PEZA cheers signing of PH-FTA deal as investment approvals increase 180% in September
Pasay City – Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Director General Tereso O. Panga said on Thursday that it is optimistic to receive more investors from South Korea with the signing of the Philippines-South Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on the sidelines of the 43rd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits in Jakarta, Indonesia. According to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., “The signing of the FTA is a testament to the realization of many opportunities for complementation and collaboration between the Philippines and South Korea, and an even greater milestone for our economic friendship.” Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual also noted that “for the Philippines, this FTA serves as a clear demonstration of the intent to elevate the current bilateral relations with South Korea to a stronger strategic partnership. The Philippines’ engagement with South Korea is built on trade through market access, economic cooperation, and investments through collaboration in targeted sectors such as critical minerals and supply chains.” Echoing these, Panga stated that “With South Korea’s status as the 10th largest GDP in the world and 2nd most technologically advanced nation (next to Germany), the Philippines stands to benefit from this FTA which opens more opportunities for investors, increased market access, FDI inflows, higher value-added production and export diversification combined with deeper economic cooperation and innovation partnership.” PEZA is also seeing an influx of FDIs coming from South Korea for the year. Panga said, “We are seeing an increasing trend with more South Korean investments coming in the country. Last year, we have approved a total of Php 1.019 Billion investments from South Korean projects and for our performance this year, we already generated a total of Php 1.413 Billion investments from South Korea. We are looking forward to welcoming more investments from them, especially from industries unique to the country.” As of June 2023, PEZA has a total of 246 registered projects from South Korea which generate Php 92.190 Billion investments, US$ 736.454 Million exports, and 40,688 employments. Phl, US & Japan leaders had ‘informal meeting’ at ASEAN
JAKARTA, Indonesia – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan said that the leaders of the Philippines, Japan, and the United States have decided to work together to resolve and improve the status quo in the South China Sea. In a statement from Japan's foreign ministry released on Thursday, the three foreign leaders had an "informal meeting" at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) 2023 gala dinner on Wednesday night. For context, Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel "Babe" Romualdez said on Tuesday that the United States, Japan, and the Philippines were supposed to have a trilateral meeting to discuss several areas of concern. But the White House said on Wednesday evening that Marcos and Harris had a separate bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 43rd ASEAN Summits. "Prime Minister Kishida, President Marcos and Vice President Harris confirmed that the three countries would continue to promote the further strengthening of coordination among Japan, the U.S., and the Philippines in various ways," it added. *Australia on SCS issue* Meanwhile, Marcos Jr. thanked Australia for supporting the stance of the Philippines in the South China Sea. “I welcome Australia’s active engagement in maritime-related issues and concerns in the region,” Marcos said during his intervention at the 3rd ASEAN-Australia Summit here. “And we, the Philippines, thank Australia for expressing concern on the latest actions directed against the Philippines in the South China Sea. Malaysia is a merry mix of Muslims, Indians, Chinese and Christians whose vibrant culture and traditions vitalize its calendar with a variety of celebrations and festivals that, in themselves, give every reason to visit the country. In every celebration, the tradition of holding an “open house” or “welcome all” provides the opportunity for the various races to visit each other to enliven the celebration. Muslim For Muslims, the two major festivals are celebrated namely Hari Raya Puasa (Aidilfitri) and Hari Raya Haji (Aidiladha). Hari Raya Puasa marks the end of Ramadan, which requires Muslims to fast for a month. Hari Raya Haji is celebrated on the 10th day of Zulhijjah (the month of Islam) when Muslims perform the Haj in Mecca and are in the final stages of their worship. In conjunction with the festival, Muslims who are capable are encouraged to perform sacrificial worship (ibadah korban) and, due to this, it is also known as Hari Raya Korban. Other than the two major festivals, Muslims also celebrate Maal Hijrah (Awal Muharam), which is a celebration of the Islamic New Year; Maulidur Rasul to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW, and Nuzul Quran to commemorate the day of the revelation of the al-Quran among Muslims. Chinese Chinese Malaysian communities celebrate Chinese New Year on the first day of the Chinese calendar in January or February each year. The festival starts with the whole family gathering for dinner. The celebration lasts for 15 days to the day of “Chap Goh Meh”, which is celebrated on the night of the 15th day of the festival. The festival gesture or goodwill package “angpow” is a tradition that enlivens the atmosphere of Chinese New Year, especially for the children. For the majority of Chinese who are Buddhist, the month of May every year marks the arrival of Wesak Day to commemorate three important events in Buddha’s life: the day of birth, the day of the achievement of maturity of thoughts and the day of death. During the celebration, ceremonies and parades are normally held with prayers. In addition, there are other celebrations, such as the mid-autumn lantern celebration (Tanglung), Month of the Ghost Festival and Qing Ming. Indian For Hindu devotees, Deepavali, or the Festival of Lights, during the month of “Aippasi,” according to the Tamil calendar (October to November) is a time to rejoice. It marks the victory, brightness overcoming darkness, goodness overcoming evil, and wisdom over ignorance. The festival begins with prayers, followed by visiting of relatives and friends. In the evening, the house will be decorated with lights to enliven the festive atmosphere. Hindu devotees