Celebrating 77 Years of Danish-Philippine Diplomatic Relations through creativity
On 28 September, Denmark and the Philippines marked 77 years of strong diplomatic ties by emphasizing their shared passion for design and creativity. To honor this milestone, the Royal Danish Embassy Manila staged two projects that capture the fusion of Filipino creativity and uniqueness of Danish design, reflecting the richness of the countries’ longstanding relationship. Bridging our countries through LEGO One of the most symbolic representations of this mutual appreciation for creativity is the iconic LEGO – a Danish brand that has found its way to the hearts of many Filipino families, collectors, builder communities, and creative enthusiasts. You can also meet talented Filipinos working in LEGO headquarters in Denmark, driving design processes for various LEGO sets that land on toy store shelves worldwide. Venturing into the heart of the Philippines' historical richness, Danish Ambassador FranzMichael “Dan-Dan” Mellbin and Philippine Ambassador Leo Herrera-Lim explored the Philippines in bricks at the iMake History Fortress LEGO Education Center. The Education Center, nestled in historic Fort Santiago, is a joint project by the Royal Danish Embassy Manila, the Intramuros Administration, and Felta Multimedia, Inc and serves as an exhibition of historical and cultural landmarks in the Philippines – all built using LEGO. The center also conducts workshops to train the youth in architecture, design, engineering, and creativity using LEGO Education modules. Guided by the shared vision of fostering strong connections, the Ambassadors, along with Intramuros Administrator Joan Padilla, Felta Brand Activation Officer Jed Abiva-Sazon, Mme. Eva Fischer-Mellbin, and Mme. Fides Herrera-Lim, took the lead in building a symbolic bridge using LEGO as a representation of the strong connection of the two countries spanning over seven decades. Filipino art LEGO-fied From architectural wonders, LEGO bricks were creatively used as building blocks for classic masterpieces of Filipino maestro and National Artist, Fernando Amorsolo. Project AMORsolo, a mosaic LEGO exhibition by Pinoy LEGO Users Group (PinoyLUG) pays homage to the enduring legacy of the first Filipino National Artist. The exhibit replicates Amorsolo’s iconic paintings “Bayanihan”, “Dalagang Bukid”, and “Early Traders” using LEGO. To support PinoyLUG and masterpieces of Fernando Amorsolo, the Embassy hosted a Project AMORsolo installation in October 2023. During the event, PinoyLUG also unveiled a LEGO brick mosaic based on the iconic Danish artwork “Anna Ancher and Marie Krøyer on the beach at Skagen” by Michael Ancher, specially designed for the celebration. Gracing the event were members of the Amorsolo family including the artist’s daughter Slyvia Amorsolo Lazo and grandson Fernando “Nandy” Amorsolo Lazo, who now leads the Fernando C. Amorsolo Art Foundation dedicated to the promotion of the maestro’s unique style and artistic vision. Named after a playful combination of the Filipino artist’s name and the Spanish term for “love” (amor), Project AMORsolo was born out of interest of PinoyLUG’s members during the pandemic to build projects that go beyond LEGO’s usual notion of “play”, but also represents the Philippines’ rich art and creative culture. Project AMORsolo has been showcased in the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Manila City Hall, and shopping malls around Luzon, and now at the Danish Residence. Wielding the power of design together Both events contribute to the Embassy’s “Design Matters” campaign. This aims to celebrate and increase awareness on Denmark’s design values and drive for innovation while appreciating the Philippines’ artistic heritage and ingenuity. Danish design, characterized by simplicity, functionality, and minimalism, is a way of life. The campaign aims to inspire Filipinos about the beauty and practicality of Danish design, connecting it to the Filipino tradition of craftsmanship and vibrancy. Since September, the Embassy has featured testimonials, parallel design concepts, and collaborative efforts to integrate design thinking into policies. The Embassy looks forward to continue supporting the Philippines in cultivating a deeper appreciation for design and translate creative ideas to meaningful efforts set to improve Filipinos’ lives. Tourney teaches architecture students design innovation
Housing design standards are growing more complex and demanding every year. The current 6.5 million housing backlog is adding to the complexity of the problem, with housing demand expected to balloon to 22.6 million units by the end of 2040. [caption id="attachment_175348" align="aligncenter" width="1157"] (From left) Benilde students Brigett Mae Domingo, Victoria Marice Cumpas, and Andrew Benidick Oliver present their output to architect Carlos Joselito Gutierrez during their consultations.[/caption] To address the growing needs, architects continuously improve their design to address issues of proper land use and the cost of housing units. “Currently, the challenge is the realization of working on limited space,” said Architect Carlos Joselito Gutierrez who’s also an educator. “But this is the essence of service learning. It is not easy for them, but they are learning that this is the reality we must work with as designers.” Property developer PHINMA Properties has teamed up with the Architecture Program of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde — School of Environment and Design to challenge architecture students to create innovative and sustainable living design solutions. At least 80 students, divided into 21 teams, were tasked to submit a schematic proposal for three housing typologies for the middle-class population: 50-square-meter lot townhouses, 80 sqm and 125 sqm single