Stitched in time: Likhang Habi Market Fair returns to weave through cultures
The 13th edition of the annual Likhang HABI Market Fair, organized by HABI: The Philippine Textile Council, is set to take place from 13 to 15 October at the Glorietta and Palm Drive Activity Center. This celebration, themed “Web of Woven Wonders,” promotes the Philippines’ rich textile legacy while embracing technology. [caption id="attachment_186369" align="aligncenter" width="1418"] A MASTER weaver from the Tagolwanen Women Weavers Association Inc.[/caption] Tradition and innovation “Web of Woven Wonders” pays homage to the World Wide Web, symbolizing the interconnectedness of people, places and textiles. The community is brought together via traditional fabrics and inventive weaves, Adelaida Lim, the former president of HABI, stressed, demonstrating their diversity and expert craftsmanship. “The way textiles tie and bind us to each other,” Lim said. “The country’s traditional textiles and the innovative weaves various groups of Filipinos have come up with are truly wonderful,” she added. “The diversity and beauty of finished products, and the consummate skill it took to make them are something we can all be proud of!” Designer Len Cabili, a strong advocate for traditional textiles and the woman behind Filip+Inna, praised HABI’s efforts in “pushing weaving into the forefront of Philippine culture.” Cabili highlighted how these textiles are a profound expression of the country’s culture and a testament to the “true value of handcrafted textiles and the unique processes” of its artisans. Following the challenges posed by the pandemic, the fair will host an impressive 72 vendors, including Creative Definitions, Ditta Sandico, Gifts and Graces and Ruyag PH, who represent numerous regional and cultural groups around the Philippines. The vendors will display a wide array of hand-woven products, including textiles, ready-to-wear clothes, bags, shoes, home accessories and furniture made from materials like piña, abaca and cotton. This year’s fair will occupy a bigger area, extending from the Glorietta Activity Center to the area in front of Palm Drive, to accommodate the expanding number of attendees. The current president of HABI, Mia Villanueva, emphasized the growth in participants and the association with local government organizations to promote their goods. [gallery columns="2" size="full" ids="186371,186372"] Embracing global threads As the nation’s de facto textile council, HABI encourages cooperation not only within the Philippines but also the ASEAN neighborhood. Since ASEAN nations are seen as vital sources of inspiration and ideas rather than rivals, the exhibition encourages exhibitors from their nations. Local designers have more options to this collaborative approach, which also allows them to absorb international best practices and experiences. Likhang HABI Market Fair is the climax of the year-round work that HABI has been doing since its founding in 2009. The show, which is sponsored by Ayala Land and the Ayala Foundation, gathers the finest handcrafted textiles, generating respectable employment possibilities and boosting sales for weavers across the Philippines. The fair is more than just a place to sell things; it’s also an opportunity to learn. HABI’s efforts include making documentaries called “The Threaded Traditions Series” about textiles from Panay Island, the Cordillera’s ikat and the Bagobo Tagabawa’s inabal. They’ve also published a book called Piña Futures: Weaving Memories and Innovations by Dr. Randy M. Madrid, edited by Felice Prudente Sta. Maria, which celebrates and explains the Philippines’ rich hand-weaving tradition. Paul Jatayna, an artist, will present a textile display this year that will focus on fresh and imaginative uses of textiles in an effort to draw in a younger audience. Weaving a sustainable future For the purpose of recognizing and developing the craft of hand-weaving, the fair also holds two weaving competitions: the second Eloisa Hizon Gomez Abaca Weaving Competition and the sixth annual Lourdes Montinola Pia Weaving Competition. Such events not only honor the best weavings but also promote creativity and the return of lost styles and techniques. HABI sets its sights on sustaining and advancing heritage fabrics made of locally grown natural fibers. As the 13th Likhang HABI Market Fair draws near, it stands as a celebration of history and creativity and ensures that hand-weaving and its place in the Philippines’ cultural fabric have a bright future. Proudly Filipino Fashion, Arts and Music
