‘The Cheating Game’ director thinks Julie Anne is superstar material
GMA Public Affairs, GMA Network’s news and public affairs division, is now producing movies. Its debut feature, the romantic drama, The Cheating Game, stars real-life couple Julie Anne San Jose and Rayver Cruz, or “JulieVer.” San Jose plays Hope, an NGO worker who breaks up with her fiancé and colleague Brian (Martin del Rosario) for cheating on her. [caption id="attachment_164002" align="aligncenter" width="1708"] Martin del Rosario as Brian.[/caption] Trying to move on from her painful break-up, she starts looking for a new job until she is finally hired by a company specializing in social media content, where she channels all her negative energy. Hope soon meets a random guy, Miguel (Cruz), at a Kamuning overpass, who begins to actively pursue her without reason. Wary at first, she eventually warms up to Miguel, who tells her that he is giving her license to use him as her rebound. [caption id="attachment_164001" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] Rayver Cruz as Miguel.[/caption] But Hope’s promising new romance with Miguel is not that hopeful, as it is still overshadowed by a viral sex video that involves Brian its leakage may or may not involve those close to her. The Cheating Game is directed by fiction author Rod Marmol, who is best known for helming Cuddle Weather (2019) and Mata Tapang (2018). The story and concept are by Peabody award-winning documentary writer and producer Shao Masula, with Marmol and Jessie Villabrille serving as screenwriters. Julie Anne San Jose’s acting method In an exclusive chat with Daily Tribune, Marmol describes the 29-year-old San Jose, who showed impressive naturalism in her performance as the scorned woman. “I sincerely think that Julie has all the makings of a movie superstar. She has it all. Unparalleled professionalism. Magaan sa set (Easy to work with on set). Understands her character through and through,” Marmol said. In the film, San Jose’s Hope is frequently tearful. Effortless in her small and big dramatic scenes, she earned the admiration of her director, who reveals San Jose’s talent in shedding tears in front of the camera. “She knows not just one way of crying, marami (but many). She knows how to cry beautifully, how to wail uncontrollably, how to let only one tear drop fall, how to hold back her tears. She has mastered her instrument and this allows her to seamlessly morph from one character to another,” Marmol said. Marmol further told Daily Tribune that while they were filming The Cheating Game, San Jose was also shooting the final episodes of GMA’s hit series Maria Clara at Ibarra, praising the actress for her excellent command of her craft. “Ganoon siya kahusay (That’s how good she is),” he praised. Not your typical romance The Cheating Game cannot be simply boxed in a specific genre, making the film not your typical or formulaic love story. When asked about his influences as a director, Marmol candidly revealed his inspirations for GMA Public Affair’s first offering. “Some of my inspirations for this movie are films like Amélie (2001), Once (a 2007 Irish romantic musical drama) and, of course, Phoebe Waller-Bridges’ series Fleabag (on HBO). Gustong-gusto ko ng mga madaldal na pelikula na hindi takot mag-swimming sa emosyon (I am enamored with dialogue-heavy films that are not afraid to wallow in emotion). I’m a big sucker for beautifully-flawed female leads,” he explained. He also explained that his top three favorite filmmakers are Hirokazu Kore-eda, Jordan Peele and Lino Brocka. “Ang galing nilang maghimay ng kalungkutan (They are so good at dissecting sadness),” he explained. For the film’s style, treatment and color palette, which sometimes shifts to dreamy, with a touch of European vibe but highlights the nitty-gritty reality of Metro Manila, Marmol does not take credit for it alone. “Regarding the treatment of The Cheating Game, tingin ko ay (I think it is the) combined effect iyon ng (of the) talent ng core team namin (of our core team). Our assistant director is Chad Cabigon, who has mounted dozens of the most-awarded Filipino films of the past decade. Our director of photography is Arbi Barbarona, an Urian-winning filmmaker from Davao. Our production designer, this is his first movie, Kenneth Villanueva. Kaya, ang fresh pa ng mata and ramdam mo pa yung (So the vision is still fresh and you can feel that) hunger to be excellent. And syempre lahat ng ito, nakabalot sa (And of course, these are all under wrapped in the) guidance ng (of) GMA Public Affairs.” Millennial issues When asked what he is most excited about showing this movie to the Filipino audience, Marmol said: “I hope that the Filipino audience appreciates the honesty of the movie. We tried to capture the gray area