ABL: Paul Zamar hit a dagger right through the hearts of Filipinos

BANGKOK, THAILAND – As if the 2017-2018 Asean Basketball League Finals needed even more of it, Ray Parks Jr. and Paul Zamar have even more evidence to prove just how equally matched Alab Pilipinas and Mono Vampire are. In Game 4 on Saturday, Zamar swished a floater over the outstretched arms of Parks Jr. to put out the fire in Alab’s comeback and push Mono to an 88-83 win. This, coming from two days earlier when Parks Jr. hit a fadeaway jumper over the outstretched arms of Zamar to keep Mono at bay and claim for Alab a 99-93 win. Filipino head coach Jimmy Alapag could only marvel at the parallelism of those shots. “Down the stretch, Zamar hit a big one-legged shot similar to Ray’s the other night. That was a big shot,” he told reporters. For Zamar, his clutch shot wasn’t answer to Parks Jr.’s clutch shot. “I didn’t look at it as redemption. I looked at is as survival because our season was on the line,” he said. Indeed, the Thais needed to win Game 4 to level the best-of-five championship series at 2-2 and schedule a winner-take-all Game 5. Good thing then that their Filipino import came through with, in his own eyes, one of the biggest shots of his career. “Coach was stressing before the game that it’s not gonna be easy so we have to find other ways to win. We pushed especially in the end when we needed it the most the most,” he said. In the end, staying true to how he has long known to be, Zamar remained modest and deflected all credit to his teammates. “That clutch shot, it’s team effort that gave me the opportunity. We were trading blows with them (Alab) and I made it,” he said. He then continued, “I’m thankful and relieved I made it.” Zamar and Mono Vampire hope for the same result when they travel to the Philippines for Game 5 on Wednesday at the Sta. Rosa Multi-Purpose Complex in Laguna. That final showdown of the season tips off at 8:00 PM and will be on S+A, S+A HD, and livestream. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Alab Pilipinas just beat Mono Vampire at its own run-n-gun game

STA. ROSA, LAGUNA – Thailand’s Mono Vampire was four seconds away from stealing Game 1 of the 2017-2018 Asean Basketball League Finals from home team Alab Pilipinas. Justin Brownlee, and Renaldo Balkman, were having none of it, however. Brownlee’s heads-up play coupled with Balkman’s hustle play extended the Finals showdown and in overtime, there was just no stopping the two of them. “We gotta win this game. We gotta win it. That was all that was in my head then,” the latter told reporters post-game. The Filipinos’ reinforcements combined for 18 points in the extra period, outscoring by nine points all of Vampire. “I just knew that if we’re going into overtime, it’s gonna be over,” Balkman said. The final score read, 143-130, in favor of the home team who now has a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five championship round. The incredible come-from behind win is nothing but a morale-booster as they prepare for Game 2 on Wednesday still at the same venue and then Game 3 on Saturday in Bangkok, Thailand. “We were down four with 19 seconds and everybody was walking out like we’ve lost the game. We gotta stick together during those times,” the Puerto Rican import said. He then continued, “But it’s all good cause we did and we came up with the win.” The Philippines’ 143 points were the most points scored in a single game in the eight-year history of the ABL. And with that, the defensive-minded team proved that, when needed, they can keep up with Vampire’s high-octane offense. “Credit to Mono, they came out and played extremely well. Credit to coach Douglas [Marty] for coming out with a great game plan,” head coach Jimmy Alapag shared. He then continued, “But we have a very resilient group and guys who continue to fight. That’s a staple for us this season.” Still, Alab hopes that they will be the ones setting the pace on Wednesday. “As a team, we just have to be much better defensively. Giving up 143 points won’t win us this series and I am confident we will be much better,” Alapag said. Balkman could only agree. “We gotta come back (in Game 2) and do a better job than we did tonight,” he remarked Game 2 and the rest of the 2017-2018 ABL Finals will still be LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on S+A, S+A HD, and livestream. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Muntinlupa books a semis ticket; Paranaque forces rubbermatch

Muntinlupa turned to Allan Mangahas in the last 41 seconds to bury the dagger straight into the heart of Navotas as the Cagers clinched a Final Four spot with a 72-69 win in Game 2 of their best-of-three 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Anta Rajah Cup quarterfinals Tuesday night. Protecting a slim lead with under a minute remaining, Mangahas scored on a layup to give the host team a five-point margin. Jamil Gabawan answered with a basket in the next play to cut Navotas’ deficit to 72-69 with only 37 seconds remaining. Cagers forward Chito Jaime missed his three-point attempt but Chester Saldua missed on a potential equalizer from beyond the arc for the Clutch as time expired to the delight of the home crowd inside the Muntinlupa Sports Complex. Mangahas finished with 23 points, six rebounds and six assists while Dave Morale and Chito Jaime scored 14 and 12 markers, respectively, for the home team, which will face in the best-of-three semis the survivor between Bulacan and Paranaque in the other quarters pairing. JP Calvo put Navotas on top, 67-64, on a triple with 3:50 left. Moralde scored on a layup before Felix Apreku gave Muntinlupa the lead on two charities followed by a basket by Mangahas as the Cagers took a 72-67 advantage with 1:16 remaining. JP Calvo had 20 points while Jamil Gabawan posted 20 markers and 17 rebounds for Muntinlupa. Meanwhile, Paranaque forced a rubbermatch for a spot in the semis after blowing out Bulacan, 81-54. The Patriots limited the Kuyas to only 27 points in the first half to dictate the tempo of match before cruising to a rout that evened the series, 1-1. Juneric Baloria led the way for Paranaque with 26 points while Harold Arboleda had 12 markers and 13 boards. Jorey Napoles and Stephen Siruma fired 12 points each for Bulacan. The rubbermatch is set on April 3 at KB Gym in Malolos, Bulacan.