Our tradition lives on, thanks to the Philippine Heritage Society. We capped May off with a grand soiree for National Heritage Month entitled “Tertulia Flores de Mayo: A Celebration of Fashion, Arts & Music.” And that we did with aplomb. It was also a great setting for our photo ops as we strutted our stuff in Filipiniana outfits. Some went for classic, while others like me went for a modern twist to Filipiniana. Either way, every look was 100 percent fab! The fashion continued into the program featuring society’s beauties in glamorous gowns inspired by the Santacruzan. These were all designed by Oskar Peralta, Lito Perez, Frankie de Leon, Peri Diaz, Ole Morabe, Ronaldo Arnaldo and Shiela Apostol; while the opulent jewelry was all care of Gerry Sunga. [caption id="attachment_169529" align="aligncenter" width="1600"] Ronaldo Arnaldo, Frankie De Leon, Oscar Atendido, Oskar Peralta and Pando Manipon.[/caption] Even the live music took us back with nostalgic melodies and kundiman from the Lyric Opera of the Philippines. I kept my own dance moves to the music modern though! Good thing the UP Filipiniana Dance Group was there to represent the traditional dances. Comedian Prinsipe Makata also kept the night on a high note with an entertaining poetry reading. Brava to the head hermana, Prima Mache Torres-Ackerman! Plus to the Manila Hotel and the Intramuros Administration for their support. I heard through the grapevine (a.k.a. over wine) that the Society’s founders are already planting the seeds for a bigger and better Flores De Mayo 2024. Sign me up in advance! I just know it’s going to be amazing. Cheers, my amigos and amigas! The post Proudly Filipino Fashion, Arts and Music appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Beyond logos
After the “Love the Philippines” slogan fiasco, here comes the new Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation or Pagcor logo, unveiled by no less than the President, First Lady and the Speaker — the three most powerful people in the country — at the gaming agency’s 40th-anniversary celebration. I am curious as to what was on the minds of the VIP guests when they first saw the logo. Personally, I could not believe it, thinking that it was not serious or a prank even. I am not a graphic designer or an artist, but I can easily distinguish a well-thought-out design from the rest. I am not one to speak against Pagcor, but releasing a half-baked design to be the very symbol of your institution is next to unforgivable. But in defense of Pagcor, it is not an office mandated to market the Philippines. The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation is the government agency that handles the country’s lucrative gaming industry, and it brings in billions in fiscal revenue annually. Pagcor is not an agency mandated to produce commercials or advertisements to market a specific sector or industry, rather, its mandate is to regulate a highly complex business dominated by influential stakeholders both here and abroad. We cannot compare Pagcor to the Department of Tourism, whose mandate is to market the Philippines and its tourist sites. The DoT marketing budget is larger and its ad releases are expected to come under more scrupulous review since these will be shown on international media outfits, published in magazines abroad, and played repeatedly at global trade shows. Neither can we compare Pagcor to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. If we recall, the BSP was criticized during the last administration when it changed its minimalist modern logo to an eagle. The new logo, however, carried more weight since it was on the currency of the country. Philippine banknotes and coins bear the BSP logo, and any small deviation would mean spoilage and its use would constitute fraud which is punishable by law. This is not to say that we should forgive Pagcor for the substandard design. Its price tag was around P3 million, which is expensive, but if we take note of the background of the artist who came up with it, this may be acceptable. The artist was apparently behind known designs for events of the University of Santo Tomas and Metrobank, but these were not for corporate symbols such as a seal or logo. Could this have been a case of purposely hiring a contractor or artist to design something that he was not used to? Knowing the usual script of our government officials, they will keep mum about the design. When asked by reporters, they will surely stand by it. After some time, another fiasco will crop up that will cause Filipinos to forget about Pagcor, and later forgive. This cycle is all too familiar, it has become a trademark (or copyright) of our society, which the smarter ones tend to use and abuse. Then again, this can be among the small things we should not sweat about. The bigger thing, when it comes to Pagcor, is its efficient fiscal revenue collection and strong governance in an industry that is susceptible to corruption and crime. Managing the gaming industry is no easy task, and Pagcor Chairman Al Tengco and President Juanito Sañosa Jr. should be commended for withstanding pressures and showing strong leadership at the helm. At the end of the day, Pagcor will be judged by the revenue it brings in for the government, not the design of its logo. The post Beyond logos appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Cultural institutions celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride
