New slogan, same tack?
We remember distinctly how students of the seventies were made to sing to the strains of the then-required Bagong Pagsilang hymn, a paean to the newly established New Society of Ferdinand Marcos Sr., father of the incumbent. The march, incorrectly referred to by its chorus Bagong Lipunan (New Society), was commissioned during the presidency of the older Marcos for the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan, a movement introduced upon the declaration of martial law in 1972. Its lyrics were written by the legendary Levi Celerio and the music was composed by Felipe de Leon in 1973. “May bagong silang. May bago nang buhay. Bagong bansa, bagong galaw sa Bagong Lipunan!” The new generation may not have much recollection of the song other than the version of the present-day rock band Plethora, whose rendition was used as the campaign anthem by the son, Bongbong Marcos, during last year’s presidential campaign. It was also used by Marcos Jr. during the 78th Leyte Landing anniversary last October and his camp visit to the Eastern Mindanao Command in Davao City a week later. “Magbabago ang lahat, tungo sa pag-unlad. At ating itanghal: Bagong Lipunan!” The composer’s eldest son, Felipe, recounted that two days after the declaration of martial law, at around 2 a.m., two military trucks came to their house with an officer who asked for a “hymn and a march for the New Society,’’ as requested supposedly by then First Lady Imelda Marcos, to be delivered in a couple of days. “Ang gabi’y nagmaliw nang ganap. At lumipas na ang magdamag. Madaling araw ay nagdiriwang. May umagang namasdan.” The song was first released on radio and television during the early days of martial law as an anthem to trumpet Marcos Sr.’s vision of a new society for Filipinos. It also gave rise to the movement called Kilusang Bagong Lipunan, a political vehicle of the then administration. “Ngumiti na ang pag-asa, sa umagang anong ganda!” Depending on which side of the fence you were on those days, the present-day rendition of the march evokes memories that are either bad or good. Critics see it as nothing but propaganda that brings back chills to their spines, while others consider it a patriotic song that could help guide the country’s progress. That part of history came rushing back to us, particularly when the incumbent came up with his Bagong Pilipinas as the overarching theme of his administration’s brand of governance and leadership. Malacañang says this official branding, as contained in Memorandum Circular 24, calls for a deep and fundamental transformation in all sectors of society and government. The new logo was “produced internally” by the government’s lead communications arm without the use of public funds, according to the Presidential Communications Office. Take note, Bongbong’s new campaign slogan and logo came less than a week following Pagcor’s logo controversy. It’s common for presidential administrations to come up with government slogans, but not so common for them to launch them with a logo. There’s Rodrigo Duterte’s “Change is Coming,” Benigno Aquino III’s “Daang Matuwid,” and Joseph Estrada’s “Erap Para sa Mahirap,” to name a few. The PCO explained that the Bagong Pilipinas logo shows various stages of development in the Philippines’ journey toward the future. The three red stripes refer to the Philippines’ post-war agricultural and rural development, the post-colonial period, and the current metropolitan development. The blue stripes show a “progressive Philippines that leverages technological advancement in pursuing sustainable industrial development.” The rising sun signifies the dawn of a new Philippines, while the weave pattern illustrates the interconnectedness and unity of the Filipino people. “Overall, the Bagong Pilipinas logo embodies the Marcos administration’s vision for the country, emphasizing unity, involvement, and the bayanihan culture as the main fibers and components for its full realization,” the PCO said. We really don’t know if this new vision of the younger Marcos would translate into something similar to what his father started back then. Or would it eventually become a political vehicle just as his father’s was? At any rate, we just hope that the son would live up to the expectations of most Filipinos and that in the future, the memory of it won’t send chills down our spines. *** e-mail-mannyangeles27@gmail.com The post New slogan, same tack? appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Red fronts crushed by year’s end — BBM
