Probers checking for violations of safety rules in Cebu mall fire

CEBU CITY --- Fire investigators are looking into possible violations of fire safety rules by the management of Metro Ayala in Cebu City following the fire that broke out and damaged the department store on Friday evening. Supt. Ronaldo Orbeta, deputy director for operations of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Central Visayas, said on Saturday that they had received reports that Metro Ayala's sprinklers and fire alarm did not function. "We're conducting an investigation to determine whether or not there were violations. Two backhoe operators caught stealing shoes during Cebu mall fire

CEBU CITY -- Two backhoe operators were arrested by Ayala Center Cebu security guards who caught them stealing shoes at the Metro Department Store at the Ayala Center while firefighters were working to put out the blaze at the mall on Saturday morning. Security guard Revimelfe Serenas said he saw the two men -- identified as Arnel Villarta, 39, and Edwin Sarabia, 49, -- after a responding team of firefighters broke a wall of the mall.