attached homes. The groups were split into seven units for three field categories and competed for three slots in each area designation. They were briefed on the corporate mission, project portfolio, target market, general design guidelines and the typical subdivision outline to understand the requirements and assist them in coming up with drafts that address the market’s needs. The class is currently studying the ARHOUSE or HOUSING. This three-unit lecture-based course aims to widen the perspective of the different settings and conditions of the Philippine shelter programs. With the understanding that they are dealing with Filipino-designed residences of which feasibility is an increasing consideration, Gutierrez shared that this serves as a good training exposure for the artistic Benildeans. “Service learning is seen as an essential part of growth for architecture students,” he stated. “They will experience how it is to work with real-life situations.” Nine groups will be shortlisted by the esteemed panel of experts and professionals from PHINMA Properties based on their compliance with the class conditions, innovation, buildability, ecological and sustainability impact, and functionality aesthetics after their first submission round. “PHINMA Properties’ mission revolves around reshaping the urban landscape, fostering community building and embracing the bayanihan spirit in all our designs,” president and CEO of PHINMA Properties Raphael B. Felix said. “We challenged participants in the competition to keep this vision in mind, aiming to create designs that renew the urban landscape, promote sustainability and forge stronger community bonds.” “We aspire to embark on more projects and collaborations, not only in house architecture but also in urban planning and energy efficiency,” he furthered. “We believe there are countless aspects to explore and tap into the youth’s ideas and support them into reality.” SED Dean Architect Dottie Asela Domingo likewise emphasized the valuable opportunity for both parties that underpin this collaboration. “With the meeting of minds, we learn from each other and dare to come up with new ideas and design concepts.” “The industry players have the tested knowledge from professional practice,” she said. “The students, on the other hand, have unbridled creativity, as we allow their youthful energy, imagination and passionate ideals to be explored to create new human-centered design solutions to existing environmental problems.” The finalists will be meticulously screened anew by PHINMA Properties officials at PHINMA Plaza in Rockwell Center, Makati City, for another demonstration this month. Go calls for vigilance, continued bayanihan
Recognizing the heightened vulnerability that comes with the onset of the typhoon season, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go emphasized the importance of preparedness and cooperation during typhoon season, urging citizens to stay informed about weather updates and heed the advice of local authorities to ensure their safety and that of their families. Go made the remarks as his team provided grocery packs to 500 typhoon “Egay” victims in Kalinga on Thursday, 10 August, in coordination with Governor James Edduba. In Tabuk City, Kalinga, the relief operations were held at Purok Isla and Purok 2 in Barangay San Juan, and Purok Vicente in Barangay Magsaysay As part of his commitment to ensure the welfare of Filipinos, Go reminded the beneficiaries that there are six Malasakit Centers in the Cordillera Administrative Region if they require assistance to cover their medical expenses. These Malasakit Centers are located at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, Benguet General Hospital in La Trinidad, Far North Luzon General Hospital and Training Center and Conner District Hospital in Apayao, and Luis Hora Memorial Regional Hospital and Bontoc General Hospital in Mountain Province. With a total of 158 centers established nationwide, the Malasakit Centers program has already provided assistance to more than seven million indigent patients. This initiative was spearheaded by Go and later formalized under Republic Act 11463, a legislative measure he principally authored and sponsored. Meanwhile, Go called on the government to provide the structure for a truly integrated and comprehensive national sports program linking grassroots sports promotion to elite sports development, and encourage all local government officials to promote the development of sports in the countryside. Go made the remarks during the public hearing of the Committee on Sports Monday, 14 August where he tackled the Philippine National Games Bill and the upgrading of incentives for Para Athletes Bill. ‘Bagong Pilipinas’ logo produced at zero cost
The Presidential Communications Office produced the new governance brand "Bagong Pilipinas (New Philippines)" without incurring any costs to the government, Malacañang said on Sunday. The Palace made an explanation amid recent controversies over the country's tourism campaign and the new logo of the Philippine Amusement Gaming Corp. "The logo was produced internally by the Presidential Communications Office and underwent complete staff work to ensure adherence to the heraldic code," PCO said in a statement sent to reporters in a Viber message. "The Bagong Pilipinas logo embodies the Marcos Administration’s vision for the country, emphasizing unity, involvement, and the bayanihan culture as the main fibers and components for its full realization," PCO added. The communications arm of Malacañang explained that the newly-unveiled Bagong Pilipinas logo is a visual representation of the Philippines' journey to the future. The logo features three red stripes, symbolizing significant historical development periods: the post-war agricultural and rural development, the post-colonial