Northern Samar, once a hotbed of the communist insurgency, will be declared insurgency-free by the end of 2023, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has boldly predicted. Thereafter, other rebel lairs throughout the country will be dismantled, he added. “I just received a briefing on the success rate of dismantling the fronts and that they are weakened. And I was also given a very encouraging deadline that we could say that we will have dismantled all of the CTG (communist terrorist group) fronts by the end of the year and that is the result of your good work,” the Chief Executive said. Marcos aired his optimism during a visit to Camp Sumoroy in Catarman, Northern Samar where he lauded the Army’s 803rd Infantry Brigade for their efforts in maintaining peace and order in the province, leading to “successful” counterinsurgency operations. “From the progress made in Northern Samar, we are looking forward to declaring the province clear of CTGs by the end of the year,” he said. Marcos said he could not wait to visit Northern Samar again to declare it insurgency-free. “I am very, very impatient already to come back here and to be with you when we declare your area of operation clear of any CTG formations, any CTG groups. And that will be a big, big blow to the enemy forces because they have always felt that Northern Samar is a place that they feel safe in,” he added. The 803rd IB has been instrumental in weakening the insurgents in the region, with the surrender of more than 6,200 of their sympathizers and personalities, and the dismantling of two guerrilla fronts in Northern Samar. Don’t let your guard down Despite the brigade’s accomplishments, Marcos reminded the soldiers to stay alert and observe vigilance over possible security threats. “You are still now in Northern Samar, on the front line. So, do not let your guard down. Continue to do what you have been doing because, as I said, it has been successful, it has been effective and we can see that from the weakening of the enemy forces,” he said. The President also urged the brigade to step up its counterinsurgency efforts and convince the rebels to return to the fold of the law. Marcos reassured rebels who wish to reintegrate into society they would have the government’s full support and assistance. “So, that is the plan. This is how we are going to move forward but this is all founded on, it is all based on the continuing good work that you put in every day,” he said. The President also urged the troops to continue their close coordination with the local communities to ensure the success of the government’s anti-insurgency campaign. “We have seen… the increase in the firearms that have been neutralized and also the personalities that have been neutralized. Let us continue that trend,” he said. He also renewed his vow to provide the troops with all the resources and training they need as part of the administration’s efforts to modernize the AFP. Late appointment
It’s already the first week of June and still Malacañang has not made any major announcements as to the Cabinet revamp that was mentioned early this year by no less than President Bongbong Marcos. The reckoning period should have been last May when the one-year appointment ban on those who had sought national elective posts lapsed. By now, the President should have a free hand to choose from among his many supporters who ran in the last elections but did not make it. As early as the fourth quarter of last year, there were already several names floated for this and that department, some of them controversial for belonging to the hated opposition collectively known as the Yellows. And, yes, there was a collective cringe that could be felt across the country when names such as Mar Roxas were bannered as soon-to-be appointed. Because while we would want to understand the mindset of PBBM as one going after true unity, the problem is that “unity” alone is not really an acceptable virtue for the majority of our people to embrace the yellow brand once more. No, Mr. President, we can’t accept it, so please perish the thought. Also, a word of advice. Before you even consider the Yellows, you may want to look first inside your own base camp and address the issues of your loyal lieutenants and supporters who are now being sidelined. I believe you will be facing bigger problems than the yellow backfire if people like Attys. Larry Gadon and Glenn Chong are not given responsibilities as members of your Cabinet. These are the leaders who really fought for you, tooth and nail, and they gave everything they had just for you. Also, they have solidly been there, even when you were still not looking that presidentiable, standing by you and your family all through the years that you suffered and were abandoned by many. Your leaders like Larry Gadon have gone through hell and high water defending you and ensuring that your voice and your narrative are not drowned out by the vitriol and venom being spewed against Marcos’ name. Staunch is an understatement in describing Atty. Gadon, who has staked his profession as a lawyer to hold the trenches. Now is the best time to recognize them with the Cabinet appointment they deserve, not really as a reward for their fealty, but because it will be in the best interest of your administration to have them as your official subalterns. They have proven their hard-core loyalty, and you know very well how deeply dedicated they will be to helping you attain your vision. They should be top of mind for you now, rather than that outrageous notion of allowing the Yellows to return to power under your helm. Appoint them now, Mr. President. Before all hell breaks loose. Mark my word. The post Late appointment appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