Esteemed Philippine cultural institutions, Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Museum of the Philippines, displayed their support to the LGBTQ+ community with lights and flags during LGBTQ+ Pride Month last June. The CCP once again illuminated the façade of its iconic Main Building with rainbow colors, reiterating their support to the LGBTQ+ community, whose many members are part of the culture and the arts sector and have become important figures in shaping and enlivening Philippine culture. Its Production Design and Technical Services Division, under the supervision of Ricardo Eric Gabat Cruz, created the light show with multiple layers of wavy pattern gobos to achieve depth. The special lighting was on from 23 to 30 June, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. [caption id="attachment_153005" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] Photograph by Roel Hoang ManiponAt the National Museum of Anthropology.[/caption] Aside from the lighting, CCP also created a program in their outdoor screening project CCP Cinema Under the Stars for LGBTQ+ Pride Month. Shown on 23 June at the CCP Annex Parking were already classic Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros, a Cinemalaya festival full-length film entry directed by Auraeus Solito, and Gawad Alternatibo short films Gee-Gee at Waterina, directed by Mariami Tanangco-Domingo, and Pasilong, directed by Toni Cañete. [caption id="attachment_153006" align="aligncenter" width="2048"] Photograph courtesy of National MuseumWestern-Southern Mindanao Regional MuseumPride flags at the National Museum Western-Southern Mindanao Regional Museum in Zamboanga City.[/caption] On the other hand, the National Museum of the Philippines embellished their social media accounts with Pride theme and their buildings with Pride flags including the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of Anthropology and the National Museum of Fine Arts. Its site, area and regional museums all over the country also joined in in the celebration. Some — such as the NM Ilocos Regional Museum Complex in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur; the NM Western Visayas Regional Museum in Iloilo City, Iloilo; the NM Bohol Area Museum in Tagbilaran City, Bohol; the NM Eastern-Northern Mindanao Regional Museum in Butuan City; and NM Western-Southern Mindanao Regional Museum at Fort Pilar in Zamboanga City -— hung their own Pride flags. [caption id="attachment_153007" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] Photograph by Roel Hoang ManiponThe central atrium of the National Museum Bohol Area Museum is decorated with a large Pride flag.[/caption] “As inscribed in our vision statement, we at the National Museum of the Philippines strive to — among other things — visualize a Filipino nation, unified by a deep sense of PRIDE in their common identity. To all our LGBTQIA+ friends and allies, you are seen, at #KitaKitaSaNMP!,” the NMP stated in their Facebook page. NMP also held a contest for visitors to the Manila complex, encouraging them to wear their colorful outfits on Fridays of the June and awarding prizes for the first 30 joiners. “EveryGAY, the National Museum has been tirelessly making our spaces safe, open and inclusive to all people — not just this Pride Month — but throughout the whole year, too! BI making this great institution accessible for everyone, we are able to revolutionize our museums into a personal, cultural and educational experience that unify the Filipino people and TRANScends the differences in our identities, kaya #TayoTayoSaNMP!,” the NMP further said. Despite these shows of support, the Philippines still lack a national law preventing discrimination and marginalization of the LGBTQ+ community. Manila Day showcases city’s very best
