Cat cafe brings pawsitivity to war-scarred Gaza
A cat cafe in the Gaza Strip aims to "cheer up" Palestinian residents and offer them a respite from the trials of daily life in the blockaded territory, its owner said. At the Meow Cat Cafe which opened this week in Gaza City, owner Nehma Maabad set out food for a clowder of kittens. "Cats, for me, are a refuge that relieves me of psychological stress. So I thought of creating a project that combines serving people with something to cheer them up," said the 50-year-old. Part of the space is kitted out with wooden platforms covered in astroturf for the cats to clamber onto, while feline murals and portraits adorn the walls. Meow is part of a growing global trend of cat cafes, but the circumstances in Gaza are unique. The territory has been under a crippling Israeli blockade since 2007 and scars of repeated wars fought between Palestinian militants and Israel are visible across the city. Customers pay nearly 10 shekels ($2.65) per hour to play with the cats, which Maabad said covers their food as well as costly vet bills. Visiting the cafe, Manar Abu Samra said it was reasonably priced and she had told her friends and sisters about the new venture. "The quality of cats here is beautiful and sweet, so it's a wonderful idea -- despite its strangeness to society -- and when I heard about it I felt happy," she said. Pets are rare in Gaza although cats are ever-present, particularly around the port or fishmongers as they try to paw away some scraps. Maabad said she had cats at home to bring to Meow, while others came from friends. "The idea of the cafe was to have something nice with a cup of coffee," she said. "A cat that you play with and it makes you smile and forget the pressures of life." The post Cat cafe brings pawsitivity to war-scarred Gaza appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Newest Foodie paradise Down South.
Food brings people together, but it is the discovery of decadent, sinful and mouthwatering dishes that really brings people more joy and satisfaction. The opening of Mercato Centrale at the Festival Mall Alabang allows food lovers to discover new favorites and savor a wide selection of treats from budding food entrepreneurs — from crispy bagnet and Vigan-style empanadas to takoyaki balls and tender, juicy steaks. This newest foodie’s paradise in the south will run until 31 December. “Filinvest’s Festival Mall has always been very strong in supporting the growth of both businesses and communities. That’s why we are very happy to work with them,” said RJ Ledesma, co-founder of Mercato Centrale, the pioneer in outdoor food lifestyle market that was established in 2010. “We feel that the environment in Festival Mall is an ideal opportunity for us to continue our advocacy in supporting micro and small food enterprises.” [caption id="attachment_162735" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] Solid partnership (From left) Vanessa Ledesma, Mercato Centrale president; RJ Ledesma, Mercato Centrale co-founder; Mitch Dumlao, Filinvest Supermall Inc. first vice president and business unit head; and Denise Rae Lagayan, Filinvest Supermall Inc. senior assistant vice president. | Photograph by Vangie Baga Reyes for the Daily Tribune.[/caption] “On our end, we are always on the lookout for new, exciting concepts that the Mercato Centrale brings,” shared Mitch Dumlao, first vice president and business unit head of Filinvest Supermall Inc. “They are one of those key components that the mall should have and, in this kind of concept, it really brings together many people and introduce new cuisines. In fact, some of the food that they are bringing in are very local that many people from the south do not know about. It’s like a whole new dining experience for our customers.” The 15 to 20 food booths offering varied cuisines (Korean, Japanese, Indian, Middle Eastern) are strategically set up at the mall’s Water Garden Park to keep diners close to nature and breathe in fresh air while enjoying their food. Once in a while, there will be performances and fireworks to entertain diners. [caption id="attachment_162738" align="aligncenter" width="1920"] Popular Korean snacks.[/caption] “It is also experiential,” explained Ledesma. “Aside from food, we have buskers to pump up the atmosphere. There will also be regular theme events, such as cultural celebration or special barbecue night or healthy food week, so that every time you visit us there’s always a different experience with food.” He added: “It is a time for revenge spending for everybody now. People spend their money in food, travel and shopping. What we want to leverage right now is that so many entrepreneurs were created during the pandemic. We are here to give them a venue and build a platform for them to showcase their products. There is an opportunity to grow as well.” Among the featured vendors are Royal Tea Shots (coffee, milk tea and fruit tea), Mamays Ihaw (grilled dishes), City of Drinks (fruit juices), Manang Joy Empanada (hot empanadas), Bagnet Patong (rice meals), Unkle Kimz and Grub Streat (Korean food), Steak Garrage (steaks), Grid Ion (shawarma and sausage) and Supreme Hungarian (sausages). There are also nonfood items available. ‘Crazy’ good: star chef Ana Ros puts Slovenia on food map
