Robot’s debut in UK parliament invites ‘Maybot’ mockery

LONDON, United Kingdom--- A walking and talking robot appeared in Britain's parliament for the first time on Tuesday, prompting Twitter users to seize the chance to heap more mockery on Theresa May. The latest round of public amusement at the expense of the British premier came during a committee hearing on artificial intelligence (AI) and "the fourth industrial revolution". MPs on the education committee invited a robot named Pepper--- a white female creation with an excruciatingly thin waist and a tablet computer stuck to her chest--- to answer some basic questions. Asked whether humans would have a place in a brave new world where AI reigns supreme, Pepper responded in a reas...Keep on reading: Robot’s debut in UK parliament invites ‘Maybot’ mockery.....»»

Too small to drink from her mother Rauhin's breast, the baby had to be fed breast milk from a pump, and was kept in an incubator but regularly returned to her mother. Her weight and body temperature have stabilized, and the pattern of her black and white fur has emerged. She is expected to open her eyes in the coming weeks...Keep on reading: It’s a girl! PVL: Cool Smashers want payback, boost semis top seed bid

Creamline tangles with first round tormentor PetroGazz on Wednesday, hoping to get the first of two wins the Cool Smashers need to land the semis top seed in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference at the Batangas City Coliseum. Game time is at 6:00 p.m. and will air live on LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183 and via livestream. The Cool Smashers carry a 9-3 win-loss record and are coming off a five-set defeat at the hands of BanKo last Saturday. A win by Creamline against PetroGazz coupled by another victory over Adamson-Akari on Saturday will give the Cool Smashers a good chance to clinch the top spot for a best-of-three semis showdown with the Angels. But Creamline must win in three or four sets in its last two assignments to get the no. 1 spot in case BanKo defeats Tacloban on Saturday for a two-way tie at 11-3. It will be a tough task for Creamline considering that PetroGazz has been on a tear of late. The Angels won their last three outings for an 8-5 slate.         PetroGazz defeated the Cool Smashers in five sets in their first round meeting in Imus, Cavite that saw the Angels recover from an early deficit to upset Creamline in its debut game.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Yankees get Paxton from Mariners for Sheffield, 2 others

By Ronald Blum, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Left-hander James Paxton was acquired by the Yankees from the Seattle Mariners for a trio of prospects Monday, bolstering the thin starting rotation that contributed to New York's loss to Boston in the AL Division Series. New York sent left-hander Justus Sheffield to the Mariners along with right-hander Erik Swanson and outfielder Dom Thompson-Williams. Paxton turned 30 on Nov. 6 and went 11-6 with a 3.76 ERA in 28 starts last season, including a no-hitter at Toronto on May 8. Paxton, a proud Canadian, is also known for keeping his composure as a bald eagle mistakenly landed on his shoulder prior to a start at Minnesota in April. He joins a rotation projected to include right-handers Luis Severino and Masahiro Tanaka and left-hander CC Sabathia. Paxton made $4.9 million last season and is eligible for salary arbitration. He can become a free agent after the 2020 season. Sheffield is rated among the top minor league prospects, made his big league debut in September and pitched in three games for the Yankees. He had a 2.48 ERA in 25 minor league appearances at Double-A and Triple-A this year, striking out 123 in 116 innings and allowing just four home runs. Sheffield won't turn 23 until May and could become a future anchor to Seattle's rotation. Swanson, 25, started the year at Double-A Trenton but spent most of 2018 at the Triple-A level with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he made 13 starts and had a 3.86 ERA. Swanson had 78 strikeouts and 14 walks in 72 1/3 innings in Triple-A. He pitched 121 2/3 total innings last season overall and was rated among the top 25 prospects in the Yankees organization by MLB.com. Thompson-Williams, 23, has never played above Class A and will turn 24 next April. He had 22 home runs, 20 stolen bases and a .299 average across two Class A affiliates this year. ___ AP Sports Writer Tim Booth in Seattle contributed to this report......»»

Firsts for Sane, Suele as Germany beats Russia in friendly

LEIPZIG, Germany (AP) — Leroy Sane and Niklas Suele struck their first international goals to guide Germany to a 3-0 win over Russia in a friendly on Thursday. The 2014 world champions, who surrendered their crown following a first-round exit in Russia in June, went 1-0 up thanks to an eighth-minute goal from Sane. Suele added a second goal 17 minutes later before Serge Gnabry, who had set up Sane for the opener, made sure of victory five minutes before halftime. The visitors improved after the break, with Aleksei Ionov going close as the intensity of the game dropped. The 32-year-old Brazilian-born Ariclenes da Silva Ferreira, known as Ari, made his Russia debut but failed to make much of an impact and was substituted early in the second half. Germany, which lost 2-1 in France and 3-0 in the Netherlands in its previous UEFA Nations League games, continues its campaign against the Dutch in Gelsenkirchen on Monday. The Germans are bottom of League A, Group 1 with one point from three games and will be relegated on Friday if the Dutch beat world champion France in Rotterdam......»»
