Police: No truth to bomb threat at PI’s prayer rally
The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) has debunked a text message claiming a bomb threat at the People's Initiative (PI) “Unity for One Nation, One Prayer” rally in San Pedro Square. The message warned of possible explosions at Rizal Park, one of the rally venues. Despite the lack of credible threats, the police urged vigilance and cooperation from the public for safety. Approximately 300 police personnel were deployed to secure various rally points, with additional support from volunteers and security clusters. Task Force Davao also activated a high alert status as part of the city's security measures. Captain John Louie Dema-ala confirmed that the circulating threat was unfounded and aimed at intimidating rallyists. Despite this, nearly 17,000 Dabawenyos joined the rally to oppose the proposed Charter change (Cha-cha) movement. The police and security forces remain vigilant and are conducting ongoing investigations into the social media threat......»»

‘Terrible nightmare’: OFWs recount Hamas attack on Israel
Two Overseas Filipino Workers shared on Monday their traumatizing experience during the attack of Hamas militants on Israel. Teresita Malapo, 35, a resident of Baao, Camarines Sur and a caregiver for eight years, said they were about to go to church in Jerusalem when they heard a siren. “On Saturday morning, we were about to go to church in Jerusalem because most of the time, we go to church every day off. Suddenly, we heard a siren. After a while, there was news that rockets were being launched from Palestine. We were all shocked." She added that a simple bang of the door made her feel nervous because of the bombings. “That feeling that you always hear something, and your feeling of nervousness is increasing. When a door closes, you think something has exploded. In Israel, there is an explosion anytime of the day. It explodes even without a siren. When there’s a bombing, our house or bomb shelters vibrates,” she lamented. Meanwhile, Gerald Caniban, 35, a resident of Iloilo City and a caregiver for five years, said he was asleep when he was awakened by a phone alert and heard a siren. “It was an overwhelming experience because of what happened on 7 October. I was staying in Tel Aviv that morning, I was with my girlfriend when we heard the alert on my phone. It was Saturday, our day off. Then after a few minutes, we heard a siren all over Tel Aviv,” Caniban said. “It was a terrible nightmare. Israel didn’t expect Hamas to attack. In my personal experience, I don’t have peace of mind. Even if you’re asleep, it’s like you’re awake because you might hear a siren anytime. Then I got sick for a week thinking that there was something that would come again. So even when I’m lying down, I still watch the news. That’s what makes me nervous that something worst might be coming,” he said. A total of 25 OFWs, including a four-month-old infant, arrived on Monday afternoon at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3, as the third batch of repatriates via Etihad Airways EY424. The repatriates were received by Department of Migrant Workers Officer-in-Charge Hans Leo Cacdac, DMW Undersecretary Maria Anthonette Velasco-Allones, TESDA Director Cariza Dacuma, Congressman Ron Salo, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Administrator Mary Melanie Quino, Department of Social Welfare and Development Director Mirmamel Laxa and Department of Health Director Bernadette Velasco. According to Allones, two of the repatriates are in need of psychosocial assistance. Cacdac said a total of 16 caregivers and nine hotel workers were in the third batch of repatriated OFWs, which he said were predominantly women. 59 OFWs seek Lebanon exit
At least 59 Filipinos in Lebanon have expressed a desire to be repatriated amid the escalating tension between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah, the Philippine Embassy in Lebanon said Monday. Hezbollah is another Islamist militant group that controls the southern part of Lebanon. It has launched rockets into the northern part of Israel, which has fired back. “On Sunday morning, when we held our meeting with Filipino community leaders, we received 59 applications,” Philippine Ambassador to Lebanon Raymond Balatbat said in a television interview. This developed as the Philippine government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs, placed Lebanon under Alert Level 3, or voluntary repatriation. According to the DFA, there are an estimated 17,500 Filipinos in Lebanon, 67 of them residing on its southern border. Balatbat said only three of the 67 Filipinos on the southern border have asked to be repatriated. Since the surprise attack by the Palestinian Sunni-Islamic extremist group Hamas on Israel on 7 October, which left 1,400 Israelis dead, scores of foreigners have also been killed, including four Filipinos. Meanwhile, a total of 24 overseas Filipino workers, comprising the third batch of repatriates from Israel, arrived Monday afternoon at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3. The repatriates — 21 women and three men — came from Israel via Abu Dhabi on board Etihad Airways flight EY424. Migrant Workers Officer-in-Charge Hans Leo Cacdac assured all the repatriates of support from the government to ease their displacement and facilitate their reintegration. Medical journals warn of ‘growing’ nuclear weapon threat
