the Year. Pro Patria means “for one’s country”. Daily Tribune President Willie Fernandez spoke about the faith it takes to take on the newspaper business with a commitment to good journalism, indeed, “for one’s country.” He said, “Many times, I have encountered people who wondered how long we would last — and I mean not just those doubting our reasons for staying, but also those who could not see our reason for being.” Like everyone who had stayed true to the call, he added, “I take pride in having stayed true to the Daily Tribune’s DNA of independence. Through four administrations, we boldly reported on issues that many times put our lifeblood at risk. “Thank you for recognizing the effort and determination it took to provide our readers with, as you so describe — ‘the fearless and consistent exposé of anomalies and irregularities both in the public and the private domain, investigating and reporting fairly and truthfully to enable citizens to be vigilant and participatory in forming collective censure and judgment.’” It is not easy, but it can be done. Go cites importance of healthcare access
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go hailed the groundbreaking of the Tarlac City General Hospital in Barangay Binauganan, Tarlac City, in the province of Tarlac on Thursday, 20 April as the city celebrated its 25th Charter Anniversary. As Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, Go was among those who helped push for the construction of the hospital to benefit the residents of Tarlac City and its neighboring areas. In his video message, Go highlighted the importance of investing in healthcare infrastructures to improve the overall health and well-being of the Filipino people. “Access to quality healthcare is a basic human right that every Filipino should be entitled to,” Go said. “That is why I am committed to supporting initiatives that will improve our healthcare system and make it more accessible to those who need it the most,” he added. The event was a significant milestone for the people of Tarlac City, as it marked the beginning of the construction of a state-of-the-art hospital that will provide essential healthcare services to the community. As chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Go has been instrumental in supporting various healthcare programs throughout the country. He has consistently pushed for the allocation of sufficient funds for health services and advocated for initiatives aimed at improving access to healthcare services for Filipinos, especially those living in rural and underserved areas. These include the establishment of Malasakit Centers, Super Health Centers, and specialty centers. Help for the needy On Friday, 21 April, Go reaffirmed his commitment to helping Filipinos in need, especially victims of fires and other crisis situations. He also stressed that he remains focused on improving the country’s healthcare system as he personally provided assistance to indigent residents and fire victims in Calbayog City, Samar. In his speech, Go, who chairs the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, advised the residents to visit Samar Provincial Hospital in nearby Catbalogan City where there is a Malasakit Center ready to assist them with their medical expenses. The senator then shared that he conceived the idea of the Malasakit Centers program to ensure that particularly poor and indigent patients have more convenient access to medical assistance programs by the government. Meanwhile, Go organized relief operations for the struggling residents of Iba, Zambales on 19 and 20 April. The initiative is part of Go’s continuous efforts to help address the needs of Filipinos who require assistance, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pandemic recovery efforts. Go’s outreach team conducted a distribution activity at the Iba Sports Complex gymnasium where they provided masks to a total of 1,427 residents. Select beneficiaries also received additional items, such as cellular phones, shoes, and balls for basketball and volleyball. Also Thursday, Go attended the Philippine Councilors League — Quezon province chapter seminar, with the theme “Quezon province Legislators: Laying the Solid Foundation in Local Legislation for Sustainable Growth and Development,” at the Grand Regal Hotel in Davao City. A staunch advocate for local governance empowerment, Go emphasized in his speech the importance of local government officials in driving development in their respective communities.
