Pope rallies Frenchmen amid debate on meddling
In Marseille, a French Mediterranean city, where Pope Francis has entered an acrimonious European debate on allowing refugees, tens of thousands of people are anticipated to witness the pontiff celebrate mass and process through the streets. Nearly 60,000 people are expected to fill the Velodrome stadium in France’s second-largest city, and up to 100,000 people may line the Avenue du Prado for his “popemobile” tour prior to the Mass. The chairman of an undocumented immigrant group in Marseille, Francky Domingo, expressed his hope that the pope’s visit would “give us back a little hope” and “calm the political tensions.” A “cosmopolitan, multicultural, multireligious” hub, the Mediterranean port “faces enormous difficulties, drug trafficking that claims human lives every day, and the problem of housing,” Domingo continued. In an effort to reverse the deteriorating trend, President Emmanuel Macron has pledged billions of dollars to rebuild the city’s infrastructure after over 40 people were killed in shootings there this year. However, not everybody has praised the Pope’s visit. Left-leaning MPs have criticized Macron’s attendance at Mass on Saturday as a violation of official secularism. Francis has come under fire from right-wingers for “interfering” in domestic politics. Upon his arrival on Friday, the pope fervently urged Europe to accept migrants rather than give in to “fanaticism of indifference” and “paralysis of fear.” The recent wave of large arrivals on the Italian island of Lampedusa has heated up the conversation on immigration. Gerald Darmanin, the French Interior Minister who welcomed the pope upon his arrival, has sworn not to accept a single one. The iconic Notre Dame de la Garde church in Marseille, where sailors have historically prayed for protection and model ships offered in gratitude hang from the roof, was Francis’ first stop when visiting the city. The pontiff urged that “people who are at risk of drowning when abandoned on the waves must be rescued” at a monument that looked out over city rooftops and the glistening Mediterranean. The pope hailed humanitarian organizations for saving migrants in peril at sea and denounced attempts to stop their behavior as “gestures of hate” in unprepared words he added at the conclusion of his speech. PBBM prioritizes development of Phl Agri land
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Saturday reiterated the government’s resolve to prioritize the country’s investments in "development, productivity, and modernization" in the agricultural sector. In his supposed speech for the commemoration of the 36th Cordillera Day, Marcos emphasized the importance of creating huge opportunities for the development of agricultural lands in the country. “As President and concurrent Agriculture Secretary, I am relentlessly pushing and prioritizing the development of our agricultural lands. I cannot emphasize it enough, but we really need to invest in the development, productivity, and modernization of our agricultural sector,” Marcos said, as delivered by Presidential Assistant for Northern Luzon Assistant Secretary Ana Carmela Remigio, during the anniversary event in Luna, Apayao. Marcos sees that such effort would not only increase crop yield for the farmers “but will also create a ripple effect” in the country’s economy. “By building infrastructure and improving market linkages of our farmers, our farmlands will yield not only crops, but also opportunities that create ripples of positive effects throughout our nation,” he added. Marcos was not able to physically attend the scheduled event due to the cancellation of his Apayao province amid the inclement weather. He, however, sent his message for the anniversary event—urging the public “to continue supporting the government’s pursuit of a better, brighter and more productive life for everyone” Marcos emphasized that his administration will continue pushing for a quality life for Filipinos. The President also lauded the Cordillerans for winning over many challenges throughout the years of their autonomy. He urged them to celebrate with “pride and vigor the solidarity, dynamism, and camaraderie among themselves.” “Please allow me to take this opportunity to once again express my utmost gratitude for the overwhelming support you gave me during last year’s national elections. The trust that you have given motivates me to keep going and serve you with passion, strength, and purpose,” Marcos said. Marcos likewise encouraged the Cordillera residents to continue supporting various government projects including the laying down of fiber optic cables to improve the communications and access to the internet in the region. “Support the programs of the Regional Development Council of the Cordillera Administrative Region, which are geared towards inclusive development without destroying the region’s natural heritage,” he said. “The Cordilleras’ potential in terms of hydropower, irrigation, and agriculture is vast and should continue to be tapped for the benefit of all,” he added. Lastly, Marcos assured the Cordillerans that his administration is committed to working hard for the progress of their region. Mayor Sara mulls lifting liquor ban, reopening night market
DAVAO CITY – Mayor Sara Duterte may lift the 24/7 liquor ban, and reopen the bustling Roxas Night Market starting September 1, months after the city government of Davao enforced strict measures to control the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Mayor Sara Duterte (Facebook / MANILA BULLETIN) In her interview over Davao City Disaster Radio (DCDR 87.5) on Friday, Duterte said the local government was aiming to keep the COVID-19 cases here “low and manageable” in preparation for the gradual lifting of strict measures. She said she wanted Dabawenyos to adjust to the new normal, getting used to the basic health protocols amid the pandemic. She added that she might just decide to allow the selling of alcoholic drinks if the local government sees that there will be no spike in the number of COVID-19 cases. “We are still on the liquor ban. Let’s not celebrate too much because what we have lifted is just the FM (food and medicine) pass and curfew because we want you to self-regulate,” she said. The mayor imposed a ban on liquor on April 6, to minimize the possibility of transmitting coronavirus disease (COVID-19) during drinking sessions. As of the July 30, Department of Health-Davao Region has reported 1,273 cases, with 48 deaths and 727 recoveries. Of the total, 856 were in Davao City, 135 in Davao del Norte, 58 in Davao del Sur, 93 in Davao de Oro, 100 in Davao Oriental, and 31 in Davao Occidental. The mayor encouraged the people to instill self-discipline by adhering to basic health protocols, such as staying at home, wearing masks, observing physical distancing, and frequent hand washing to avoid contracting the highly infectious disease. She said once the number of cases goes up, the local government may decide to close the city again. “Otherwise if the cases will continue to go up, we will close again the city which is something that we do not want to happen. Nobody wants to go back to GCQ (general community quarantine), nobody wants to go back to MECQ (modified enhanced community quarantine), and nobody wants to go back to ECQ (enhanced community quarantine,” she said. The Roxas Night Market was closed on March 12, at the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, which displaced 498 food vendors and massage therapists. The night market was a popular destination for street food, ukay-ukay (used clothes), and street massage. On September 2, 2016, a bomb exploded at the night market that killed 15 people and injured 69 others......»»