that most people find themselves in when trying to heal from a traumatic heartache while building the foundation of a new romance. I also hope that they appreciate what Julie’s character, Hope Celestial, is trying to represent — which is the generation of overworked, underpaid millennials.” Asked about the challenges of directing The Cheating Game, Marmol said: “Challenges? Hmm, as always, marami (a lot) haha. Pero siguro, like most Filipino films, resources. It’s hard to compete with Hollywood movies when we only get less than a tenth of the resources that they get.” He explained that 95 percent of The Cheating Game was shot in only 11 days. “I hope that in the future, we get more investors betting on Filipino films so we can afford to prepare more and execute our stories in the best manner possible. We owe that to ourselves, we owe that to our stories, we owe that to our audiences.” The film also stars Winwyn Marquez, Yayo Aguila, Candy Pangilinan, Phi Palmos, Thea Tolentino, and Paolo Contis. The Cheating Game is now playing in cinemas. ‘Geneva patient’ the latest in long-term remission from HIV
A man dubbed the "Geneva patient" is the latest person with HIV to be declared in long-term remission -- however he did not receive a transplant with a virus-blocking gene mutation like previous cases, researchers said on Thursday. But they stopped short of saying the man was "cured" of HIV, warning there was still a chance the virus could still return. Five people have previously been declared cured of HIV: the Berlin, London, Duesseldorf, New York and City of Hope, California patients. All had bone marrow transplants to treat serious cases of cancer, receiving stem cells from a donor with a mutation of the CCR5 gene. This mutation is known to block HIV from entering the body's cells. In 2018, the Geneva patient similarly received a stem cell transplant to treat a particularly aggressive form of leukaemia. But this time the transplant came from a donor who did not carry the CCR5 mutation, French and Swiss researchers told a press conference in the Australian city of Brisbane as part of an AIDS conference that begins at the weekend. This means that the virus is still able to enter the patient's cells. However, 20 months after the man stopped taking antiretroviral treatment -- which reduces the amount of HIV in the blood -- doctors at Geneva University Hospitals have not found a trace of the virus in his system, the researchers said. While they cannot rule out that the man's HIV will return, the researchers said they consider him to be in long-term remission. 'Magical' "What is happening to me is magnificent, magical," the Geneva patient said in a statement. The patient, a white man who chose not to be named, was diagnosed with HIV in 1990. He had been on antiretrovirals until November 2021, when his doctors advised him to stop taking the treatment after the bone marrow transplant. Two previous cases, known as the Boston patients, had also received normal or "wild type" stem cells during their transplants. But in both cases, HIV returned a few months after they stopped taking antiretrovirals. Asier Saez-Cirion, a scientist at France's Pasteur Institute who presented the Geneva patient case in Brisbane, told AFP that if there was still no sign of the virus after 12 months "the probability that it will be undetectable in the future increases significantly". There were a couple of possible explanations for why the Geneva patient remains HIV free, Saez-Cirion said. "In this specific case, perhaps the transplant eliminated all the infected cells without the need for the famous mutation," he said. "Or maybe his immunosuppressive treatment, which was required after the transplant, played a role." 'Promising' Sharon Lewin, the president of the International AIDS Society holding the HIV science conference in Brisbane, said the case was "promising". "But we learned from the Boston patients that even a single" particle of the virus can lead to HIV rebounding, she cautioned. "This particular individual will need to be watched closely over the next months and years." While these cases of long-term remission raise hopes that one day HIV can truly be cured, the brutal and risky bone marrow transplant procedure is not an option for the millions of people living with the virus around the world. It is instead a last-ditch attempt to treat life-threatening cancer in people who also have HIV. Alexandra Calmy, head of the HIV unit at Geneva University Hospitals, acknowledged that the procedure is not an option for most HIV patients. But the exceptional case of the Geneva patient "opens the door to ways to reach lasting remission in the absence of a transplant carrying a mutation," she told an online press conference on Thursday. Saez-Cirion said the case had also encouraged the researchers to continue studying innate immune cells, which act as the first line of defence against various pathogens, and could help control the virus. For his part, the Geneva patient said he was now "looking to the future". The post ‘Geneva patient’ the latest in long-term remission from HIV appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Pride screenings showcase a rainbow of stories