When Ana Ros started as a chef in Slovenia, all she had were some cookbooks and a bit of a "crazy" personality, as she herself puts it. Now the self-taught cook -- who was named the world's best woman chef in 2017 -- has her two Michelin stars tattooed on her fingers and is helping make her small Alpine homeland one of Europe's prime gastronomic destinations. Ros quickly found she had a talent for "matching crazy flavours", like coffee pasta with sea bass, lemon foam and basil, one of the early dishes that helped make her name. "Like a painter sees colours, the chef sees flavours, and I was always very well known for using very strong flavour combinations," the 50-year-old told AFP at her restaurant in the Soca Valley close to the border with Italy. Hisa Franko -- which Ros has been running for the last 20 years -- currently ranks 32nd in the World's 50 Best Restaurants list. But it is not the only restaurant of note in the country sandwiched between Italy, Austria and Croatia. The Michelin guide recommends 58 there, saying Slovenia "is asserting itself as a gastronomic destination whose potential and quality are constantly improving." Cooking from scratch And a large part of that is down to innovative chefs like Ros, who has also been featured in Netflix's "Chef's Table" series. Hisa Franko was a family inn serving traditional fare when Ros's partner at the time, Valter Kramer, took it over from his parents in 2002. Ros decided to join her husband in the restaurant, following her heart rather than pursuing her ambitions to pursue a diplomatic career in Brussels. "At the beginning, it was just like cooking for survival... I started cooking from scratch," said the chef. Right from the start, Ros developed a particular way of making "flavours hit your mind". "Because my food is all about my character. A bit crazy... still childish" to some extent, she said. Ros said her food is a combination of understanding the regional traditions and seasonality, but also her own personality. After years of hard work, news about the remote restaurant with a talented woman chef started spreading, and Ros is now regarded as one of the world's best in a field still dominated by men. "Sometimes you look like an exotic animal," she said. "But of course, the picture is changing with the new generation, who are super talented and super ambitious." Hisa Franko now has a team of 40 people from around 20 countries working in her kitchen and she plans to open a bistro in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana. The day she talked to AFP, her kitchen was turning out a starter of deer heart, oyster, kiwi and beetroot with mountain greens. Like a big family The country's cuisine "is one of a kind" and deserves a place on the culinary map, according to Lior Kochavy, a founder of a weekly street food festival in the capital that also brings together leading restaurants. "You will never be bored. There is all the time something new to try," he said. With Slovenia a melting pot of Latin, Slavic and Germanic influences, other chefs also say they attract diners by honouring traditions, seasonality and sourcing food locally. "We've always tried to make sure the distance between the field and the plate is as short as possible," said Tomaz Kavcic, who runs the one-star Michelin Gostilna pri Lojzetu (Lojze's Inn). "In the past that might not have been appreciated much, but now it is very valued," he told AFP. His menu "writes itself with just the products we see" from the restaurant's terrace on a vineyard-covered hill. Ros, too, said Slovenians have "always been using nature as their market". "Farmers and foragers -- you grow with them, you learn from them, you teach them. It's kind of like a big family," she said. Winning my 46th book project in 25 years with MIESCOR 50th anniversary book
Exactly a week ago on 15 June, I had a contract signing with Meralco Industrial Engineering Services Corporation to produce its 50th anniversary coffee table book. It was such a delight and honor to meet with its top executives and the editorial book committee to record the book signing event. This book project negotiation was started mid-November 2022 when I received a call from MIESCOR’s procurement department to inquire if I was interested to produce its 50th anniversary book. Of course, I said “YES” and finally after six months of discussions, we arrived at a win-win solution to all the many details that needed to be addressed. Creating the book content for my many books has always been such a journey of discoveries and education for me. Going through the gamut of all the stages of production, from the many interviews and photoshoots to discussions with my great book team on the concepts of the cover and styling, produces such a “high” that enables us to capture the spirit and the message of each book. [caption id="attachment_148137" align="aligncenter" width="599"] PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF BING CARRION | MIESCOR contract signing for the company’s 50th-anniversary coffee table book.