Deceased Maine shooter had mental health problems: police
Police in Maine said Saturday that the man who gunned down 18 people at a bar and a bowling alley and later committed suicide, suffered serious mental health issues, but was able to buy weapons legally because he had never been forcibly committed to treatment. The body of Robert Card, a 40-year-old army reservist, was discovered Friday night inside a tractor-trailer near a recycling center where he used to work, said Maine public safety commissioner Mike Sauschuck. Card had shot himself. Investigators are still struggling to determine Card's motive for carrying out Wednesday's massacre in the town of Lewiston. However, Sauschuck said that Card had reportedly been hearing voices and suffering from paranoia. "Clearly there's a mental health component to this," Sauschuck told reporters. Investigators found a "paper-style" note that Card had left to a loved one which contained a password to his phone and bank account information, Sauschuck said, adding that the note had the tone of a suicide letter. Card was found in possession of three weapons, one of them a long gun, all purchased legally because he had never been forcibly committed to a mental institution. Despite the apparently clear mental health issues and a reportedly recent psychiatric evaluation undergone by Card, "a background check is not going to ping that this individual was prohibited," Sauschuck added. The sigh of relief The discovery of Card's body ended a massive two-day manhunt, which had this quiet city of 38,000 people on lockdown, with businesses and schools closed and residents terrified. Sauschuck acknowledged the help Card's family had provided to the investigation, saying his relatives were among the first people to call the police and identify the suspect. "This family has been incredibly cooperative with us," he said. Lewiston finally breathed a sigh of relief with businesses beginning to open and people appearing on the streets Saturday. Several posters reading "Lewiston strong" were seen in the city. Shukri Abasheikh, 60, was finally able to reopen her halal grocery store after the lockdown. "This morning I'm so happy because the last two days, we were worried a lot and we were scared," Abasheikh told AFP. "My customers were calling me saying we don't have milk, we don't have anything, can you open and I said, 'I'm scared.'" Upon learning that Card was dead, Sheri Withers, 44, owner of a Lewiston art gallery, said she felt "a balance of relief and remembering how to breathe, but also just being sad because, you know, it was a human life." For now, residents are "just trying to rebuild the pieces, and getting on from here is gonna be the next step for our community," she added. A local resident named Danica, who was buying coffee at a drive-through, said she was happy Card was dead, but at the same time wished he had first been brought to justice. "I think he took the coward's way out of doing it by suicide," Danica, who declined to give her last name, told AFP. "I think he should be held accountable for his crimes." In a statement issued shortly after Card's body was discovered Friday night, President Joe Biden vowed to renew efforts to curb gun violence in the United States. "Americans should not have to live like this," Biden said. "I will continue to do everything in my power to end this gun violence epidemic." Biden said the shooting brought "a tragic two days -- not just for Lewiston, Maine, but for our entire country." Authorities on Friday identified the victims, ranging from a husband and wife in their 70s to a 14-year-old boy killed alongside his father. This was one of the deadliest shootings in the United States since 2017, when a gunman opened fire on a crowded music festival in Las Vegas, killing 60 people Mass shootings are alarmingly common in the United States, a country where there are more guns than people and where attempts to clamp down on their spread are always met with stiff resistance. The United States has recorded over 500 mass shootings this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a non-governmental organization that defines a mass shooting as four or more people wounded or killed. Efforts to tighten gun controls have for years run up against opposition from Republicans, staunch defenders of the constitutional right to bear arms. The political paralysis endures despite widespread outrage over recurring shootings. The post Deceased Maine shooter had mental health problems: police appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Essential Bangkok experience