More than 100 medical journals across the world issued a rare joint call on Thursday for urgent action to eliminate nuclear weapons, warning that the threat of nuclear catastrophe was "great and growing". The call comes with Russia repeatedly issuing thinly veiled warnings that Moscow could use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, as well as repeated North Korean missile tests and stalling efforts towards non-proliferation. An editorial published in numerous medical journals called on health professionals worldwide to alert citizens and leaders about "the major danger to public health" posed by nuclear weapons. "The danger is great and growing," said the editorial, co-authored by the editors of 11 leading medical journals including the BMJ, Lancet, JAMA and the New England Journal of Medicine. "The nuclear armed states must eliminate their nuclear arsenals before they eliminate us." Chris Zielinski of the World Association of Medical Editors said it was an "extraordinary development" that the competing journals, which normally fight for exclusive content, had joined forces. "That all of these leading journals have agreed to publish the same editorial underlines the extreme urgency of the current nuclear crisis," he said in a statement. The editorial warned that any use of nuclear weapons "would be catastrophic for humanity". "Even a 'limited' nuclear war involving only 250 of the 13,000 nuclear weapons in the world could kill 120 million people outright and cause global climate disruption leading to a nuclear famine, putting two billion people at risk," it warned, citing previous research. 'Dangerous moment' Ira Helfand, ex-president of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War and a co-author the editorial, told AFP: "We are facing an extraordinarily dangerous moment where the possibility of nuclear war is real." He pointed to a comment made just this week by former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev threatening the use of nuclear weapons if Ukraine's counter-offensive captured Russian territory. "We don't know if the threats are real or if they're just put forward to scare people, but I think we have to take them very seriously," Helfand said. He also pointed to North Korea, which Japan said last week posed a more serious threat to national security "than ever before". The editorial was released on the same week that a preparatory committee meeting is being held in Vienna for a review of the UN's Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which entered force in 1970. A review of the keystone treaty held last year failed to adopt a joint declaration, with the United States denouncing "cynical obstructionism" from Russia. The editorial lamented that "progress has been disappointingly slow". Sunday also marks the 68th anniversary of the first nuclear weapon being used on civilians -- the US detonated an atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Attempted NGCP tower bombing foiled
ZAMBOANGA CITY — The military on Tuesday reported that its troops and police personnel discovered four powerful improvised explosive devices at the foot of National Grid Corporation of the Philippines Tower 39 in Pikit town, Cotabato province. Joint Task Force Central commander Major General Alex S. Rillera on Tuesday narrated that soldiers recovered and disarmed three IEDs found at the foot of the NGCP tower in Sitio Punol, Batulawan in Pikit on Monday. The soldiers visited the area after civilians reported to them that an IED exploded in the vicinity of the NGCP Tower 39 on Monday morning and during their search, they recovered three IED anti-personnel mines. Rillera added that aside from the three APMs found, another Unexploded Ordnance made from an 81mm high explosive was also found by the residents of Barangay Kadigasan, Midsayap town in Cotabato on Monday. While Rillera did not disclose any armed group of operating in the area which is part of the Special Geographic Area of Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, he ordered the implementation of a high alert level status to ensure the safety of the people in the area. “That’s why your military continues to guard the vital installations of the government and the private sector that stimulate the economy while we don’t put aside the safety of our people,” Rillera said. “So, we in the JTF-C in collaboration with other security forces will not hesitate to hunt down the bad elements responsible for sowing violence and destroying the peace and continued economic development of Central and South Central Mindanao,” he added. Meantime, Lt. Col. John Miridel Calinga, municipal police station chief, said that the EIDs bore the signature style of the Daesh-inspired Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters operating in the area. “It was not meant to harm civilians but only the NGCP tower,” Calinga said, adding that the site is far from residential areas. The discovery of IEDs here came a day after residents of Barangay Kadigasan, Midsayap town, North Cotabato, also found a homemade bomb fashioned from an 81-mm mortar explosive. Bomb experts safely deactivated the ordnance. The post Attempted NGCP tower bombing foiled appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