[/caption] Each of my books varies from design to content as the materials we gather dictate the outcome of the book’s narrative. However, every time I submit a complete book proposal to a client, that particular book project is done in my head. Only the execution of the details for all the pages remains to be done. Why do I do what I do best — that is capturing the milestone moments and defining stories of each of my book projects? It is because we can never underestimate the power of the written word. Long after we are gone from this earth, the books I produce create legacies of the wonderful journey of each of my subjects that are forever etched in the annals of Philippine history, life and culture. My books become the stories of generations of Filipino families, international and domestic corporations, NGOs and distinguished Asian leaders. The honor that each of my collectible coffee table books, found in select libraries around the world, accords to my many featured subjects that become part of the annals of Philippine history. As generations pass, these legacies of dreams, of character, of education, of honor are the forces that build kinship, binds our culture together, drive our people to new and challenging heights, thus creating a vibrant, a driven and innovative society with a conscience. The pages of my books always endeavor to capture the legacies that bring light, color, joy, honor and glory to each of my subjects. Their narratives become sources of deep inspiration, commitment, learning and abiding faith that produces life-defining changes and the anchor that brings meaning and direction to our lives. I shall always endeavor to write strong narratives that inspire the readers to become the best versions of themselves. This is the main reason that I write. I wake up each morning with deep joy and a grateful heart in thanksgiving to God Almighty who inspires me to do the books that uplifts the human spirit which creates a kinder, happier and wonderful world for us all. Belmont Hotel Mactan: A home away from home
For many, a hotel is synonymous to comfort and relaxation, offering people luxurious amenities for a memorable and hassle-free stay. For Belmont Hotel Mactan, these experiences are taken to the next level as it extends incomparable services and first-rate amenities that not only embody class and elegance but also add convenience into the total hotel experience. Belmont Hotel Mactan in Lapu-Lapu City, Mactan Cebu, is the third hotel to open under Megaworld Hotels and Resorts’ homegrown hotel chain in the country. Under its business and leisure or “bleisure” label, Belmont Hotel Mactan is also the second hotel (after Savoy Hotel) that sits on the 30-hectare The Mactan Newtown township. Yes, Megaworld’s townships have always been known as a city within a city that amazingly brings everything together — upscale condominiums, lifestyle malls, commercial establishments, office towers, banks, learning institutions and more — in one mixed-used development. That’s why Belmont Hotel Mactan guests in The Mactan Newtown, particularly the business travelers, are assured of this rare convenience because almost everything they need while staying at the hotel is within their reach. “Guests surely find it efficient to stay within the heart of a 30-hectare lifestyle and business hub of the township,” says Johnson Del Valle, Belmont Hotel Mactan general manager. [caption id="attachment_145632" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PHOTOGRAPH BY VANGIE BAGA-REYES | JOHNSON del Valle (left) Belmont Hotel Mactan general manager, and Harold Geronimo, Megaworld’s vice president for public relations and media affairs.[/caption] Home away from home The 20-story hotel is poised as a business travelers’ home away from home while staying in the beguiling island of Mactan. Located along Newtown Boulevard and just beside Savoy Hotel Mactan, Belmont Hotel Mactan features 550 guestrooms and suites with three room categories, namely, Junior Suite (50 sqm), Deluxe Premium (36 sqm) and Superior (26 sqm). It also has seven rooms dedicated for guests with special needs. [caption id="attachment_145629" align="aligncenter" width="525"] DELUXE Premier[/caption] All rooms are fully equipped with essential amenities, such as an in-room electronic safety box, wall-mounted TV, tea and coffee-making facilities, a minibar and wireless Internet connection. [caption id="attachment_145630" align="aligncenter" width="525"] BELMONT Café, the hotel’s all-day dining outlet offering Asian and Mediterranean dishes.