Cinema is one of the most engaging artforms and creative expressions through which the LGBTQ+ community documents their lived experiences, conveys their desires and struggles, celebrates their identities and advocates for reforms and deeper understanding. Thus, film screenings are popular activities during LGBTQ+ Pride Month. This year, several institutions, streaming service companies and film groups are mounting screenings, giving these works more opportunities to reach more audiences. Here is a rundown: FDCP’s Pelikulaya LGBTQIA+ Film Festival The Film Development Council of the Philippines brings back the Pelikulaya LGBTQIA+ Film Festival this year with the theme “Mga Kuwentong Mapagpalaya” (Liberating Stories), and the aim is training the spotlight “on underrepresented members of the LGBTQIA+ community to promote a better understanding of inclusivity, diversity and equality.” According to Tirso Cruz III, FDCP chairman and chief executive officer, Pelikulaya “aims to raise awareness of LGBTQIA+ issues. We believe that by using the power of film, we can do our part in showcasing films that celebrate LGBTQIA+ stories. Hoping to create understanding of the lives, perspectives and advocacies shown in each film.” “With that, the FDCP sends our love and gratitude to you all for being with us, and we hope you’ll have a memorable experience in all of our Cinematheque Centres across the Philippines,” he added. To be held from 23 to 30 June, Pelikulaya will screen titles at the Cinematheque Centres in Manila, Davao, Iloilo, Nabunturan and Bacolod, and several theaters in Metro Manila including Cinema ‘76 and UP Film Institute’s Cine Adarna/Videotheque. Some of the titles will also be available for streaming on JuanFlix (www.juanflix.com.ph) starting 30 June with a subscription fee. NATO begins unprecedented air drill in ‘show of strength’
NATO will begin the largest air force deployment exercise in Europe in the alliance's history on Monday in a display of unity toward partners and potential threats such as Russia. The German-led "Air Defender 23" will run until 23 June and include some 250 military aircraft from 25 NATO and partner countries including Japan and Sweden, which is bidding to join the alliance. Up to 10,000 people will participate in the drills intended to boost interoperability and preparedness to protect against drones and cruise missiles in the case of an attack on cities, airports or sea ports within NATO territory. Presenting the plans last week, Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz of the German Luftwaffe said "Air Defender" was conceived in 2018 in part as a response to the Russian annexation of Crimea from Ukraine four years before, though he said it was "not targeted at anyone". He said that while NATO would defend "every centimeter" of its territory, the exercise would not "send any flights, for example, in the direction of Kaliningrad," the Russian enclave bordering alliance member states Poland and Lithuania. "We are a defensive alliance and that is how this exercise is planned," he said. US Ambassador to Germany Amy Gutmann said the drill would show "beyond a shadow of a doubt the agility and the swiftness of our allied force" and was intended to send a message to countries including Russia. "I would be pretty surprised if any world leader was not taking note of what this shows in terms of the spirit of this alliance, which means the strength of this alliance, and that includes Mr. Putin," she told reporters, referring to the Russian president. "By synchronizing together, we multiply our force." Russia's war on Ukraine has galvanized the Western military alliance set up almost 75 years ago to face off against the Soviet Union. Finland and Sweden, which long kept an official veneer of neutrality to avoid conflict with Moscow, both sought membership in NATO after Russia's February 2022 invasion. Under NATO's Article Five, an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. 'Great power competition' The exercise will include operational and tactical-level training, primarily in Germany, but also in the Czech Republic, Estonia and Latvia. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will visit pilots based at the Schleswig-Jagel airfield in northern Germany on Friday. General Michael Loh, director of the US Air National Guard, said NATO's duties were at an "inflection point". "A great deal has changed on the strategic landscape throughout the world, especially here in Europe," he said. The exercise will focus on "supplementing the permanent United States presence in Europe" as well as providing training "on a larger scale than what was usually accomplished on the continent", Loh added. He said many of the alliance pilots would be working together for the first time. "It's about fostering the old relationships that we have but also building new ones with this younger generation of airmen," he said. "And so this is about now establishing what it means to go against a great power in a great power competition." Gutmann said that while there were no plans to make "Air Defender" a recurring exercise, she added: "We have no desire for this to be the last." Asked about potential disruption to civilian air transport during the exercise, Gerhartz said the planners would do "everything in our power" to limit flight delays or cancellations. German authorities had warned that flight schedules could be impacted by the drills. The post NATO begins unprecedented air drill in ‘show of strength’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
At its 787 Dreamliner factory, Boeing prepares for takeoff
As airlines seek to fulfill customers' growing post-pandemic appetites for long-haul travel, Boeing is aiming to speed up production of its 787 Dreamliners after a period plagued by repeated delivery interruptions due to manufacturing defects. At a hangar in the US East Coast state of South Carolina, the plane begins to take shape on its first assembly line -- here, the wings, cockpit, cabin and tail are still in separate pieces. It will take about a month for the entire aircraft to come together, with the final touches added later, in the parking lot. The US aerospace giant has already managed to up its manufacturing rate from fewer than two 787s per month in 2021 to four, and is hoping to get up to five by the end of the year. On the second assembly line in the hangar, located in the city of North Charleston, three completed airplanes are inspected. They had to be returned for adjustments, after the discovery of several production flaws beginning in 2020. There are still several dozen other planes under inspection, but Boeing plans to move that review process to its factory in Everett, in Washington state, by the end of the year. That will allow them to devote the second assembly line in South Carolina solely to plane construction, meaning they can ramp up to 10 787s per month by 2025 or 2026. That would bring the factory close to Boeing's pre-pandemic production rate of 14 jets per month, which was achieved by splitting 787 construction between South Carolina and Washington state, before it was all consolidated to the East Coast in 2021. Boeing says it's not worried about potential cancelations from airline clients unhappy with the delays. "Our problem right now is more to just getting these planes in the hands of the customers," Lane Ballard, the 787 program's general manager said during a press visit to Boeing's South Carolina locations Tuesday and Wednesday, ahead of the Paris Air Show later this month. Despite the rebound in sales of its flagship medium-haul 737 MAX last year -- giving the company its best delivery numbers since 2018 -- Boeing is pinning its financial hopes on the 787, after four consecutive years in the red. Recent months have finally seen an uptick in orders for large planes, the market for which was already suffering before the drop in long-haul air traffic during Covid lockdowns. Boeing has historically dominated the high-margin long-haul manufacturing scene with its 787 and 777 configurations, competing with Airbus's A350 and A330. Now, with Boeing no longer producing its 747 jumbo jet, the lag on its 777 passenger model and the five-year delay in certification for its 777X, set for 2025, the company is counting on the 787. It took a gamble on the 787 line -- which launched in 2004 and began flying in 2011 -- by increasing its use of carbon fiber composites for the fuselage and wings. As a result, the plane is lighter and requires less fuel. Many of the aircraft's major parts are shipped in from Italy, Japan and Kansas in one of Boeing's so-called Dreamlifters -- modified 747s specially designed for carrying cumbersome equipment. And back in South Carolina, the back of the aircraft is built in an adjacent hangar next door. Betting on the 787 seems to have paid off so far: Boeing has received 250 orders for the plane just in the last six months. "By the end of this year, it's almost guaranteed the 787 will be the most popular passenger wide-body in history," with even more total purchases than the 777 or Airbus A330, Boeing vice president of commercial marketing Darren Hulst predicted.