The Manila Day parade and celebration of the capital city’s 452nd founding anniversary on Saturday, 24 June, were a rousing success, according to Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna. “I am so pleased with the outcome of the parade,” Lacuna said in a post-event interview. “The weather was perfect, and the participation rate was 100 percent. I would like to thank all of the participants for their hard work and dedication.” The event was held at Plaza Moriones and featured a spectacular presentation of dance, floats, and costumes by government and private entities. “It’s full of fun!” Lacuna said. “I am so proud of our city and our people. We showed the world what Manila is all about today.” The parade was organized by the Manila City government and involved all city departments. It was a four-month undertaking that required the coordination of all city officials, ranging from congressmen and councilors to police, firefighters, Filipino-Chinese business groups, health workers, professionals, hospital workers, and barangays. Each group gave their own numbers, complete with costumes and dance performances. Lacuna thanked all participants for their support and vowed to make next year’s Manila Day even bigger. “I promise that because of your support and love for our city, we will prepare for a bigger celebration next year,” she said. The parade was just one of the many events that took place in Manila on Saturday to celebrate the city’s 452nd founding anniversary. Other events included a beauty pageant, a concert, and a fireworks display. “This is a day to celebrate our city’s rich history and culture,” Lacuna said. “I am so proud to be the mayor of Manila, and I am excited to see what the future holds for our city.” Meanwhile, Malate candidate Gabrielle Lanzter was crowned Miss Manila 2023 during the Coronation Night held in the evening of 23 June at the Metropolitan Theater. A total of 22 women vied for the title of Miss Manila 2023, which showcased their beauty, intelligence, and commitment to making a positive impact in their community. Pride screenings showcase a rainbow of stories
Cinema is one of the most engaging artforms and creative expressions through which the LGBTQ+ community documents their lived experiences, conveys their desires and struggles, celebrates their identities and advocates for reforms and deeper understanding. Thus, film screenings are popular activities during LGBTQ+ Pride Month. This year, several institutions, streaming service companies and film groups are mounting screenings, giving these works more opportunities to reach more audiences. Here is a rundown: FDCP’s Pelikulaya LGBTQIA+ Film Festival The Film Development Council of the Philippines brings back the Pelikulaya LGBTQIA+ Film Festival this year with the theme “Mga Kuwentong Mapagpalaya” (Liberating Stories), and the aim is training the spotlight “on underrepresented members of the LGBTQIA+ community to promote a better understanding of inclusivity, diversity and equality.” According to Tirso Cruz III, FDCP chairman and chief executive officer, Pelikulaya “aims to raise awareness of LGBTQIA+ issues. We believe that by using the power of film, we can do our part in showcasing films that celebrate LGBTQIA+ stories. Hoping to create understanding of the lives, perspectives and advocacies shown in each film.” “With that, the FDCP sends our love and gratitude to you all for being with us, and we hope you’ll have a memorable experience in all of our Cinematheque Centres across the Philippines,” he added. To be held from 23 to 30 June, Pelikulaya will screen titles at the Cinematheque Centres in Manila, Davao, Iloilo, Nabunturan and Bacolod, and several theaters in Metro Manila including Cinema ‘76 and UP Film Institute’s Cine Adarna/Videotheque. Some of the titles will also be available for streaming on JuanFlix (www.juanflix.com.ph) starting 30 June with a subscription fee. A special screening of a digitally restored and remastered version of Wong Kar Wai’s Happy Together will kick off the festival on 23 June at the Shangri-La Plaza Mall in Mandaluyong City. Aside from Happy Together, films that will be screened at the Cinematheque Centres are Girl (directed by Lukas Dhont); Portrait of a Lady on Fire (directed by Celine Sciamma); Women Do Cry (directed by Vesela Kazako and Mina Mileva); Billie and Emma (directed by Samantha Lee); Mamu, and a Mother Too (directed by Rod Singh); Metamorphosis (directed by J.E. Tiglao); and The Boy Foretold by the Stars (directed by Dolly Dulu). Ishmael Bernal’s Manila by Night will have a free screening. Priced from P100 to P200, tickets to Manila screenings may be purchased through bit.ly/CCManilaTickets. [caption id="attachment_146567" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Lukas Dhont’s ‘Girl’ is inspired by a true story of a young trans girl who aspired to be a ballerina.[/caption] Short films will be screened for free at the Cinematheque Centres, and the lineup includes Alingasngas ng mga Kuliglig (directed by Vahn Leinard Pascual); Love in the Ungodly Hour (directed by Bradley Jason Pantajo); Dikit (directed by Gabriela Serrano); Gulis (directed by Kyle Jumayne Francisco); Noontime Drama (directed by Kim Timan and Sam Villa-Real); and Nang Maglublob ako sa Isang Mangkok ng Liwanag (directed by Kukay Zinampan). Aside from Happy Together, two films featuring transgender experiences will also be shown. My Alphabet Bucket List
