Melecio, La Salle still have Adamson s number in UAAP 81

De La Salle University has re-asserted its mastery over Adamson University now in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament. Battling back from a five-point deficit in the last three minutes of regulation and showing heart in overtime, the Green Archers got the better of the Soaring Falcons once more, 79-78, on Saturday at the MOA Arena. With the win, La Salle remains undefeated up against Franz Pumaren-coached Adamson – that’s seven straight wins since 2016. More importantly, with the win, the Taft-based team bounced back into the win column now at 4-3. “After that loss, we made sure na yung errors namin last game, ma-correct agad namin,” head coach Louie Gonzalez said post-game. It almost wasn’t meant to be as Sean Manganti put the Soaring Falcons up, 64-59, inside the last three minutes of the fourth quarter until Santi Santillan’s triple jolted life back into the Green Archers. Still, they were down by two with under a minute remaining before Aljun Melecio’s floater over the outstretched arms of Papi Sarr tied the tally and forced overtime. There, Santillan, Melecio, and Justine Baltazar got together for a 9-0 run and a 73-64 advantage in favor of their team. “Kahit may glitches pa rin, at least it’s good to see yung composure ng mga bata,” coach Louie said. Adamson would not quit, however, and Manganti’s triple pulled them to within 75-77 with 18.3 ticks to go on the clock only to see Kib Montalbo make good on two free throws to push La Salle ahead by four. Jerrick Ahanmisi hit another trey for the Soaring Falcons, but by then, only 0.5 seconds was left. Sent to the line, Melecio missed the first three throw and intentionally muffed again on the second to just let time run out. In the end, Melecio had 22 points on top of four rebounds and two assists while Santillan had 16 markers, nine boards, three dimes, and two blocks. Baltazar was also a force with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks of his own to help the Green Archers take control of solo fourth in the standings. For Adamson, Manganti topped the scoring column with 27 points and seven rebounds while Manganti had 23 markers, seven boards, and four assists to his name. Unable to finish off their opponents in regulation and unable to finish off their rally in overtime, however, they suffered a second straight setback and now stand in a three-way tie for the league lead at 5-2. PSC, Wushu Federation to extend support to late athlete s family

The Philippine Sports Commission and the Wushu Federation of the Philippines have assured its full assistance to the family of late wushu junior pool athlete Rastafari Daraliay, who died after a freak accident at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex Wushu dormitory last Saturday. In a press conference, WFP Secretary General Julian Camacho said "the WFP is shocked and saddened with the sudden death of one of our wushu family… Rastafari was a part of our national training pool with his sister." Meanwhile, PSC Chairman William Ramirez assured the family of the agency’s full support and a proper investigation on the matter. “With this unfortunate accident, it becomes a compelling position for the PSC to really fast-track the rehabilitation of our sports facilities and bring more security personnel and attendants on our dormitories,” added Ramirez. The 11-year old Daraliay has stayed on and off in the RMSC wushu dorm for the past three years as requested by his parents Vincent and Hazel Daraliay. On Saturday, September 29, at around 3 a.m., Rastafari fell off the top bunk of a double decker bed of Wushu room #8. He reportedly went back to sleep after telling his teammates he was okay, but never woke up. Rastafari’s remains lie in state at the Sanctuario de San Vicente, Tandang Sora, Quezon City before his cremation on Thursday, October 4. Report: Isaiah Thomas doubtful for start of camp

NBA.com staff report Isaiah Thomas' availability for training camp remains in question as he continues to work his way back from hip surgery, according to Nuggets reporter Christopher Dempsey of Altitude Sports. Asked about Thomas' recovery, Denver Nuggets President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly said Thomas is progressing but won't be rushed back. Isaiah Thomas continues to rehab from arthroscopic hip surgery in March. His availability for training camp next week remains in question. Here is Tim Connelly, #Nuggets President of Basketball Ops, on Thomas' status during an interview for Wednesday's Nuggets 360 on @AltitudeTV pic.twitter.com/E6192yk46N— Chris Dempsey (@chrisadempsey) September 18, 2018 “We’ll see. Like all of our guys, we want to be especially sensitive to Isaiah," Connelly said. "I think he probably has rushed back [in the past]. We want Isaiah to be right. So, he’s working his butt off a couple times a day with our guys. He’s getting better by the day. But we’re not trying to win the preseason. Whenever he’s ready, he’ll be out there and I’m sure he’ll be impactful.” Thomas, who played in just 32 games last season for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers, had had arthroscopic hip surgery back in March. The two-time All-Star signed with the Nuggets on July 12. Thomas, the 60th and last pick of the 2011 NBA Draft, made a name for himself as a clutch scorer with the Boston Celtics after his previous two teams (Sacramento and Phoenix) parted ways with him. In two-and-a-half seasons with Boston, the 5-foot-9 guard averaged 24.7 points and six assists per game. In 2016-17, Thomas was the driving force behind the Celtics' run to the Eastern Conference Finals while earning All-NBA Second Team honors along the way. That playoff run ended, however, with a hip injury that lingered well past Boston dealing him to Cleveland in exchange for Kyrie Irving. Thomas played just 15 games for the Cavaliers before he was again dealt, this time to the Los Angeles Lakers. He suited up in 17 games for the Lakers before hip surgery ended a season in which he shot just 37.3 percent. Over the summer, the Nuggets re-signed star center Nikola Jokic and sixth man Will Barton to a long-term contracts on July 9, roughly two weeks after drafting Michael Porter Jr. with the No. 14 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report......»»

Facing the Guns versus Butter Dilemma: Kilo Class Submarines for the Philippine Navy?

The Philippine government, for the first time since 1946, released a national security strategy (NSS) doctrine in July 2018. Entitled “Security and Development for Transformational Change and Well-being for the Filipino People,” the 59-page NSS provides a realistic assessment of the Indo-Pacific region as marked by “increased uncertainty and unpredictability.” It identifies the rivalry of the major powers as the “most important (regional) strategic concern” and notes that the Philippines’ geography is both a source of strength and vulnerability as it provides a strong temptation to expansionist powers. Learning from the lesson of history, the NSS emphasizes the need to increase the size and capability of the Philippine Navy (PN) and the Philippine Air Force (PAF) as quickly as possible. This is to enable these two armed services to be country’s external deterrence in the face of an uncertain and potentially dangerous Indo-Pacific region.
