Possible oil spill looms in Batangas
Another oil spill is being monitored in the province of Batangas following the sinking of a fishing vessel Sunday morning which was carrying thousands of liters of diesel, according to Protect Verde Island Passage on Monday. The group disclosed that the fishing vessel, which was carrying 70,000 liters of diesel when it sank off the coast of Calatagan sparked fears of another oil spill as the area — part of the internationally acclaimed biodiversity hotspot Verde Island Passage — still struggles to recover from the MT Princess Empress tragedy that spilled 900,000 liters of industrial oil exactly six months prior. Also on Monday, the Philippine Coast Guard confirmed the report, saying that a total of 13 crew members were successfully rescued when fishing vessel Anita DJ II submerged around seven nautical miles from the shoreline of Cape Santiago, Barangay Bagong Silang, Calatagan. “At 6:45 a.m., Coast Guard Station Batangas received a phone contact from Agutaya police stating authorities of an alleged submerged vessel within Batangas’ jurisdiction. The Coast Guard received information from the mother of one of the crew that the distressed boat was submerged in the waters off the coast of Batangas,” the PCG report said. The PCG added that the distressed boat with a gross tonnage of 448.83 tons and net tonnage of 273.59 tons is owned by IRMA Fishing, departed Navotas Port Sunday dawn bound for Palawan fishing grounds. “Coast Guard Station Batangas coordinated with IRMA Fishing Company and directed them to provide a tugboat for the towing operation of the subject vessel. Likewise, they also coordinated with Harbor Star Towage Company and requested assistance in which the company’s Motor Tug Great Lark proceeded to the said location to carry out possible towing operations,” according to the PCG. The search and rescue team of Coast Guard Sub Station Calatagan sighted the distressed vessel and immediately approached the Fishing Banca Rainbow Warrior to rescue the 13 crew aboard and bring them to the nearest shoreline. The search and rescue team along with 13 rescued crew members of the vessel safely arrived at CGSS Calatagan. The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office also provided medical assistance to the rescued crew. “BRP Bagacay (MRRV-4410), a 44-meter multi-role response vessel operated by PCG, was dispatched to respond to the distressed vessel. MRRV 4410 reported the stricken boat to be half-submerged about 1:35 p.m. and confirmed its sinking at 3:17 p.m. on Sunday in waters 2.16 nautical miles South-southwest of Cape Santiago in Calatagan Island. The reason behind the mishap is currently being investigated,” the PCG said. Meantime, the PCG said it also coordinated with the MDRRMO to prepare available oil spill response and local tourism officials to inform resort owners and local barangays to be vigilant for possible oil spills. Angeles residents evacuated amid ‘Egay’
Angeles City, Pampanga — The local government here on Tuesday ordered the preemptive evacuation of residents living near riverbanks and creeks as part of its preparations for the coming super typhoon “Egay.” Angeles City Mayor Carmelo Lazatin Jr. said that he instructed Angeles City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer chief Rudy Simeon and City Engineer Donato Dizon to lead the evacuation, stressing that it is better to be alert and prepared before any disaster happens. He also assured that in the event of an emergency, the city government — through the ACDRRMO and CEO — is ready to respond to any rescue, evacuation and clearing operations. According to Simeon, the ACDRRMO is closely monitoring the major river channels in Angeles City, the Abacan River and Sapang Balen Creek and as of the moment, no incident of overflowing and soil erosion on both sides of the riverbanks and creeks were reported. Waterflows in Sapang Balen creek and Abacan River, on the other hand, are still under normal condition. The ACDRRMO is in continuous coordination with the 33 Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils for any alerts in case of typhoon “Egay’s” onslaught. Meanwhile, Dizon said that his roving teams are ready to clear roads from any obstructions. Lazatin, meantime, wants to ensure everyone’s safety in the event of emergencies like strong winds toppling down certain obstructions. In other developments, at least 480 passengers are stranded in two ports of Western Visayas following the cancellation of trips due to super typhoon “Egay” and the southwest monsoon on Tuesday. Data from the Coast Guard District Western Visayas showed that 165 passengers bound for Tabuelan, Cebu were stranded at the Barcelona port in Escalante, Negros Occidental while 315 others bound for Mindoro, Romblon, and Batangas were stuck at the Caticlan Jetty port in Malay, Aklan. Canceled trips included those from ports of Estancia, Iloilo going to Sicogon/Gigantes Island; Concepcion to Tambaliza, Igbon, and Malangabang; Bancal in Carles to Gigantes Island, all in Iloilo and Ajuy port going to EB Magalona in Negros Occidental. Trips from the port of San Carlos City in Negros Occidental going to Toledo, Cebu were also suspended. The Montenegro Shipping Lines canceled its trips from Lapuz wharf going to Guimaras. Trips from Iloilo City to Bacolod City via Ocean Jet and Weesam Express were canceled except for the latter’s 11:30 a.m. schedule. Sagip Kapamilya treks to provinces to help typhoon ‘Rolly’ survivors
ABS-CBN Foundation’s Sagip Kapamilya has gone to different provinces hit by Typhoon Rolly to bring comfort to families through food and relief packs. Through the support of donors and partners, 1,000 food packs have been brought to Brgy. Puro and Penaranda in Legazpi, Albay while 533 families received relief bags in Brgy. Gapo in Camalig, Albay. Sagip Kapamilya has also visited Brgy. Travesia in Guinobatan, Albay to distribute food packs to 265 families that evacuated at Travesia Elementary School and to turnover medicine to the Barangay Health Center. One of the survivors in Guinobatan, farmer Solomon Octavo, shared the difficulties they are facing as floodwater and lahar from the Mayon Volcano buried his entire house and farmland. “Magmula noong lumaki ako, ngayon lang ako nakaranas ng ganitong nangyari. Ang sinalba lang namin, buhay namin,” he shared in an interview with ABS-CBN News. (Growing up, I have never experienced anything like this. The only thing we could save was our own lives.) Aside from areas in the Bicol Region including Catanduanes, Sagip Kapamilya has also conducted relief operations in Southern Tagalog, which also suffered tremendous damage due to the typhoon. In Aurora, 494 families were given food packs while 1,990 individuals received hot meals to nourish them while they remained at Dingalan National High School and Mega evacuation centers. Even before the landfall of Rolly, Sagip Kapamilya was already there to provide food to evacuees. It is also bound for Batangas and Oriental Mindoro. As families are expected to stay longer in evacuation centers while they rebuild their homes, more donations are needed to support them. Jen Santos, ABS-CBN Foundation’s director for operations told ABS-CBN News that so far, many have shown interest to help and donate. “Marami talaga ang nagpapaabot (ng donasyon)… marami talaga ang nagpapaabot [at nagsabi] na ‘kami rin, gusto naming tumulong, paano kami makakatulong?” (So many have donated and many said they want to help, asking us how they could provide assistance.) Meanwhile, she said they are also missing the presence of ABS-CBN Regional, which had its last day last August 31 due to the nonrenewal of ABS-CBN’s franchise to broadcast. Santos said that it is usually the staff from the regional stations that are first to respond to affected areas to distribute relief goods......»»
