Mom who killed children over religion gets life sentence
An American mother who believes in the second coming of Jesus Christ was sentenced on Monday to life imprisonment without parole for murdering two of her children and conspiring to kill her husband’s ex-wife. Judge Steven W. Boyce handed the sentenced to Lori Vallow at a court in the northwestern US state of Idaho. “You are sentenced to the custody of the State Board of Corrections to serve the maximum allowed sentence,” the judge said. Prosecutors alleged that Vallow justified the murders with her religious beliefs. She claims to be a goddess charged with preparing humanity for the second coming of Christ and can talk with angels. In 2019, her 16-year-old daughter Tylee Ryan and adopted seven-year-old son Joshua “JJ” Vallow went missing. Vallow and husband Chad Daybell, a self-published author of several apocalyptic novels, never reported that the children were missing, and their bodies were found in June 2020 on his property in Idaho. It also emerged that several people associated with Vallow and Daybell had died in recent years. These included Daybell’s wife Tammy, who died ostensibly of natural causes in October 2019, just weeks before the couple moved to Hawaii. Vallow, raised a Mormon, became increasingly radical in her religious beliefs over time. Vallow met Daybell, the leader of a radical Mormon sect that was preparing for the end times, at a religious conference in Utah in 2018. US ‘doomsday’ mother found guilty of murdering children
A US mother with "doomsday" religious beliefs was found guilty Friday of murdering two of her children and conspiring to kill her husband's ex-wife. Lori Vallow was on trial in the northwestern US state of Idaho over the deaths of her 16-year-old daughter Tylee Ryan and adopted seven-year-old son Joshua "JJ" Vallow. Vallow, who has reportedly claimed to be a goddess charged with preparing humanity for the second coming of Christ, faces up to life in prison without parole. Her fifth husband Chad Daybell -- the self-published author of several apocalyptic novels -- will soon go on trial separately over similar charges, which also include the murder of his first wife, Tammy. The couple's "religious beliefs" were cited by prosecutors as a factor in the murders, and their story was the subject of a Netflix true-crime documentary series "Sins of Our Mother," released last year. The case first drew national headlines in late 2019 following the disappearance of Vallow's children, which was first reported to authorities by Joshua's grandparents. The police inquiry quickly took a macabre turn as it emerged that several people associated with Vallow and Daybell had died in recent years, and she was arrested in Hawaii months later. Vallow's third husband, Joseph Ryan -- Tylee's father -- had died in 2018 of a heart attack. She was in the process of divorcing her fourth husband, Charles Vallow, when he was killed by a gunshot, fired by her now-deceased brother, in July 2019. In October 2019, Daybell's wife Tammy died ostensibly of natural causes. Vallow and Daybell moved to Hawaii a few weeks later, where they married. Vallow and Daybell never reported that the children were missing, and their bodies were found in June 2020 on property owned by Daybell in Idaho. The judge agreed to take the death penalty off the table for Vallow, whose sentencing date has not been set. Daybell has pleaded not guilty to all charges, and could still face the death penalty if found guilty. Vallow, raised a Mormon, became increasingly radical in her religious beliefs over time, coming to believe she could communicate with angels. In 2018, she met Daybell -- the leader of a radical Mormon sect that was preparing for the end times -- at a religious conference in Utah. Her previous husband Charles Vallow said she had claimed to be "a god assigned to carry out the work of the 144,000 at Christ's second coming." Some religions believe that 144,000 of the faithful will be resurrected during the Apocalypse to spend eternity in heaven. Prosecutors also claimed a financial motive for the crimes. Vallow was also convicted of grand theft, having obtained social security benefits intended for her already deceased children. Daybell is charged with insurance fraud. Korean club drafts MJ Phillips
Decorated middle blocker MJ Phillips has just realized her dream of playing abroad after getting drafted to the Korean V. League on Friday. The Petro Gazz standout was picked fifth overall by the Gwangju AI Peppers during the 2023 KOVO Women’s Asian Quota Draft held online. Phillips, a two-time Best Middle Blocker in the Premier Volleyball League, was the only Filipina to get drafted as reinforcement for the lucrative Korean club league among six other local stars who were invited in the Draft. “Maraming salamat (Thank you) for picking me. Thank you. It's been a dream since I was a little girl, so I'm very excited to start the season and yeah, I hope the Peppers' fans are excited as well,” Phillips, who was instrumental in helping the Angels win the PVL Reinforced Conference crown last year, said. The 27-year-old Filipino-American joined the 2023 draft class of elite Asian players chosen by the seven clubs in the highly-competitive league. Thai star Pornpun Guedpard was picked first overall by the Hwaseong IBK Altos, followed by compatriot Wipawee Srithong for the Suwon Hyundai Hillstate, Indonesian Megawatti Pertiwi was drafted by Daejeon KGC as fourth pick while Thailand’s Thanacha Sooksod joined defending champion Gimcheon Hi-pass. The no. 6 pick was Indonesian Mediol Yoku for GS Caltex Seoul KIXX while Japanese winger Reina Tokoku completes the draft after getting the nod from four-time champion and last year’s runner-up Incheon Heungkuk Pink Spiders. Phillips’ fast-paced game, experience and energy would give the AI Peppers a much-needed boost after finishing last in the previous season. “You'll see a lot of grit, of passion, and a lot of hard-hitting balls,” the 6-foot Phillips vowed. Other Filipinas who tried their luck were setter Jia Morado-de Guzman of Creamline, Mylene Paat of Chery Tiggo, Dindin Santiago-Manabat of Akari and F2 Logistics’ Majoy Baron and Iris Tolenada. Meanwhile, Cignal’s Marck Espejo, JP Bugaoan, and Manuel Sumanguid III have been invited to the face-to-face men’s tryout in Jeju Island, along with Jau Umandal of AMC-Cotabato.