period, and the current metropolitan development. According to the PCO, blue stripes represent the goals for the future — a progressive Philippines that leverages technological advancement in pursuing sustainable industrial development. The rising sun signifies the dawn of a new Philippines, symbolizing the country's desire to take center stage in the global market and community of nations. The weave pattern illustrates the interconnectedness and unity of the Filipino people, as the vision of a Bagong Pilipinas can only be achieved through collective effort, collaboration, and a shared commitment to progress. "Just as individual strands come together to form a strong and intricate weave, the Filipino people, with their diverse backgrounds and talents, as well as rich cultural heritage, contribute to the strength of the nation," PCO said. In a separate Memorandum Circular, Marcos told all national government programs and projects to use his administration's "Bagong Pilipinas" name. Memorandum Circular 24 — dated 3 July but wasn't immediately made public until over the weekend — told all government agencies, companies, state universities, and colleges to follow the administration's rules, strategies, and goals. "Bagong Pilipinas is the overarching theme of the administration’s brand of governance and leadership, which calls for deep and fundamental transformations in all sectors of society and government, and fosters the State’s commitment towards the attainment of comprehensive policy reforms and full economic recovery,” the memorandum read. MC 24 added that the new campaign is "characterized by a principled, accountable, and dependable government." The memorandum mentioned that all national government agencies should use the "Bagong Pilipinas" logo on their letterheads, websites, official social media accounts, and other documents connected to the government's flagship programs. ‘Bayanihan sa Barangay’ launched
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the local government of Makati City kicked off on Tuesday the “Bayanihan sa Barangay” project at Barangay Bangkal as part of the agency’s clean-up drive aimed to help densely populated areas and bring the agency’s services closer to the public. MMDA acting chairperson Atty. Don Artes said the project aims to raise public awareness on the importance of proper waste disposal. Personnel from MMDA offices such as Flood Control and Sewerage Management Office, Health, Public Safety and Environmental Protection Office, Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group and Traffic Engineering Center conducted various activities and services such as drainage de-clogging, sidewalk clearing operations, painting of pedestrian lanes and installation of road signage. The agency also conducted orientation sessions on anti-smoking, anti-littering, solid waste management, disaster preparedness and trash-to-cash programs. Artes also said the agency have already submitted the names of individuals who will be part of the Tupad Program of the Department of Labor and Employment, and who will be deployed to local government units to assist with the declogging operations. “The agency plans to conduct the ‘Bayanihan sa Barangay’ project on all Metro Manila LGUs,” Artes said. The MMDA chief also called for the public’s help in maintaining the cleanliness in their surroundings. Meanwhile, the MMDA TEC has recently recorded the highest vehicle volume count plying EDSA numbering to 425,890 vehicles from the previous high of 405,822 in 2019. Even with the increase in volume of vehicles, Artes said the travel speed along EDSA has improved from 21.67 kph last January 2020 to 24.98 kph recorded last 22 May of this year. Artes also said the number of motorcycle-related accidents has decreased tremendously along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City after the implementation of the motorcycle lane. The implementation of Exclusive Motorcycle Lane along Commonwealth Avenue started last March 2023 to help reduce the number of fatal road crashes involving motorcycles and to improve traffic flow. An initiative of Go aimed at providing accessible healthcare assistance to all, particularly for poor and indigent patients, the Malasakit Centers are one-stop shops that house concerned agencies with available medical assistance programs, such as the DSWD, Department of Health, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. The Malasakit Centers Act was principally authored and sponsored by Go in 2019. To date, 157 centers have been established and have benefitted over seven million particularly poor and indigent Filipinos nationwide, according to DOH. Likewise, one of the key initiatives mentioned by Go was the establishment of Super Health Centers. He praised the groundbreaking ceremony of a Super Health Center in Samal town which he attended earlier that day and also aided indigents in that town. He revealed plans of the government, in partnership with LGUs and fellow lawmakers, to build similar facilities in other municipalities of Bataan. Such centers would offer basic medical services, including prenatal care and childbirth facilities. As part of his unwavering commitment to bolster the province's development amid crisis situations, Go, who also serves as Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, likewise supported several projects in the province. These include the construction of a drainage canal in Abucay and Dinalupihan; the construction of Orani District Hospital with 150-bed capacity; construction of multipurpose buildings in Bagac, Balanga City, Dinalupihan, Hermosa, Limay, Orion and Pilar; acquisition of ambulance units in Pilar and Samal; and construction of a slaughterhouse in Hermosa. He then recognized local officials for their untiring service. Among them were 3rd District Bataan Representative Gila Garcia, Governor Joet Garcia, Balanga City Vice Mayor Vianca Gozon, among others. Drawing inspiration from the Filipino spirit of bayanihan, Go encouraged everyone to continue embodying solidarity and compassion. “Sa ating mga kababayan, nawa'y patuloy nating ipakita ang diwa ng bayanihan. Magtulungan tayo sa ating mga pamilya, mga kapitbahay, at mga kaibigan. Sa pamamagitan ng pagkakaisa at pagmamalasakit, malalagpasan natin ang anumang pagsubok na ating haharapin,” concluded Go. Bong Go assists indigents in Indigents in Zambales