also celebrate Thaipusam in January as a sign of respect to the God Muruga. During the festival, Batu Caves in Selangor will be the focus of Hindu devotees carrying presentations above the “kavadi” to be presented to the gods. In addition, Hindus also celebrate Ponggal, Hindu New Year, Navarathiri and Kharthigai. Other festivals On 25 December each year, Christians celebrate Christmas, which marks the birth of Jesus with prayers in churches and visits to their relatives and friends. In Sabah and Sarawak, there are also the traditional ethnic festivals. In Sabah, in the month of May every year, the Kadazans will celebrate the Harvest Festival (Tadau Kaamatan), an important event to the farmer groups. Tamu Besar or Pasar Tahunan is a carnival created to organize traditional sports events. For the Dayaks, Ibans and Bidayuh in Sarawak, 1 June every year is a day to be awaited because, on that day, they will celebrate Hari Gawai. For the Dayaks, they will have specific celebrations consisting of Gawai Batu (beginning of the paddy planting season), Gawai Burung (celebration associated with a bad sign or nightmare), Gawai Bersimpan (thanksgiving upon completion of harvesting), Gawai Antu (celebration for the souls of the dead) and Gawai Kenyalang. Apart from the different races and festivals, Malaysians also celebrate Labor Day on 1 May, National Day or Independence Day on 31 August, Birthday of His Majesty Yang Di-Pertuan Agong on the Saturday of the first week of June, Birthday of the King/Sultan at state level and Good Friday for various states. Gov’t seeks Indon capital
Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno presented to Indonesia’s business community the Philippine economic plans for securing investments in infrastructure, energy and technology. In a statement by the Department of Finance on Thursday, it said Diokno conducted the talk in Jakarta City on Wednesday ahead of the 10th ASEAN Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ Meeting from 24 to 25 August. The listeners included members of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Philippine Business Club Indonesia, and officials of foreign embassies in Jakarta. Diokno said the Philippine lawmakers are now studying all measures for faster public-private partnerships or PPPs as the Marcos administration aims to build 197 infrastructure flagship projects, including railways, airports and water management, among others. PPP crucial “The PPP Act, which is currently pending in the Senate, consolidates all legal frameworks on PPP and creates a unified system for investors to refer to when engaging in PPP projects,” DoF said. To build more capital for Philippine infrastructure development and diversify investment channels, Diokno said government agencies are now crafting the rules and regulations of the Maharlika Investment Fund. “This is the Philippines’ first sovereign investment fund that will serve as a platform for investors to engage in direct equity investments in Philippine ventures,” he said. Diokno said both the legislative proposal and newly approved sovereign fund will support economic expansion from liberalized investment laws passed by the previous Duterte administration. Diokno shared amendments to the Public Service Act which now allows full foreign ownership from 40 percent previously of various businesses, such as airlines and telecommunications. Amid growing concerns with climate change, the finance chief said this applies also to renewable energy facilities, such as solar plants. Indonesia, along with China and India, is among the world’s largest exporter of coal, according to the International Energy Agency. However, Indonesia vowed to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2060, while it is 2050 for the Philippines. To ensure efficient management and profitability of infrastructure, Diokno said the government also eased processes for foreign investors under the Build-Operate-Transfer Law. “To help foster the development of high quality, modern, and sustainable infrastructure in the country, we wasted no time in building a fertile business and investment ecosystem for private players,” Diokno said. Chinese FM begins SE Asia tour as South China Sea tensions flare
China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Singapore Thursday at the start of a three-nation regional tour, Beijing's embassy in the city-state said, as tensions flare with the Philippines in the South China Sea. His three-day trip, after returning to the post last month following the unexplained disappearance of predecessor Qin Gang, also includes Malaysia and Cambodia. A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy confirmed to AFP on Thursday morning that Beijing's top diplomat had arrived in the financial hub. "China hopes to strengthen strategic communication with the three Southeast Asian countries through this visit," China's foreign ministry said when it announced the trip on Wednesday. Wang will visit until Friday and hold separate meetings with his counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Singapore's government said. His visit comes after Beijing and Manila clashed at the weekend when the Philippines accused Chinese Coast Guard vessels of blocking and firing water cannon at its boats on a resupply mission to Filipino marines stationed on a World-War-II-era ship. China has since insisted the Philippine navy vessel grounded on a reef in the Spratly Islands be removed from the hotly contested waters that have long been a flashpoint between the two. Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia and the Philippines are all members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which is in talks with China over a code of conduct in the sea that Beijing claims as almost entirely its own. Other ASEAN members Vietnam, Indonesia and Brunei all claim parts of the sea, too. Singapore has for decades juggled ties with China and the US as their rivalry grows across the Asia-Pacific region. Wang will travel to Malaysia on Friday where Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he will meet with Beijing's envoy in the northern state of Penang, Malaysia's Star newspaper reported. Anwar is on the campaign trail ahead of local elections on Saturday in six states. Wang will finish his trip in Cambodia, which has become one of China's strongest allies in the region under the rule of outgoing ruler Hun Sen, receiving huge sums of Chinese investment. mba/jfx/aha © Agence France-Presse The post Chinese FM begins SE Asia tour as South China Sea tensions flare appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

