Pretty in pink: ‘Barbie’ marketing blitz hits fever pitch
Hollywood A-listers have been walking red carpets in hot pink, glitter is back, and companies from The Gap to Burger King are doing rose-colored collaborations: "Barbie" mania is everywhere as the hotly anticipated film hits theaters worldwide. Toy maker Mattel, who first unveiled the iconic doll in 1959, has reached about 100 licensing agreements for everything from roller skates to toothbrushes in connection to director Greta Gerwig's summer flick. Of course, Barbie is big in the beauty world too -- lipsticks, blushes and mirrors all bear the famous logo. "In the 30 years that I have been tracking and analyzing box offices and trends, I've never quite seen anything like this before," said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore. "Barbie is tailor-made for marketing," he said. "It's perfect because Barbie is a toy, it's already a product, and beyond that, it's a lifestyle and a color." The movie, which stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as boyfriend Ken, has been hyped as one of the biggest blockbusters of the season, with numerous premieres held around the globe ahead of Friday's debut in US theaters. Of course, that promotion blitz has been curtailed at the 11th hour, with Hollywood actors now on strike over pay and other conditions. But the list of corporate partners is sure to keep the buzz going. Microsoft, Forever 21, Ulta Beauty, Hot Wheels, Chevrolet and even Progressive insurance are among the companies looking to cash in on Barbie mania. The influential color company Pantone even has a shade to match the zeitgeist: 219C is officially Barbie Pink. Mattel has even reached a deal with rival toy giant Hasbro, which will release a Barbie version of the classic board game Monopoly in the fall. In exchange, Mattel will showcase "Transformers" on its Uno card game in connection with a Hasbro film release. 'Irresistible' Robbie has embraced Barbiecore fashion at premieres around the world, recreating some of the doll's most iconic looks, but the Barbie lifestyle trend is also full steam ahead Airbnb is offering up a stay at Barbie's "Malibu DreamHouse" for two nights in connection with the film's debut. "Placed perfectly above the beach with panoramic views, this life-size toy pink mansion is a dream come true!" reads the listing. Singer John Legend and his model wife Chrissy Teigen took the plunge, posting a series of pictures on Instagram of their stay at the hot pink property. The most ubiquitous shade of pink used on the Warner Bros film's set, a retro bubblegum hue made by Rosco, was used in such great quantities that the shoot has been blamed for a global shortage. "It's just become a very irresistible proposition," said Dergarabedian, crediting both Warner Bros and Mattel with ensuring the buzz had staying power. Dergarabedian expects a strong opening weekend for Barbie, with around $75 million in North American ticket sales. 'Barbenheimer' The film is opening in parallel with another big Hollywood entry, the Christopher Nolan-directed "Oppenheimer," a biopic about the father of the atomic bomb. The unlikely face-off between the dark historical thriller and a fuchsia-tinted romp about a doll has created online buzz about a phenomenon dubbed "Barbenheimer." Dergarabedian said the coincidental timing of the openings had contributed to "unprecedented" fodder about the films on social media and beyond. Both movies are opening on the heels of another big-screen blockbuster, "Mission: Impossible -- Dead Reckoning Part One," which led the domestic box office last weekend. A starry soundtrack includes tracks from Dua Lipa (who also appears in the film), Lizzo, and Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, who recorded a cover of "Barbie Girl," a 1997 hit by Danish-Norwegian band Aqua. The original recording actually prompted a lengthy but unsuccessful trademark lawsuit by Mattel. The company subsequently embraced the song. The movie's arrival has also not been without controversy. Barbie has been banned in Vietnam over a scene with a fictitious world map criticized for allegedly showing China's claims in the disputed South China Sea. The Philippines allowed the film to be shown -- but asked that the map be blurred. The post Pretty in pink: ‘Barbie’ marketing blitz hits fever pitch appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Invest blitz spurs Canadian interest