Take the Airport Rail Link and SkyTrain. If you don’t have too many pieces of luggage, says our tour guide Nattapong Jongboonsab, the Airport Rail Link is the quickest — and cheapest — way to get into the city. The SkyTrain is also the best way to get around Bangkok and beat the traffic jam. The trains run regularly and are often quite busy. Check out Siam Premium Outlet. The perfect starting point for most tourists — with shopping as the first order of the day — just 20 minutes away from the Suvarnabhumi Airport. It is where the world’s biggest fashion stores and high-end brands are located. Think Balenciaga, Chanel, Burberry, Versace, Ferragamo, Bally, Jimmy Choo, Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs etc., alongside a host of casual, sporting and accessories brands, including Adidas, Nike, Fred Perry, Onitsuka Tiger, Samsonite, Swarovski. The outdoor complex houses a number of air-conditioned restaurants — like the popular S&P Thai Restaurant (try their Chicken Green Curry and Seabass Yellow Curry on Rice — the best!) — and food stalls selling popular Thai street food dishes. Other high-end stores in the city you must visit: Central Village, Iconsiam and Siam Paragon. Explore Iconsiam — The most impressive shopping center in Bangkok with more than 7,000 shops, 100 restaurants and even a floating market. The ground floor is a bustling indoor night market filled with food stalls dishing out classic Bangkok street snacks, including oyster and crab omelet, spicy and pungent curries, grilled squids, prawns and eels, pad thai, rice bowls, noodles, deep-fried chicken and pork, pomelo salad and their ever-popular mango sticky rice — all at affordable price. Our guide says it is best visited on a rowdy weekend, with endless orders of beers to chase away the fiery flavors. Walk around Siam Square. It’s a unique hipster block with something for everyone, from boutique stores to cool cafes and patisseries. The area is so popular among the young generation who enjoys hanging out with friends over cups of iced coffee or milk tea, specially from the most-talked about and most Instagrammable dog-friendly restaurant, the Dosan Dalmatian by Mammia. It offers western and Korean dishes with indoor and outdoor sitting. It’s best to order a cappuccino or latte because there’s an adorable puppy face cream on top. Sooo cute. Shop till you drop at Jodd Fairs. Another open-air night market selling local and imported items from branded clothing to bric-a-brac. Pick up a plaid shirt, slap on some oversized sunglasses and pair it all with sandals and socks while you’re at it. After your retail therapy, stop by for a cold beer or mocktails and a snack of churros at one of its outdoor food stalls. Pamper yourself at Let’s Relax. After a long day of shopping and sightseeing, one of the best things you can do for your body and mental well-being is hit the spa. Some of the world’s best spas are in Bangkok, and Let’s Relax is one of them. It offers authentic, traditional Thai body massage. However, we just opted for the one-and-a-half-hour foot massage. Not bad at all. The post Essential Bangkok experience appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Trans fat ban iffy sans DTI-FDA deal
Even if the Food and Drug Administration and Department of Health’s order is already in effect for manufacturers to reformulate their products to remove trans fatty acids or trans fat from their products, the DTI said it cannot mandate the pull-out of existing products in supermarkets nor supervise how traders are heeding the order. Issued in 2021, DoH Administrative Order 2021-0039 and FDA Circular 2021-028 and 2021-028A gave food manufacturers until 18 June 2023 to heed the orders to tweak the formulation of their food products and totally eliminate trans fat from their products. Speaking for DTI Assistant Secretary for Legal Agaton Uvero, Trade Undersecretary for Communications Kim Bernardo-Lokin said the full force of the order and circular should be imposed by the FDA and the DoH which have the power to do so. “The issue is under the jurisdiction of the FDA and the DoH. DTI cannot enforce the DoH and FDA regulations on its own in the absence of an agreement between the two agencies,” Lokin said. Based on the DoH and FDA order, food manufacturers were given two years to reformulate and remove TFAs from their products or face sanctions. Even if products with high trans fat are usually found in supermarkets and grocery stores that are under the jurisdiction of the DTI, Lokin said a memorandum of agreement is needed for them to check if the trans fat content of manufacturers’ products is reformulated, or pull them out from supermarkets and groceries. Products that are traditionally high in iTFA or industrial trans fat, include margarine, coffee creamer, instant noodles, and baked goods such as donuts and cookies, among others. “We cannot easily pull them out since many products in supermarkets have trans fat in them,” Lokin said. iTFA is created by adding hydrogen to oil and, based on medical studies, it has no known health benefits and is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease and stroke worldwide, estimated to cause around 540,000 deaths every year. 564 food products Last week, Michael Pelagio, a science research specialist at the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute chemical laboratory revealed that based on a chemical examination of 564 food products tested, 17 percent had high trans fatty acid or TFA content that was risky for consumers. He said oils and fats such as sesame oil and mayonnaise, unsalted butter, all-purpose cream, and bread and pastry products such as cookies and doughnuts have a TFA content of more than two grams per 100-gram serving. “Based on our results, 