Journalists in Ivory Coast remember French colleague killed 20 years ago
Ivorian and foreign journalists on Thursday paid homage to the memory of Radio France International correspondent Jean Helene, who was shot at point-blank range by a police officer in Abidjan 20 years ago. On the evening of 21 October 2003, Helene, RFI's 50-year-old correspondent in Abidjan, was shot in the head by a police sergeant with a Kalashnikov. The French reporter had been waiting near the national police headquarters for the release of eleven opponents of the regime of the then Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagbo. On Thursday, at a commemorative ceremony at the press center in Abidjan, government spokesman Amadou Coulibaly recalled that the killing had taken place in a "particular context of socio-political tension", a rebellion had broken out in 2002 cutting Ivory Coast in two. Helene's death is "a hideous scar, a shameful scar on the history of the press in Ivory Coast," he said, adding that although the policeman who fired the fatal shots, Theodore Dago Seri, had been sentenced in 2004 to 17 years in prison, "those responsible are still with us". Without mentioning any names, he recalled that the political leaders at the time had called on supporters "to be inventive, to take initiatives" against those accused of not being on their side. Representing RFI at the commemoration event, the station's former Africa department head, Yves Rocle, said that Helene, who had crisscrossed the African continent throughout his career, including covering the Rwandan genocide in 1994 -- had been dedicated to reporting the facts. After the ceremony, the assembled journalists made their way to the spot where Helene was gunned down, where bouquets were laid. Next week, RFI will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the murder of another of its journalists, Ghislaine Dupont, who was shot dead in northern Mali in November 2013, along with technician Claude Verlon who was accompanying her. Republicans pick ‘novice’ as 4th speaker nominee
Republicans have named a fourth candidate for speaker of the United States House of Representatives and hope to end two weeks of party division and a leaderless lower chamber. Louisiana’s Mike Johnson won an internal party vote just hours after previous nominee, Majority Whip Tom Emmer, buckled under a backlash led by former President Donald Trump and announced his withdrawal. Johnson — the vice chairman of the conference but a relative novice in politics — lost out to Emmer earlier in the day but quickly threw his hat back in the ring after his leadership colleague bowed out. Only 128 of Johnson’s colleagues voted for him in the final round of balloting, according to US media — with 29 preferring his rival, Florida lawmaker Byron Donalds, and another 44 casting their votes for someone else entirely. Like Johnson, Emmer had baselessly sown doubt over the validity of Biden’s 2020 election win over Trump, but supporters of the former president were angered by the majority whip voting to certify the result. Trump took to his Truth social website to brand Emmer a “globalist RINO” — short for “Republican in name only.” If Johnson were to succeed where his colleagues have failed, he would be the least experienced speaker in more than a century, having never chaired a committee or held a top leadership role. Moving up to the House from state-level politics only in 2017, Johnson could find himself presiding over a government shutdown in three weeks unless he can cut a 2024 budget deal with much more seasoned negotiators in the White House that is acceptable to his party. He would also be expected to lead the deeply fractured conference through upcoming fights over funding for Ukraine and Israel in their conflicts with Russia and Hamas. Tuesday’s disarray marked two weeks since the party’s first nominee to replace Kevin McCarthy, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, withdrew as it became clear he was nowhere near the 217 votes needed to be elected. Hard-line Trump ally Jim Jordan, the next nominee, flopped three times on the House floor as successively larger tallies of Republican opponents joined the Democrats to reject him. Jaymee Joaquin, ‘Games Uplate Live’ host, dies at 44
Filipina actress and host Jaymee Joaquin has passed away after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 44 years old. Colleague-turned-friend Corss Ebora-Valenton paid tribute to the former actress on 19 October. “She was powerful not because she wasn’t scared but because she went on so strongly despite the fear. You will be dearly missed, Jayms,” Valenton wrote. Valenton added that she was grateful for the opportunity to work and be reunited with Joaquin the previous year for Jaymee’s passion project titled Beautiful Scars, which chronicles Filipina breast cancer “thrivers.” “Itutuloy at tatapusin namin ang proyekto natin. Your legacy lives on with the @beautifulscarsdocu,” she added. Meanwhile, Joaquin’s cousin, Erika Geronimo, also shared the news of her death. “It is with a heavy heart that our family announces the passing of my cousin, Jaymee Topacio aka Jaymee Wins or Jaymee Joaquin. She lived an extraordinary life filled with adventure, laughter, and love. She inspired and touched a lot of lives through her advocacy and talent. She will be greatly missed and will always be in our loving memory as a strong woman,” Geronimo wrote. “A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered,” she concluded. Joaquin’s acting and hosting career in the Philippines blossomed when she was the game show jock for the late-night interactive show Games Uplate Live. She also appeared in numerous television shows and movies, such as Super Inggo 2: Ang Bagong Bangis (2007), Shake, Rattle and Roll 9 (2007), My Big Love (2008) and Tanging Ina Niyong Lahat (2008). In 2016, the former Star Magic actress was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite her cancer recurring four times and forcing her to go through multiple surgeries, Joaquin maintained a healthy and positive mindset. She ventured into blogging, podcasting and writing two books, titled That Sh*t Called Cancer and No-Hair Mama, Don’t Care. Moscow detains another American journalist
A Russian-American journalist working for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty has been detained in Russia and charged with failing to register as a foreign agent, her employer and a journalist watchdog group said Wednesday. Alsu Kurmasheva, an editor with the United States Congress-funded outlet’s Tatar-Bashkir service, “needs to be released so she can return to her family immediately,” RFE/RL acting president Jeffrey Gedmin said in a statement. “Alsu is a highly respected colleague, devoted wife and dedicated mother to two children,” Gedmin said. She is the second US journalist to be held by Russia in recent months. Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, has been detained since March, accused of spying. Kurmasheva was being held at a temporary detention center as of Wednesday evening, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said in a statement, citing state media Tatar-Inform. A representative of Russian human-rights news website OVD-Info told CPJ that Kurmasheva would “most likely” be transferred to pre-trial detention shortly. Kurmasheva lives in Prague, Czech Republic, but entered Russia on 20 May for a family emergency, the CPJ said. She was temporarily detained at the Kazan airport on 2 June before her return flight, where both her US and Russian passports were confiscated and she was fined for failing to register her American passport with Russian authorities, according to RFE/RFL. Citing Tatar-Inform, the CPJ said Kurmasheva is accused of having “deliberately conducted a targeted collection of military information about Russian activities via the Internet in order to transmit information to foreign sources” last year, and providing international authorities with “alternative analytical materials” as part of “information campaigns discrediting Russia.” Kurmasheva was awaiting the return of her passports when the new charges were announced Wednesday, the CPJ said, adding that if found guilty she faces up to five years in jail.