Major Canadian fund managers have expressed interest in investing in the country’s infrastructure, investments in sustainability and energy transition and sovereign debt issues. The Department of Finance, or DoF, said select funds, including development finance institution FinDev Canada; pension funds Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, OPTrust, Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System, and Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan are exploring opportunities in the country. Investment management companies Black Creek and Vanguard also expressed keen interest in the Philippines’ public-private partnership. Canada roadshow Economic managers successfully brought their US-Canada non-deal roadshow to a close on 14 July. Composed of a series of roundtable meetings in New York and Toronto, the non-deal roadshow served as an opportunity for investors to learn more about the Philippines’ growth outlook, economic and fiscal policy environment, investment opportunities, and growth engines in the medium and long term. “The Philippines has a very interesting story to tell. The meetings we had in New York and Toronto gave us the opportunity to share with current and potential investors the country’s robust growth outlook and the engines that will drive this growth, such as the recently reopened mining industry, the rebound of tourism, and the ambitious ‘Build, Better, More’ program,” Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno said. Powerhouse cast Diokno, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Eli Remolona Jr., National Economic and Development Authority Secretary Arsenio Balisacan, Department of Budget and Management Secretary Amenah Pangandaman, and Treasurer of the Philippines Rosalia de Leon led in-depth discussions on the country’s priority high-growth sectors. Presented before the forum were the reopening of the mining industry, tourism, manufacturing, the growth of business process outsourcing, renewable energy and green investments, environmental, social and governance issuances, overall growth outlook, and the Maharlika Investment Fund. The economic team met with a mix of fixed-income and infrastructure funds, institutional investors, development finance institutions, mining companies and asset management companies. Closing the roadshow activities, Diokno and Pangandaman led the market close ceremony at the Toronto Stock Exchange, the largest exchange in Canada, on 14 July. During a meeting before the market close, TSX head of government affairs David Clarke presented opportunities to deepen capital in mining, a major industry in Canada, in the Philippines and talked about the huge presence of TSX-listed companies with mining activities in Asia and the Philippines. The non-deal roadshow was organized and supported by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas-Investor Relations Group, DoF, BofA Securities, Canada-ASEAN Business Council, Global Affairs Canada, Citi, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Morgan Stanley, Philippine Embassy in Canada, Standard Chartered Bank, Sun Life, Manulife and UBS. Aftermath of Heidi’s falsehood (2)
Upon a careful study of the case, vis-à-vis the evidence of the prosecution, it was an honest and sincere assessment that the plea bargaining agreement approved by Wendell Sulit was in the best interest of the State under the circumstances. Sulit was the dismissed prosecutor in the plunder trial on the plea bargaining deal with Armed Forces of the Philippines comptroller Gen. Carlos Garcia. The prosecution had no evidence to prove the material allegation in the information that the general had received kickbacks and commissions from suppliers and contractors of the AFP. Thus, faced with the prospect of accused Garcia being acquitted and walking free with his ill-gotten wealth, the prosecution was forced to take the best available alternative remedy of a plea bargain to save the government from the dismissal of the plunder case. The agreement would result in two criminal convictions — for bribery and violation of the Anti-Money Laundering Law. All existing and identified properties would be recovered and transferred to the government. This would work for the benefit of the government because about 85 percent to 90 percent of the properties under litigation for recovery were in the names of the other co-accused, the wife and children of Garcia over whom the Sandiganbayan had yet to acquire jurisdiction. It was a condition for the approval of the plea bargaining agreement that all identified properties must first be turned over and/or transferred to the Republic of the Philippines. Thus, there was a 100-percent assurance that the interest of the State would be protected. Sulit never gave any undue advantage to the accused Garcia nor was the agreement made for the convenience of Garcia. The truth of the matter was that all the publicity and media blitz was intended to hide the real story that former Ombudsman Marcelo had failed to conduct a good and complete investigation, had failed to gather the required evidence, and had filed a case merely based on personal belief, conclusions, and assumptions without any concrete evidence “to support the same during the trial of the case.” To reiterate, the recommendation of Sulit was still subject to the approval of then-Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez. However, notwithstanding the approval of former Ombudsman Gutierrez, the PBA was not yet self-executory as it was still subject to the approval of the Sandiganbayan. Thus, when the PBA was approved by the Sandiganbayan, was it legally proper and fair to impute liability to the persons who merely recommended an act that was approved by a competent court? Keen observers opined that the