17 percent of sample foods contain more than two grams per 100-gram fat. 564 samples were analyzed for TFA content. Average results in the food category showed that fats and oils had the highest TFA content, followed by milk and dairy products,” Pelagio revealed during the DoST-FNRI seminar at the Dusit Thani Manila on Friday. On the other hand, Atty. Mikhail Millan of ImagineLaw urged the public to join in the effort to enforce the DoH and FDA orders and report any manufacturers violating the orders. According to the FDA, if a company violates a provision of the circular, it will be basis for disapproval of the company’s application for a Certificate of Product Registration, or if already issued a CPR, it will be a ground for suspension or revocation of the CPR, Millan said. Late enforcement The Philippines is already late in enforcing the ban given that the World Health Organization said new laws should protect more than 3.2 billion people from TFAs by the end of 2020. Many countries, including Canada, the European Union and South America have implemented bans or restrictions on trans fats in food products. Trans fat, according to medical experts, is the worst type of fat to eat. Unlike other dietary fats, trans fats, which are artificial, raise “bad” cholesterol and lower “good” cholesterol. Cardiologists will always tell you that a diet laden with trans fats increases the risk of heart disease, the top killer of Filipinos, aside from hunger. Kathryna Yu-Pimentel’s success recipes: ‘Good partners, location, products, service’
There are no shortcuts to success, says entrepreneur Kathryna Yu-Pimentel. At the start of her career, the self-taught culinary artist was pushed into the extremes while running her now-defunct food services. Humbled by the lessons she’s learned from her initial ventures, she has moved on to team up with other partners for her current businesses and has been reaping in it with the Singaporean casual dining restaurant chain Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice and Alpina Lounge and Wellness. Entrepreneurship came naturally to Kathryna who started earning money in her elementary and high school days by making and selling polvoron and cookies. In college, she supplied 500 packed cookies a week to a classmate who owned a coffee cart in the school. After graduation, they became suppliers to lobby coffee shops and school canteens. Likewise, she ran her own catering business and an Italian restaurant. Shifted careers Kathryna shifted careers when she worked at the law firm of her future husband Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III and at the Senate office upon his election. Six years ago, she came upon Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice restaurant while on a trip to Singapore. Its long name distinguishes itself from Tiong Bahru, Singapore’s oldest neighborhood and tourist destination. Located in the hawkers’ area, the restaurant attracted long queues of office workers. The come-on was the bite-size pieces of succulent Hainanese chicken on fragrant turmeric rice with ginger, chili and hoisin sauces. “It was a hearty meal yet you didn’t feel the guilt because the chicken was not fried,” says Kathryna. Chicken rice Whenever she visited in Singapore, she kept returning to Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice. In 2019, Kathryna and several partners, including the Singaporean owner established the local corporation, Tiong Bahru Philippines, which aims owns and manage its restaurants here. The restaurant opened at MET Live Mall in Pasay City followed by a branch at Easton Place in Makati. Lockdowns notwithstanding, the businesses flourished with its healthy offerings and efficient delivery. The famous chicken rice dish clicked because it offered top quality and value for money for less than P300 for a solo serving. Some customers kept ordering daily. Post-pandemic, Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice now has seven outlets in the metropolis. The flagship restaurant was recently inaugurated at the Eastwood Mall. The eighth branch is slated to open at the Greenhills Shopping Center later in the year. Aside from the poached and roasted chickens, with their tender and juicy meat, the restaurant chain is also known for its tofu appetizer with sweet chili sauce, the sausage-like kikiam Singapore, and the beef and fish head curries. Cooked on-site A major advantage is that the food is cooked on-site to guarantee freshness. Before each restaurant opening, the Singaporean principal, Andrew Koh, trains the kitchen staff to ensure authenticity in taste. Customers seek fresh taste and healthy meals at pocket-friendly prices. Kathryna attributes Tiong Bahru’s success to her harmonious relationship with her partners. The investors, who come from diverse fields, offer their expertise. Kathryna and two other partners are foodies who conduct taste tests and visit the different branches to check consistency in quality. She adds that the location in malls and high-traffic areas help bring in customers. Meanwhile, Alpina Lounge and Wellness, a nail and brow salon cum spa, at Uptown Parade in Taguig City has been thriving. Kathryna