[/caption] Interestingly, most units feature expansive views of the Magellan Bay and the Hilutungan Channel, a deep-water channel that separates Mactan Island from Olango Island. With regards to its location, guests arriving via Cebu International Airport will only take at least 15 minutes to reach the hotel. Del Valle says Belmont provides a logical choice for guests with a business mindset. “Since we opened, we host mainly guests who visit the area for business,” he shares. “The hotel features facilities built specifically for MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions), team-building, networking and corporate celebrations across our four available function rooms that can accommodate a maximum of capacity 120 guests down to 30 guests.” These function spaces are equipped with smart-control projectors and sound systems. “The Mactan Island is populated by hotels and resorts focusing heavily on leisure and wellness, so we are very excited to bring a new kind of hospitality experience through Belmont Hotel Mactan,” says Cleofe Albiso, managing director of Megaworld Hotels and Resorts. “Just like the first two Belmont Hotel properties in Newport City in Pasay and Boracay Newcoast in Aklan, Belmont Hotel Mactan will host guests who are in the area for both business and leisure.” She adds: “They can expect the usual topnotch amenities that enable rest and relaxation, but because we want to address the need for Mactan to be MICE-ready we have also built here facilities for business events. Coupled with the Megaworld brand of hospitality, we are very proud to say this kind of experience is something that cannot be found anywhere else on this side of Cebu.” Rich history Stepping inside the lobby, Belmont Hotel becomes a tribute to Cebu’s festive culture, landmarks, marine life, rich history as showcased through numerous art installations. For instance, colorful headdresses used in Cebu’s Sinulog are displayed in the walls of its all-day dining outlet, Belmont Café; Cebu’s finest handcrafted guitars in different sizes and colors are mounted in the chic hangout spot, Zabana Bar; and the room’s wall art paper features popular things Cebu is known for, from guitars to its delicacies, such as otap and puso (rice wrapped and boiled in woven coconut leaves). To relax and unwind, the central amenity area on the third floor has the swimming pool and kiddie pool, female and male wet and dry sauna, outdoor lounge with elevated deck, fitness center and viewing deck where guests can marvel at the beauty of the nearby sea and the rest of the township and the Mactan Island. In terms of food outlets, guests can also savor a variety of cuisines and delicacies from the hotel’s three food and beverage outlets. Belmont Café offers a wide variety of Asian and Mediterranean dishes, as well as other local delicacies. Just a few steps away from Belmont Café is the Zabana Bar, where guests can enjoy a selection of cocktails and refreshing beverages. [caption id="attachment_145635" align="aligncenter" width="525"] FITNESS center.[/caption] Over on the third floor is the Float Pool Bar, where guests can sample a variety of snacks and beverages as they lounge and take a refreshing plunge at the swimming pool. Belmont Hotel is just a few minutes’ walk from the Mactan Newtown Beach, and about five-minute walk away from the Mactan Alfresco, a hawker-type dining destination. “While in the area, don’t forget to visit the notable tourist sites much like the Mactan Shrine where the iconic 20-meter statue of Lapu-Lapu stands or the Sto. Nino de Cebu Mactan Parish Church which is noted to be shaped like the Magellan’s hat,” shares Del Valle. Largest hotel operator With the opening of Belmont Hotel, alongside Savoy Hotel, Megaworld Hotels and Resorts now has a combined room keys of 1,100, the largest number of room keys in the entire Mactan Island. At the same time, it makes Megaworld the largest developer and operator in the entire Cebu province today. “Belmont means Beautiful Mountain in French,” says Harold Geronimo, Megaworld’s vice president for public relations and media affairs. “It was a name created by our chairman Dr. Andrew L. Tan when we launched the first Belmont Hotel in Newport City. He fell in love with the name. He just wanted to create a new brand for Megaworld Hotels and Resorts because the first brand that we introduced was Richmonde Hotel. The second brand was Belmont.” The first Belmont Hotel was opened in 2015 at Newport City in Pasay City. It was followed by Belmont Hotel Boracay. Soon, the fourth Belmont Hotel will open in Iloilo City. Geronimo adds that Belmont Hotel will complement the Savoy Hotel inside the township because the vision of Megaworld is to be able to expand its portfolio of hotels in Mactan Island. They want to cater to more business and leisure travelers. “When we open Savoy Hotel, we notice there has been a high demand for those types of travelers who want to do business meetings here, as well as families and tourists who are on vacation in Mactan Island. We want to cater to both that’s why we are adding more rooms.” Belmont Hotel is still in the process of coordinating with the Department of Tourism for the hotel-star rating.