drama and antics of Heidi Mendoza influenced President Simeon Benigno Aquino III. Mendoza’s insinuation that Sulit gave undue advantage to Garcia and that the PBA was made for his convenience was a total falsehood. The truth was that all the publicity and media blitz starring the Crying Lady, Heidi Mendoza, were intended to hide the real story as stated earlier. The Court of Appeals turned down the findings of the Office of President Noynoy Aquino, that Sulit’s approval of the plea bargaining agreement with Garcia was unlawful. At the end of Noynoy’s term as president, the Court of Appeals ruled: “The fact that the deal was approved by the Sandiganbayan made it aboveboard and within the process mandated by law.” “The act of the Office of the President in determining the probative value of the evidence presented in the cases of plunder and money laundering in the administrative proceedings was not only misplaced and uncalled for but also constituted an encroachment on the judicial power. The authority rests solely upon the appropriate court — in the Sandiganbayan.” (To be continued) The post Aftermath of Heidi’s falsehood (2) appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Rule vs rule
It is probably neither a good nor bad thing to have the legislative proceedings of the Lower Chamber of Congress broadcast nationwide on a mainstream or social media platform. At least, it’s the most basic pretension of an institution toward transparency and, perhaps, accountability as well, although it can be entirely something else (i.e. a media blitz for the more dominant type or the glib politician). Mind you, there’s a viewing universe as much confused as those who debate whether or not an invited resource person can invoke the sub judice rule to not respond to questions raised by a joint committee, as in the case of a provincial governor of Northern Luzon. House members rightfully invoked their institutional rules on matters sub judice arguing, as they do, that it can proceed as long as it is in aid of legislation. Viewers may have learned by now how a typical congressional investigation proceeds and whether that kind of freewheeling discussion has resulted in a policy designed to curb corruption or streamline wicked practices. Quite glaringly, very little is reached in terms of tangible results or policy outcomes largely because the final verdict lies with the High Tribunal. Thus, there’s good ground for the ordinary man on the street to ask which must prevail, viz., the individual invoking his right to refuse to respond to queries in a congressional inquiry on account of the sub judice rule or a joint legislative committee professing that its own rules could set sub judice aside? It is not that the beleaguered governor wasn’t willing to cooperate, having been a member of the Lower Chamber himself for 20 years, but because it was well within his rights to do so. Again, because the proceedings are live-streamed and therefore found in the public domain, it is within justifiable bounds to have viewers react to the behavior of the provincial governor who was subjected to a “question and answer” ordeal, or the congressmen who looked tirelessly redundant, even patient, trying to extract all sorts of information they thought wise. Good thing that as a former colleague himself, the committee members did not have to threaten the provincial governor with “contempt.” In undiminished dignity, the joint committee allowed the position of the good governor to take its due course until his attendance was eventually dispensed with. Perhaps, the respectable mark of democracy at work is when, at times, Congress itself cannot win over a “clash of world views,” as in this case. There must be other ways it can ferret out the truth of whether the disbursement of funds to “bonded officers” by way of cash advances beyond their authorized ceiling could be the proper subject of a new public policy — in aid of legislation. The focal point of this discussion or lesson learned in this case is that there ought to be an ethical norm that would govern the behavior of every attendee in a congressional probe — be they resource persons or members of Congress themselves — in accordance with established parliamentary procedures, the most basic of which is for the chairman of the committee to first recognize who wishes to or whose turn it is to speak. At this time in its long history, Congress’ performance of its oversight function should already be “more organized, better formulated, skillfully integrated, respectably summarized” with the objective of the viewing audience becoming well-informed of the high points of a congressional inquiry. If possible, it should open a window of opportunity for anyone to join the national conversation based on what they saw, heard, and formed by way of judgment. In the end, the superior understanding of corruption in the bureaucracy at national or subnational levels should be framed within the grasp of every taxpayer in this country. They simply deserve to know the whole truth. The post Rule vs rule appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