PBBM visit to Vietnam slated Jan.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to visit Vietnam in January 2024 — his 12th international trip since he assumed the presidency mid last year. Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo, currently on a four-day official visit to Vietnam, announced this in his speech in Hanoi at the 10th Philippines-Vietnam Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation. “President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. recently finished his first year in office and we have seen a remarkable display of trust and confidence between our two countries. We welcome the President’s recent sideline meetings with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in the last two Asean summits,” Manalo said. “We also look forward to President Marcos’ state visit to Vietnam in January next year, where he and President Vo Van Thuong could meet to discuss how to raise our bilateral ties to even greater heights,” he added. The announcement came barely a week after Marcos went on a three-day state visit to Malaysia, a day after he delivered his second State of the Nation Address. According to the Presidential Communications Office, the President’s visit to Malaysia yielded up to $285 million worth of investment pledges. Areas of cooperation Manalo said the Philippine government is looking forward to discussing important areas of cooperation with Vietnam, particularly maritime, trade, and investment promotion, people-to-people exchanges, and cooperation in ASEAN and other multilateral fora. “I am also looking forward to exchanging views with you on pertinent regional and international issues, mainly on how we can promote peace and stability in the region and the greater international arena,” he said. On Tuesday, the DFA chief expressed the country’s intent to forge stronger maritime cooperation with Vietnam in the South China Sea, where both countries are claimant states. “Our geographies and status as major littoral and claimant states in the South China Sea make maritime cooperation a vital point of interaction between our two countries, as economic and security partners. As in centuries prior, this body of water connects our peoples, despite some differences,” Manalo said. “Beyond its strategic significance, the South China Sea is the lifeblood of millions of Filipinos and Vietnamese people who depend on the sea for their livelihood,” he added. He continued: “As maritime nations at the heart of this seascape, it is a given that we consider safe and secure seas and sound marine ecosystems as integral to the future of our peoples and our region.” Like the Philippines, Vietnam has overlapping claims with China over the Paracel and Spratly Islands, which remain the main point of contention between the two countries. Malaysian firms eye $285-M investments in Phl
On Thursday, 27 July 2023, President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. together with Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Fred Pascual, attended a series of meetings with Malaysian businesses, which forms part of the President's State Visit to Malaysia. The Philippines and Malaysia have a longstanding bilateral relationship and have been trade and business partners for years. In 2022, Malaysia was the Philippines' 10th major trading partner and 11th export market. FDI net inflows from Malaysia in 2022 showed a massive increase of 505 percent as compared to the total investment value in 2021. This reflected a 17.8 percent share of the total Foreign Direct Investment inflows from ASEAN and one of the Philippines' major source of approved foreign investments in the region. During the one-on-one business meetings, five Malaysian companies signed Letters of Intent, a testament to the increasing trust and confidence of foreign companies toward the Philippines' improved business environment, which was boosted by the recent economic policy reforms of the Marcos Jr. administration. One of the five companies is Malaysian dairy company Farm Fresh Berhad, which expressed its interest to expand in the Philippines through cattle breeding intended for milk production. This investment costs $20 million and is set to commence its operations by 2028 with an estimated employment of 200 local workers. Further, the company has an ongoing construction of a 6,000 sqm dairy processing facility in Pampanga and a lease of 200 to 400 hectares of contiguous farmland intended for raising 2,000 milking cows. "We are optimistic that these signed LOIs will materialize in the coming months. It is important to understand, however, that investments are typically long-term commitments rather than immediate action. These often require careful study, planning and legal processes before they can materialize. We at the DTI remain committed to assisting them in pursuing their investment plans," said Pascual. "These investments are related to food processing, multi-service digital platforms, aviation, aviation maintenance support service, logistics, manufacturing, infrastructure, and water and wastewater treatment. We expect that these will greatly contribute to our pursuit of economic recovery and expansion in the form of 8,365 estimated jobs to be created," he added. The trade and industry chief also joined the roundtable meeting with members of the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce and the CEOs of the companies who recently signed LOIs. During the RTM, he conveyed appreciation toward Malaysian businesses for its sustained interest and confidence in the Philippines and informed them of the investment opportunities available in the Philippines for them to take advantage of. "With strong partnerships, I see many opportunities for Malaysia and the Philippines to further strengthen our ties in trade and investment. This roundtable meeting is a significant platform to guide our partnership going forward," said Pascual. Overall, the President's three-day state visit to Malaysia was able to generate a total of $285 million investment pledges from Malaysian businesses. Also present during the RTM were Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Charles C. Jose, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo, Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno, Senator Mark Villar, DOE Undersecretary Felix Fuentebella, DTI Assistant Secretary Glenn Peñaranda and representatives from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