is joined by her sister, Stephanie Yu Chua and Russian brow expert Maria Zhukova, as managing partners in this business. Aside from offering minimally invasive services, specialized blood tests and massages, Alpina doubles as a party place at night. Business is flourishing because it uses top quality machines and products executed by professionals who follow international standards in nail art, semi-permanent makeup and aesthetic procedures. Kathryna says her earlier ventures taught her to be resilient. Maturity, location and timing are important to success. Learning from her lessons, she follows the classic recipe for success, that is: “Good partners, good location, good products and good service.” The post Kathryna Yu-Pimentel’s success recipes: ‘Good partners, location, products, service’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Phosphorus and your kidneys
The mineral phosphorus is an essential mineral in the body. It makes up part of our bones and teeth and even our DNA. It also helps the body function properly and helps how the body uses energy. It is naturally present in many foods, and a phosphorus deficiency is rare if you have a balanced diet with no need to take supplements. The recommended nutrient intake of phosphorus for adult Filipinos is 700 mg per day, 1,250 mg for adolescents and teenagers, when bones are growing the most. The average daily consumption of adults is about 1,200-1,500 mg/day and the upper tolerable level is about 3,000-4,000 mg/day, but high phosphorus intakes rarely produce adverse effects in healthy people. The kidneys, intestines and bones regulate phosphorus levels in the body. When the kidneys stop working properly, as in chronic kidney failure, the body cannot get rid of phosphate properly and phosphorus levels go up. Too much phosphorus in the body makes calcium come out of the bones, making them weak and prone to fracture. This misplacement of calcium can also affect blood vessels, cause blood pressure and heart disease. It is thus very important for patients with kidney disease to watch their phosphorus intake, limiting it to about 800 mg per day. Many different types of foods contain phosphorus — meats and poultry, organ meats (liver), fish, dairy products, eggs, nuts, beans, vegetables and grains, including bread and rice. On average, an ounce of meat has about 65 mg of phosphorus. A cup of milk or yogurt about 220 mg. A cup of white rice has about 70 mg of phosphorus. A cup of long-grain brown rice has about 200 mg. While whole grain bread can be a healthy source of fiber, one slice has about 40 mg of phosphorus compared to white bread with 25 mg. [caption id="attachment_139743" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of unsplash/morgane perraud | EGGS are high in phosphorus.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_139742" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of unsplash/louise lyshoj | ASIDE from carbohydrates, breads are rich in phosphorus as well.[/caption] Patients with CKD are usually advised to limit their phosphorous by limiting their protein intake and to replace animal proteins with plant-based protein sources. Care should also be taken when eating processed and frozen foods which can contain phosphate additives which are used to preserve or stabilize these foods. About 70 percent of phosphorus from natural food sources is absorbed by the body, and 100 percent of phosphorus is absorbed from processed foods. One way to limit phosphorus intake is to check the ingredient list of processed foods for the letters “phos” for additives, such as phosphoric acid, disodium phosphate, sodium pyrophosphate and sodium polyphosphate. These additives can add almost 70 mg of phosphorus to your diet. Also look out for phosphorus in drinks like colas (they contain phosphoric acid), flavored waters, iced teas, bottled juices and bottled coffee. [caption id="attachment_139740" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of unsplash/ alireza nikzad | PHOSPHORUS is naturally found in meat.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_139741" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of unsplash/ faris mohammed | RICE contains a lot of phosphorus.[/caption] It can be difficult for patients with CKD to manage their diets and many ask, “What can I eat?” Here are some examples and ways to prepare them that are lower in phosphorus: Chicken thigh, skinless, three ounces = 190 mg Old-fashioned rolled oats (instead of instant), ½ cup cooked = 120 mg Shrimp, three ounces = 120 mg Almond milk, ½ cup = 50 mg Potato, without skin, medium size (two inches diameter), double-boiled = 50 mg Spaghetti noodles, ½ cup = 42 mg Apple, medium size = 10 mg Egg white, from one egg = 5 mg (1 whole egg with the yolk has 95 mg of phosphorus) Patients with CKD should opt for whole foods rather than processed or fast food. Check labels for ingredients for hidden sources of phosphorous. Many online sources list the amount of phosphorous per serving for many common foods. Portion control can also help limit the amount of phosphorus per meal. And remember that eating too much of a low-phosphorus food makes it a high phosphorus food.