Amid the World Health Organization’s lifting of the global health emergency status of COVID-19, Senator Bong Go reminded the public to make health their top priority while the government continues to exert great efforts to recover from the pandemic. In a video message during the relief efforts in Botolan and Iba, Zambales on Monday, 8 May, Go, head of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, encouraged the public to remain vigilant and still follow health protocols. He underscored that while the threat of COVID-19 continues, the Filipinos’ ‘bayanihan’ spirit must continue as well. He urged the eligible public to remain supportive of the government’s pandemic efforts by participating in the national vaccination drive. “Mga kababayan ko, ilang taon na po tayong nasa pandemya. Kaya nakikiusap po ako sa inyo na huwag po maging kumpiyansa. Kahit ni-lift na ng WHO ang global health emergency, andiyan pa rin po ang banta ng COVID-19. Magpabakuna at magpabooster shots na po kayo dahil ang bakuna po ang tanging susi sa ngayon para makabalik tayo sa normal na pamumuhay,” said Go. He then offered to help those with medical issues. The senator advised them to visit President Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Hospital in Iba where there is a Malasakit Center to assist them with their medical expenses. The Malasakit Centers program was institutionalized under Republic Act No. 11463 which Go principally authored and sponsored in the Senate. The Act aims to provide convenient access to various government assistance to particularly poor and indigent patients and help them with their hospital bills. Go’s team distributed snacks to a total of 390 struggling residents at Barangay Panan Hall in Botolan and the Sports Complex gymnasium in Iba. The senator also gave away cellular phones, shoes, and balls for basketball and volleyball to select recipients. Continuing his message, Go maintained that necessary funds have been allocated by last year for the Department of Health to construct Super Health Centers in Iba, Botolan, and Castillejos. Advocated by Go, Super Health Centers are medium versions of polyclinics and are bigger than rural health units, which offer basic services, such as database management, out-patient, birthing, isolation, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: x-ray, ultrasound), pharmacy and ambulatory surgical unit. Through the collective efforts of fellow lawmakers, sufficient funds had been allocated for 307 Super Health Centers in 2022 and 322 in 2023. DOH, the lead implementing agency, identifies the strategic areas where they will be constructed. In its Resolution No. 205 dated 8 August 2022 the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Zambales pronounced Go as its adopted son, noting that the senator has "embodied the spirit of good governance and public service" by exerting great efforts to help the whole province. Meanwhile, in a resolution adopted by the Sangguniang Bayan on June 23, 2022, Go was also proclaimed as an adopted son of Iba, citing that Go has shown a big heart for the country, especially to local government units where he poured government resources to empower LGUs. In line with his commitment to helping build back the city and the rest of the province, Go supported the rehabilitation of roads in Botolan, Masinloc, San Felipe, San Marcelino, and Olongapo City; rehabilitation of the public market in San Antonio; construction of a seawall in Masinloc; and construction of two multipurpose buildings and installation of solar powered street lights in Botolan. “Mga kababayan ko, mag-ingat po tayo. Magdasal po tayo, magtulungan po tayo, magbayanihan po tayo, magmalasakit po tayo sa ating kapwa Pilipino. Magtiwala lang po kayo sa gobyerno at makakaahon din po tayo bilang nagkakaisang mamamayang Pilipino,” encouraged Go. OVP sets up more learning hubs in areas with internet access concerns
With the ongoing distance learning classes, Vice President Leni Robredo’s office continues to set up more learning hubs in communities nationwide to address internet access concerns. (OVP / MANILA BULLETIN) Robredo announced the opening of 55 additional learning hubs soon in areas where they are needed on top of the 13 pilot sites. She gave the public a first glimpse of the learning hub during a tour on Monday in Barangay Pinagbuhatan, Pasig City. Joining her was Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto. “We are excited because we have opened 13 of these hubs during the first month. I will also visit the others,” Robredo, who went live on her Facebook account, said in Filipino. “Hopefully, this week and next week. We will then open 55 other sites,” she added. For the pilot run of the learning hub in Pasig City, Robredo’s office partnered with JCI Manila and Catholic group “Ligaya ng Panginoon (Joy of the Lord).” Six students can only be accommodated per schedule in the learning center, where health and safety protocols are strictly being observed. The walk-ins are not allowed so students who wish to use the hub should pre-register for their assigned schedules. The Office of the Vice President initiated the establishment of the community learning hubs as part of its Bayanihan E-skwela program to help students who don’t have the capacity to study at home.