There’s this cool improv game called ABC Soap, and it’s basically running a scene where the players ask for a long word prompt, then use the letters of that word to start the sentences of their scene with. This is a derivative of the original Alphabet Game, which uses the letter sequence of the alphabet to play a scene. I wanna make this piece fun by combining my topic of bucket list and the Alphabet Game. I’ll try to be as “improvisational” about it as I can, in the spirit of the game — so I won’t overthink, and also not over-explain, just write what’s top of mind and top of heart. Let’s see what comes up! A — Adventures, because life is a daring adventure or nothing, and I intend to be on the lookout for unusual and exciting things that appeal greatly to me and just go for it! B — Broadway, because I love theater, especially musical theater, and want to experience watching the best productions in the Great White Way. And Breakthroughs, which means growth! C — Coaching career that’s thriving, because it’s my spiritual career, and my social entrepreneurship vehicle of choice. D — Dogs, which everyone knows I love, and I intend to always have a couple of furbabies in my life. And Drum lessons, because I’m a self-taught drummer, and would love to get better at it. [caption id="attachment_134224" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF pexels/bluebird | I INTEND to have a couple of furbabies in my life.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_134224" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF pexels/bluebird | I INTEND to have a couple of furbabies in my life.[/caption] E — Event for top coaches and other helping professionals, a dream project that I will put together, hopefully sooner rather than later. F — Flower garden, because I love flowers, and I wanna have a flower garden in my terrace, or in a future bigger house with space for an honest-to-goodness garden. G — Go-with-the-flow, because this is my mantra of choice, and something I want to imbibe as a habit. H — Heartwarming stuff, like conversations, books, films, experiences, which I intend to fill my life with. I — Improv, which is my past-time of choice—both performing and watching, and I would like to develop an Applied Improv workshop for coaches. J — Jive dance, which suits my personality, and I want to learn it while I can still skip and bounce around as the dance requires. K — Keepsakes, which I wish to gift my dearest and closest with; the goal is to give them something I own and value that suits them to a tee. L — Lightworker, which is a mission I’m working on to embody. M — Mommy’s 80th birthday celebration this year, which is something I want to organize and surprise her with (so ssssshhh). N — Nature trips, because we have a gorgeous planet, in spite of everything, and there’s still so much I have to discover and feast my senses on the world over. O — Oracle card deck, because this is another dream project of mine, and I want to create an inspired deck for my coaching Signature Program. P — Podcast, also a dream project, and something a number of friends have suggested I do; what a treat it would be to have animated conversations with people I admire and immortalize these exchanges in a podcast. [caption id="attachment_134225" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF UNSPLASH/COTTONBRO | DOING podcasts is a dream project of mine.[/caption] Q — Queenlike, which is my chosen way of being, plus basically the heart of my signature Dating Queen Program. R — Retreat space, because I would love to have my own perfect place to hold coaching retreats and workshops in. S — Self-love and self-care, which need to be constant, because we are worth it, and love is our birthright. T — Team for my coaching practice, one that’s after my own heart. And True love, because #goals! U — Uplifting stuff, which includes my column, a second (maybe even a third) book when the time is right, and a dream foundation—all for sharing blessings and giving back. V — Vacations, because I will always be work-play balanced, and travelling rocks. W — Women’s Circle, yet another dream project, run by myself and other like-minded women trainers. X -- Xmas traditions, because Christmas is love, family, and all things warm and cheery, and it’s never too late to create new traditions. Y — Youthfulness, because age is just a number, and I intend to remain young at heart. Z — Zeitgeist-inspired coaching practice, because I aim to always meet real needs that bring forth timely transformations. So this is how the rest of my life will look like if it were up to me. And no, it doesn’t have to happen in alphabetical order. Care to make your own Alphabet Bucket List? The post My Alphabet Bucket List appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
