High-powered firearm seized from Samar clash
CATBALOGAN CITY — Government troops seized one high-powered firearm in the latest encounter with the communist New People’s Army in Samar last Wednesday, 17 May at Barangay Mabuhay, Gandara. A report from the 8th Infantry Division said the troops of the 87th Infantry Battalion were conducting a Focused Military Operation when it engaged in a firefight with 10 NPA members operating in the area early morning on the said day. Seized during the encounter were one Bushmaster rifle, two M16 rifle magazines and a backpack with personal belongings. The Commanding Officer of the 87th Infantry Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Luzelito Betinol renewed his call to the remaining CPP-NPA to abandon the armed struggle, lay down their arms, and return to the fold of the law. “The government already prepared programs that will help the former rebels as they will reintegrate back into the community. The government is sincere in helping them start their life anew,” Betinol said. 8th Infantry Division Commander, Major General Camilo Ligayo lauded the accomplishment of 87IB and vowed to continue the Army’s intensive operations against the Communist Terrorist Groups. “I congratulate the troops of 87IB for their contribution to our fight in ending the local communist armed conflict. To our constituents in Eastern Visayas, rest assured that we will continue our relentless efforts of ensuring peace and security and putting an end to the decades-long problem of insurgency,” Ligayo said. DFA: 86 Pinoys in Sudan request repatriation
The Department of Foreign Affairs on Thursday said at least 86 overseas Filipino workers in Sudan are requesting immediate repatriation after a clash between the Sudanese army and paramilitaries erupted anew in the country. Citing a report from the Philippine Embassy in Egypt, Foreign Affairs spokesperson Tess Daza said that as of the moment, 86 of some 400 OFWs in the resource-rich North African nation have requested evacuation. Daza also said the number of OFWs in Sudan had increased from 258 to 400. So far, “no confirmed injury or casualty from the Filipino community has been reported,” she reported. But earlier in the day, DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Affairs Eduardo Jose de Vega said in a separate interview that an OFW in Sudan had been injured after being hit by a stray bullet. De Vega did not identify the injured OFW, but said he is “recovering.” Meanwhile, the DFA said that the Philippine Honorary Consulate in Khartoum is already in coordination with the Philippine Embassy in Cairo to facilitate evacuation and provide relief goods to Filipinos there. The agency urged Filipinos in Sudan to coordinate with the consulate office or embassy so they may be provided assistance. Filipinos in Sudan may contact the Philippine Consulate in Khartoum through telephone number (+249)91 239 9448 or via e-mail at phil.cons@elnefeidigroup.com. Samar clash leaves 2 NPA dead
TACLOBAN CITY — Two guerilla fighters of the New People’s Army were killed in a clash with soldiers from two Philippine Army battalions in Basey, Samar on 14 April 2023. Reports from the 8th Infantry Division disclosed that the two rebels died when troops from the 46th Infantry Battalion and 63rd Infantry Battalion encountered some 17 NPA fighters belonging to Bugsok Platoon, Sub-Regional Committee Sesame in Barangay Mabini, Basey, Samar. The clash, which lasted for 20 minutes, resulted in the death of two NPA members and the recovery of one M16 rifle, two M653 rifles, assorted magazines and ammunition, three bandoliers and other personal items. Capt. Jefferson Mariano said the two military units were responding to reports from the residents regarding the presence of armed men in their community. He added that it is a normal practice for two units to respond to the same complaint especially if the enemy’s force is big. The encounter site, Barangay Mabini, is one of the remotest villages in Basey town and a former stronghold of the NPA. In 2020, the military discovered a bomb making camp of the NPA in the area. The two casualties were identified as Ponciano Ocenar, alias Lobo, a former commanding officer of the Platoon 4 of the Regular Guerilla Unit under the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee and Rene Orio alias Dario. Mariano said the 801st Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army, which has jurisdiction of the area, has already contacted the family of the dead rebels for a formal turnover of their bodies. Brigadier General Lenart Lelina, commander of the 801st Infantry Brigade, in a statement, said there could be more rebels who were wounded in the clash based on blood stains that were found on the directions where they fled. Lelina appealed to the remaining NPA members to lay down their arms and return to the folds of the law as the Army will continue its offensive operation against the Communist Terrorist Groups. “It is never too late for you to lay down your arms and be with your families who are waiting for your return. The government has prepared programs and services to help you start anew,” Lelina said. The post Samar clash leaves 2 NPA dead appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
